ESSENDON assistant coach Dean Wallis is the subject of an AFL investigation into alleged betting on a match involving his club last weekend.
The AFL launched the investigation yesterday into a football official's alleged three-figure bet on the Bombers' match against Port Adelaide.

A scandal at Essendon hey?
:lol
-
Looks like Hird and Bomber have syphoned all the money out of the footy department and the rest have resorted to laying some side bets to make their personal ends meet.

mmmmmmm
this could blow up.
Another club could have issues as well ;) :shh

Wallis has been suspended by the AFL from coaching AFL, VFL and development roles for 14 weeks. He also copped a $7000 fine.

Got off lightly IMHO - seriously his actions are too stupid for words
And BTW how do you enforce the suspension of a coach?
$7k fine I am sure Jimmy or Bomber thompson can spot him a few bucks if he's short
-
He gets the full 14 weeks
Heath Shaw gets 8 and 6 suspended so he can come back for finals.
Penalty is laughable and reeks with inconsistency.
I know one is a coach and one is a player but if both blokes only exist with one chromosome ....... :help
-
He had 3 quaddies worth a total $400. Lost on all them including one betting on Essendon to win :lol.
Anderson said the suspension is equivalent to that for a player so it's for 14 matches. Essendon will supposedly name a new non-coaching role for Wallis this afternoon at their press conference.

Anderson's excuse was that Shaw didn't put the bets on himself whereas Wallis was spotted at a TAB.

From the Age webiste:
"Anderson said that the case was dealt with more severely than the Shaw case as the bets were placed by Wallis himself, and were more substantial.
However, his case involved no use of inside information for personal gain, which was taken into account when the penalty was determined.
The three bets, placed in June, July and August were footyquads, the second involving an Essendon leg.
Anderson said the league had taken into account that Wallis had eventually pled guilty to the offence; that there had been no evidence of corrupt activity; and there was no misuse of inside information.
However, the penalty, which precludes Wallis was any work with Essendon players, including during the 2012 NAB Cup, was sever for the following reasons: He was initially untruthful about the bets; he bet on his own club; the size of the bets was ‘not unsubstantial’; there was no excuse for making bets after the example set by the sanctions on Shaw and Maxwell.

Cleaning the players gear, although he would struggle with that role.
