At this time of the year each year we normally discuss the future of players on the fringe. First up is Astbury.
Dave has just completed his 3rd year in the AFL system playing 24 games in total with the past 18 months being interrupted with that patella injury. Prior to the injury he was being played in defence but played forward when he made it back to play the last two games of this season.

Do we keep Dave and give him a full preseason to show what he can do next year or is he a trade option?
-
Keep. Unless he can be packaged for a gun mid.
-
ill give him the benefit of doubt having returned from big knee...he looked to have the tricks prior to going down..albeit his forst year was markedyl better than what he put up in his second...12 months and we'll know...I will say though needs to improve around 500% to get to AFL standard, he s barely VFL on what i saw in 2012 :o
-
Keep but needs a massive pre-season to set himself up to play senior footy.
Would think 2013 will be a make or break year
-
Neah
Won't make it
-
Dingles has plenty of up, needs to get some meat on dem bones.
-
Keep.
-
geez is this thread for real.
are we really talking about wanting to cut a 21yo 195cm kpp who has basically missed two of his first 3 yrs due to injury.
only needs to get games weather that is at coburg or richmond next yr showing some sort of improvement. would not be even in the gun until the end of 2014 if there was no improvement.
imo astbury should be developed as a hit up key forward.
-
Give Astbury one more year ...

Agreed.
-
Give him more time, but ill call it now, dont think he'll make it.... too slow and doubt he will ever be ahead of Rance, Grimes, Griffiths, Jack, Vickery and Chaplin(if he comes) as 1st choice KPP.... I think all of the afore mentioned are better players and better prospects long term too
As backup or 3rd tall type hes just too slow. Hope he proes me wrong bc I think hes a smart footballer just looks incredibly slow
-
Im really hoping he was just outa sorts due to the lack footy, shock horror but he reminded of the clumsy clot patto that would oft cock p everything he touched. Big dave reallyneeds to spend a summer getting the feel of ball slap on hand

No worries Herr Lip
-
keep for sure - agree he needs a big preseason but he hasn't been able to get that under his belt in the passed...showed some signs/smarts & the bigs always take awhile to develop....
and yes:
Big dave reallyneeds to spend a summer getting the feel of ball slap on hand
^ genius :)
-
One more year - but if he cops another injury early then its adios

100%..
Lets not stuff this up like we did with Schulz!!
This kid has alreday showed a bit in the last few games he played after being injured for the best part of two years and without a preseason...
I am not sure this thread is worth it either..If he has a full preseason and can't perform fine, but gee, at that height, with the skills he has and his mobility..he could be anything. Glass half full at the moment for mine!
-

Same as Cotch.... :whistle
-
Agree WAT.
I reckon Dave showed a bit in the last few games with the way he competed. Has upside, and seems to be an intelligent and committed individual, which is a big part of the equation.
-
Too young to make a call on his career.
1-2 more years of development required especially given lack of games due to injuries
-

Actually watching him play live helped, he dis a lot of work off the ball against Brissy, really freeing up Jack and creating space...
One to watch.

From where exactly WAT ;)
He didn't play against Brisbane only played the last 2 games of the season
-
I'm not saying he won't make it, but where did anyone see any positive signs from Dave this season? He was extremely poor in the games he played at AFL level, and I feel he was 'gifted' those games to give him some more experience on the big stage prior to pre season. If you honestly believe you saw some sort of positives from Dave's game, please let me know when and where so I can cover off the footage.
For mine, he needs to have a massive pre season and show us why the club decided he was worthy of the #12. He has the talent (was evident in his first year) so needs to show he hasn't lost that from being out injured the last 18 months.
-
spot on JVT

Was sure he played that game didn't he...bloody hell if he didn't I must be more mad than originaly thought. Who the hell was I watching then.... :lol

Post. Similar output based on Dave's last 2 games.
;D

Yep that would be the one, God I am losing it.
Anyway, go Astbury... :thumbsup
-
Except Post doesn't have 18 months on the sidelines as an excuse :rollin
-
Neither does Astbury. He missed 10 months. He actually only missed from round 13 last year to May of this year.

I stand corrected :cheers Still, missed a fair chunck of footy and a pre season as well.

He missed 14 months of AFL footy. ;D from round 13 last year to round 22 (August) this year. In May he started back with the VFL reserves and then progressed to VFL seniors
That's a lot of footy ;D
-
Wouldn't have missed that much AFL footy if he actually got a kick in the VFL. Didn't earn a game either but then again neither did the rest of the spuds who step in when we get injuries
-
Oh yeah nah yeah mate
-
He doesn't fill me with hope......
Looks like we might have to endure more of this......

Give him the stuff. Disgrace to the #12

Astbury -like having a spare tyre thats even flatter than the one you are trying to change.

-
Still better than Chaplin.....
-
I think he has shown a bit during the NAB games, this is how he was poised a couple of years ago before it all clicked for him and he was our best defender......then the bloody injuries :banghead
-
Last chance for him

:cheers
-
Thought he was OK against Port.
-
I can't help but think we'll play Astbury because we want him to be good when he's just not. I'd be happier with playing Chaplin back in rd 1.
-
Astbury showed good signs in the practice games I thought
-

So would Carlton....

Read an article today suggesting we're after Michael Hurley, after he sits this year out. Might be the end for Astbury (or Chaplin)...
Not the article I read today, but http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/essendon/banned-essendon-players-could-be-convinced-to-walk-out-on-club-with-rivals-circling/news-story/10d9f4f1f3855939e4cfd6c44cc1eace

Not as big as Paul Salmon was!

Astbury > Chaplin. Give him the game vs Carlton and see how he goes
-
See how Astbury goes against Carlton. Give him game time. Hopefully he will seize the chance.
-

Actual that's part of the problem we have with our borderline players. Give them a game against a lesser side and they look great. It's when they come up against top notch opposition (eg Hawks, Freo etc) that they struggle
Gauging Astbury IMO is not about how he goes against the poor side but how he goes against the really good ones. And again IMHO he struggles because he is slow in his decision making forget about slow on his feet
-
And he can't stay on the park.
We fall in love with players on this site because we see them as a replacement for the players we hate not because they are guns.
-
Unfortunately people are still seeing Richos jumper and not the player underneath

Is Hurley a big fish?
Given he would sure up the weakest area for five year
Given out list make up , yes
Rance. Drug cheat. Astbury. Grimes is solid
With options of McBean or Griffiths if super tall defenders come in fashion
-
Given Astbury has only played 24 games in the past 5 seasons - I wonder in hindsight if we should of kept Jayden Post .
He had showed more ability than Astbury in my opinion.

No, we should've kept Dea. Post didn't want it.

Agree and i didnt rate Dea that highly but he was certainly better than the "Post twins", oops sorry i meant Astbury & Post

No he wasn't.

Exactly. And in this case the devil we know (Chaplin) is better than the devil we don't (Astbury)

We have the same problem with the list blocker
Hampson grigg Morris Chaplin all look like Heros when te going is good
-
Do you think Astbury would have more of an idea if we had layed him more ....oops sorry I think he has been injured for @ 50% of his tenure?
I think we need to be playing McBean give him a good block of games not just the odd one here and there.
Look how long it took to put Miles in the team

I'm actually pretty glad now that we kept him, will line up r1 and here's hoping he has a decent crack at it , will do well I reckon :thumbsup

Thanks Dave
