Round-robin for NAB Cup
By Adam McNicol
Fri 12 Oct, 2012
THE AFL has announced that it will continue with a round-robin format for the 2013 NAB Cup, although the fixture for the pre-season competition won't be revealed until the end of October.
As in 2011 and this season, the 18 clubs will be divided into six divisions.
The competition will begin on the weekend of February 15-17, with three divisions playing their round-one games at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Patersons Stadium in Perth and AAMI Stadium in Adelaide.
The other three divisions will play their shortened matches on the weekend of February 22-24.
The venues for those games are Etihad Stadium, Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast and the Blacktown International Sports Park in western Sydney.
Rounds two and three of the NAB Cup will involve full-length matches played at a range of regional and metropolitan venues in each state and territory.
The top two teams on the competition ladder will play off in the Grand Final on the weekend of March 15-16.
The other 16 clubs will play practice matches on that weekend.
Fox Footy will exclusively broadcast a number of matches in rounds one, two and three, while the Grand Final will be broadcast live by both Fox Footy and the Seven Network.

Essendon has ruled out flying to Wangaratta after last year's disastrous attempt to avert a three-hour return bus ride.

Much happier with this years NAB draw than last years. Actually gives us a chance to get a couple of wins under our belt over the period instead of being cleaned up every year. I like the fact we start at Ethiad too. Hey - I may even make the trip to the country if I'm feeling particularly motivated :thumbsup Tassies is a bridge to far though :P

Prior to last year we got smashed in the preseason :P.
Some blame the floggings of Geelong at Kardinia Park and GWS as raising expectations too high leading into playing Carlton in round 1 which of course we lost.

Interchange cap set at 20
By Peter Ryan
afl.com.au
Saturday, February 2, 2013
Clubs will be allowed 20 interchanges per quarter in the later stages of the NAB Cup
AFL CLUBS have been informed of the capped interchange rules to be trialled in rounds two, three, and the Grand Final of the NAB Cup this season, with a limit of 20 interchanges per quarter allowed under the system.
Under the NAB Cup rules in those rounds, the interchanges at quarter-time, half-time and three-quarter time will not be included in the cap.
Interchanges remaining in the cap from the previous quarter will not roll-over into the next quarter.
In round one of the series however clubs will be able to have six players on the interchange and rotations will be unlimited.
The NAB Cup trial of capped interchanges follows the AFL Commission decision in October to defer any change to the current three interchange, one substitute system that has been in place since 2011.
At that meeting the AFL Commission agreed in principle to an interchange cap – where the number of interchanges per quarter is limited – but wanted further analysis and data collection to take place before accepting a recommendation for change.
It is understood the method to be used to record the number of interchanges and inform clubs of the count during each quarter is still being bedded down but will be in place once the series begins.
Adelaide midfield coach Scott Camporeale told AFL.com.au he welcomed the trial but admitted the defending NAB Cup premiers had not spent much time in the pre-season considering how it would manage with limited rotations in those games.
"It will be interesting and will give us a bit of a heads up as to what it might look like if they do bring it in permanently, but the biggest thing [in the NAB Cup] will be monitoring minutes and the players' workload in each area," Camporeale said.
Port Adelaide's director of coaching Alan Richardson said while the teams lost a little flexibility because of the cap he was all for such trials in the NAB Cup.
Richardson said clubs would use the system in a productive manner anyway.
"Strategically we're pretty keen for guys to be able to play multiple positions anyway," Richardson said. "The obvious thing that will happen is that instead of rotating [off the ground] guys will go forward or back."
The capped system to be used in the NAB Cup series also contains a provision for a medical assessment to be made without an interchange being recorded.
When a club official advises an AFL interchange official that a player has left the ground for a medical assessment, no interchange will be recorded but the player being assessed will be off the ground for 15 minutes of playing time.
The replacement player in that instance will be one of the three interchange players rather than the substitute player.
The provision was considered sufficient to allow doctors time to assess players suspected of concussion and trial some of the practical implications of the decision-making process in those instances.
The suggestion made in 2012 that an injury substitute be introduced remains on the agenda with the AFL Medical Officers Association resolving at their November meeting to submit to the AFL a proposal as to how an injury sub or concussion sub might work if it was introduced in 2014.
The association is most interested in exploring what options are available if the three interchange and one substitute system remains unchanged beyond 2013. Introducing a 'concussion sub' is considered easier to implement in practical terms at this stage under a capped system.
They have already begun considering the question with AFL Football Operations.
"It's probably less urgent as an issue if they [the AFL Commission] put a cap on interchanges but if the current system remains in place then we will be exploring the idea of being able to still use [a concussion sub]," Dr Hugh Seward said.
And if it's a tie in the NAB Cup Grand Final, and two five- minute periods of extra time is played?
Each team will be able to make a maximum of five interchanges for each period.

Early Tiger time
Richmond, North firm for pre-season title
By Nick Quinn
Herald-Sun
Friday 15 Feb 2013, Page 72
RICHMOND has been the biggest firmer in NAB Cup betting as punters bank on the Tigers ending a long premiership drought.
"After opening at $51, the Tigers are now into $15 and are our worst result,'' TAB's Matt Jenkins said.
Richmond begins its pre-season campaign next weekend and is grouped with Melbourne and North Melbourne.
"North has also firmed to win the NAB Cup, backed from $34 into $11, including a bet of $1000 at $31, so punters are ruling a line through Melbourne,'' Jenkins said.
Hawthorn is $3.25 to win the pre-season competition.
Adelaide has firmed from $15 into $13 to defend its title.

hows goddard going?
First disposal was a turnover. About a third of his disposals have been to the bulldogs or his teammates disadvantage.
Bulldogs have a full strength side named and look woeful.
-
I don't think anyone is not expecting the Dogs to finish in the bottom 4.
-
I don't think anyone is not expecting the Dogs to finish in the bottom 4.
McCartney came out at the start and said they were going to go hard, hence the squad they named. Granted some of the blokes were playing out of position, they couldn't hit a target, continuously kicked it to bombers players when kicking in or entering 50, and struggled at any kind of clean possession. Says something when Brett Goodes was their best kick for two halves. Against an average manned Essendon side it just shows that Bulldogs might challenge the spoon. Will be interesting how they go against Collingwood now.
-
Let us know how they fare :thumbsup
-
Doggies hitting more targets with Cross back in. Gian is their leading forward by the looks of it :rollin
Also looks like Swan is playing off the back flank so they're not getting a lot of decent possession forward of centre. Elliot isn't playing too shabby. Witts is huge. And Lynch is looking like an absolute unit.
-
Swanny must have thought "stuff this, I'm going forward." Roves Lynch's tap from centre wing, runs forward, takes a bounce (actually fumbled it), a few more steps and bangs home a 9 pointer.
-
Dogs lose both games. We're a little more competitive against Collingwood's E side. Dogs don't have anything that resembles a forward line this year.
-
Dogs will win the spoon. Posted it in the prediction thread a few weeks ago (coin flip between them and GWS) and tonight I think justifies that choice. They went out near full strength and got beaten easily by 2 sides not trying :lol
-
Bombers don,t look as sharp as they did the sametime last year .Not sure why. :shh
-
hows goddard going?
Picked up some cheap pozzies off hbf and was in the guts a few times
-
Caddy 1 goal from 1 kick. Rivers probably Geelong's best on ground first half.
-
Geelong being completely bent over by West Coast.
Edit: spoke too soon :P Geelong kicked several really quick goals, hit the lead and win by two after Selwood kicks a 9 pointer.
-
Mayne looks to have copped a serious ankle injury.
-
Good can't stand that prik and his poofy haircut!

Did West Coke suffocate Freo in another NAB Cup game? Shame they couldn't do it in the 2nd derby last year. ;D

Freo didn't play Sandilands in their second game last night and the Eagles flogged them.
As for today's games, Tambo with just one handball in a quarter/half; Gus not playing.

The AFL live stat thingy has updated itself. Tambo has had a total of 2 kicks, 1 handball, 1 mark, 1 free against and he's kicked a point ;D

Only the NAB Cup and plenty of best 22ers were missing but there'll be a concern for Adelaide with Tippett gone that no Walker = no Crows forward line.

Saints brought back to earth with a thud after flogging the Crows. Port up 59-14.

Saints flogged by 50 points!

Blingers was actually named in the bests in the second game. Gus was well Gus. He had the most hitouts ( 8 ) but any decent ruckman should've had a field day against Westhoff and Trengove.

Schulz again the most impressive.

Schulz again the most impressive.
When he wasn't refusing to lead, or leading into pockets. Weather was hot though. His field kicking is worse than Tambo's, lucky he doesn't have to do it too much.

THERE is concern that extreme heat during the NAB Cup could be worsened by the trial of interchange restrictions.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-02-18/hot-spots-worry-clubs
The forecast on Friday is 29 degrees. Hopefully it's starting to cool off by the time we play in the 2nd and 3rd games.
-
Come home.Richie :(
-
Anyway moving onto next Friday and the Tiges game which matters to us. I'm guessing with the warmer weather and capped interchange we'll do something similar to last year when we made a fair few changes between the two games. The choice is whether we go with our 'A' and then 'B' sides or mix and match to even them up. Last year from memory we went with a inexperienced side in the second game against Hawthorn.
So start with something like:
B: Morris Rance Astbury
HB: Houli Griffiths Ellis
C: Grigg Martin Deledio
HF: S.Edwards A.Edwards Newman
F: Nahas Riewoldt Vickery
R: Maric Tuck Cotchin
Int: Jackson, Conca, Petterd, Vlastuin
Then for the second game introduce fresh legs from the rest available - Knights, Elton, McGuane. Dea, Derickx, Verrier, Arnot, Darrou, McIntosh, McBean, McDonough, Williams, White, Batchelor, Helbig, O'Hanlon and Stephenson (if he's okay again as he missed the intra-club).
Grimes, Chaplin, Lonergan and Foley to miss.
-
What has happened to Grimes and Chaplin???
-
What has happened to Grimes and Chaplin???
Chaplin isn't far away. He's expected to play in either round 2 or 3 of the NAB Cup. Grimes is still coming back from his hammy injury he did last year. The Club was talking round 1 but that seems unlikely.

NO!!!!! its rediculous
-
Do Richmond members get in for free?
It's been a number of years probably almost a decade now since membership got us in free to the NAB Cup.
-
What about AFL or MCC members? AFL look after their own and what not.
-
THE AFL has loosened its new trial rules capping interchange rotations, with clubs allowed two extra players on the bench for the second and third rounds of the NAB Cup.
Clubs were advised on Friday they would be able to select three interchange players and three substitutes for the next two rounds of the pre-season competition.

Well the Lions just pumped the Hawks in the second half of their game to win 32-11 and we beat Brisbane so perhaps our loss to the Suns is looking better ;D :nope

Without Ablett Gold Coast doesn't really have that midfield player that can influence the game yet.
They need Bock back ASAP in their forward lots of long bombs into the forward being rebounded straight back out.

I know it's the per season but the one thing that I said worries me going into round 1 is the Blues forwards and they clicked today. I hope they don't expose our back line if Chapman and Grimes don't play.... :-\

Its hard to comment only looking at the scores but it looks like the Swans must of been missing players and playing poorly because even GWS beat them by a fair margin in a half of footy. Next week against Fremantle would be more telling of a true indication of how Carlton are going.

Exactly, had Black not kicked that goal then North would be 9th for the 3rd time in 4 years.
At least we can concentrate on structures and game plan rather than winning a pre season cup.

Hawks were just trolling with half their side out.
Was Stringer's injury related to his leg? An injury in a bloke's first ever quarter doesn't look the best when he was drafted under an injury cloud.

It looked like (the way he hobbled off) and the commentators called an ankle but they had no footage for the reply? Would be a shame, kicked a great oal with his first kick!
-
Think it was his shin.

rolled an ankle i heard this morning

Geelong have blown a full strength Adelaide out of the water in the first quarter. Mind you they did have the breeze.
Cats 2.5.6 (54)
Crows 0.2.0 (12)
-
I don't buy into pre-season form, but regardless of the team they're fielding, Adelaide have massive issues to address before round one. Walker looks lost, their kicking is woeful and struggling for a clean transition. Might have been one hit wonders last year. Frustration looks to be setting in too.
-
Cows certainly missing Gus :)

Cats won by 63 pts (126-63) and they took the foot off the pedal in the last.

Geelong defence dominated but I thought Rivers played a good game.

Not sure who fremantle has out but Carlton leading 66 - 7 with 12 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter.

I missed the sides at the start. Was too busy snooping bummerblitz :shh
Carlton just look better in general though. Don't know if Freo would have flown over too much of their top shelf at this stage of the pre season though.

Seriously time for a Lucas , Lloyd , heck even a Carey , tarrant or someone to come coach out forwards , imagine our forwards were a fully functioning outfit . We rate these guys on potential , but actuality they're very poor (partially delivery issue / partially spacing and leading).

I only saw the first half of the game between the Crows and Carlton but Adelaide was good against Carlton who looked to be in great form leading into the practise match. Just checked the score its now currently 109 Crows - 79 Blues. Essendon shouldn't be over confident after only beating GWS.

Adelaide won by just 3 pts after leading by 5 goals at 3/4 time. Crows went scoreless in the last quarter. The cap on rotations hurt Adelaide as they were reaching the 20 interchange limit per quarter before time-on. They obviously were out of juice in the last qtr.
I don't see us making it as our % isn't high enough but, with Carlton losing, a thumping win tomorrow could keep our NAB Cup Grand Final chances alive (need Geelong to narrowly beat North as well). If we had beaten North we would've been now favourites to make the Preseason GF.

Yes, we absolutely should have beaten North. Some things were out of our control, like the AFL gifting them the precious rest between games, and the rub of the green with the umpiring YET AGAIN >:(. Seriously-what is it with this mob)? Case in point:
The crumbing goal that was allowed to stand after Petrie dropped the ball like a hot potato in a tackle.
Other things were in our control, like the baffling decision to have Cotchin, Martin, Deledio and Newman all sitting on the bench in those make or break last few frantic minutes when the game was up for grabs. A strange choice from a team that has spent a lot of its drills over summer practicing how to close out tight games.

GWS also rested a few players whereas the Bombers were close to full strength again. No Patton or Cameron up forward for the Giants plus about another half-dozen missing. It just shows not surprisingly they don't have the necessary depth yet and why they'll finish near the bottom again this year. When they've had close to their best 22 this preseason they've been competitive but once they lose a few of their better players they'll struggle.

Think they do
Down at Geelong, the EXTREME heat policy is in. No capped Inter-change, no subs, six on the interchange, 10 mins qtr time breaks and they can go into the rooms during the breaks

We've got "lockup donuts" he'll kick 30-40 goals this year. :lol

Don't be a tosser. I'm talking about draftees.
-
Looks like it could be a Carlton - Lions grand final and not the collingwood - carlton foxtel has been talking up the prospects of.
-
Yeah it does look like it. Lions have been playing sides close to what will run out round 1 and trying to get some form before hand, like us. Collingwood look to be comfortable and getting games into their fringe players. Remembering Collingwood lost to Melbourne last year in the NAB cup. But going by this I reckon Brisbane might be in the race with teams like us, n0rf, Essendong etc for positions 7 and 8.
-
Don't be a tosser. I'm talking about draftees.
Chill out bro just taking the pee out of "donuts" game.
No need for name calling. I will refrain from retaliating.

Excellent pick up, should be able to teach our forwards a thing or two ;D and show some leadership ;D in our forward 50. ;D.
Should kick 30-40 goals this season ;D
-
Start calling Martin "stillnox" or something then too. No one cares about your little nick name for a bloke no one is expecting much from and taking pot shots at whenever possible. Starting to sound like dorkstar and his Dea bashing.
Speaking of which, could call him Matt "what's the point-guard?" Dea while we're at it.

I'm sure we'll all have plenty of these names if the season doesn't pan out as expected. :thumbsup
-
Reckon we're in for an epic meltdown if this season turns out a flop :lol :help :help
In other news, Lions comfortably beat 'Collingwood.' Commentators made a good point about comparing Collingwood's 1-3 year players out there compared to a strong Brisbane side where most of them have had 4-5+ pre-seasons and more than a season's worth of games each.
-
But going by this I reckon Brisbane might be in the race with teams like us, n0rf, Essendong etc for positions 7 and 8.
Yeah agreed. If you sit down and go through their list with more than a passing glance, they're actually not a bad side. Midfield is strong and they have some good types at either end of the ground. Still our bunnies though :shh
-
Have said the past couple years that their midfield was going to be good. Reckon their bookends a still us about 2 years ago, but they have a really good core group coming through in their early-mid 20s with 50+ games under their belt.
-
Nah Brisbane won't, just waiting for a mate :rollin

As pathetic as the decision was, to get a washed up 29y/o trouble maker we don't need to our club?
Or as pathetic his attitude was 3 days after getting drafted by his third club?
Or as pathetic as his on field performances, so far this preseason?

Not sure what is worse about this post:-
That you think Aaron Edwards will play up again - he got caught drinking while on holiday which a large % of AFL players do, he was unlucky enough to be caught ::)
Or
That you believe that he would somehow convince other players to do the same thing, you honestly think our culture is that paper thin?
Quit the evangelical whining pal, no one buys it
-
So let me get this straight ....
Had we won the game against North ( the game we had Cotch,Lids and Dusty on the pine for the last 3 minutes) we would be playing Brisbane ( a team we own at the moment) in the NAB cup grand final.
As a long suffering Richmond supporter - winning any silverware would be an exciting experience.
The club is trying to attract 60 000 members....we may of missed a golden opportunity .

It is a good point you raise Matt, however I am hopeful that by parking our A graders on the bench at such a critical time will be an invaluable lesson for our players who were left afield. Especially if that time comes during the season proper and we are hit by injuries etc

All you guys talk so much poo it makes me spew.
A.Edwards isn't any more but a good VFL player.
Lauding him because he got locked up and had a night on the pee is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
This guy wasn't a good player. He was a good player at frankston. Mildly handy at north but they finally had a gut full of his immaturity send decided a late pick in the draft was good as they could get.
He's given a chance at his third club and he's such a moron, gets arrested three days after being drafted.
Facts are he's exactly the type of player we don't need.
He's exactly the character of player we've been trying to get rid of.
He was purely drafted as insurance for the forward line incase we had no other option left after injury.
He's a hack, a has been, a fringe player, a pretender, a teenager for his whole AFL career.
All players drink. Who gives a poo? Well I drink too but if I was on my third chance I'd be busting my balls to prove something.
All he's proven is that he's stupid, lazy, and he's forgotten how to get the footy.
He wasn't a good choice for our club and it will be plainly obvious to everyone that he won't ever be.

Well said
Still waiting for his followers to come forward and tell us how is going to be a great foil for Jack
What peees off is that people can stick up for a hack like this drongo and get stuck into some of the better players we've seen in the yellow and black.
ie Campbell, Bowden, Richo etc. of previous years.
and very smart players now like Reiwoldt who gets plenty of stick but still wins the Coleman in a forward line that hasn't given him any help whatsoever.
You'd think by the way people are talking, (his followers) "lockup" was the best thing since the day Silvester was going to be the answer of our woes down back....... & how did that work out for us?
It reminds me of the ridiculous frenzy of Justin Plapps inclusion and first game.
A. "Lockup" Edwards isn't the answer... Never was and never will be!
-
Plappy surely doesn't believe in fate. Should have been so much more.
Tigra, can you name "the followers" as I have no idea who you are referring to? Surely he doesn't have many if any.

Read the A.Edwards thread from beginning.
Then read the thread that spoke about him getting arrested.
Plenty of followers on those two threads I can assure you.

You're making it sound like there was a petition to get him down to tigerland? I think like the miller pickup, most were indifferent, cant recall ppl hailing him as the messiah.. I personally thought he was a short term slight upgrade on Mcguane and Miller but at this rate thats a bad call :lol I think bc some ppl took umbrage at how hard you went at him from day dot, its clouded your judgement and you interpret that as them being "followers" ;D

I thought he may be a slight upgrade on Miller, but I think I may have been wrong, at least Miller gave a good hand pass out the back

At least you can admit that you made a bad call. Many cant and that's commendable. :thumbsup
Some weren't happy with his inclusion such as gerks, M.T, Daniel to name a few.
Some were wrapped ie. Claw to name one. ;D
I read many had in him our best 22. :lol
I take umbrage at how people stick up for used up hacks and expect them to be our answer.
The club isn't a top four club yet. We are still fighting to just into the eight. Until we are a legitimate top four team and fighting for a grand final berth year after year then we can try a Podsiadly or Brown or Dew type to add to the team to fill a required need.
Expecting this guy to be something is pure fantasy &/or extreme luck.
We have problems up forward, his type or the Millers of this world aren't going to help all they do is stymy development in a young team that can develop together to step into the next phase. Miller you could argue a case because he was a good leader & has a hot wife but this guy doesn't have either, still a kid in a mans body.

He has tatts tho

Has tigra finished his self righteous, sanctimonious bs rant or is he still stinking the thread up?

Goes to show what a joke NAB Cup is. Essendon top 8? Looks as accurate as a Mike Sheahan top 50. :shh

I'm far from a saint Owl I assure you just ask Robert Walls. I'm sure he still remembers me and what I said to him in 1997.
......Love the Tigers though. :thumbsup
