3 million bucks over 3 years for Jonathon Brown!
http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/realfooty/articles/2005/05/02/1114886312591.html
Ever heard of the salary cap Eddie ::). I guess Bucks can tell Brown about what a great career move it was to leave Brisbane and come to Collingwood and show him all the premierships he's wo... oh that's right he hasn't :rollin
-
He won't leave Brissie I wouldn't think. They'd get rid of others before they'd let him go to fit him in their salary cap. poo for brains if they didn't.
I don't like one man teams, although i wouldn't knock him back if he wanted to come to us. He gets injured, he's a very expensive casualty. Don't blame the Pies for having a go - type of stuff we used to do in the old days when we had money and GR in charge of recruiting. But that was pre salary cap. Not much chop if you've got one big King Kong and the rest are monkeys because that's all you can afford. I like the way we're doing it at the moment - just recruit the best drafts and build a well-balanced team.
I actually hope Collingwood do something stupid like that - always backfires in the long run IMO.
-
LMAO@ Wanting a set of clokes - good one :thumbsup
Brown is the new Plugger and would be welcome at Tigerland
-
Would a set of clokes, barely used, complete with mother and father, be a fair swap for a Brown??? lol matbe throw in a setof steak knives :-\
-
Another failed attempt by the Pies to attract a high profile player - Gehrig, Nick Stevens, Nathan Brown :thumbsup and now Jonothan Brown. What a shame :lol
-
Ah well, at least they got Woewodin and Caracella :rollin
-
Ah well, at least they got Woewodin and Caracella :rollin
And we thought our recruiting was bad :lol :lol :lol
-
Geees I love how poo they are.
MAkes me feel UNREEEEAAAALLLLLL !! :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup
-
They must reckon everyone has a price, but obviously money doesn’t buy everyone, or everything. And it’s good to see Brown knock any speculation on the head right away, without it turning into another ‘will he, won’t he’ saga.
Fair enough that Clubs try these things, but how much pressure do they put players under if they accept these mega deals? It's totally irresponsible by Clubs, because they couldn't possibly have the interests of the player at heart. How much added pressure and flak did Gaspar have to deal with after his last contract?
Who knows whether Collingwood knew they weren’t going to get Brown, and just tried to get Brisbane to pay more than they had to for him, but it makes it look as though people are trying to cover their own backsides when they’re under pressure and not winning games. Get real.
-
So true TS.
Eddie is the best thing for Collingwood off-field in terms of generating money for the Pies and sponsors but he is the worst thing for them on-field as he has the same mentality as the average Pie supporter who thinks it's 1930 and they are still the greatest club ever and the world revolves around them ::). It doesn't matter which club it is but while Club administrators and staff think their club is far better than it actually is they have got buckley's chance lol of winning a flag. So keep up the good work Eddie and Mick so you're remain one less side we have to worry about in the future. 1 flag in 45 years says it all :thumbsup.
Ah well, at least they got Woewodin and Caracella :rollin
:lol
Not forgetting former Eagles Andrew Williams and Chad Morrison. Malthouse playing favourites again.
And although he wasn't recruited from another club Rhyce Shaw is always good for a laugh when he gets the footy :rollin.
-
People people people. I think we might be overestimating the moral fabric of Eddie and co. and underestimating their cunning. Do you not think that they were trying to push Brisbane's offer into a position that would squeeze the room in their cap? I think they full realise they havent a hope in hell of getting Dal Santo either and are doing the same thing.

It also goes against them in these big players they chase - clubs don't want to deal with them for this very reason. Probably the reason we got Brown instead of them. I wouldn't deal with them with the perception Eddie creates that Collingwood is the greatest club and the rest are scum. The way they deal is actually doing them harm on the trading scene. Maybe they should change tack and start building their list like most other clubs seem to be doing with young kids. But i'm more than happy for them to go this way and they achieve mediocrity forever ;D

Never let reason get in the way of an opportunity to bash Collingwood.
lmfaooo@Rhyce Shaw MT.

Pies got pumped by 18 goals! :rollin
Eddie skip dreaming of paying $$$ for only one star player. You need to buy a whole new football team lol.

Saw this posted on BF. Mr "game over" is jumping off the bandwagon because the Pies are crap :rollin.

Looks like the Pies and poor Eddie are finally going to lose all those lucrative Friday night games. Enter the Tigers you would think based on current form :thumbsup.

Friday lights dim for Pies
15 May 2005
Herald Sun
Jon Ralph
COLLINGWOOD faces the prospect of a dramatic cut in the weekend's most desired fixture slot – Friday night football – if it cannot turn around its lacklustre season.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said Collingwood was like any other team in that if it performed poorly it might be shunned by broadcasters in prime-time spots.
Demetriou told 3AW that Collingwood was likely to have its Friday night fixtures reduced if it continued to struggle as it did in 2004.
"Absolutely. You would definitely see less Friday nights (involving Collingwood) based on form ," he said.
"That has been borne out of the way we have done the Friday night fixture in that teams that have performed poorly don't get to play as much on Friday night as the following years.
"Teams perform well earn the right to play more on Friday night the following year."

Now, if we can get Demetriou to start to schedule more MCG games as well as Friday night games for us, i'll be a happy girl.
Wondering if they'll stop giving the Pies other benefits too, like reserved seating for their members at "away" games.
Be nice if we got some of those new social sections of the G as well, so our social club members (who get really nothing in return for their membership) somewhere to go to.
A successful Richmond = a successful AFL. God i hope it comes this year lol
-

This isn't going to happen - we will play (as will the other MCG co-tennants) a minimum of 3 home games a year. We have an arrangement with Telstra to play 4 games a year for a guaranteed figure. Under the AFL arrangement of 3 games there is no under written amount.

This is not an AFL arrangement - the new Social Club arrangement the Pies have is with the MCC not the AFL. The MCC negoiated with the Pies only. When the Pies are not playing at the MCG the home team have access to the facilities.
As for reserved seats for away games - that is up to each individual club

How do the Hawks only have 1 home game at the Dome ??? but 8 at the 'G. Do they somehow get out of the 3 game Dome minimum by playing 2 games in Tassie? ???

Yes it is partly because of the ir Tassie arrangment and also because of the deal with the AFL when they moved from Waverley. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2006

Good to see the Pies made the tough decisions after their "review" :lol
COLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire promised a "full reconstruction" of his underperforming football department as recently as six weeks ago. But with the AFL's most eagerly anticipated review now complete, not one Magpies official has lost their job in the post-season examination.
But once the football department was turned inside and out, all staff invited to reapply for their own jobs, a high-profile list of new applicants interviewed and Swann given greater sway over football matters, there was no great revelation as to why Collingwood could not field a competitive team.
"Injuries were a massive factor," Swann said. "The rest is fine-tuning."

-
I nearly fell off my chair this morning when I read that the Pies spent $12 million bucks on thier footy department - highest in the league. They also (after this review) have the most assistant coaches - 6. Why
Clearly more money than sense................you can spend a fortune .... but if you have list of over rated duds and young players that never seem to improve - nothing will make you competitive
But good on them for giving us all a good laugh :lol
-
In fitting with this thread, isn't it hilarious that the Pies and Bombers have fallen to such depths that they're now fighting over a 30-year old like Camporeale. How sad ;D.
I can't see Micky lasting must longer at the Pies at this rate.
-
From the Age:
Malthouse said he would be "bitterly disappointed" if the Magpies did not make the finals next season.
Prepare to be bitterly disappointed Mickey :rollin
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has told Collingwood officials that the Magpies will not be required to wear an alternate strip in 2006, Magpies president Eddie McGuire told Collingwood's annual meeting last night.
McGuire said the AFL had conceded that the Magpies' traditional black-and-white strip and the similar heritage strip could be used in various combinations with black or white shorts to ensure an alternate strip was not required.
Their current jumper isn't traditional ::). The heritage/mainly white one is!
As long as the Pies wear their old white guernsey with black stripes and white shorts then there won't be any confusion. And when we are the away side the same thing should apply. Why should we be made to wear something different when there never was a jumper clash until the Pies changed their jumper to a mainly black one to appease their sponsors.

Yeah, Malthouse is on some powerful drugs if he reckons Collingwood can make the 8 next year
-
Poor Bucks reckons the Pies are a serious chance for the flag :rollin
The 33-year-old says the sky is the limit for Collingwood this year, if the entire squad commits itself, and a premiership in his time is achievable.
That will only happen, Buckley says, if the club focuses only on seizing its chance this year and not worrying about what could or has gone wrong.

It got a mention but nothing like the sensationalism we copped ::). All that was said was the Pies want to fine Morrison $20,000 instead of the "maximum" $5,000 that's set out in the AFL players' enterprise bargaining agreement. Unless I missed it I didn't hear them mention what's going to happen with the Pies' TAC sponsorship ???.
-
Geez I'd laugh if the Pies miss the finals. 3 losses from their past 4 :thumbsup.
-
i cant wait to hear the talk back in the morning.
After last week, Collingwood supporters will be jumping off in their thousands tomorrow morning ;D
Could be a few hit and runs, as people fall off the bandwagon.
If i hit a Collingwood supporter i wouldnt stop :o

Saw this article on BF. Serves the Pies right for selling out their traditional home :rollin.
Pies out in the cold
Lyndal Cairns
The Leader
12Jul06
COLLINGWOOD Football Club has accused Yarra Council of shutting it out of its spiritual home of 114 years.
The Magpies want to return to train at Victoria Park - and are willing to pay $200 an hour - but the council are refusing the club's request to share it with the AFL Umpires Association and the Fitzroy Reds.
Magpies chief operating officer Eugene Arocca said Yarra should spend the money required to fix Victoria Park's surface so it would cope with a more rigorous schedule.
``We've been told we can't train on the oval because of its condition,'' he said. ``If the oval's not up to it, it needs to be upgraded.''
Mr Arocca said the club hoped to train there once a week.
The Pies are looking for new training pastures because its current ground, Edwin Flack Field in the Olympic Park precinct renamed Bob Rose Oval is set to become a 20,000-seat rugby and soccer stadium.
Yarra Mayor Jackie Fristacky said Collingwood had no special rights because it was based outside the municipality, at the Lexus Centre.
``They have withdrawn from Collingwood and we had a settlement,'' she said. ``I can't imagine we'd give Collingwood Football Club preferential treatment over the Fitzroy Reds that are based here.'' :rollin
Collingwood is also at loggerheads with Melbourne Council over the club's plan to install advertising at Gosch's Paddock, in the Olympic Park precinct.
A council report seen by the Leader opposes a proposal to surround the oval set to become the club's permanent training site with 1m-high signs, a decision ultimately for the State Government.
Planning committee chairman Cr Fraser Brindley said it would destroy the open look of the ground and commercialise a public park.
``It is completely against the feel of the paddock as it is,'' he said. ``It is a sign of Collingwood's arrogance.''
Greens upper house candidate Greg Barber warned it was the first step in a plan to ``lock up'' green space.
``Anyone who thinks those areas are public open space for the future will be in for a rude shock,'' he said.
-
Good on Yarra City Council lol :thumbsup
Wonder if that will be reported on the Footy Show tonight :rollin

He (Malthouse) is adamant that the Pies will not only play finals, but win them in 2007.

I believe Peter Schwab said pretty much the same thing about the Hawks when he was coaching them.
I think they came last
Hopefully a bit of deja vu :pray
-
That was 2004 they came 2nd last we came last.
-
Listening to the run home on SEN Mark Robbertson tipped the pies for the spoon. Lucky for me it was early on in my 60 minute trip to work and had a great laugh at all the delusional skunk supporters going feral and predicting top 4 or 8 minimum. :rollin
Hmmmmm Wonder what odds they are for the spoon, might make a decent bet.
-
Its laughable isn't it. Two years ago in 2005 after we beat the Pies in round 8 thanks to
Browny's fabulous five goal last quarter the Pies were 1 win 7 losses.
What I found staggering were the Pies were $12 for the flag and the spoon.
Collingwood fans are not only dreamers but they are absolutely stupid to boot.
Of course as Tiger fans we all knew that. ;D
I was wondering how the majority of their fans could actually afford to make bets like that
and actually think they have a chance at winning. ;D
-
Just 1 flag in almost 50 years and they still convince themselves they are the greatest club in Oz :sleep :chuck.
We've owned the Pies since the 1991 Mothers' Day massacre. Something like 15 wins to 7. We want to play them twice a year not for the gate receipts but for the 8 points. I wish we could play them 22 times a year ;D.
-
How about all this sooking over the rule changes from Malthouse, Clement and Buckley. They must know their in trouble!
Presti and Clement will struggle with this rule.
-
Was watching FoxSportsNews this morning and Malthouse was being interviewed about the Syd v Coll practice match tonight.
(I'll have to paraphrase what he said). He was getting excited about some young talent that will be playing, said that you can think you've got a real prospect pre-season but to gauge properly you need them take off the skirt and put shorts on for the match. ;D
His young recruits would be rapt to hear this, another strange analogy from Mick. A big year coming up for the pies, skirts and all. :lol
-
I was wondering how the majority of their fans could actually afford to make bets like that
They get their dole and head straight down the the TAB ;D

I think this link sums up this deluded thread :lol.

Warning: make sure you have a bucket with you when reading it :chuck.

ahahahahaha lol.
Collingwood fans are constantly being taken for a ride by their board. By giving them something half hearted and superficial to believe in they come in droves and come September the only certainty is another Collingwood Failure but due to the fact Carlton have fallen on hard times the fact that they beat them more than compensates for September deficiencies. Collingwood board has been making money of the typical Collingwood demographic for years. Unintelligent, Uneducated, Superficial, Uncouth, Unemployable, Unholy, Insignificant , Incomprehensive. Oh well small things for small minds lol.
Obviously Joffa is missing a chromosome but so are about another 35,000 Collingwood members.
For a poor Victorian club like us Joffa Richmond have had the wood over the Pies for the last 15 or so years. Or is Essendon not pulling its weight when it comes to Anzac Day? Or don't you remember when Carlton would beat the Pies 9 times out of 10 not so long ago. Is there a more mediocre club in the Southern Hemisphere than the Collingwood Football Club? I doubt it.
Despite our lack of success in the last 25 years we are still 5 times the side Collingwood are having won 5 flags to 1 since 1958 and I am sure most forumites here old enough fondly remember the record hiding that was dished out on that last Saturday in September.
Mighty Tiges I did not need a bucket after all as normal humans with a full set of chromosomes and a normal demeanour we have been desensiticed to this sort of drivel from those morons for years.
-
If it wasn't for Collingwood there would be NO AFL!!
FFS, they don't own the AFL! ::)
I'm really frustrated at how stupid they are :banghead
Stupid people annoy me :yep :stupid

Here's a new slant on an old joke (I prefer this version better)
Mick Malthouse goes to a football reunion at Richmond and starts
chatting with Terry Wallace. Terry says to Mick, "Well Mick, I don't
know what you think of your players at Collingwood, but mine here are
all bright and brilliant." "How do you know?" asks Mick. "Oh well, it's
simple", says Terry. "We put them through a special intelligence test
before they can play here. Just pick any of my players and we will see
how well he does. "Mick thinks for a while and then nominates Matthew
Richardson. Terry calls him over and asks him,
"Tell me Matty, who is the child of your father and of your mother who
is not your brother and is not your sister?"
"Ah, that's simple plow," says Matthew, "it's me".
"Well done Matty", says Terry, and Mick is very impressed.
Mick returns to Collingwood and wonders about the intelligence of the
team. He calls in Buckley and asks," Nathan, tell me, who is the child
of your father and of your mother who is not your brother and is not
your sister?" Nathan thinks and thinks and doesn't know the answer.
"Can I think about it a bit more Mick, and I'll give you an answer
tomorrow?"
"Of course," says Mick, "you've got 24 hours. But it is very important
that you come up with the answer."
Nathan goes away, thinks as hard as he can, and then he calls in his
team-mates. Rocca thought it might be his Grandpa but wasn't sure.
Tarrant was certain that it couldn't be anyone. McKee admitted he was
sacked from Richmond for not knowing. Cloke also owned up to failing the
test while trying to get a position at Punt Rd. Prestigiacomo thought it
could be a cousin in Italy who had been adopted as a child.
The rest of the team wouldn't even hazard a guess. Licuria went into the
foetal position. 20 hours later, Nathan is very worried that he still
has no answer with only 4 hours to go. Eventually Nathan says
"I know, I'll ring James Hird! He's clever, he'll know the answer."
He calls James. "Hirdy," he says, "tell me, who is the child of your
father and of your mother who is not you brother and is not your
sister?" " Very simple," says James, "it's me!"
"Of course!" says Nathan and immediately rings Mick.
"Mick," says Nathan, " I've got the answer: it's James Hird."
"No, you idiot," says Mick. "It's Matthew Richardson."

I try to turn it into a positive. While the Pies think like that then they are one less team for us to worry about as they are no flag threat. I was tempted to log on and post "On behalf of the Tigers I would like to thank the CFC for the 4 points each year" ;D

While Richmond are 11/1 for the spoon Skunks are 21/1.
I couldn't resist and had a bit on those odds, and really if you have a good think about it they might just go damn close.
What could be better than the skunks getting the spoon and collecting a bit of dosh at the same time. 8)
NB: I forced myself onto that link :chuck we owe the skunks our existence does that f witt really believe that.
I have seen the idiot around a few times and have put myself above saying anything, but I think next time I run into him he may be copping a few choice words.
If he tries to argue it may have to be settled the old fashioned way.
-
Yeah they were pretty shocking last night :thumbsup
Let's hope that it's a sign of the future of the Collingwood Football Club :pray
-
Collingwood have been shocking for years. That's been their past their present and their future :thumbsup
CUB as for your bet on the "skunks" I prefer to call them "scums". Good luck on it. After watching the Bombers tonight what would be the odds on a Bomber Magpie bottom 2 quinella?
-
Seems Lexus wonderland isn't as crash hot as what a certain Prez makes it out to be. Not happy Pie campers. Makes your heart bleed ... not! lol
Also we train on Gosch's paddock :-\.
Nothing to do with games. Everything to do with club culture and the legacy of generations past. We play at the MCG, we train and operate the club in no mans land.
None of you can not seriously look us in the eye and say you are happy with the members facilities at Lexus Centre?
[Vic Park's] disgusting surface holds the remains of hundreds of Collingwood's most faithful followers. Harry Collier had his funeral service on the wing that Darren Millane made his own. Does this mean nothing? Is it not our duty to fight to retain this heritage?
More to the point I will directly attribute the tightness in Nathan Buckley's hamstring to the immature surface at Gosch's Paddock. The grass had not had sufficient time to knit and is very loose under foot. I have asked several players about this and without naming names their is a general concern for their own wellbeing. So the question is what the hell is the point of all this? We are a football club with footballers that are supposed to be winning football matches.
Only the best will do....pfffft.
and ....
Will the Hisstory books properly read that a one time Collingwood President could not wait to leave Victoria Park, a great home to the Club for over one hundred years, having survived two world wars and a great depression, he let this grand old lady go, for some shared corporate facility, and a so called off field home where tenure is uncertain and soccer reigns surpreme? Will the same history read that this was the beginning of the end for the truly great days of football passion and fun, where a sense of belonging and history mean't everything to generations? Did we live for the club colours, the history, the traditions, our castle and home, Victoria Park?
How can this be today, where we train on a thing called a paddock? How can this be where idiots and fools say we had to change? For what? Why? I hear, get with the times? Are we happier today than what we all were at VP? Or are we the victims of a big con which says that we are better now with nowhere to watch our lads train like we had before and all the superficial spin that comes with narrow corporate vision where we are mere porns? I raise these questions for your considered views.

They better get Mr Bean back into that Pies jumper as Bucks has done his hammy (the other one). Out for 3-4 weeks and it could end up 6.
We play them in round 3 too.
-
The Pies have lost Greg Swann to the Blues. Eddie isn't pleased lol.

The Pies are still trying to avoid the little travelling they do now the poor little darlings ::).
McGuire: Carrara away game push
Damian Barrett | March 26, 2008
Under McGuire's suggestion, Collingwood would play up to six away matches at Carrara - mostly against non-Victorian clubs - each year until the new team is introduced.
McGuire said Collingwood could play only away matches at Carrara, and not home games, because of a complicated contract with the MCG.

Totally ridiculous "We cant have any as home games but we'd love to play as an away team against WCE, Freo, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Port so they're further sloped towards us with fans and no hostile home ground advantage or trips to WA." ::)
Good try Eddie but I dont think they'll buy it. :whistle
-
It's AFL headquarters that's deluded.
if it makes money they'll likely go for it. :banghead
-
Is Eddie expecting all interstate sides to give up revenue from their home games and home ground advantage :wallywink.
The centre of the universe comment about the Pies holding all other AFL contracts together is hilarious :lol.
-
Anyone hear Eddie on SEN just now. He sure didn't like being questioned :nope and got quite flusted and personal with Francis Leach calling him anti-Collingwood. His logic was other sides have been willing to sell their home games interstate so why can't Collingwood be the away side. Problem with Eddie's logic was his proposal demand mostly non-Vic clubs giving up home games and they have never sold theirs. Eddie also played dumb to the question as to why everyone else has to make "sacrifices for the betterment of the game" and not Collingwood.
-
They win a couple of meaningless NAB Cup games and now the Pies think the flag is theirs for the taking :rollin

Oh yes typical trash talk.
Hawthorn won the flag and have the most members of any Victorian club so winning the pre season cup and arrogantly proclaiming flags and equating this to similarities of 1990 is one way to get the ferals going and hyped up that hides.
Hawthorn has more members than the Pies fact
Collingwood has won 1 flag in 51 years.
Have not won a flag in September since 1958
Collingwood have been as successful as St Kilda in that time.
All Victorian clubs bar the Dogs have been more successful since 1958.
Furthermore Collingwood are at full strength at the moment and most other clubs aren't hence the Pies are up and about at the moment and a little bit more ahead than a number of other clubs so their theory is why not cash in on this and get the black and white army going and have all the media friendly outlets help them out with pro Collingwood articles/stories.
Typically Collingwood, it conceals their frailties in order to appeal to the uneducated masses.

Could n ot have said it better myself Tucky :clapping :thumbsup
Also this trash talk helps distract the media away from Malthouse being unsigned in the last year of his contract. If the Pies are so confident why haven't they signed up Mick?! :whistle. If the wheels fall off as they did after Schwab said the same thing at Hawthorn then it'll be goodbye Mick and Eddie.

Another failed attempt by the Pies to attract a high profile player - Gehrig, Nick Stevens, Nathan Brown :thumbsup and now Jonothan Brown. What a shame :lol
They are a joke at times aren't they? Swagger around supposing they are the the be all and end all of the game and are in fact a fairly colourless and boring team with few if any real stars.

Hawthorn have more members. That is a fact. Here's another. So do Richmond.

Interesting article by Caro on Eddie this morning basically saying he should step down as president. I hope Eddie stays. As much as the 'Collingwood is the greatest' bulldust ticks you off, Eddie personifies why the Pies have won just one flag in the past 50 years. Why change that Caro :lol.
-
Actually I think Eddie is great fun. Long may he stay making an idiot of himself.

Someone doesn't like criticism lol.....
McGuire retaliates by denying Age access
March 8, 2009
THE Sunday Age and The Age were unable to interview any Collingwood players after Friday night's NAB Cup semi-final victory, after the intervention of president Eddie McGuire.
McGuire declared the players off-limits after a column in Friday's Age questioned how long he could or should remain at the helm of the Magpies.
Age chief football writer Caroline Wilson wrote that McGuire's 11-year service was "threatening to become tainted by his obsessive behaviour in recent times and occasional rantings against anyone who has done him wrong".
