Richmond keen to re-sign Nathan Foley

    Jon Ralph
    From: Herald Sun
    May 17, 2012

RICHMOND has started negotiations to re-sign potential free agent Nathan Foley, whose form has been a highlight of the Tigers' recent resurgence.

Foley, 26, has shaken off three years of injury and subdued form, and is averaging 6.5 tackles to go with his 23 possessions a week.

He would be on the free agency market if he came out of contract.

Richmond's head of football Craig Cameron said the Tigers were eager to re-sign Foley.

"We have started negotiations and we don't see any issues there," he said. "We are really happy with the way he's come back after 18 months out."

Foley has had surgery on his achilles tendon three times and played only 18 games in 2009-10.

But after 22 games - and more familiarity with coach Damien Hardwick's game plan - he is again playing electrifying football.

Richmond signed star midfielder Brett Deledio to a five-year deal earlier this year.

A Foley deal would leave only restricted free agent Luke McGuane and unrestricted Kelvin Moore and Shane Tuck unsigned.

Richmond president Gary March recently said the Tigers soon would try to extend the contracts of young stars Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, who are committed until the end of 2013.

Helmut probably working on 3 year deal only for Foley to break his ankle early next season.

....and to think 6 months ago a number of posters wanted him traded out.

Those who have had to work hard to make it will always work hard to maintain it. Foley's a perfect example of this.

yep and I was one of those simply because he has currency and there were massive question marks on whether he'd get back to his form of a few years back. Happy to have been proven worng

Come to think of it he still has currency now but it has increased  ;D

His trade currency has actually decreased because he is a free agent if he remains unsigned

ie. the boat for trading Foley has well and truly sailed

Is he a restricted or un-restricted Free Agent?

Does the fact he started as a rookie impact on his free agent status?

If he is restricted then his currency goes up wouldn't it?

Post by: gerkin greg on May 17, 2012, 04:00:50 PM
Trade currency goes down, ie. no-one will be giving up picks or players for him when they can get him as a free agent, restricted or unrestricted.

We'd get a formulated pick from the AFL as compo, and who knows what that would be.

Houli signs, Tigers set to stoke engine room
By Chloe Saltau
The Age
June 28, 2012

HAVING signed valuable recruit Bachar Houli to a two-year contract extension, Richmond is close to announcing a new deal with a key member of its engine room, Nathan Foley.

The Tigers announced yesterday that Houli, the rebounding defender and multicultural ambassador, would be a Tiger until at least the end of 2014, and general manager of football Craig Cameron last night indicated the club was close to re-signing Foley, too.

''We expect to have something on Nathan soon,'' he said. Foley, who would become a restricted free agent at season's end, is one of four Tigers who could return for Saturday's clash with Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

No doubt a fit Foley has indicated his value to the team this season and stuck it up a few knockers in the process.
Hope he inks a new deal and gets back into the side ASAP. We need him desperately in our push for a finals birth.

I'll give him one more season before writing him off (just because of how important I feel he is to our side). Needs to play 22 games next season with the output he was giving us before going down this year.

No point in holding him past 2013 if he is only going to play half a season again. If he does go down next year with the same ankle/achilles/heel related injury, definitely time to cash in on his currency (or what is left of it).

If he gets the same injury next year its curtains on career... His currency will be zero. Hopefully this is the last one and he puts it behind him. What odds of him coming back in the form he showed early this season after an achilles?

Considering he came back from an achilles and had the form he had, I reckon he'd be about right to recapture it. To me, him regaining his form is the least of my concerns. The problem with Axel is the injuries, needs to put it behind him as you said.

Foley signs new Tigers deal
By Laura Gardiner
Sports News First
28 August 2012 01:35PM EST

RICHMOND midfielder Nathan Foley has recommitted to the Tigers, with his new deal tying him to the club until at least the end of the 2014 season.

Foley, 26, has played 120 games since making his debut way back in Round 10, 2005 against Melbourne.

The hard-working on-baller copped a horror injury run this season, suffering a heel problem in Round 10 and then Achilles trouble, which ruled him out of action for the remainder of the year.

Before his injuries, Foley had averaged 23 disposals and nearly six tackles an outing from his 10 appearances.

He has become an integral cog in the Tigers' rising on-ball division, alongside surprise Brownlow favourite Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio.

Foley said he was excited for what season 2013 has in store for the Tigers, who narrowly missed out on a finals berth this year.

“It’s fantastic, (there's) some really exciting times coming up, so I was really excited to sign with the club," Foley told richmondfc.com.au.

"They’ve been fantastic and I’m looking forward to the future."

Foley said he was recovering well from surgery to repair his Achilles, with the on-baller targeting a strength program in as soon as a month.

“It’s all fine. I went and saw the surgeon last Tuesday and everything’s going to plan,” he said.

“It’s pretty quiet at the moment, there’s not too much you can do.

"But I’ve had no infection, or any dramas with it, so it’s all going smoothly at the moment.

“I’m about five weeks post-op, so I’ve just been doing a bit of shoulder work, a few upper-body weights, injury-prevention sort of stuff, groin strength.

"But it’s been pretty low-key at this stage.

“I’ll slowly transition out of the boot probably in the next fortnight and then probably in a month’s time, I’ll start getting some strength into it.”

Yep not a doubt in my mind if he'd played that games against GC we would not have lost because he would have taken care of 1/ the sentre square set-up and 2/ the rotations

He is injury prone.  He is just as likely to break down next year when we need him as well.  3 year contract for a player with chronic injuries is ridiculous.

Im a bit surpised given he can only play midfield and not forward or back I hope he retains his pace.
