Preview: Carlton v Richmond
By Jason Phelan and Paul Daffey
afl.com.au
Tue 24 Jul, 2012

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Saturday July 28, 7.40pm
LAST TIME: Carlton 18.17 (125) d Richmond 12.9 (81), round one, 2012 at the MCG

Carlton is still fighting to scrape into the eight after a gutsy win against the Western Bulldogs, but Richmond is an unlikely September participant after two heart-breaking losses to Gold Coast and North Melbourne. The fortunes of both clubs have dipped since they met back in round one when the Blues still had top-four aspirations and the Tigers were confident of a return to the finals.

THE FOUR POINTS

CARLTON

1. The Blues were looking down the barrel at 25 points down late in the second quarter against the Dogs, but ultimately kept their season alive with an 18-point win. The challenge for Brett Ratten's men is to reproduce that effort, which has been a problem for them for much of the year.

2. Carlton's lengthy injury list has been a key factor in the club's battles this season, but it could shorten considerably ahead of this clash. Mitch Robinson was a late withdrawal last week with calf tightness and will undergo a test along with Matthew Kreuzer (hip), Kane Lucas (hamstring) and Zach Tuohy (back).

3. Ratten was forced to play three debutants - Levi Casboult, Frazer Dale and Tom Bell - last week and all did enough to be considered for selection against the Tigers. The coach all but guaranteed tough inside mid Bell will get another go and Casboult, while horribly mismatched in the ruck, showed enough up forward to suggest he could be worth persevering with in the absence of Jarrad Waite.

4. Marc Murphy was named as skipper in place of the suspended Chris Judd and he led a midfield group against the Dogs that appeared to be on the cusp of regaining some lost momentum. Rob Warnock's return will help Murphy and co. get first use of the ball, and with Murphy and Andrew Carrazzo now regaining peak fitness after long-term injuries, the Blues' onball brigade could be the difference here despite the continued absence of Judd.

RICHMOND
1. The Tigers' recent record against Carlton is deplorable, with the Blues winning all seven games since the Tigers' victory in round one, 2008. There have been some sizeable margins, too, including the Blues 103-point victory in round 15 last season. In the opening round this season the Blues inflicted on the Tigers their biggest loss for the season, by 44 points. Notwithstanding the fact that Richmond must win to keep alive its finals hopes, there's plenty for the Tigers to play for.

2. stuff Alex Rance was deemed to have lost his duel with North Melbourne's Drew Petrie last week after Petrie kicked seven goals, including five in the last quarter. But those figures do Rance an injustice. The 21-year-old was superb in holding Petrie for three quarters. It might sound odd given Petrie's last-quarter heroics, but Rance would be keen to take his form from the North Melbourne match into the match against Carlton.

3. Another Richmond defender, Steven Morris, was in fine form against North Melbourne last week. Morris had a career-high 23 disposals, and once again he split packs with his trademark attack on the ball, but it was his run and carry that was truly eye-catching. The 23-year-old's task this week will be to quell either Eddie Betts or Jeff Garlett.

4. Full-forward Jack Riewoldt was equal parts inspiring and frustrating against the Roos. He was superb when he led and took the ball out in front, but he was infuriating when he tried to wrestle his opponent, Scott Thompson - a ploy that generally ended with Thompson thumping the ball out of danger. Riewoldt is likely to have few better chances to kick a bag than he does against the Blues' undermanned defence.

AFL.com.au prediction: Richmond by five points

Ratten playing games talking down the chances of Kreuzer and co. coming back this week to play us...

Ratten said Kreuzer (hip) was more "likely than unlikely" but added "when I say that it usually goes the other way", while Robinson (calf) and Tuohy (back) could both be significant inclusions into the team that steamrolled the out-of-form Dogs in the second half last Saturday night.

Ruckman Robert Warnock will also be available for selection after serving a one-match VFL suspension. Although whether he comes straight back into the senior team or plays VFL will depend on Kreuzer.

Mark Maclure still has his Richmond-hating hat on  ::)

Carlton v Richmond, MCG, Saturday 7.40pm (EST)
I think Carlton were fantastic last week. Can they stand up against the Tigers? Richmond are up and down like a yo-yo and they just don't know how to win close games. Seriously, they have got no idea what you have to do when it gets tight; they freeze, they do the wrong things, they get selfish. Let's hope they do it again.

You ask the same question Mrakov every week  :)

The answer is always the same

No teams are released to the general media etc until after 6.25pm each week that is after Ch7's news

Ch7 paid extra $$$ to have the right to release the teams first

Got a feeling about this one, only because we came so close to the Roos and really should of won...I thought we were going to get smashed.

IMO we will either blow the scum away or they will win after getting and early break on us and us having to play catch up(which would be a shame).

I can't see another nail biter like we have had in the last two weeks. I also think the boys have had enough of the close ones, I think the Blues are vunerable and I think the RFC are sick of losing to these pricks!!!!

I have never rated the scum, I have always said that and the weeks during their losing streak proved that point.

Carn Tiges, set yourself up for the round one encounter next year, let's stop being the bitch.

The boys have to win! no ifs, no buts, no maybes.
We won't except "should've, could've or wouldve".
Cmon boys!
Tonight there's no excuses.
There's no holding back. Don't think just DO!  Put your bodies on the line not just for yourselves or for the jumper or for your mates or even for pride, but for Us Richmond supporters.
We deserves your best tonight & will not except anything less.
Moment by moment, quarter by quarter, contest by contest. Play 'em as if it's your last!
Never give the game up or give in in any way. Lead by example!
In every game there's a crossroad & when you get to that crossroad you either step up or step down.
Today's the day to earn back the respect of the footy world. Today you have arrived. Today everyone will know the TIGER is wide awake and is very very hungry. There's nothing more tigerish than a tiger!

C'mon Tigers! Win for your those of us that you've dissatisfied, disappointed and let down.
Those of us that have put up with so much crap over the last 30 years especially from the likes of the cheating scum we play tonight.
Tonights a clean slate for the year, all the close losses will be forgiven. The disappointments for the year will be forgotten, even losing the unlosable game in Cairns we will overlook if your able to belt that scum right out of the finals!
It's time to repay all of us.

Let's hope we've learnt now how to play wet weather footy as it's not a night to stuff around overpossessing the footy by hand. It's going to be about playing in front and being first to the ball, winning the contested  footy and kicking long and direct to the forwards with hopefully Kingy and Nahas crumbing a few.

Actually I have been watching Ellis a bit lately, I think he needs to work on his kicking, I am not that impressed with it to tell you the truth. It would be interesting to find out his efficiency.

Edwards looked a point, we should be in front but poor kicking and basic mistakes are letting the blues into the game.
Kelvin Moore? It's actually sad to see, Newman not much better.
Houli is one of my favourite players and people in the comp, however he hasn't prepared as a professional athlete shoud and I question him playing tonight.

After watching the Hawks its like comparing Black Caviar to a cart horse. Our disposal and general execution is nothing short of woeful. Kingy has had two clangers resulting in two goals. Never seen so many shank kicks, what do these guys do at training? Again our kicking for goal is awful, the Hawks defenders would fair dinkum be better shot for goals then 90% of our side. We are so far short of AFL top 8 standard thank God we arent going to get there, a final would be an absolute embarrassment. We really need to address kicking efficiency as a number 1 priority when recruiting, i am sure the top sides do. Also does anyone one have statistics on McGone's number of frees against, he would have to be an all time champion.

Sounds like a post from 5 years ago...God surley we have improved.... ;D

I'm sure i have read somehwere that muslim athletes can get permission from their guru or whatever to eat and drink, if only water, to prepare for professional sport, so not sure why houli cant? his own decision?

stuff this, it's just poo to watch.

They might have a lot of stars out, but we still let their remaining stars chop us up. Then they stick some stuffing spud called Bell on Cotchin and he does a stopping job on him. Since when did touching a player constitute a hold, all McGuane has done is give away frees, can't even provide a stuffing contest and bring the ball to ground!!!! Our skill level is Wallace 2009 era.

3/4 time

Richmond   5.2    5.7    8.11-59

Two very ordinary sides who won't make the Eight. Best if we don't win based on our 'form' the last 6 weeks - at least the delusion of making finals will disappear and we'll get a good first draft pick. The opposition shutout Cotch, Dusty and Lids and our skill level falls apart and goals dry up :help.

It wasn't a matter of if Carlton were going to pinch the game, it was when.

It was always going to happen.

Slipping over, fumbling, horrible skills, we were at our Wallace era best.

The umpiring was horrible, for both sides, whatever happened to holding the ball? The whistles were always 2 seconds late so you end up wondering what the free kick was for.

They put 18 names into a hat, the only players that weren't in it were Cotchin, Morris and Deledio.

Jacko was the unlucky one.

Slipping over, fumbling, horrible skills, we were at our Wallace era best.

I haven't seen us as bad for fumbling and dropped marks all season.  I could wear the conditions as an excuse if both teams did it but they didn't.

our administration will never have the balls to take on a project like that. we will go to draft and if we are lucky we will get 1 decent junior, maybe hartley will get us another C grader like Houli or Grigg to add to the depth.

When it really counts its brain fades and poor skills that kill us every time, not sure what Hardwick can do about this, either you have a football brain or you dont. Sick of seeing us allow the ball easily out of our attacking zone for last minute opposition goals. And how congested was our 50m attacking zone when we needed a goal with 45 secs to go, thats how difficult it should have been for the GC against us but no, we play a 6 man attack and hand the game to them on a platter. Sorry to go back to the GC game but there and then was our season. It wasnt just losing that game but i think physically due to the humidity its killed our run for the ensuing weeks, ask any conditioning coach, conditions such that they were in Cairns can take a number of weeks to overcome the effects, we just cant finish off games we should be winning. How many games is that now where we have had more inside 50s than the opposition but still kick a losing score?

The boys are up and about after beating the Hawks and St Kilda in high standard games of football.

Then all of a sudden the confidence just disappears just as the draw is meant to be opening up for us  :huh

2 goal win against GWS. The commentators today were bagging out Collingwood in the 2nd quarter when GWS pulled within 2 goals. Next time I stuff over to the game Collingwood are 100+ up and they were resting players. We seem to think a 2 goal lead is enough and we'll play out time for the rest of the game, against any side in any conditions.

Another loss to GC Suns, we have everything to play for and we're 6 goals down in the 2nd quarter.

Tonight, every backman packed his shorts and spoiled the ball every single time, no-one was game to take a mark. There was no system out of the middle, it was just get ball and bomb it forward all the time. They are completely shot of confidence.

4 weeks ago I saw the best quarter of footy we've played since the 1995 game against the Kangaroos. 8 goals against top 4 side Adelaide, 5 minutes after the 2nd quarter started the game was basically on an even kiel and I knew we weren't going to win. Is it just a lack of experience, a few duds letting the whole side down, fitness??

I hope we can work it out.

McGone pinch hitting in the ruck is testimony to this, in fact ever since McGone has come back into the team the whole skill set seems to have dropped away, its almost like the other players saying in their heads, "if this spud can get a game then i cant possibly be dropped".

Agree in part with that Al but look at blokes like McGuane giving away stupid frees to Thornton late in games as an examples.

We have players in the lower tiers who cannot do the basic fundamentals for the most part and then our lower tiers just don't step up.

Houli is a squib. Edwards does not impact as a 6 yr player does. Jack is a prima donna. McGuane is a dud plain and simple no other way of putting it. He's the kid that gets electrocuted every time making the same basic mistakes zap zap zap. Blokes like Armfield are better than Edwards fact. You can sugar coat Titch all you like I'm never ever going to be a converter.

Jako don't get me started. King whilst all heart is not the answer and whilst Nahas is kicking goals then he stays for now. Conca needs to get to the next level.

Where is the poise from our seniors Morris does the hard thing and then has a brainfade and boots it out on the full to set up Blues winning goal.

Unfortunantely under the cream there is not much else I'm afraid and until we get kids in the draft or trade and then start expelling these blokes that have let us down time and time again we will just be a heartbreak hotel footy club.

The base is there but we have a long way to go. Our bottom 6 are suburban standard and hence we can't win these tight ones. Too much to too few and not enough class and poise. SImple as that. More pain until we make the gain.

By the way how can a 9 goal quarter go 36 minutes. Was the timekeeper watching the Olympics?

Jako was okay today but still made 3 critical skill errors by foot that tarnish him and in the overall scheme of things make his game just average.

The simple fact his we fail in most basic footy smarts and until we do that we wont win much games. This has killed the club for the last 20 years and beyond.Turnovers and stupid decsions and skill errors.

Our football department should have a good hard look at themselve to rewarding games to guys that dont deserve it.McGuane,Moore,A.Maric,Dea.Play the kids.Allkilled us tonight with there skills and stupif frees.

I'm just wondering if we have a fitness issue it seems to me we struggle to run out games and the last part of quarters bigtime. So many teams get goals in the last few minutes against us.

Cotchin and Martin in the first quarter were absolutely fantastic. Lids was extremely good too. Once these guys were all heavily tagged in once again showed why we are in the position we are currently in - NO DEPTH! There was not one player who could stand up and take their place. Tuck is a ball winning machine but he had no one to finish his good work. Conca and Ellis are still raw babies (Ellis cost us 3 goals from errors last night) and Grigg is a wingman/finisher that needs the others to feed him the ball (this is not a slight on him, it's his role).

We either need Foley back, Conca to step up further, Helbig to recover and start playing games and plain and simple - more genuine midfield depth.

The other obvious deficiencies that were exposed again last night is 1) our one dimensional forwardline - stop Jack and we have no other tall marking option. McGuane is rubbish both as a foward and ruck. In fact he he useless as a backman too. I hope we are just trying to get games into him for trade purposes  :pray

The other area was our defence. Post is like a scared rabbit. He won't mark because he is fearful of the ball spilling so he double fists it. Grimes was similar in his first few games I remember but Post has had these mental issues every since he started. Moore is done. He is too slow both following the lead and turning. He allowed two goals through from his lack of speed/movement last night.

For the rest of the season I want to see Arnot and Helbig played (if uninjured). I want to see Griffiths have stints up forward and Astbury played back. I want Batch back in Moore's place. I was Houli rested until after the Ramadan - he looks tired (wish he would put his head over the ball - never goes in which is a shame b/c he is a good user of the ball - another wingman imo).

The sad fact is we have nothing else coming through. Our depth is terrible and it has cost us when it matters most.  :banghead

Agree with most of this post but it only tells the tale from one side.  Why did we let Murphy run free?  Why did he have so much space and time to deliver the football.  They were able to shut down our three quality ball users and we paid no respect to Murphy by playing Conca on him.  If Murphy was locked down, we would have won that game easily.  If we did something to free up lids and Cotchin.  We would have won the game.  It all comes back to coaching.

Following from unplugged train of thought - Tigers appear to be short a couple of good lock down players.

Gary Ablett, Andrew Swallow and Mark Murphy have racked up more possessions than our whole fwd line in the past 3 games!

Appears that Hardwick has the mentallity of "we can match them" in a war of possessions - but when the plan fails 3 weeks in a row its time to make some changes.

I hope to god that Simon Black gets a minder next game! Hate to see he rack up 30 odd possessions and we lose the game by less than 6 points!
