Melbourne Demons look for new motivational entrance song for 2013
Al Paton
From: Herald Sun
January 11, 2013 2:43PM

THE AFL is following the lead of professional wrestling by asking clubs to find a pre-match entrance song for 2013.

While the song is not compulsory, clubs have been encouraged to find a suitable anthem that can inspire players and fans before teams hit the field this season.

Renowned in pro wrestling circles, the entrance song is common in US sports including Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, college football and the UFC.

Richmond tested the water last season by playing Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses at some matches and Melbourne is exploring the possibility of a tribal theme for 2013.

The Demons made the brave (crazy?) move of asking for suggestions on its stuff and Twitter accounts yesterday, and both were swamped with suggestions.

Predictably, they weren't all helpful.

What song would you like to see your club run out to?

I for one just like the theme song it's what makes our game unique worldwide.

Although I must admit that I have seen a lot of European soccer clubs do this and yes it can create a frenzy as the teams run out, but European soccer clubs exclusively play home games on their home turf, the MCG has many co-tenants. Loses its appeal.

Agreed, the start of that song is intimidating but leave it as is.

Play team song as team comes out  and leave it at that.

For pre game entertainment how about pot shots at James Sherry or if Walla$$ is on the SEN preview on the big screen on our home games..... I'm sure we'll think of something.

Carlton have a song David Allan Coe-Now I lay me down and cheat

Essendon- Throw down your weapon- Midnight oil

It's late and I'm tired.

See you all again when the AFL proposes to fornicate the game at a time real soon.

P.S Do me a favour and find songs for the two most irrelevant clubs, Nought and Melbourne. I can't be buggered. :thumbsup

Essendon's is definately I Want The World by Veruca Salt.

I reckon Leaps And Bounds would be perfect for us as a tune playing BEFORE they walk out not AS they are walking out.

A song while everyone is getting to their seats or standing posys.

Would be unobtrusive and still get everyone pumped at the same time.

Not always. I like to mix things up from time to time.  ;D You know I like Shed as a player and I just think you focus in on your dislike of him a bit too much. He is continuing to improve and has bulked up substantially over the past year. And you have to admit that even his kicking (which was an issue admittedly) had improved over the second half of last season.

:thumbsup......I actually don't dislike him but he has frustrated the crap out of me. Just when I think he is coming good he does something stupid, yes he has improved, yes his kicking has got better, yes he has gotten bigger. He just doesn't have that X factor about him at the moment, when he gets that and I hope he does, then IMO he will of made it.

I would love to see him become the Betts/Milne of our team..I hope he does this year. Believe it or not, when I watch games I really give him credit when he does perform and do some good things, I just want to see a 5-7 goal game out of him like the really talented small forwards produce and against a good side.

Won't happen. He's just not that good and never will be IMO. And if he only ever does it once, what value is that? – apart from us not having to listen to you ever again  ;D

Sheddy will kick his 1-2 goals, set a few up, apply his forward pressure, win some clearances, have his share of shanked kicks and turnovers, get pushed off the ball and rag dolled more than you'd like, he'll run all day, provide some midfield relief, show durability and be professional in his preparation week in week out to play a role. At worst he's a contributor, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Will be around longer than Nahas, King & White will be.

Surely you would have to expect more than 1 goal a game from him, surely!! If he kicked 2 goals a game with 20+ possessions and no-1 turnovers a game then yes, that would be consistent.

If you're talking about blokes like Milne and Betts with 40-50+ goals, they're from teams without a Coleman Medalist or even a half decent key forward. Averages almost 18 disposals a game with a 29 goal season in a team with a key forward and a plethora of goal kicking mid fielders.
Title: Re: New club entrance theme songs .... (Herald-Sun)
Post by: WA Tiger on January 14, 2013, 05:21:27 PM
He is still not a game winner like Betts and Milne, just doesn't have the X factor like them and turns the ball over more, all 3 play similar roles.
Title: Re: New club entrance theme songs .... (Herald-Sun)

That's right. He's not as good as Milne or Betts.

and following your shifting goal posts, are there many players who average more than 20 possessions playing mainly forward?
Title: Re: New club entrance theme songs .... (Herald-Sun)
Post by: dwaino on January 14, 2013, 05:25:48 PM
How do they play similar roles when two of them often play full forward because the rest of their forward line is poo? Take away Sheds' 22 disposal and 4 goal game and make it an average game of 18 and 1, he still finishes the season on around an average of 17 disposals a game and 25 goals for the season playing off the ball. Bloke is consistently better than average without being a superstar.

Milne and Betts spent time on the ball yet still only managed 12 and 13 disposals a game, with season highs of 16 and 17?  Look out, these blokes are weapons. If you're trouble they'll get put on the ball and tear you a new one  :shh

Go back over the years, compare that, not just one year, also see how many games the 3 have won off their own boot....think you know the answer.

Anyway, not really the thread for it, suffice to say, the same as I say every year, I hope he does play well and have an excellent year...for a change. ;D

I don't care about over the years. That's not relevant. The most relevant is 2012 and Edwards was consistently better than average and I'll judge him on that. In 2012, Milne and Betts played a lot of full forward, won their club's goal kicking with nobody in sight, and to top it off Milne averaged far less disposals than Edwards but had the 16th most clangers in the comp.

New Melbourne FC entrance song exclusive. Its a song called "Every time I ride my bike and I look at You I get a Flat" Originally performed by one of the great baritone singers - Mr Rex Hunt! At the conclusion of every match the members of the MFC will stand and the great tenor Mr Jeff Wilson will sing the Australian National Anthem.

PS - Does anyone have a recording of Jeff Wilson doing the Australian National Anthem on 3AW Footy all those years ago. The first time I heard Rex play the recording the coffee I was drinking came back through my nostrils. ;D :lol
