Richmond to grab former Collingwood midfielder John McCarthy
by: Michael Warner
From: Herald Sun

AXED Collingwood midfielder John McCarthy will become a Tiger today, barring a last-minute change of tack by Port Adelaide.
McCarthy, 22, will account for one of just 11 selections in the AFL pre-season draft.
But GWS could shorten the draft even further by passing on as many as four of its first six selections.
Richmond has committed to taking McCarthy and does not expect the Giants or Suns to swoop and hopes the Power will overlook him as well, with delisted North Melbourne player Gavin Urquhart its likely choice.
Gold Coast is keen on talented Hobart utility Aaron Hall, who has been training with the club.
Former Saint Zac Dawson appears certain to reunite with coach Ross Lyon at Fremantle with pick 10.
The Bulldogs will complete the draft by selecting a TAC Cup player overlooked in last month's national draft.
Clubs will then cast the talent net wide with as many as 80 rookie draft picks.
Former St Kilda forward Andrew McQualter will be rookie-listed by Gold Coast to fill a leadership role in the club's reserves team in the AFL's Northern League.
Today's drafts loom as the final chance for Brendan Fevola and Andrew Lovett to resurrect their AFL careers but neither is expected to find a home.
The AFL career of All-Australian Leon Davis, 30, also appears over. But former Hawk Travis Tuck, the game's first player to be outed for three illicit drug strikes, has been linked to a rookie spot at Melbourne.

Port picked him up. It was always a possibility of happening. We move on.
-
Is Brett O'Hanlon any good? What do people know about him?
-
The Richmond bigfooty phantom drafters were pretty keen on him, so I'd say he's alright.
-
Port think they pulled a big coup now lol Duds
-
Congratulations to Port for drafting a bloke who didn't want to even move to their state.
Focus-less club.
-
Didn't overly rate McCarthy so I'm actually wrapped with the result going for kids, would have been interesting if we woud have drafted Marric aswell as McCarthy.
Port are a joke. Would hate to be a professional club that forces players to play there. Don't forget your boxing gloves John.
-
Dirty low life port bastards, doing that in this day and age is poo, just poo. Dont care how people rate this bloke but Port knew he wanted the Tigers......bunch of pricks, well now we owe them...

We heard a whisper a few days ago that John McCarthy would be taken by Port Adelaide, so we did believe that would be the case." Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson.

McCarthy said on SEN he didn't care where he ended up (Port or Richmond) as he didn't know where he would end up and is just happy to continue his career (he couldn't say anything else really anyway even if he wasn't happy). I think he said Port told him Tuesday night they were going to pick him up which fits in with what Francis says.

He still said in article that he wanted to stay in Melbourne and so did his girlfriend, this is players get that go home factor, dont tell me his heart will be in Adelaide...
I honestly think the AFL need to look at this, clubs where recycled players are given permission to train at that club should be given first preference to select them, regardless of the pecking order. I mean we have just put him through part of a pre-season at our cost only to join another club.....
Don't agree with it and shame on you Port, we will get you back.....
-
Does seem a bit odd to take someone who publically didn't want you, I assume McCarthy said differently to their faces.
Not too concerned by the loss.
-
:rollin :lol :huh
-
I hope Port rot in Hell for this...oh wait....they are already there. ;D

Haha enjoyed this

This raised my eyebrows... usually for players of this calibre, clubs dont tend to stand in the way of their wishes. No biggie as I dont know enough about him, and like the way we've gone in todays drafts but poor form on Ports behalf.
-
Who gives an effin crap. Bloke was a filthy skunk.
-
Dont care either way for Mccartney i just would've rather he than Maric.
I just long for the day that we smash these bankrupt fools in a prelim only to then make the granny and smash those sissy neighbours of theirs in Adelaide for dobbing.
What a complete bunch of losers they are over in Adelaide. One dobs and the other is doing an Uncle leo and just hanging onto grim death
-
Would rather a delisted player on our rooke list anyway.
And take next best young kid. Ie. Grimes.
-
was a stupid choice to allow him to train with us.
Port were always going to swoop and at our expense.
Having said that,he's not good enough and we have enough of those in out midfield.
Be like adding another Browne to the ruck stocks
-
Yeah I am not fussed if we got him or not, it's the process that annoys the crap out of me.
-
it must be a big of a cluster for JMc given that in 12 months time Free Agency would have got him to his club of choice.
No wonder the AFLPA has grievances with the system if a guy is unable to play for the club of his choice and that particular club has committed to contract him.
Not a good system at all ..... clear restriction of choice & trade
-
All the articles are Public Relations bunk.
McCarthy wanted to go, he was not going to be in Richmond's best 22 he was going to have to work for it. Port on the other hand, he is going to walk straight into their starting 22. Its a PR world boys and girls.
-
Slagging of Port a bit here boys - Remember what happened in Darwin.

:thumbsup
And lol @ people saying he wouldn't have been in the 22. The club obviously wanted the bloke and I reckon they thought he'd be playing seniors. Why would we bother with him if they thought he'd be a fringe player? A lot of people seemed keen on this guy but now we don't have him it's a case of "oh well, wouldn't have done much anyway". ;D
We got the prodigy anyway, so all is well at Tigerland.
-
Wow couldnt get on the forum for the last day or so......bloody mouse in the wheel died.... ;D
Dont kid yourselves, we wanted him, no doubt about it, would of picked him up had Port not swooped.
But its over, they have him and thats that....
But we owe them...
-
Have not seen him play for Port but wanted to know if anyones seen him play and what they think?
Pity given our current situation could easily replace jackson or edwards- maybe both :lol
his stats dont indicate he's setting the world on fire but seems a handy pickup
his stats from the first two games:
Player Name K H D M HO T FF FA G B DT
John McCarthy 15 8 23 6 1 4 0 2 1 0 96 vs St Kilda
John McCarthy 10 10 20 3 0 3 0 1 1 1 75 vs Essendon
-
he's okay
-
he's okay
sums it up
-
Is better than Jackson
-
Is better than Jackson
Wouldn't take much.
-
Is better than Jackson
I would prefer Grenville Dietrich to come out of retirement we can stick him at Full Forward, Riewoldt can go to Coburg for 3 weeks and Jackson can find a new job altogether ;D
-
I wonder wht a trade for a draft selection wasnt orchestrated for this fella...if we had anything to do with him going into PSD it was a poor move and being a little too cute ::)
-
It's done guys, we torture ourselves enough about rambling, buddy et al. Good news is this year is a bumper draft, best ever, can load up on midfielders and get rid of the deadwood
-
Any monster KPP backmen up on free agency?
