Title: Richmond V Port rnd 6
Post by: Penelope on April 30, 2012, 05:00:16 PM
Looks like port will be missing the big sarge next week
Quote
JAY Schulz is likely to miss one to two weeks with an eye injury sustained during Balfours Showdown XXXII.

"He'll see a specialist tomorrow but it's likely he'll miss a week or two."

Poor bloke got poked in the eye and the Crows bood him out of the building.Wankers. Handy out for us as that means Rance can give Westhoff a hiding. Chuck Grimsey the weirdo on Butcher and we'll need another tall to go with Daniel Stewart (he will come in for Sarge). Posty? :outtahere

Not sure we should turn up this week. No Jacko no Richmond. Who is going to do a job on a Port defender that is an average at best player? Who comes in to do this very important job? No one. No Jacko no Richmond.

We forfeit.

The AFL site is predicting Port to win by about 3 goals...

Preview: Port Adelaide v Richmond
By Harry Thring and Paul Daffey
Tue 01 May, 2012

WHERE AND WHEN: AAMI Stadium, Sunday May 6, 2.45pm
LAST TIME: Richmond 10.14 (74) defeated by Port Adelaide 13.11 (89), round 10, 2011 at TIO Stadium

Both sides have struggled to close out games over the last few weeks, losing by narrow margins despite being right in the game at important stages. The Power have endured a frustrating start to 2012, with an inspiring win over the Saints in round one being followed by four consecutive honourable losses. With both sides desperate to break through for a win, expect a fiery clash.

THE FOUR POINTS
PORT ADELAIDE

1. Jay Schulz's scratch to the eye is another massive blow to the Power's forward line after the loss of Robbie Gray for the season. Schulz is a genuine target and a deadly shot for goal, so his presence will be missed immensely. This may mean the pressure falls on Daniel Stewart who only just missed out on selection for last Sunday's Showdown.

2. Matthew Primus wasn't happy with his midfield after last weekend's loss and Travis Boak said the group accepted responsibility for it. With players in the class of Boak, Hamish Hartlett, Dom Cassisi, Kane Cornes and Brad Ebert running around, the Power have the quality in the middle of the ground to trouble most teams.

3. Port Adelaide's ruck stocks are looking pretty thin at this stage of the season. Brent Renouf has struggled in his two games for the year and Jarrad Redden - who impressed early - is likely to be brought into the side. The Power have claimed all season that they don't need to win the ruck to win the ball out of the centre, but they were proved wrong on the weekend against the Crows.

4. Justin Westhoff said during the week if the Power could manage to find one breakout win then the narrow losses they've suffered so far this season could be turned into wins. Primus said that the side's belief dropped a little bit with each loss from a winnable position, so the importance of this encounter can't be stressed enough.

RICHMOND
1. Damien Hardwick's Richmond coaching tenure was difficult at the start, with the Tigers losing the opening nine games in 2010. But the breakthrough came in round 10 when they defeated Port Adelaide by 47 points, 10.17 (77) to 3.12 (30) in slushy conditions at AAMI Stadium. The Tigers had a record 142 tackles. They're likely to be just as fanatical this weekend.

2. Richmond's key forwards showed glimpses of a return to form during the Tigers' 10-point loss to West Coast last weekend. Jack Riewoldt had 15 disposals and took five marks while Tyrone Vickery had 12 disposals and took six marks. Both players kicked two goals. Riewoldt was disappointed after his failure to kick a third goal with a shot from a tight angle when the game was in the balance in the dying minutes. He'd be eager to atone.

3. A pleasing factor of recent weeks has been the development of Jake Batchelor as the third tall defender. Despite being only 188cm, the height of many midfielders, Batchelor plays tall. He took eight marks against West Coast, including several intercept marks that highlighted his ability to read the play.

4. Richmond simply must win this match or it faces a long season; if it loses, its tough draw means that it might even get through to Greater Western Sydney in round 12 before it wins its second match. The Tigers have gone close against some highly rated teams, losing to Carlton and Collingwood because of short lapses and then falling short by 10 points against both Geelong and West Coast. The Tigers just need to gain composure quickly.

AFL.com.au prediction: Port Adelaide by 17 points

Bookies expect a Richmond win
Paul Gough, Betting Editor
Sportal
1/5/2012 6:24 PM

The bookies believe this will finally be the week when Richmond gets reward for effort, installing the Tigers as favourites to beat Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in what is set to be the tightest betting game of Round 6.

... despite the fact the game is being played in Adelaide, TAB Sportsbet has opened the Tigers at $1.75 favourites, with Port at $2.05.

"Richmond have earned high praise for brave defeats against Geelong and West Coast over the past two weeks and will find Port Adelaide a much easier task despite having to travel to Adelaide," TAB Sportsbet's Matt Jenkins said.

And while the Tigers did not win a game in Adelaide between 2000-2005, their recent record at AAMI Stadium has been much better, with four wins from their last nine visits - including their past two.

The Tigers have also been installed as favourites at online bookmakers sportsbet.com.au at $1.75, with the Power at $2.08.

Centrebet favour Richmond at $1.75, with Port $2.05.

Sportal is tipping the Tiges  :thumbsup

WE THINK:
Sunday's clash sees a square-off between two outfits with their seasons on the line, undoubtedly travelling far better than their identical 1-4 records would suggest. Aside from actually winning, Richmond couldn’t have been more impressive in successive defeats across the past fortnight against reigning premier Geelong and the undefeated Eagles. Port's competitiveness has been vastly improved this season, even if their win-loss ratio hasn't been. Jack Riewoldt and Tyrone Vickery finally showed overdue signs of improvement against the Eagles, while at the other end Port's forward stocks have been diminished with Schulz's injury, on top of losing Gray for the season. But it was the Power's midfield which really wilted late and cost them victory against Adelaide last weekend. Port's on-ball brigade can't afford another fade-out against the likes of Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Dustin Martin and Nathan Foley. A superior engine room and a slight edge in consistency and composure will give the Tigers the advantage in a close one. Richmond by 12 points.

Tigers clash not do or die: Port coach
The Age
May 4, 2012 - 1:51PM[/i]

Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus has rubbished Richmond's suggestions that Sunday's clash is do or die for both AFL clubs.

The loser slips to a precarious 1-5 win-loss record but Primus says the AAMI Stadium encounter isn't season defining.

"It's important," Primus told reporters on Friday.

"But round five, round six, isn't do or die for your whole year."

Primus said his players needed reward for their efforts which, like Richmond, have fallen short in a demanding opening schedule.

But he was bemused at his Richmond counterpart Damien Hardwick's belief that Richmond's season starts now.

"Our season started round one," Primus said.

"We definitely haven't taken Richmond's point of view of the first five weeks, wipe it out and scratch it.

"We're disappointed because we thought we had the chance to win all of those games.

"Richmond have been in a rebuilding process for three years now so Damien is obviously feeling they need to get a win - we're certainly adamant we need to.

"But our season isn't starting now."

Primus also took exception to his key defender Troy Chaplin's comments that Port lacked "ticker" in last week's loss to Adelaide.

"Our ticker is no worries at all," Primus said.

"Our effort when a team stepped it up a notch wasn't good last weekend.

"But I have got no concerns at all with the ticker or the heart or the ability to keep working hard - I haven't got a question mark on it at all with this group."

Port opened their season with a win but have lost four in a row, yet Primus said his players remained upbeat.

"They're confident in their ability to keep fighting it out," he said.

"A win would be great for everybody involved in the club ... if we can stick at it longer, we'll get the result we're after.

"... Their competitiveness has certainly risen more than last year but they need to get some reward for that.

"Richmond are in exactly the same boat - they're more experienced than us, and have got some players in some pretty good form.

"But we're really keen for the battle against them, they need a win as much as we do."

Butcher has a massive height advantage over Batch.

I reckon he has a pretty good contested grab too. Batch took some marks in the backline last week, but I agree that it would be a massive stretch for him to clunk them from Butcher.

I'm a bit nervous about this game. Hopefully we play with the same intensity of last week and get a good start so we aren't playing catch up footy again by half-time.

We need to start getting a quick kick out of the centre rather than overhandballing going backwards.

Dusty from 70m for a point. Bugger!

1/4 time

Goals: Riewoldt, King, Miller

We're in front thanks to our defending but we've got too many out playing dumb footy.

Newy limping. Hopefully his foot is only a bit sore from being trodden on when he took that courageous mark before.

1/2 time

Richmond   3.2    8.7-55
Port           1.2    2.2-14

Goals:  Kingy 2, Nahas 2, Riewoldt, Miller, Deledio, Newman

Our midfield and defensive pressure and structures has suffocated and killed Port. Hard to find a poor Tiger other than Jack's body language. Dimma should go to Jack and point to the scoreboard and the six goalkickers say that's why your playing the role I'm wanting you to play.

They replayed the collision. Definitely the knee or high up on the shin. Watson said if you're unlucky you can get a small break from those types of collisions to the side of the lower knee. Hopefully it's just a heavy knock and bruise.

We're 39 points up at half-time and kicked 6 goas to 1 against the breeze. It's nigh on impossible kicking goals out there even with the breeze from the pockets. All up repeat the 1st half and we win by 80 points which is a smashing in any language.

3/4 time

Richmond   3.2    8.7    9.10-64
Port           1.2    2.2    6.4-40

Goals:  Nahas 2, King 2, Riewoldt 2, Miller, Deledio, Newman

That was back to the bad old days that quarter. Inept and lazy!

Edwards on; Vickery subbed off.

We need lots more run.  Our defenders don't have enough targets this quarter.  Grigg, Kingy, Conca and Titch need to provide some targets.  That nude nut umpire is doing his best to even up the game.

Reckon Dimma would be having a few things to say to a few lazy players after that quarter.

Good to get that one away, in the past we have dropped this type of game. Newy and Kingy seemed to be rested quite a bit in the second half too so that made the win a little more meritorious.

I don't think that at all. Al though I am happy we won by 6 golas our let down in the third quarter cost us a 10 goal win and again it these lapses that the better sides like Geelong and West Coast have punished severely in the last two weeks. A win is a win but a 4 quarter effort in games like this is important especially kicking with the wind and kicking the first goal in the third quarter.

Although the flags told us something different, the scoring end was the end port chose to kick to in the first quarter. Therefore our first quarter could be considered a decent quarter also!

Cometti is a flog, and suggested we should drop to the bottom and pick up more top draft picks as we've missed out the laste few years with gc and gws.
I've calmed down since the game has finished.
Good first half, few mistakes but it was also average conditions
After that is questionable and so frustrating
Umpiring below abysmal- I have no words for it.
They intentionally brought port back into the game and imo they were told to do it by powers above.
Imo Benny Gale and his team should contact the afl first thing about the umpiring.
Tuck, maric excellent and jack not far behind- I think he is great for someone who is clearly injured and you can tell he has a problem when he sprays them to the left.
Morris also great on a ground he's familiar with
Houli I thought was dissapointing today

Taking into account your differences with Monk, Butcher was awful today but the footy Butcher played in the last couple of games last year Princess Jacqueline has not been able to string together in four years at Melbourne. At least Butcher's psyche isn't shot at this stage as is Princess Jacqueline's. :lol :rollin :lol

By the way I'm with you Tony I thought Jack was awful today bar the last quarter. Took a few contested marks and looked dangerous in the last quarter. There has not been a game this year when he hasn't given away a free for trying to take make of the year. At least in the last quarter after Dimma took a few of our leaders aside at 3 quarter time Jack at least looked like a forward playing decent footy.

Nonetheless the umpiring in the third quarter was a disgraceful attempt by umpire Mc Skull Shine to bring Port back into the game.  He didn't hold back with 50m penalties or free kicks at all unless they should of gone to us. At one stage it was 16 to 2 just in the 3rd quarter.  I even seen him pay one to a Port player because he was taken out by another Port player.  These stuffing imbeciles need to stay objective and call the game not try and influence the results or create some artificial contest when there is none.  Is it too much to ask they do what they are paid for nothing more nothing less?

unfortunately a team like our without that class and polish gets sucked into this vortex where we allow the umps to rape us
collingwood, eagles , blues etc can shrug that off and be convincing
It was amazing when we recaptured the pressure that kept the power to 2 goals in the first half  in the final term , there was still dubious free kicks. But port fumbled with it and turned it over.

Jack was a dud today, got a few gifts as well, he ends up with 4 and everyone comes out of the woodwork saying he had a solid game. Was good in the final quarter first 3 was nothing short of disgraceful

The point was, Jack's terrible game still netted him 4 goals.  Butcher got toweled up by Dea.

Obviously didnt see when he attacked the contest and set up a goal with handball

And u obviously didn't see the numerous clangers and times he tried to take marks behind his opponent in the pockets. His last quarter was solid as I already said, his first 3 were poo. 4 goals flattered him

I wasnt the one who made the sweeping statement that his first three qtrs were poo.

Only forward to get goals today, and to get four when you are not in top form is still a statement.

anyhow, cbf arguing this, he was poo today, has been poo all year and needs to extract the digit and start presenting like an elite fwd should, getting sick and tired of inept efforts from him and TV. That is my opinion and nothing will change it

Port's last goal of the match was thanks to a turnover by Shane who ignored option 1,2 and 3 and lairised only to kick the ball meekly to the opposition which started the chain of events that led to Port's goal on the siren.

Moral to the story, whether Edwards plays 20 minutes or 120 minutes the errors in his game still stand out like a sore thumb.

Good win in those conditions, Tuck was awesome again  :thumbsup

Your boy Butcher got a bath today. Almost as much value as Griffiths IMHO.

Butcher is the next Kosi. Watts is even better.

Bugger about the goal to them after the siren.

Final Score.

Richmond   3.2    8.7    9.10   13.13-91
Port Adel.   1.2    2.2     6.4     8.6-54

Goals: Riewoldt 4, Nahas 3, King 2, Miller, Deledio, Newman, Conca.

One decent qtr got us the win.
Considering we won 3 quaters , thtas a bit harsh MT !!!
No doubt taz if you gave me us winning 3 quarters on the scoreboard and a 37 point win at the start of the day I would've taken it so as the old saying goes a win is a win. Having said that, I was judging our performance on quality and my comment was based on us only playing one quarter that was top 4 standard. The other 3 were ordinary especially that rubbish 3rd qtr. The irony of today is we played far worse than the previous two weeks yet we won comfortably in the end.

When you are 1-4 any win is a good win.
Not often we have a game "in the bag" at half time.

How about some facts.  The options were behind him so either poor voices or Shed needs eyes in the back of his head.  The pressure causes a partial smother.  The following play ends in a Boak point.  A point, not a goal. From the kick out, Batch drops a mark and the Houli punches the arms and gives away a free kick.

Fell alseep in the third quarter. Could have won by a significantly larger margin. A must win but not the greatest of wins. Sometimes you have to grind out results

i think the third quatrer was down to a combinationof things. Mainly that port lifted their work rate and intensity whil we played like it was simply going to be a continuation of the second quarter.

In the third port gave us very little time and space and continually got numbers to the contest, something vital in any game of footy, let alone one played in those conditions.

I also thought that we looked a little flat right from the start of the game,so to come away with a 6 goal win was a good result.

dont you just love the way one bloke gets singled out for one poor kick on a day that saw so many, as well as lots of fumbles and dropped marked?

thats not the point Al. He has been given ample opportunities over the last 6 years to string together half a dozen good solid games and has not.

He is a midfielder/HB Flanker is he not?

He plays the majority of games/minutes does he not?(not yesterday)

He fails time and time again to do something, anything given the minutes he spends on the ground does he not?

Im annoyed why? because we should be getting valuable minutes into players like Elton  and not persisting with time wasters like Edwards who rarely find the pill

Edwards should make way for Elton and Mcguane for Vickery. If we cop 1 or 2 injuries we are screwed so we dont blood any new players. Im glad we are letting Dea settle in the team. We need to know if they can play

Thats what happens when Pettifer, McMahon, Wallace, Hyde etc. get delisted.

no this isnt about anyone else on the list. Nor is this is about him yesterday. This is about him since the first day he has arrived at the club.

He was great a few years back in the last half dozen games of the year and everyone hoped he would go on, but he hasn't.

His spot on the list IMO is an absolute waste. Much better served getting game time into Elton and others.

IMO he seems a very timid footballer who seems afraid to hit the packs and the man

Agree it certainly felt that way at the game. Port clearly got a rocket at half time because their blokes who h adn't been running started to run

And we had blokes either not running or running up & down on the one spot in the 3rd.

True, what really stood out was how during the times we tried to switch & rush forward they had already blocked the space up a ahead, we didn't really seem to have a way to cut through it, hence why our ball movement seemed slower than me sprinting for the plane  ;D

That was the most obvious thing of the day, how flat we were in the 1st qtr. We always looked like the better team but struth the intensity of the last few weeks was no where to be seen early on and in that 20 minute patch in the 3rd. Seemed like when we got 7+ goals up at the start of the third we took the foot of the pedal and to perfectly honest we are nowhere near good enough to be doing that ..yet

He has now been betrayed by a group of players who lack character and are only motivated when shamed by the scoreboard - as they were after a pathetic second term at AAMI Stadium when Richmond (a very ordinary Richmond) crafted 10 scores to one and led by 41 points.

Yeah great conditions for big forwards you reckon.
But in saying that l dont give a rats ass about Butcher as he plays for someone else, but he has shown he can play AFL football.
But our professed dud in Riewoldt managed to kick 4.  ;)

Yeah he kicks most of them off the ground from the 10 metre box  :rollin plays from behind constantly, what sort of Coleman medallist leads into dead pockets every game. His a stubbie short of the six pack thats for sure. His got no second effort & his on his last chance by the coach  ;D
