No point playing their reserves and winning by 20 points.  May as well get an indication of where we are at early on.

Didn't we thrash Geelong in the pre season two years ago ? The same year we went 0-9.

Yeah but gee, we had our best in and their players consisted of the lady that runs the pie stand, the boot studder and Mr Burns from the Simpsons.....not much to go on back then.

This time around they are playing full strength or there abouts.

Geelong are still alive in the NAB Cup and will want to win well as well as hoping one or more of West Coast, Adelaide or Hawthorn slip up.
They have been a real bogey team in the last 25 years and seem to have their way against us.
What we need is to play a side where we can give our A graders a run for a half against a side who are the reigning premiers and whose make up of young players will start filling the breaches left behind from the retiring premiership stars.
I would like to see a few things
a) Match time to our guns
b) Under the circumstances that may prevail in the second half with stars being possibly rested: a competitive and excellent first half result.
c) No injuries.

I believe scarlett, podsiadly and johnson are returning..
I'm guessing they want to use us as an example  ::)

I say we use it to see how we hold up against this side. At least for the first half, we don't wanna give away too much.
I know Carlton keep saying they are focusing on rd 1, and unless we are ready I think we will get trounced.

Mentally, this side has the wood on us, regardless of their ladder position.
Playing well at skilled will mean a lot to the confidence of the players and will make the first timers more familiar with the ground come rd 4 should they play.

Maybe jacko can have a brainfade and wipe out their leadership group

The Tigers' midfield will get a significant boost by the inclusions this week of Trent Cochin, Daniel Jackson, Nathan Foley and Shaun Grigg, who were all rested in their 38-point loss to Fremantle in Perth on Sunday.

Ty Vickery has been cleared of any major damage after he corked a thigh against the Dockers.

Richmond could be the first rival club to experience the windy conditions likely at Geelong this season due to the demolition of the Doug Wade Stand behind the goals at the southern end.

With seven home matches this season at Simonds Stadium, and given the strong winds that can prevail in Geelong, the Cats have been practising how best to play the expected difficult conditions until the ground redevelopment in completed.

No Deledio....

RICHMOND has denied Brett Deledio has a serious injury after ruling him out of Saturday's NAB Cup clash against Geelong at Simonds Stadium.
Deledio strained his hamstring in an intra-club practice match at Whitten Oval early last month, but he had hoped to play his first competitive game this weekend to gain touch before the start of the premiership.

Tigers football manager Craig Cameron, said his club was taking a conservative approach with Deledio, particularly as it was the first time he has had a muscle strain.

"He 's fine. There are no dramas and he should be right to play the following week," Cameron said.

Why not play a quarter or a half? This will be the 4th week, that's more than enough time for a minor hammy strain. He'll be lacking touch come rnd 1

Just a quick note.  For the rugby (Feb 6), the pre-purchased ticket guys had to queue with the walk up starts.  the ticket handling in Geelong was a total and utter schemozzle.  10 people in the ticket office, 4 people serving and probably one brain cell shared between them.  If you're going I suggest that you get there early.  I queued 30 minutes for a ticket with a 5000 crowd.

The car parking was just as bad.

Must say the whole set up at Simmonds Stadium Geelong is a schemozzle all the time

Dreading our clash down there in April (round 4) and BTW tickets for that one go on sale a fortnight before the game

I've posted this in the Coburg thread as well.

Coburg's practice match this weekend will be the curtainraiser to the Richmond vs Geelong game at Kardinia Park.

Coburg vs Geelong
Kicks off at 11.30am.

So if you get down there early you'll probably see a few of our cubs running around for Coburg.

I think the answer would be a NOPE because he is allowed to serve his suspension in the pre-season.

The King scenario was different in that he couldn't serve his suspension in the pre-season

Sportal is tipping us to lose this weekend by 44 pts  :P

WE THINK: Geelong can still make their first NAB Cup Grand Final in three years if they account for Richmond on Saturday and they are done favours by St Kilda, Melbourne and Port Adelaide. And given the fact they have beaten Richmond by an average of 73 points in each of their last seven home-and-away matches, they wouldn't exactly be fearing the prospect of the Tigers at Simonds Stadium. But it still remains to be seen how much of a priority making the pre-season decider is for the Cats. Despite their significant absences, Geelong do welcome back Steve Johnson, Joel Corey, Corey Enright, Paul Chapman, James Podsiadly and Matthew Scarlett. Richmond, who can't make the NAB Cup Grand Final, also take a strong squad into the game but they'll still be no match for the Cats.
Geelong by 44 points.

Only 6 goals in the VFL curtainraiser were kicked to the open demolished end of Kardinia Park I believe. None by Coburg in two quarters. The side who can kick a couple of goals at that end will go along way to winning. Definitely an advantage to Geelong who train there all the time.

When our pressure was up near maximum the Cats just couldn't get through our zone/press. You just couldn't fault us. It dropped away in the last 10 mins though as we tired which allowed the Cats 3 goals. The test for us in the real stuff is maintaining this level of elite pressure for 4 quarters. We are still a young developing side so it still may take a year or two for the young bodies to fully mature to produce elite endurance and intensity for 4 quarters. The positive is the class of our younger players is showing through and it looks like we can produce this elite pressure and intensity for longer periods this year (1.5 qtrs non-stop) as opposed to say 15 mins last year.

Great to finally have a ruckman who can dominate hitouts and play around the ground. Dusty, Cotch and Axel must be thanking their prayers.

Tucky pinged for illegal disposal (harsh). Hawkins can't make the distance into the breeze and goes wide out of bounds for a throw-in. We clear.

Vickery - back into the corridor but misses Jack - turnover. Throw-in in geelong for-pocket. Now a ball-up 60m out for Geelong and the Cats set up a shot for Johnson. Point.

Just have to play 1 more decent quarter and we'll be alright.  :thumbsup

Oh ok is there only three qtrs??

When your at half time and your up by that much if you can play 1 more decent quarter then 90% of the time you aint gonna lose the game.

Hawks would of thought that many years ago when we were 50 odd points down against them....we won...
Ramps did say 90% of the time, not 100%.

Yeah well in the past 90% of the time we have been the other 10%..

We had the stronger side on paper and showed it on the scoreboard over all 4 quarters. We didn't do a freo and struggle for 3.5 qtrs against our 2nd string side last week. Well done Tiges. A very professional win across the park. Dimma and the coaching staff will be very happy with how the preseason is progressing so far towards round 1.

Wow thats pretty impressive, now please tell me no injuries or reports?????
None that I know of WAT. Hopefully we got through unscathed which is the main thing this time of the year.

Very good thanks MT, now what about King, how much are we going to miss round one???

Great games by Post, Grimes and Rance! All seemed to gel together today and feed off each other.
Also How good is it to finally have a ruck man with a brain :gotigers

There's probably only two spots for A.Maric, Kingy and Nahas and A.Maric has been the best of those three this preseason. Conca will be back for round 1 so we should cover for Kingy fairly easily IMO.

That is really good neews about our backline, in particular Post and Rance having good games...

Lids and Conca to come back into the side, makes for a very good looking midfield.

One word, "whoa" ..Not totally unexpected i must say...the cats had a number of senior players coming into the side for their first hitout however we were relentless. Big Ivan controlling the middle and our midfield pack was simply unstoppable...Martin, grigger, foley, edwards, Cotch in and out. lil maric should have slotted 3 , his radar was out..set up at least 2 though. JR8 is in great touch right now...whoa, Id hate to be lining up on him r 1 . grimesy, what did I say about this kids hands like a stell trap...was unstoppable at CHB and just quietly keep an eye on Posty he has improved like the blazes. word is the development cvoaches have put a power of work into him :shh

anyhow, im not getting too carried away, result didnt surprise me and rounds off our prep beautifully as we can now cotton wool our thoroughbreds and send an U23 squad to ACT :gotigers

I would be sending the Coburg side to the ACT, at least all the Rookies, forget Martin, Cothchin, Foley, Maric x 2 (even though one is a rookie), Grimes, Rance, Jack, Tuck.

Just play a very ordinary side against GWS...

^ spot on good sir...backmen all looked really good together - add Newy's & Houli's run and carry and there was a bit to like (all be it against an undermanned side - though the forward line did have Pods and THawk)...

couldn't agree more re Anna Ivan-avic either - not only has some ruck smarts but good around ground and loves a contest...seeing him tackle and sheppard was just as pleasing...

Next week's matches still count towards the NAB Cup ladder.  If we get a big win against GWS, we could be top 4.  I think the $$ we get for top 4 is double what we get for top 8.  Go tiges!

Have they even managed to play their full squad yet??

I know I am supposed to be "quasi" banned

But in answer to your question the answer is NO

But Gibbs was on Ch7 news this evening and said they would playing their strongest possible team this week minus Jamieson who's still injured
