AFL site is tipping the Hawks by 22 pts...

Preview: Richmond v Hawthorn
By Paul Daffey
Tue 22 May, 2012

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday, May 26, 1.45pm
LAST TIME: Hawthorn 17.13 (115) d Richmond 6.16 (52), round three, 2011 at the MCG

The ladder suggests a win for Hawthorn, who sits sixth (5-3) on the ladder while Richmond is 13th (3-5), but the Tigers are given a chance because of its record of pushing fancied rivals this season. Richmond has been in with a chance in all five losses only to slip up through lapses in concentration. Hawthorn has recovered from its letdown against the Sydney Swans in round five by recording strong wins over St Kilda, Melbourne and Fremantle.

THE FOUR POINTS

RICHMOND

1. Of all the weeks to miss Dylan Grimes through injury, this is the worst. Grimes was a revelation before tearing his hamstring during the loss against Essendon last week. His 54 marks before the Essendon game ranked him in the competition's top 10, highlighting his transition from being a pure stopper to a player capable of taking intercept marks and beginning counter-attacks. Grimes this week would have shared defensive duties with Alex Rance against the mighty duo of Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead. His absence means Jake Batchelor will push up to become the second tall defender or Ben Griffiths will be promoted from the Coburg Tigers.

2. A telling statistic from last weekend's 19-point loss to Essendon is the fact that tall forwards contributed only two of Richmond's 15 goals, with Jack Riewoldt and Brad Miller kicking one each. Midfielders Trent Cotchin (three goals), Dustin Martin (two) and Brett Deledio (one) were dangerous while rotating through full-forward, but the Tigers are going to need more from their tall forwards if they're to achieve sustainable success.

3. Essendon ruckmen Tom Bellchambers and Paddy Ryder were well on top in the first half last weekend, but Richmond big man Ivan Maric hit back to such an extent that he was ranked among the top few on the ground by the final siren. Maric faces lesser opponents this week: David Hale will be the Hawks' main ruckman, with Jarryd Roughead providing basic relief. The way appears to be clear for Maric to continue the form that would have him ranked highly in the Tigers' best and fairest award.

4. Richmond is said to be basing its game-plan on the Hawthorn model, which requires precise kicking out of defence and through the midfield. Statistics somewhat support this view, with both teams ranked high for disposals (Richmond second, Hawthorn fifth) and marks (Richmond third, Hawthorn fourth). The damning area for both clubs is clearances. Hawthorn is ranked 12th while Richmond is 18th. Both teams would do well to concentrate on getting the ball in tight as well as disposing of it out wide.

HAWTHORN
1. Hawthorn has won six of its seven clashes against Richmond since 2005. The only loss in that time was in round 20, 2008, which served as a wake-up call ahead of a successful finals campaign. The Hawks' 63-point win in the teams' only clash last season was the biggest margin between the sides since Richmond won by 76 points in round 15, 1997.

2. The Hawks' midfielders have lifted their form at stoppages in the past fortnight. After winning the clearance count in only one of their first six matches, Hawthorn thrashed the Demons 40-22 in round seven and Fremantle 48-24 last week. Liam Shiels had to warm into the season after missing rounds one and two with a quad injury, but he's had 13 clearances in the past two weeks and is hitting the form that made him one of the game's most improved players last year.

3. Clinton Young had 20 kicks last week in his 100th game, the second-most of his career and the most since round 12, 2006 against Richmond. The free-wheeling left-footer has been given a licence to kick by coach Alastair Clarkson and he's used it - he had only five handballs. With Isaac Smith playing a similar role on the opposite wing, the Hawks have two players who can find space and drive the ball inside forward 50 with great effect.

4. Acting captain Jordan Lewis has been outstanding this season. He has collected the scalps of some of the game's most damaging players, including St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo in round six and Stephen Hill last week, while at the same time hurting the opposition on the scoreboard. The 26-year-old has booted at least one goal in 10 of his past 11 matches. Tigers star Trent Cotchin shapes as a likely match-up on Saturday.

AFL.com.au prediction: Hawthorn by 22 points

Hawks coach warn of Tigers' powers

Richmond might be 13th on the AFL ladder but they're No.1 for uncontested possessions and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has warned his side of the dangers of allowing the Tigers to get their running game going.

Sixth-placed Hawthorn have an edge in experience ahead of Saturday's round-nine clash at the MCG against the up-and-coming Tigers, but Clarkson says ruckman Ivan Maric has made a big difference to Richmond since crossing from Adelaide this season.

"They've got potent forwards. They've brought (Ty) Vickery back into their side this week who can do some real damage in the front end of the ground as well," Clarkson said on Friday.

"If we allow them to get some free ball on the outside they can be quite damaging.

"If Richmond win that midfield battle it will make it very difficult for us.

"We're very mindful that they've got a very powerful midfield in particular and a ruckman who's in stellar form for them in Maric who has been a great inclusion to their club.

"We've got a lot of respect for 'Dimma' (Richmond coach Damien Hardwick) and his coaching staff and the way they've gone about it.

"They've really built well over the last three years.

"We also like to think our experience and knowledge of Richmond will help us get over the line tomorrow."

While the Hawks are unchanged, Richmond have recalled ruck/forward Vickery and key-position player Ben Griffiths for Brad Miller and injured defender Dylan Grimes.

Clarkson said apart from the midfield led by Trent Cotchin, Richmond's percentage of 102.96 showed their defence was holding up well.

Richmond's backline will be stretched against tall forwards Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and ruck/forward David Hale.

In contrast, Clarkson is celebrating having Josh Gibson and Stephen Gilham both fit and playing alongside each other in defence.

"All of the sides who seriously challenge at the end of the year have to have really stable and strong defences," Clarkson said.

"We think we structure up quite well when they're both playing. But they've only been doing it again for the last two games."

Clarkson, who was an assistant coach at Port Adelaide in 2004 when Hardwick was playing at the club, says the pair's friendship will mean little on Saturday.

"We spend a lot of time together. Our girls play in basketball sides together so we still see each other two or three times a week," Clarkson said.

"We've got a great friendship but that all goes out the window when you're competing against each other."

Wet weather footy so the ball will be on the ground a lot more than usual and more contested. We got smashed by them last year in the wet due to their bigger stronger bodies at the contest. We can't let that happen again today. We need to be first and hard at the footy and apply the K.I.S.S. principle in the wet.

Due to unforeseen circumstances my hatred of Hawthorn has elevated to Carlscum status.

For this reason today is a non negotiable.

The boys have to win today, no ifs, no buts, no maybes.
I won't except "should've, could've and wouldve".

It's a MUST WIN game. Not for any other reason but selfishness on my part.

C'mon Tigers! Win for your ol' mate Tigra today. You'll make me a very very happy man.

Cmon boys.
Today there's no excuses.
There's no holding back. Don't think just DO!  Put your bodies in the line not just for yourselves or for the jumper or for pride but for Mr. Tigra....
He deserves your best today & will not except anything less. Moment by moment, quarter by quarter, contest by contest. Play 'em as if it's your last!
Never give the game up or give in in any way. Lead by example! In every game there's a crossroad & when you get to that crossroad you either step up or step down.
Today's the day to earn back the respect of the footy world. Today you have arrived. Today everyone will know the TIGER is wide awake and is very very hungry. There's nothing more tigerish than a tiger!

Sooner or later we were going to have a game that combined the first quarter against Swans, 2nd against Poort, 3rd against Essendon... then come up with a thumping last quarter in the same game to give us a percentage booster against a highly fancied opponent.

How much was over 39.5 paying?

Today's the day to earn back the respect of the footy world. Today you have arrived. Today everyone will know the TIGER is wide awake and is very very hungry. There's nothing more tigerish than a tiger!

Best l seen a team play in the wet for 4 solid quarters & totally dominate all over the ground. What stunned me more was Griffiths long kicks with a wet ball kicking over the Hawks zone. More happy he got through the game & can play next week. Jackson attack & kicking, stunning goal. Edwards coming out of his shell played a good game, Kingy back to attacking anything that moves including the football. Morris well his just a smart skilled footballer who is guts & takes the game on. Took Rioli to the cleaners. Rance freaks me out sometimes & destroyed reconcilliation. Tucky my man was BOG & gives those midfielders the best blocks. Maric recruit of the year shared BOG, Rewoldt has finally worked out that you must go to the ball like a champion to be a champion. Every player on that ground yesterday was so committed it what every supporters has wanted to see & will remember for along time.  :clapping  :clapping  :clapping

The best win I have seen in a long long time. We were undermined we were under dogs and were playing against a top four side who was not far off being full strength. It was a great team effort. Maric was outstanding in the ruck. He destroyed Hale. Griffiths deservedly was in the best. I will never forget that first goal being set up by a long bomb from Griffiths and a brilliant tap on by Maric. Tuck and Cotchin were outstanding. Even players like Jackson and Edwards played well. Morris deserves alot of credit for his attack on the ball and his team oriented play. The fact that we were not outscored in any quarter and responded to each challenge was the most pleasant aspect of the game and our forward line functioned well. King and Nahas played very good games.

one major thing the side was doing yesterday was running in a swarm. When we did get tight, we had plenty of options. If we made a mistake there was a player there to pickup. At one stage we had so many around the contest that the players were getting dizzy. Yes we did get caught out a couple of times which gave them gift goals but every side does over 2 hours at some stage in todays football. But by playing that way we created so many goals & it took preasure off all the players. Buddy & Rioli looked 2nd tier players. Even Sam Mitchell was so frustrated & his gawn by the MRP surely

Goal for goal and as a long suffering was just waiting for Dawks to nail a couple in a row but we fought like mothers and got it back each and every time, THIS IS THE NEW RICHMOND !!!!!!

Luke Hodge just said on the Channel 7 footy show that Richmond was outstanding & made Hawthorn look 2nd rate. Also stated the Richmond midfield is great & the St-Kilda coach said they were worried about our midfield & how Tuck is very under-rated. l like Hodge, he never tells it any way but the truth.

Hawks were only missing Hodge.

What impressed me also was the spread once we got the ball.

Fast, furious, accurate and deadly. The linking up was magnificent.

Our skills have improved exponentially in the last two years.

talking to a Dawks supporter this morning who was at the game, he reckon had Buddy kicked them 4 easy goals he missed that it would have been different & he denies Rance beat Buddy.

Dont know what game he was watching cause l know 100% he was there but not with us & l said to him Buddy cant kick anyway  ;D he always misses easy shots & Rance raped him lol

One sour Dawks supporter said when l told him Rance was easy one of the best on ground& the footy show votes proved it. His replied with the footy show knows nothing about football, lol  ;D

thats why they work in football media you stupid Dawk  :lol some people are just born stupid  ;D

The roar when Jackson snapped that arsey goal at the start of the 4th is amazing.

It rolls around the ground, starting from behind Jackson where they could see it sailing through and finishing up in a deafening roar.

One thing I really noticed was that players really ran to position well creating multiple options all over the ground.  It gave the player with the ball extreme confidence that when he took possession and looked ahead he could left, right or straight without hesitating or panicking.

It almost seemed to be a thing that is programmed into the players and they know where they are all supposed to be or going to be!!

I guess you would have to credit Ross Smith with that??

I also think that the team is getting confidence in itself and players believe their team mates will win the contest therefore they can spread to receive the kick..

5 Tigers plus Dimma made the Herald-Sun's team of the week:

BP:  Steven Morris - Been a ripper pick-up as yet another mature-aged recruit.

CHB: Alex Rance - All of a sudden the jittery moments have been replaced with poise.

MID: Trent Cotchin - A Rolls Royce whose spiral continues upwards.

FF: Jack Riewoldt - The competition is so much better when Jack is jumping.

SUB: Addam Maric - Provided genuine run and energy in the last quarter.

COACH: Damien Hardwick - The size of the win gets Dimma in ahead of Nathan Buckley.

No coaches votes for Jack? They both must have considered the game over at 3/4 time.

The floodgates opening in the last quarter was due to us absorbing what Hawthorn through at us in the 3rd. The media can make excuses for Hawthorn all they like but the Hawks through all they had at us in the 3rd qtr yet couldn't make any inroads. By time-on their efforts were in vain and their spirit and belief finally broke when we kicked the last two goals to stretch our lead to 5 goals. Once that happened it was finally great to see us show no mercy and put a team to the sword in the last qtr.

I'm glad the media gave us some time in the light though, and waited until the last night/today to really start getting into the Hawks. It was a tale of two complete opposites. We announced by thrashing the flag favourites, and the Hawks, and not for the first time this year, crumbled when challenged.

What makes this win so good is that it was a win when things matter. It was not one of those wins at the end of the season where things have already been settled.

further to that, it wasnt just a fall over the line 10-20 point win that can be attributed to a bit of luck here and there, or an off day by the opponent, this was a flogging, we tore them a new one. For the first time in yrs and yrs this was a win bc of our ferocity and brilliance, not bc the opposition were poo
