Moving onto this weekend's game, the Lions will be coming off the longest trek in footy from Perth (5 hr flight) and a six day break after being flogged by around 100 pts. So we're favourites with the bookies :-\.
Anyone from OER going up to the 'Gabba for the game?
-
Yep, up from the Gold Coast. ;D
-
The wife brought our tickets yesterday.... ;D
Lets hope we can win this one, the kids haven't seen a game for years so it would be great for them.... :gotigers :gotigers :gotigers
-
WAT, I reckon you should sit by the boundary and encourage the boys not to go down the path of mental weakness :shh maybe even give the lions a spray or two.
We are favourites again?? :lol what a joke. Will be lucky to win 2-3 more games if that this year.
-
Going to Brisbane, taking the peanuts to the game
"Yeh" :'(

The Bears will murder us.

Maybe I didn't word it correctly but you know what I meant, wasn't taking the mickey :thumbsup
Lions coming off 100 pt loss and 6 day break and we are favs. Doesn't mean anything.
Brisbane have been good up there this year and their midfied have been very handy
I will be very happy with a win up there and build some confidence coming back to melbourne

Where are the OERites sitting? My crew will be in Sec 22, Row H.

Ahh the good old Lions match, one of my favourite games to look forward to as I reflect on that great man Jackstar made one of his all time great call how we would regret letting Rainsey go and how he would be playing finals with the Lions.
-
In fair Raines is the best tagger in the comp and will win the Brownlow.
I like Rainesy. has done well up there
-
yeah just like Usernames prediction that Tambling is playing the role Dimma asked off him and will be a great midfielder.
Il wait for that like i wait for Edwards to become the permier midfielder at Punt Road

Preview: Brisbane Lions v Richmond
Richmond has won the past four games against the Lions at the Gabba. Can it break its three-game losing streak on Saturday?
By Michael Whiting and Paul Daffey
31/07/2012 8:35 PM
WHERE AND WHEN: The Gabba, Saturday August 4, 7.40pm
LAST TIME: Richmond 18.17 (125) d Brisbane Lions 14.10 (94), round 13, 2011, at the Gabba
Both teams are out of the finals race and both are coming off disappointing losses, but Saturday night's Lions-Tigers match has the ingredients of a ripper. The Lions let themselves down with a 98-point thrashing from West Coast on Sunday but have had a solid past six weeks, while for the third week in a row the luckless Tigers lost by less than a kick against Carlton. Both have exciting young talent (Rich, Redden and Rockliff against Cotchin, Martin and Deledio) and both have spearheads (Brown and Riewoldt) that can tear any game apart. Just who wants to fight more with their finals chances dashed may prove the difference.
THE FOUR POINTS
Brisbane Lions
1. Last week captain Jonathan Brown said the Lions could not let their season peter out or it would carry over into 2013. Following a lacklustre win over Gold Coast and sub-par performance against West Coast, they risk doing exactly that with another poor showing against the Tigers. Brown wanted 10 wins for the season - and that must include Saturday night.
2. In both wins over the Lions last year, the Tigers midfield ran riot. Although Nathan Foley and Trent Cotchin topped the disposal tally in the 26 and 31-point victories respectively, it was Dustin Martin who cut the Lions to shreds. He had 35 touches in the first win and a game-changing 22 and five goals in the second. Watch for former Tiger Andrew Raines to run with the robust Martin, despite the silky Cotchin having a better season.
3. Midfielder Jack Redden seems to continually slip under the radar. While his young teammates Daniel Rich and Tom Rockliff steal the headlines, Redden is the midfield glue teams need week in and week out. He has averaged 25 touches a game this season and is top-10 in the League for tackles. In a badly beaten team against the Eagles, the 21-year-old excelled, with 28 disposals, and game highs in both contested possessions (17) and clearances (11).
4. The Lions have simply not given their forwards enough chances to kick winning scores in the past four weeks. Despite getting enough ball (down by an average of just 10 disposals a match against the opposition), they have gone inside 50 a paltry 45 times a match. It's hard to kick enough goals when the ball is not getting down there.
Richmond
1. Surely, Richmond can't lose four games in a row by less than a goal but then again, nothing is impossible when you're talking about the drama kings of Punt Road. After their losses to Gold Coast (two points), North Melbourne (four) and Carlton (four), the Tigers will pull out every stop possible to ensure there's no repeat against the Lions. The danger is that the Tigers' fear of further ignominy will prompt a tentative, safety-first approach when boldness is what is needed if they're to come away with a win.
2. If you live in Victoria, you'd have no idea that Richmond is not facing a bottom-dweller, as Victorians don't consider the Lions a team on level footing. But, Victorians, both teams are on seven wins. Besides geographic considerations, the Tigers are higher in estimations in southern thinking because they've been spoken of in terms of the finals whereas the Lions have never been afforded such praise. This match will provide a good guide as to whether Victorians should cast their gaze a little north sometimes.
3. Pity the poor Lions stuff. Or maybe he's in for an easy week. Richmond full-forward Jack Riewoldt failed to kick a goal against Carlton, bringing forth much comment about his frustrating ways. Commentators of no lesser standing than Mick Malthouse implored him to stop wrestling and start leading — and it seems Mick and others have a point. Riewoldt is more productive when he's sprinting out of the goalsquare rather than remaining rooted to it. He needs to find his wheels again.
4. The Gabba holds no fears for the Tigers going on their record at the ground since their first encounter with a Brisbane club, in this case the Bears, in 1993. Since then, Richmond has won eight games and the Bears/Lions have won seven. The most impressive aspect for the Tigers is that they've won the past four matches against the Lions at the Gabba: in 2005 by four points, 2006 (14 points), 2010 (19 points) and 2011 (31 points).
AFL.com.au prediction: Richmond by 10 points

Gives off a nice handball out the back too!
No, no one gives a good handball out the back like Brad Miller. You see, Milzay doesn't bother with a u-turn and blind kick forward. He is smarter than that. He gives a nice handball out the back and then puts on a good block. People don't realise this. All about the team is Milzy. Doesn't do the flashy things, he prefers to give and block. Unselfish :bow
:thumbsup ;D

Raines ready for Tigers
By Michael Whiting
4:39 PM Fri 03 Aug, 2012
HE'S played the old team twice already, but Andrew Raines still gets a kick out of taking on Richmond.
Raines is in his third season at the Brisbane Lions after heading home to Queensland from the Tigers at the end of 2009.
When the teams square off at the Gabba on Saturday night, the 26-year-old tagger will have one of the most influential roles in the contest.
Whether it's Trent Cotchin or Dustin Martin, Raines will be assigned the shutdown role on one of the Tigers' prime movers.
He was playing coy ahead of the Lions' final training session at the Gabba on Friday afternoon, but said he didn't mind which Tiger he ended up manning.
Raines played two injury-riddled seasons alongside Cotchin in 2008 and 2009, but left the club prior to Martin's arrival.
"It's always good to play against your old mates but they're not mates when you go to battle," Raines said.
"I'm doing a fair bit of research on their midfield, they've got a quality midfield these days.
"They're (Cotchin and Martin) genuine stars of the AFL. They've got some quality players and if they're up and about it definitely goes a long way to their success in winning.
"That's my job. I've got to play on the best each week. Each week is a quality A-Grade midfielder and that's the attitude I've got to have."
After making his debut for Richmond in 2004, Raines shot to prominence with a brilliant 2006 season that netted the running half-back second in the club's best and fairest and second in the NAB Rising Star award.
However, injuries limited him to just five games across 2008-2009 before he came to the Lions.
Since heading north, Raines has not had a win against the Tigers, and had to watch from the grandstand in round 13 last year as Cotchin and Martin cut the Lions to ribbons.
Cotchin had a telling 30 disposals, including a classy left foot snapped goal, while Martin split the game wide open with four of his five goals coming in the second half.
Raines is expecting the under-siege Tigers to bring their best to Brisbane.
"There's been a fair bit of speculation in Melbourne about them. They're an exciting team and they'll come up here with a fair bit of confidence winning the last couple of times against us and (it) is something they'll be looking forward to," he said.
"We haven't been playing our best football over the past couple of weeks but I'm sure we'll bounce back on our home turf and it's an important game for us."

So who will play on Jack now.
Certainly not Harwood, too small.

Jack would be spewing. Surely they just chuck Merrett on him so Riewoldt is too scared to go near it?

At training think it's almost over as some of them already signing autographs
Matt Dea up here as emergency
Nice to see them doing some goal kicking practice. Also good to see them doing alot of long kicking forward. Let's see if that happens tomorrow night
Poor form from ground staff though wouldn't open the gates until 7.10 exactly
And the centre square is covered so they been training around it.

Lids advantage to Titch who goes long to Jack but it's rushed through.
Poor Brissy kick and it's Dusty's free. To King who finds Conca. Reece finds Jack who marks well. 50m kick for a point.

We're still bombing it too much into the forward line. Need to learn to hit lead-up options higher up to spread the Brisbane defence.
Dumb dumb Tiges. Punch the bloody ball through on the goal-line you dills :scream. Goal to J.Brown.

Our decision-making is keeping Brisbane in it. Twice as many inside 50s but only 7 pts up. It's those dumb kicks that go to the opposition that we need to cut out of our game. And there's another one by Grigg and then Post.
That was a mark to Jack not paid ::)

Lids is piffing them massively long tonight.

Bottom 6 players letting us down. Whitey fumbles when we would've been away.

McGuane then fumbles.

Our team defence has been too loose tonight. Brisbane with 13 scoring shots from just 19 inside 50s. They are scoring nearly everytime they go forward. Not good enough from us. Our small/half-forwards have been useless both offensively as well as defensively failing to keep the ball inside 50 forward line.
Best for us so have Lids, Dusty, Ivan, Grigg, Conca. McGuane has done his job kicking 3 goals.
Let's see our mentality this quarter. A killer instinct should see us come out and kick the first 2-3 goals to break the game open.

We're still too reliant on our elite players at the top end of our list to regain control of the game and get us across the line. As we all have argued, the depth isn't there. It's why we have these patches in games where we go to sleep, get smashed in the clearances and the opposition quickly kick a bag of goals. We need others to step up and share the responsibility next year for us to become a genuine contender for the finals. We were fortunate tonight Brisbane weren't in our class and coughed up goals themselves. That first goal to Nahas in the last was the circuit-breaker we needed to stop Brisbane's charge and regain control of the match to kick away again.
Anyway a 8 goal win interstate is a good win. We must one of the best records at the 'Gabba of any visiting side.

He carves us to pieces every time we play the Lions.
just maybe vossy is trying some kids and has put development in front all else after all finals is out of the question for them.
again we are very very reliant on our top end the bottom end was deplorable again.
alex rance is gioing backwards at a rate of knots. king nahas yes he kicked 4 goals white jackson mcguane are so far of the pace its not funny. houli continues to shirk and panic under pressure and newman was very quite again.
the side is screaming out for a power forward ,quality small forward ,big defender, mid field depth and a competetive second ruck forward what would happen with no maric i shudder to think..
a 48 point win does not paper over these facts. long long way to go.

Of your list:
Cloke - Power forward
Kennedy - small forward/mid rotaton
Chaplin - big defender
2 more picks for more midfield depth plus Foley and fit Helbig.
Vickery - 2nd ruck.
-
We still have the Tyronesaurus to come in next year with
Grimes
Foley
A fitter and stronger Griffo and Elton
Plus a couple of good picks you never things could get better for us

Maybe, but wouldn't it make sense to play a legend and on-field leader like Black to help the kids. He brings people into the game and may have had the Lions closer coming into the last quarter.
-
We definitely need another power forward, not sure why but a few times last night we went to King who was double teamed.... :huh
-
Good to get the win that's all and improve in areas and answer the challenge in the last quarter.Let's not forget Lions a weak and very poor side.

Nothing wrong with Nahas, Rance and Houli you drama queen. That was Houlis best game for the season and have noticed his intensity is rising. Rance has had a great year overall, yeah has had 4-5 average to poor games, but at 21 that will happen occassionally?? ::) Nahas? lol everytime he kicks a bag you chime in with "yeah but hes still a limited hack"
-
I worry that the like of Jackson and mcgaune who had decent games will be viewer better than what they are :-\
-
with Grimes out ,Rance is getting swamped .Both griff and post arent really helping .they are more worried about not getting beaten by their own man rather than providing cover for rance or any of the other defenders

some people look but just dont see. houli will never ever win you a game of footy the fear of contact continues with him. he skis down hill with the best of them its when he has to go uphill he struggles. hes barely a passable footballer.
lol nahas once again totally unsighted but pops up with 3 or was it 4 goals that were mainly gimmes. the lack of polish one sidedness and non involvement for huge chunks of games continues.
rance quite simply has been over rated by just about every man and his dog. decision making lousy positioning and inept attempts in the air have been a regular feature all yr. not to mention the regular falling over. we are chasing a kpd for a reason bud.
you rate them how you like me i will just continue to be honest and do the same.i suggest you take the blinkers off and actually look.

Just glad to win. Not getting carried away. Brisbane are a poor side and these are the games we should win. White played okay. Brett was fantastic as was Maric and Tuck. Conca also very good.

If you dont play Rance at FB who would you play back there Claw? Second if you could swap him for another 21 yo full back at any other club in the country who would that be?
-
Exactly Flagman sometimes I feel we are too harsh on Rance given the stocks we have in our backline atm. KId has been punching above his weight for a while.
-
We definitely need another power forward, not sure why but a few times last night we went to King who was double teamed.... :huh
Part of the problem was McGuane would lead to the same area as Jack or would lead up but then not double back quickly enough.
Was a solid win, nothing grand but was good to see them not fall in a heap when challenged in the final qtr.
It was pretty clear which players were given rockets during the week regarding their attack (or recent lack of attack) on the footy and the contest ;D
Likes:
Conca's game - still made some bad kicking errors but the decision making side of things was a lot better.
Houli & Grigg's attack on the footy - see above comment ;D
Rance out of his weight division again but struth he keeps on fighting
Big Ivan - sensational. Ditto Lids
Helbig - beefed up across the shoulders good to see
White - played his role very well
Dislikes:
Newman - seriously what to do? Seems to be really struggling with the pace of the game. Knows what he wants to do but geez he just looks so slow
Gut running- much improved this week but we really do seem to leave it too few, too often IMO

there is no other option but play rance at fb. that is the problem, this comes back to craig cameron and list management who has had 5 yrs to cover this position. grimes has all the right traits to play as a fb but hes going to be asked to play way out of his weight division if we throw him back there.
we wont get a 21 yr old kpp from another club the option is to target an older one and actually draft some kids who have all the right attributes to play fb. rance can then move up the ground to chb where his attributes are put to better use.
chaplin if we get him is a stepin the right direction tom lee would be another option a promising big kid in the nd is another. if possible id do all three.
chaplin lee, rance, grimes, griffiths , nd pick post and maybe someone like darrou the rookie gives us something to work with and develop. it also gives us a little bit of depth in the area.
thing is what area do you target we need to do something similar up forward we need to find a young ruckman and we need more mids theres lots of areas need a lot of work.

lol yeah lol
take the blinkers off, do you hear yourself? speaking like the messiah telling us we are massively over rating a 21 yo KPD :lol
As for nahas, you keep calling him a spud chief, hes no Rioli or Milne but results speak for themselves, he's a proven performer in the toughest position on the ground. Houli, jury is out but I'll back him in until we find better. His best is good enough, up to him if he finds a consistent level of intensity.
This is real life, not championship manager on PC. You will never, i repeat never have 22 + 12 perfect robots, Even Geelong one of the greatest sides we've seen has some players that would be very very ordinary in our lineup.
For someone who talks themselves up, you certainly are very naive when it comes to this.
-
Well I for one enjoyed the game although that 4 goal spurt by Brisbane in the last quarter was a bit of a worry. I thought Rance did a good job but like someone said, he's missing Grimes helping him out. We were near the interchange bench and at one stage in the last quarter, Richmond were trying their hardest but kept fumbling in front of goal. Dustin Martin was on the sidelines and literally was pulling his hair out (as we all were).
-
Nahas has kicked 30 goals this year. 73 tackles. Can't really complain about that for a small forward. He does his job. Rance. You can question his skills and decision making. But then you need to acknowledge that he doesn't get much support. The decisions therefore are much more difficult and the skill required to execute them up another notch again. He still manages to beat his opponent most weeks. Thats good enough for a full back. Mcguane kicked his goals when our forward line wasn't firing. Set the win up. Lets not forget how many handballs he made that resulted in goals. For a big guy, he is very good at ground level, competes well in the air and has 22 tackles already this season. Regardless of where your list is at, if you have 22 players tackling and competing like these players do, you will win more games than you lose.
Grigg was heading towards the "elite category" earlier in the season. Kicking superb goals, elite running, elite skills. Did Hardwick swap Grigg and Ellis around, give Grigg a tagging or defensive role? Is it just coincidence that when Ellis started to get more of the footy, Grigg stopped finding the footy? Ellis played a defensive game on the weekend and Grigg was back to his earlier form. Our ball movement was much better as a result. A coach can kill a club with these kind of decisions. Houli is good without being great most weeks. I can't see an issue with that.
The highlight of the night of course was Michael Voss. He is one of the few coaches that Hardwick can beat on match day. Did he tank? Black as a Sub. Makes you wonder.

WTF Grigg heading towards elite, the only thing he does elite is hanging by himself and being unaccountable

Can't work out when you're being serious Chuck. Do you rate Grigg or not?

He still leads but only by 1 to Watson.

all l can say is they finally won a game for the supporters :clapping
-
Grigg. 3rd in disposals. 2nd in marks, 14 goals. 77% disposal efficiency.
30 possessions and 2 goals in the loss to Essendon earlier in the year. Is that a downhill skier? Our best ball users are Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Houli and Grigg. It drops away a fair bit after that.
------
Of Grigg’s 27.8 disposals per game this season, however, he runs at 79 per cent efficiency, a higher rating than his much publicised teammates Deledio (75 per cent), Martin (67) and Cotchin (65).
He also averages three clearances per game and manages to hit the scoreboard when he runs out onto the field, kicking on goal per match. His numbers so far prove that he is one of the unsung heroes of the Tigers line up, that the Hawks will need to be aware of on Saturday afternoon.

How is his tackle count compared to the other mids. His disposal is only good because he is out on his own most of the time, he is not a good kick.
How can you compare his disposal to our other mids who actually win contested ball, you are doing them a major dis-service putting Grigg in their category.
No 1 in unaccountability and runs off the efforts of our other mids such as Cotch, Foley and Dusty.
Average player for mind that we can do a lot better on, IMO Grigg and Houli are just fill ins until we develop our own.

Most of the time just bombs it long aswell, which goes down as effective
