real area of concern are our tall backs
Last week Keppler Bradley
This week Will Minson
who is next week? :banghead
Hardly households names who have killed us in consecutive weeks
-
Dude....
???
-
add Drew Petrie
-
Missing Kel Moore big time.
Gourdis was in the best today, maybe time to throw him in. He has the size and the speed just needs to learn.
Astbury seems to be struggling for confidence which is a shame.
-
Post would be ok option
-
Agree with Jack - we can't stop anyone tall - we're making some very ordinary footballers look quite good.
-
would give Post a go
-
The Richmond recovery has been led by astute selections and list management.

Agree. Good thread.
Its a big hole and we're all away of it. Grimes looks really good for future. Batchelor will be a gem. Deledio, Grigg, Newman, Houli with the run from half back is good.
Just need a monster defender to add to Grimes and hopefully tal good CHB defender Astbury.
Post could be that guy. Post, Astbury and Grimes has potential.
Rance has a long way to go, he may get there, I hope he can.
McGuane not a top 8 side player unfortunately.

Grimes seems to be so hell bent on spoiling that he has forgotten how to take an over head mark!
Rance, no good!
Gourdis may have been in Coburgs best, but to be a good club he needs to be in the best 4 weeks running to prove he has it! One weeks performance in the twos is not good enough!
Post? Well same as Goo but we may as well see what he has before we trade/ de- list him because he is headed that way!
Astbury is the only viable option at the moment!
-
just seen the Rance free against Minson. no good Rance, no where near tall enough
Minson kicks one goal every two games, :banghead :banghead 4 today
-
I agree Pope regarding Batch. Will be a gem.
He also has very solid footskills.
There was one instance today at the 15 min mark of the 1st term that looked really bad. I hope he learns from this moment. Im hoping it was a once off, and wont be the norm.
-
Watching replay again now, Rance's big problem he doesnt get off the ground to spoil :banghead
-
he remains very poor in the air lacks strength one on one and lacks judgement.
go look at his u18 yr he was always running lines and taking them on it was a strength and it remains his best assett to a degree. he slipped because of footskills and a query over his aerial work. in the past i have not been too concerned about these things with him i thouight they were areas he would improve but to me its bcoming more and more clear that these things have not improved and are not likely to.
luke mcguane remains a very ordinary footballer. why we kept him last yr is beyond me like thursfield i suppose we couldnt give him away.
our tall defensive stocks especially big strong kpds are very thin. yes we have numbers atm but assuming mcguane thursfield rance are short term and gourdis does not make it and that is well within the realms of possibility it does not leave much.
no1 priority has to be big bodied tall defenders ruckmen and the odd forward.
of the 16 talls on the list one could easily see 9 of them getting the stuff over the next 2 or 3 yrs. having to let go these players is what we should be planning for right now not after we have delisted them.it may mean at some stage we have 18 20 talls in our system for a few seasons but we need to turn over the talls.
-
pretty fair assessment the claw
any decent juniors coming through we might get our hands on?
-
In the name of getting games into the kids, we seemed to have stalled a bit.
Maybe they need to show more form in the magoos but we are still in experiment/rebuild so I reckon get Gourdis and Derrickx in the backline and see how they go for a couple of weeks.
Players do step up at the higher level, may aswell find out especially in the X stakes.
-
I think Dimma is going about it the right way. He is not throwing all the kids to the wolves all at once but rather given each an extended period of time to learn the craft and gain the confidence to find their way. He is keeping older, more experienced backman, down in defence to support this educational period and ensure they are not burdened with the most difficult opposition forward straight up.
McGuane is a necessary evil currently. He is our best tall defender at the moment and someone who has played on the better forwards for numerous year now. Players such as Grimes and even Rance will learn from him and learn how to play within a defenite defensive structure. Players such as Batchelor and Conca are not true defenders per say, but rather defensive forwards. Their role and responsibilities are completely different.
When their form warrants it, I would like to see Astbury and Post be given similar time frames in defence to gain experience in this type of role. Moore's return will strengthen up the defence in the short term (though he may never return this year) but we are pinning a great deal of hope on too few.
We do need to continue to develop our tall backs and hope that with experience and continued education they become a strong defensive unit. Until then though expect the points scored against us to continue to mount :'(
-
If I have said it once I will say it a million times, IMO we need to go after an established big backmen or 2 during the trade period. A couple of decent/good defenders that won't cost us much (no early picks) and that are still young.
Maybe Morton (Melbourne) is a player that Hardwick could turn around, he is out of sorts at Melbourne and out of contract at the end of the year. He is 21 years old too and could settle into part of our future backline.
-
If you've said it that many times WAT, care to name these established decent/good big defenders that wont cost us much, and are still young?

Cale Morton aint no tall backman - he's a mid fielder and bloody skinny one too ;D

Would not have a clue gg, thought you would look into that for us mate... :thumbsup
Morton from Melbourne is one, needs to bulk up a bit though.

I know he is skinny, but why is he described as a backman in an article I read this morning????
-
Possibly a rebounding back flanker at best. Normally plays midfield
He's not what we need.
has attitude problems like his bro.
-
Would not have a clue gg, thought you would look into that for us mate... :thumbsup
:lol yeah cheers mate
big bob carslile from port is out of contract but i reckon gws are all over him
-
Moore is a big loss for us. Agree we need to get a quality tall backman. I hope Astbury makes it. I don't believe it is right to play Rance on the tallest forward for the opposition Thursfield or for that fact Gourdis would have been better choices.
-
I know he is skinny, but why is he described as a backman in an article I read this morning????
AFL record pre-season player profiles and dream team stuff says he's a mid
Ht: 192 cm
Wt: 85kgs
-
the AFL prospectus that i bought in chinatown says he's a lazy squib utility
-
Gee the competition is really lacking in quality backman, gone are the days of, Woosha, McKenna, Doul, Silvagni, Aires, Jess....where are the big names like that.. :(

we dont need to chase after a mature defender. not if we accept we are still pretty early into rebuild.what we do need to do is get onto the list two or three big boned if you like, tall defenders. to go with grimes and astbury.
the thing is we dont have to pay a huge price to get a good kpd just look at where most of them are taken. few come from the first round and most of the better ones have come from the second and third rounds.
we only have a serious problem if we think we are a finals side then we will have to trade for all sorts of mature types.
i know this is a big knock but i still believe structurally we should have used pick 31 this yr on a tall defender and taken the risk batchelor would be there later. i say this even though i think we have picked a decent kid in batchelor. if not pick 31 they should have used pick 26 the adelaide pick we got for tambling and used it on one of darling, pat mccarthy who i thought was close to the best tall defender in the draft or scott lycett a very promising ruckman. we could have done something about a chronic list deficiency and taken batchelor at the same time.
i say all this from the perspective that
mcguane - delist/trade
thursfield - delist/trade
rance - likely delist/trade
gourdis - likely delist/trade
graham - delist/trade
browne - 50/50 at best to make it likely delist. development still
post - struggling will he make it. atm 50/50 at best. development still.
westhoff - a long shot project you hope he makes it but its more likely he wont. development still.
derickx - 23 24 yr old ruckman with good size should be pounding the door down. can he step up to the level. has a yr or two to adjust to the tempo.
miller - 27 28 yr old recruit who is no long term prospect whos career has in the main been ordinary.
astbury - shows promise but imo has done nothing to say hes a player. development stil.
griffiths - the next big thing according to some. based on what i ask. there is no guarantee. development still
-

sorry lost half of the post when i timed out will leave it as is as i think people will get the jist of what im saying.
16 talls people and theres only 6 i would say are DEFINATELY OR LIKELY long term keepers. the other ten the first 10 named you could see gone in no time at all.
we are in a bad way despite the numbers when it comes to talls.

Stanton is a gun. wore the tag of opposition sides for the past 3 years, ordinary start this year, but will bounce back
-
Stanton's the type of player I hope we target during trade week (got jeered by Essendon supporters when he was subbed off with an injury). For some reason, he has the reputation of being soft as butter. I saw him hesitate in 1 contest last game he played, but other than that he was as hard as anybody else on the team.
-
the Bombers used to use him as a run and carry player
This years he is playing a different role, dont know why
-
I wouldn't want to chase Stanton too hard, wouldn't mind him on the list but he'd cost too much to trade for him
Hasn't got much of a defensive side to him
-
Would rather Paddy than Stanton
-
id take hille over either of them

show me what afl list has 7 kpp age under 21 who are already stars?

Hille aside, I would more than happily take either one of their other two ruckmen in Bellchambers and Ryder....Hope the three of them don't stretch us too much come Saturday and we can run off them :-\

True about the age, but he is a much better footballer than either of them.
Not convinced about ryder, especially as he gets older and his leap diminishes.
Isnt one of the knocks on stanton his kicking?
What so sad about having his pictures all over my bedroom walls bents? In fact I idolize him so much I close my eyes and imagine my missus is him in those intimate moments.
:wallywink
-
Bellchambers was pick 8 in the 2008 pre-season draft
We took Gourdis at pick 1
Our last pick in the national draft that year was #51 Putt
Essendon's was #54 Hooker
There's the KPD and the Ruck that we are screaming out for that are in their best 22, taken with picks after ours, and we've got nothing to show for our "investments" :banghead

Add to that Pears at pick 23 in the 2007 draft
We traded away pick 19 for McMahon
We also took Hicks with pick 7 in the 2009 rookie draft
and left Luke Thompson for Adelaide with pick 17
Hmmm Pears, Bellchambers, Hooker, Thompson.
Still it's all hindsight, who could have guessed they'd come good.

can i put my hand up here pears and hooker were two i advocated we take. a down side was i really liked rance as well. the yr before i advocated we take eric mackenzie instead of edwards i still think mackenzie will turn out a decent player.

We're not about the now - if we win a few more games this year with an experienced ruck who retires in a couple of years time it still leaves us with nothing when our team starts to become 'of age'. Better to take the rodgering now if we can find a ruckmen who can develop into a competitive pair when the rest of the squad is developed. I hope Browne becomes of of these :pray

Rance is solid player.
Grimes has alot of promise. His hammy is a big blow.

match up this week will be of interest ::)
Gee i reckon they got it pretty right tonight.
Rance was fantastic, as was Grima and McGuane did pretty well also. :gotigers

He was stuffing good tonight. Could finish up being a reasonable 3rd tall

Rance was immense, credit where credit is due he was honestly sensational.

Agree Ramps.

Rance was better than good - he was excellent
Best game his played

So can he play or not Jack? Admit it, you were a massive wanker last week with all you wrote about Rance.
Some of our boys are young and learning, but if we think they are going to be superstars every week, we are just kiding ourselves. Maybe next time you'll just put it down as a bad game and not write the bloke off.
You seem like you have real passion Jack, but everytime we loose you jump on the first bloke that had a bad one!
Support all the boys Jack, they are all having a real crack and improving each week. :thumbsup

I was critical of him too earlier in the year. Doesn't mean I'd hold against him for the rest of his life, or hope he doesn't improve.
You just call it as you see it.
Last night he reminded me of Duncan Kellaway, brave as and rock solid
Good on him :thumbsup

So Rance moves to Bradley then we absolutely run away with the game. Well that's a stuffing eye opener. For some. ;D

yep thers a lot of writing off young players after one game but there is also a lot of proclaiming young players after one decent game.
on rance and its just my opinion in the main over the journey hes been very ordinary.
against essendon like all and sundry have said he had a very good game. does this mean all of a sudden his deficiencies have disappeared and hes become a good player.
credit to him he played a ripper but i for one wont be proclaiming him a player until he can CONSISTENTLY play to the standard.
god knows we have had a shedload of deficient players over the yrs play the odd blinder or even the odd decent season only to revert back to their level and go by the wayside.
personally i have no faith in rance making it and as such if in charge would be organising the list accordingly just in case.
the upside is hes still only 21 only played 30 odd games. hes in yr 4 and by now you do want to see good signs. perhaps the essendon game is the beginning of better things to come. being a fourth yr player though does mean he should be open to some criticism.
personally atm if i had to choose between hooker and rance id take hooker in a heart beat thats not to say over time it may change. hookers 2011 season to date has been pretty good apart from the very quite one against us and one earlier n the season. this on top of a decent 2010 and 09.
hooker actually gets just as much ball as rance and yep makes his fair share of mistakes with it in hand. but in the main he has made solid decisions and uses it okay.. in the air imo is where hooker has it over rance he takes a decent grab is good one on one in the main and is reliable. rance is 21 and played 30 odd games and hooker is 22 and played 40 odd games. i reckon hooker has been reasonable for the last 3 seasons.i think hooker a nice mix of attack and most importantly defend. hes a great size and more than capable of playing on your browns clokes dawes etc. ican say i think hooker will be a decent mid to long term afl player i dont know if one can categorically say that about alex yet.
anyway just my perspective. im hoping like hell rance becomes a very good big bodied rebounding kpp for us i was all over him as a junior but its as a senior i have concerns.

Why don't you compare Hooker's 2010 to Rance's 2011 or we should wait until next year and then compare Rance's 2012 to Hooker's 2011
Personally I'd take Rance, Hooker is slow

and BTW against Freo - he was only on Bradley from half way through the 3rd qtr, was on McPhee before that and beat him (watched that game again yesterday b4 I went to the 'G)
How can this be true? Jackstar goes to the game and watches the replay twice. lmfao
So Rance moves to Bradley then we absolutely run away with the game. Well that's a effing eye opener. For some. ;D
I'm happy to not have bellchambers and hooker at punt road.
writing off young players after a bad game are we mate? ;)

Wouldn't rather hooker over any of rance. Grimes. Astbury, myself.
