At this stage, the only Tiger likely to be unavailable in round one is Nathan Foley (achilles), although he has progressed to running on the track. With players such as Jack Riewoldt (hip), Troy Chaplin (knee) and Ivan Maric (groin) on the cusp of joining in all of training, and Jake King (knee) and Dylan Grimes (hamstring) progressing well and running unimpeded, the Tigers' NAB Cup squad is likely to be rotated. With up to eight new Tigers to be tried against the Indigenous All Stars, expect them to use a mix of youth and experience across the pre-season competition.

I stilll don't think the injured players will have the fitness required to play games out until about roud 5, could hamper us in round 1. Anyway at least they are on their way back.

They shouldn't be that far behind, you'd hope. They should be doing enough to not lose to much of a fitness base. But I guess it depends when they get into full running. If everyone is in full training before our NAB cup (apart from Foley) they should be good for Round 1
-
I was thinking that Lonegan would be elevated to cover Foley while he recovered early in the year but then I heard Lonegan was injured too. Is this correct? Who took the inside mid role in the second part of the year? Was it Conca?

Don't think it was Conca.
He played most games from the start till he missed the last 3 with a broken bone in the foot.
Dea came in for round 11 and played most of the rest.
Same with O'Hanlon.
Helbig came in from round 19 to 23.
White came back in late for 19-22.
So Dea and O'Hanlon covered for Foley (or rather Foley's replacement, Jackson?) .
Helbig and White covered for Conca.

INJURY LIST
Dylan Grimes (hamstring) 2-4 weeks
Nathan Foley (Achilles) 6-8 weeks
David Astbury (foot) 2-3 weeks
THE Tigers have only two first-choice players on the injury list and are talking positively about both playing early in the season. The club says it is delighted by the success of Grimes’ latest hamstring surgery and the injury-cursed defender is back in full training – but well short of match practice. Foley has started sprinting but will be carefully managed. Damien Hardwick says he will be available for selection “about Round 5-7”.

Injury Update - 21/03/2013
RICHMOND
David Astbury (foot) – 1-2 weeks
Nathan Foley (Achilles) – 4-6 weeks
Dylan Grimes (hamstring) – available
Summary: "[Foley and Grimes] are tracking well, although they definitely won’t play round one. Nathan is back to his previous best sprint work. We've just got to make sure we manage his loads and get him up and going. He'll probably be back about round five to seven, somewhere around there. Dylan is training full-time with the group now, and we've just got to make sure we get some game time into him." – coach Damien Hardwick (from Fox Sports).

Foley - back into full skills with the main group. Now needs to complete 2 weeks of full training. Then will play with Coburg in two weeks [I'm guessing he meant weekend April 13-14] then AFL in round 4.
Astbury - a week away from match play. Back into training this week and will play in the VFL next week.

Musashi Medical Update: Round 5
Elite Performance Manager Peter Burge speaks to Roar Vision about the recent additions to Richmond's injury list.
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-04-24/musashi-medical-update-round-5
Conca - stress reaction in his foot. Similar to Astbury. Will miss 4-6 weeks :(. In a boot for 5-10 days and then progressing to a alter-G scenario and then onto normal training.
King - hobbling around early in the week but it's settled down now and expect him to train fully tomorrow.
Astbury - Was ready to play last week but felt a little bit of discomfort kicking the ball so we took the cautious approach and rested him for another week. Ready to go this week.
Foley - played a half, had 18 possies and moved very well. Has been knocking on Burge's door to play AFL already but we'll stick to the process. Axel will play 3/4ers for Coburg this week followed by a full game the following week.
-
i wonder if this is the same foot he had problems with last year?
-
If it is, my foot would like to be a major problem getting stuck right up our medical teams backside :banghead

the heavy workloads they have combined with poor running technique would be my guess. probably also a big factor in hip and possibly groin issues

I played most of a season with a calf strain and didn't really have an issue, it just was more sore when I stopped which actually kept me on my bike and moving around. But then again I don't play AFL :shh

Interesting, personally never had a calf strain but had a friend who plays basketball and they had strain. They didn't play for a couple of weeks came back and then tore it and missed the remainder of the season. The doctor told them it tore because the original strain hadn't healed properly

By stop I mean when I took off again at a high pace, that's when it hurt. Maybe because in basketball it's more explosive whereas I'm a plodder and could just run around half paced the whole game. ;D

New feature on the AFL website is a weekly injury rundown by Doc Larkins
Here's his take on the Tigers:
=====================
Doc Larkins' injury list: round seven
By Dr Peter Larkins
6:07pm AEST Tuesday, May 7, 2013
RICHMOND
Reece Conca (foot) - 3-4 weeks
Dylan Grimes (foot) - 1-2 weeks
Ivan Maric (ankle) - test
Ricky Petterd (calf) - 1-2 weeks
Brett O'Hanlon (ankle) - 3-4 weeks
Ty Vickery (concussion) - test
The Doc says: Maric is an outside chance to play while Grimes and Petterd could miss two to three games. Vickery is more likely to pass a concussion assessment late in week.

Good that Vickery will get up by sounds of it. We don't really have another fwd/ruck. At least Stephenson is going well in the VFL and Port's rucks are poo so Maric is replaceable if need be againt Port and even Melbourne if need be.
Also, where is the long term injury Doc?

Reckon Orren will give us the same output Maric has been giving this year. Pretty much a like for like. :shh

Agree good form Orren = poo form Maric. McGuane in the ruck <<<<<<<<<<<< Vickery in the ruck. Vickery needs to play.
inb4 Vickery is a poo truck.
-
god help us if we have to play mcguane in the ruck ever again.
He looked so confused against geelong. One time he even ran into the backline thinking it was the fwd line.
He should be wearing one of those dog collars that gives him a 100 volt charge anytime he makes it past the fwd 50m line.

Musashi Medical Update: Round 7
Richmond Elite Performance Manager Peter Burge gives an update on the Tigers' injury status leading into Round 7:
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-05-10/musashi-medical-update-round-7
Summary
* Cotchin - had a little bit of (knee) soreness during the week. He did most of the training yesterday but was just not quite right and given the player he is it’s going to make more sense to give him the extra week and get him right for next week. No structural damage at all; it's just a little bit of soreness which is just left over from the game and he should be right to go next week.
* Vickery - with the AFL’s rules on concussion now, the medicos have had a good look at Ty this week and have ruled him out. He was able to do all the training Thursday, so we expect him back next week.
* Petterd - With his lack of preseason last year, he's been able to most of training since Christmas and play a few game. He has a bit of a calf strain which should only keep him out for one or two weeks.
* Grimes - big toe was quite sore after the game, so it’s just altered his foot mechanics a little bit. We need to get that right, given his lack of pre-season, and to make sure that he can get a full week of training in before he returns to play.
* Foley - great to have him back in the side. He's worked really really hard over the preseason; he's had 3 games at Coburg under his belt; he's ready to go and up and firing. Looking forward to having a big game.

In other injury news from Tigerland, defender Ricky Petterd is also scheduled to return after the bye, as he recovers from a calf strain.
Talented, young midfielder Reece Conca is considered a chance to resume this weekend after missing the past five matches with a foot injury.
And gun midfielder Brett Deledio has been cleared of any damage to his knee, after he received treatment to it during the second quarter of last Saturday night’s loss to the Bombers.

Jake King (ankle) – 1 week
Shane Tuck (shoulder) - 4-6 weeks

Might be onto something G , hope its only a minor hammy, missing the next game would mean he s been off for about 5... That's good management :shh

Bo its not a hammy this time..its the foot

Are u talking about grimes G i was referring to ellis, i thought it was only minor hammy

Is Foley injured?

Are u talking about grimes G i was referring to ellis, i thought it was only minor hammy
Standard hammy = 3 weeks
After the bye he'd have missed 3 weeks
No big deal

Felt like he was still 4-6 weeks away last week.
Conversely, it seems Grimes has been 4-5 weeks since he debut 3 years ago

I just can't get over how unlucky the fellow and the club is.
His inclusion was really just starting to bear some fruit as he was gaining more confidence he was beginning to really impact games. Could only imagine what might have been had he played the rest of the year.
I hope he can recover in time for the start of next season.

Petterd should never have been picked up
Petterd has been an excellent acquisition gerky, be objective, what better rookie options where there that could come in and knock up 20 possies a game like they're splitting peas ::)

Did he get 20 did he? Let me guess, once then it went south? He can't stay on the park, that's the main issue, and having used a senior spot on another injury prone re-tread in Knighta, we shouldn't have taken the risk. Could have gone for Kyle Martin, he racks up possessions like he's asleep on the couch while his wife is shelling the peas 8) Or Sam Dwyer, who has shares in McCains 8) 8)
Vlaussy should have been playing off half back from round 1 instead of Petterd.

Hi Beanbags and welcome aboard OER :).
There's no mention of any injury to McBean in the RFC website's Coburg report.
Liam McBean
Was our only dangerous forward at times throughout the game. Provided good energy in the forward line, having four shots at goal. Had an excellent third quarter, taking four or five marks inside 50.

Depends how extensive the clot is. Know someone that was on warfarin for like two weeks and was fine but then someone close to me is still on blood thinners after ~5 months

Ditto
Had a friend come back from the States and developed a clot (it was a really nasty one) and they ended up on Warfarin for over 6 months, with weekly blood tests for the first 3 months then monthly blood test for another 6 odd months. Still had to have blood test after then finished the course of Warfarin
-
Until the club says different I'm assuming its minor based only on them listing him 1 week every week because for me that makes me think they know it's not to bad but they are just trying to get it right. If it was that bad it could end his career and I reckon they wouldn't toy around like that if it was the case

When did McIntosh do his shoulder? :o

Aspirin doesn't dissolve blood clots. It's used more to prevent them. And it doesn't cause ulceration either but that is a good reminder of why you should always take tablets with food unless specified to take on an empty stomach.
To dissolve clots we normally use warfarin (Coumadin usually, or marevan occasionally) or enoxaparin AKA clexane injections which are injected into your fat layer with a small needle.
Both stay in your system for several days.
King will be fine. I believe the clot is in his hamstring muscle, not his veinous system, so most likely very minimal risk.

Aspirin = cancer of the guts :-\

Well I've been working in the medical industry for over four years, with lots of time spent in surgical wards, the operating theatre and also a period of time in the stroke unit. Given aspirin to hundreds of people - no ulcers.
And I'd rather have a hundred ulcers than a single heart attack or stroke :)

Maybe it's only for those people that believe in 'an aspirin a day'.
Was gonna say that myself :thumbsup

Aspirin daily is a good thing IMO. Statistically after the age of 50. Just go enteric coated or with food = no ulcers.
Sorry to go off topic.

All you good folk do realise though that Kingy would probably play with the Ebola virus .

Heard today King has a slight calf strain that he had with the hammy. He thought it was a cork when he recovered from the hammy but realized it was a strain when attempted to train last week. No big deal I'm told :thumbsup
-
aspirin daily will kill u
-
would you like one?
-
The Doc (Larkin) says: No new concerns this week. King (round 17 hammy) needs more rehab time to avoid the risk of recurrence. Petterd is in a similar risk phase with a right adductor strain from round 18.

Not in small doses. Will thin the blood and help reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. Even so I wouldn't advise taking aspirin daily unless advised by your doctor. Absolutely no point medicating yourself if you don't have to.

Cruel year with injury.
Knights is best 22 or there about. Certainly ahead of Nahas and pushing a few others.
McIntosh was the smoky for the Astbury position.
McBean would of kicked 20 the last two weeks if young Cadeyn Williams was feeding him the pill.

How about bringing Helbig in for newy and let him have a week off if there is any risk of further injury?

Jack Riewoldt, Ricky Petterd injured as Tigers lose any hope of top-four finish
Matt Windley
From: Herald Sun
August 18, 2013
JACK Riewoldt sent an injury scare through Punt Road on Saturday as Richmond slumped to a shock 10-point loss to Carlton at the MCG.
On what was a dirty day for the Tigers, Damien Hardwick's men coughed up a 30-point quarter time lead, conceded any chance they had of making the top four and potentially lost Ricky Petterd to a hamstring injury.
Riewoldt limped off the ground in the fourth quarter after hyperextending his right knee in an awkward landing from a marking contest on the MCC members wing.
He was taken straight to the rooms for treatment but emerged a short time later and returned to the field.
However the dual Coleman medallist looked far from comfortable as he played out the game, reaching for his knee on several occasions and pulling up gingerly after making leads for the ball.
Hardwick said he was confident his full forward was OK.
"He just went up for a mark and came down awkward,'' Hardwick said.
Petterd has what Hardwick described as a "possible slight strain in his hammy'', while Dylan Grimes - playing his first game since injuring his foot in Round 6 - was substituted midway through the third term, although the coach intimated that that move was pre-planned.
Richmond plays bottom-placed Greater Western Sydney at Skoda Stadium next week and Hardwick did not rule out the possibility of resting players.
It's more than likely now the Tigers will finish somewhere between fifth and seventh, which will see them play an elimination final in Melbourne regardless of how other results pan out in the last two rounds.
"We'll just assess as we go,'' Hardwick said.
"There was guys this week, (Shane) Edwards who was close but we decided to hold back, (Matt) White was the same.
"We've just got some players that we've got to manage at this time of the year and you'd rather take the one week (out) than two or three if you push the envelope with them.
"Most sides are going through management issues at this time of the year and we're probably no different.''

Riewoldt must pass fitness test for Giants
By Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
5:09pm AEST Sunday, August 18, 2013
RICHMOND forward Jack Riewoldt has been cleared of any structural damage to his right knee after undergoing scans following the Tigers' loss to Carlton on Saturday.
The star goalkicker landed awkwardly in a marking contest during the fourth quarter against the Blues, hyperextending his knee.
He returned to finish the match but appeared in discomfort, repeatedly reaching for his right knee.
The 24-year-old will need to complete training during the week before being cleared for selection against Greater Western Sydney next Sunday.
Defender Ricky Petterd will also need to be assessed during the week, the Tigers declared on their website, as he pushes to overcome hamstring soreness.
Former skipper Chris Newman, who has not played a final in his 232-game career, will need to pass a fitness test this week to face the Giants after missing the Carlton clash with an ankle injury.
Forward Matt White (hamstring soreness) was a late withdrawal against the Blues and will also face a fitness test later this week.
Forwards Shane Edwards and Jake King are available for selection after overcoming hamstring injuries.
Captain Trent Cotchin suffered a bruised shin against Carlton but is expected to be available against the Giants.

Who would you rather have in the team next week Grimes or Astbury? On recent form Astbury has him imo.
-
Mmmm but Grimes most recent game > any of Astburys. Finally coming into some sort of form that Astbury can't match
-
Who would you rather have in the team next week Grimes or Astbury? On recent form Astbury has him imo.
Grimes
Astbury is important as the first covering key back.
The back line Almost set in stone
Chaplin. Grimes. Morris.
Houli. Rance. Deledio/Vlastuin/Pettard
Pettard is the only obvious weak link. I wouldn't mind seeing us play four falls with astbury if possible
-
Astbury is a great 4th defender for us to have as back-up as we know he can come in and play a role when needed. But Grimes game on the weekend was the Grimes that we all love. Was sensational. :clapping
-

No brainer for mine
Has to be Grimes, plays on instinct, has more pace and can play on a tall or a runner and has a lot more footy smarts.
Astbury is too slow in the pace & reaction stakes IMHO.
And TBH it's a bit like the Maric/Big O/Vickery issue, don't think we can or will play both Astbury and Grimes, one has to miss out and it will be Astbury; rightly again IMO.
And similar to the Vickery situation, Grimes is a "non negotiable" (read favourite) at the selection table and that means if he is fit, he plays
-
Astbury gets swallowed up in the heat of a final, Grimes has gradually improved each week.....

In injury news, star forward Jack Riewoldt has needed minor knee surgery that won’t affect his return in late November.
Small forward Jake King also needed toe surgery but will make a swift recovery after surgeries to his foot, wrist and knee in the previous off-season.

Yeah, Jack's knee is fine. Small loose body removed, nothing major. Conca's injury a little worse than first thought but not as bad as Grimes' one.
