Title: Ross Smith - new assistant coach [officially confirmed]
Post by: Penelope on September 27, 2011, 08:41:02 PM
Dont think this deserves a thread of its own at this stage, but a poster on BF is claiming we have signed Ross Smith as an assistant coach on a three year contract.

Edit: Now confirmed and officially announced:

From Numpty Tiger on BF:

"Source is Hawthorn-linked. Separate source suggests this is true as he has made it clear for past 12 months that he was good to move if the price was right."

Assistant Coach: Ross Smith

Coaching career:
In his seventh season at the Club Smith will again manage the defense.

Has held a host of coaching roles in the AFL, VFL and TAC Cup and led ACT team Ainslie to a premiership in 1997 as captain-coach.

Played 224 games for North Melbourne from 1984-96, represented Victoria three times and toured Ireland with the Australian team in 1990.

Like the sound of this. Hawthorn arent what you would call blessed with individual talent down back, but they have been a very solid unit down back for years now.

It's true!

The mod approved Hawthorn club source just confirmed it.

i've always seen leppa as more a one-on-one development coach than a tactical line coach

dont think he'll be getting the stuff when we are trying to bolster the coaching dept.

smith would be a good addition

Hardwick really seems to be pushing the club to keep improving - as noted from his speech at the B&F. Thats a very good sign IMHO.

i think and i may be wrong, just get the feeling Dimma and the RFC have said enough is enough we are better than any team from 5-18 so we need to make finals in 2012.

Rebuild is over. Bottoming out is over. Even with the spuds we have i still think we should be aiming for the 8.

I like this addition alot.

We will see finals in 2012 and beyond, we will see that based purely on natural development of our list.

With all the added (potential) off field signings, we are making it certain. I am with you on this one daniel.

Title: Tigers snare Ross Smith (RFC)
Post by: one-eyed on September 28, 2011, 02:27:44 PM
Confirmed on RFC website: Tigers snare Ross Smith

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/6301/newsid/124304/default.aspx

Smith has joined Richmond on a three-year deal and will be in charge of the Tigers’ defensive structures and strategies.

“Ross is an excellent communicator, a great teacher and he’s been involved in footy a hell of a long time.  Importantly, he knows about the system that we’re trying to implement,” Hardwick said.

“He’s had the experience, similar to me, of how to build up a side and get them to where we need to go.

"The fact he’s experienced in that area, is going to be really valuable for us.”

...good addition - was hard at it as a player & the roos loved his leadership...good reports out of hawthorn as well & can only help having people involved who have a) won flags & b) been involved int he rebuild/development of a young side...another couple of appointments like this (craig, knighta back in development role etc) and I think we are assembling a good nucleus off field...now if only we can delist/trade out a few duds & get a good nucleus ON it...hmmmmm

I can't believe people think Hardwick will be in trouble if we don't make finals! The man is a bloody coach not a miracle worker and considering what shape the list was in when he took over it would be totally unfair to give him the arse considering how much dead wood he has cut from it and how much still needs pruning. He has basically had nothing to work with and I think he has done a great job just to get us to where we are so quickly. Hardwick should be offered a 2 year extension out of good faith for what we set him up with in the beginning!

And as for Malthouse I hope he stays the eff away! The last thing we need is that prick sniffing around in the middle of next season de stabilizing the club all because he thinks he has unfinished business.....Lets not forget he has been given the arse from the AFL's most successful club of the era both on and off field......Maybe there is something in that for all of us ;) ;)

People have that view because history shows our club doesnt have long term timelines when it comes to coaches. Personally I think its grossly unfair if he doesnt continue because the first 2 years of his contract have been sacrificed for development... but we are Richmond and at Richmond coaches who dont make finals usually dont stay long. IMHO we should miss the finals again next year and go full bore on the draft then put the line in the sand in terms of winning for the following seasons.

Agree :cheers :cheers Next year will be more make or break for our list management IMO, we need to get at least 3 picks right this season then go all out next year. It will be interesting to see if we play it safe or take a risk or two in this years draft? either way it need's to work out for our recruiters or heads will have to roll in that department :whistle :whistle

As Dimma said Smith would already know Hardwick's thoughts on footy and be familiar with most of the gameplan. So Smith will be able to get cracking with improving the defensive side of the group from day one of preseason rather a novice assistant who would need to learn as he goes. Good to see it's an additional appointment to our existing coaching staff.
