Moving onto the game this weekend ...
Match preview: Hawthorn v Richmond
By Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
March 5, 2013
WHERE AND WHEN
Aurora Stadium, Saturday March 9, 1.10pm (AEDT)
MISSING
Hawthorn: Cyril Rioli (ankle), Paul Puopolo (knee), Brendan Whitecross (knee)
Richmond: Dylan Grimes (hamstring), Nathan Foley (achilles)
LAST WEEK
Hawthorn: The Hawks went down to the Western Bulldogs in a dramatic finish at Etihad Stadium on Friday night that resulted in a one-point win to the Dogs – their first victory in 257 days. Luke Breust copped a knock to his lower left leg and David Hale his left ankle, which leaves both in doubt for this week.
Richmond: The Tigers closed out a tight one against Essendon on Saturday evening in Wangaratta, prevailing by eight points. They were missing a raft of senior players and are poised to load up over the next few weeks with Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Ivan Maric and Steven Morris among those who sat out against the Bombers.
WHAT THEY SAY
Hawthorn: "It's early on. We were a bit rusty tonight [against the Bulldogs]. We need to get better, but it's fortunate for us we've still got three our four weeks to get ourselves right prior to round one." – Alastair Clarkson, senior coach.
Richmond: "There's probably about eight guys who will come back into our best 22 and that's really good for us. We've gone about it in a certain way, so we'll probably play pretty much full-strength sides for the rest of the NAB Cup" – Damien Hardwick, senior coach.
WE SAY
Hawthorn: The Hawks showed last week their late start to training has left them with some work to do in comparison to otherclubs. We're yet to see Luke Hodge, Grant Birchall, Shaun Burgoyne, Liam Shiels or Xavier Ellis but any of them could be considered this week.
Richmond: The Tigers are building their side and will almost be at full strength either this week or next with just Foley to be unavailable for round one and Grimes likely to join him. Winning a close one last week will help the Tigers with confidence as round one nears.

Aurora clash vital for Tigers
By Alex Fair
The Examiner
March 6, 2013, 11:13 p.m.
FORGET about it being a meaningless preseason game, Saturday's Aurora Stadium NAB Cup engagement with last year's grand finalist Hawthorn has plenty attached to it for Richmond.
See your ad here
Taking on the runners-up at their home away from home will form a huge part the Tigers' preparation for round one and beyond, as the success-starved club looks to climb back up the AFL ladder.
Those are the thoughts of Richmond's Tasmanian great Matthew Richardson.
The Tigers are looking to return to September for the first time since 2001 after edging closer and closer over the past two seasons. This includes 10 losses last year by 22 points or fewer and one draw.
`Sometimes it's hard to gauge during a preseason, but any opportunity you get to beat a team that has played in a grand final you can always gain confidence from,'' said the former Devonport forward who played 282 games and kicked 800 goals in the yellow and black.
``I'm sure Richmond would like to put in a good account of itself and it's a good preparation (for the season) to play a team like Hawthorn,'' Richardson said.
``I expect Hawthorn will ramp up their preparation and I'd expect they'd have a better team in, so it will be a good opportunity to see where they're at.''
The contest will also give the Tigers another opportunity to take Hawthorn's scalp following its 62-point win in round nine last season.
``There's no doubt if they beat them twice in a row, that will give them some confidence against them heading into the season,'' Richardson, who is now a Channel Seven football commentator, said.
The Tigers will enter the game with a 2-1 preseason record after a last-gasp win against Essendon in Wangaratta, with a team missing plenty of experienced types including including captain Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Ivan Maric.
Hawthorn is yet to win a match this preseason after falling to the Western Bulldogs by a point last week.
It will be the third meeting between the two sides in Launceston.
The Hawks have won both clashes, a 41-point win in round 12, 2006, and by 73 points in the 2010 NAB Cup.
Hawthorn Tasmanian operations manager Shayne Stevenson said yesterday about 7000 tickets had been sold for Saturday's match, with a crowd between 10,000 and 12,000 expected.
Tasmanian Richmond greats Matthew Richardson and Michael Roach will feature at a pre-match function tomorrow night at The Boathouse in Launceston.

The event will be hosted by Tigers premiership player Dale Weightman and will also feature an assistant coach.
The night will cost $50 and will start at 7.30pm.

Question mark over Lance Franklin's fitness for Hawthorn's NAB Cup tie with Richmond
by: Greg Denham
From: The Australian
March 07, 2013
HAWTHORN will introduce a trio of grand final players for the first time this season, against Richmond in Launceston on Saturday, but star forward Lance Franklin is no certainty to make the start line.
Shaun Burgoyne, Grant Birchall and Xavier Elllis are scheduled to play for the first time in the NAB Cup series after overcoming injury concerns.
However, Hawks general manager of football operations Mark Evans yesterday said no decision had yet been made on whether Franklin heads south having played during the first two weeks of the pre-season series.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson - winless in the first three games of the pre-season - will today decide whether to rest Franklin, who booted five goals against the Western Bulldogs on a firm Etihad Stadium surface last Friday night.
Burgoyne has recovered from ankle surgery, while Birchall is over a corked thigh.
stuff Brian Lake will miss for the second week in succession due to calf tightness, as will ruckman David Hale (ankle) and Luke Breust (leg), who were both injured last week.
Evans said Hale's absence would pave he way for the return of injury-prone ruckman Max Bailey, who had last week off after playing in the first round of the NAB Cup series.
Small forward Paul Puopolo (knee) is back on track for the opening game of the season against Geelong on Easter Monday after he received bone bruising in the opening round of the NAB Cup. "He's really come good and joined in full training yesterday," Evans said.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick will play former Essendon midfielder Sam Lonergan for the first time this year.
Prized recruit Troy Chaplin, who crossed from Port Adelaide as a free agent last year, should play a half this weekend after a modified preparation following knee surgery last year.
However, former Adelaide forward Chris Knights is again likely to be rested.
Richmond remains hopeful that defender Dylan Grimes could have a hit out on Saturday week after making steady progress from on-going hamstring issues.
But Grimes, speedy midfielder Nathan Foley (Achilles) and key defender David Astbury are unlikely to be available for the start of the season proper, against Carlton on March 28.

Hey Tassie, quick reminder about the Tiges this weekend. Training is today at Aurora Stadium from approximately 1pm. Enter the ground via Gate 1 (opposite the Shell Service Station on Invermay Road).
Superstar forwards Matthew Richardson and Michael Roach will be the main attractions of a function for Tiger fans tonight from 7.30pm at The Boathouse, on Northbank, tickets at the door.
And the game tomorrow, tickets are available at the gate, we'll see you there!

Good to see Conca back :thumbsup.
On paper we should win with the side we're putting out:
My guess:
B: Batchelor Chaplin Morris
HB: Houli Griffiths Petterd
C: Grigg Deledio Ellis
HF: Conca Riewoldt King
F: S.Edwards Vickery A.Edwards
R: Maric Martin Cotchin
Int: Newman, Dea, Jackson, Nahas, White, Arnot, O'Hanlon
Subs: Rance (to replace Chaplin at HT), Lonergan to come on after HT
but it depends how seriously we take the game this week. Sometimes the better experienced players in preseason games just want to run around, blow off the cobwebs and work on a few technical things before the real stuff starts. For example Chaplin and Lonergan will be just aiming to just get through half a game.
-
Lonergsn type plodders should not be looking to cruise whatsoever
-
will JR play, he s played every praccy game so far :huh
-
We have a stronger squad than Hawthorn but it still isn't our best 22 SEN. No Tuck, Grimes, Foley or Vlastuin.

Newy to TV 53m out. Didn't take the shot and his pass missed Jack.
Jacko gets it off to Kingy who gets a free for too high 45m out. Didn't make the distance and it would've missed by a fair way anyway :-\.

Rance to Griffiths who goes long to CHF. It goes over Whitey's head but he gets it to Kingy who cops another free 25m out. Goal :gotigers

First 15 mins very good; last 10 mins crap.
Hawks looked like scoring everytime they went forward in that last 10 mins. We need to tighten up, work harder pushing back and slow their movement of the footy. When we have the ball we need to control it and maintain possession.
Chaplin has been pretty good in his first game in Y&B.
Lids our best so far.
-
Still cant work out the holding the ball decision, Martin pinged for exactly the same thing let go by the umps up the other end which led to a Hawks goal.

Our half forwards need to work harder. We've had a few quick kicks out of the centre being picked off easily by Hawks across half-back.

Tucky is just being rested today.
Kingy has been good. He's worked hard defensively (tackling) and been on in the right spot to have shots on goal. The only thing you could pick on today is he should have 4 goals rather than 2.2.
The other surprise is Whitey. He's been everything so far.
Jack should have 5. He keeps trying to pass the ball off after taking the mark unless he's right near the sticks.
-
Jacko is still Jacko though as judged by that last kick.
3rd qtr has started.

Any danger of Hawthorn getting a legal handball off in a tackle? ::)
When you have tuck in your team you can't complain about people throwing the ball ;D

The problem is the forward kick. If you go inside 50 3,4 or more times and don't score it drags the various lines too up the ground leaving space behind. Still need to work on our efficiency going inside forward 50.
What a joke umpire. Okay it was there but the last 6 similar tackles weren't paid.

We are no good
-
That was a frustrating qtr of football. It's only nob cup but its the same ol, dominate possession, don't take our chances up fwd and get crucified on the break with cheap over the top goals. Our defensive structure gets stretched way too easy and needs to improve for us to play finals. Wtf is jack looking to pass it off every time he gets it?
-
Playing great "dumb" football!
White been good. Chaplin addition will be great for us.
Ellis good off half back line.
-
Inside 50s: 34 - 28
At one stage that qtr we would've had 10 more inside 50s but couldn't kick a goal. It's why we get caught up in these close games. We don't make teams pay by slamming on 3-4 goals in row when we have all the play and momentum. Instead we kick points or make dumb decisions that stuff up chances and then they get a goal or two against the run of play and that's all you need for the momentum to switch and to keep the scoreboard close.
-
All for a good game plan but its hot, players struggling to get a breath, kick the friggin ball long!!! :banghead
Chipping around and having turnovers is just killing us. If we make some of these errors round one the Blues will have 10 by quarter time.

After Lids kicked that goal, Tony Shaw said that's an area he's really worked on and improved from when he was young and a shaky kick. :huh3. stuff me
What an idiot!
Newy's jaw is being checked on the bench :-\.
-
Sheesh
-
Houli has been good today
Have to say some of better players have been very poor in disposal and decision making
Eg Cotch, Morris, Jack
Agree WP. Cotch's disposal has been ordinary today.
Where's the free ump? Playing favourites because it was Mitchell tackled.
-
Rance's kick around the body goes straight to Smith 35m out. Lucky he missed.

Cotch outmarks Populo and he finds Nahas inside 50. Short to Jack and overcooks it to Gibson :scream

Hawks with 12 players out

Back line has lost a lot of structure since Chaplin's been sub-bed out
Very poor 2nd half thus far.. Disappointing

Newman back out there and slots it home from 50

"Lockup" has 15 min to get a touch.
Do it big man!

Newy back on the ground.
TV got his shoulder checked out but he's in the clear too.
Lids inside 50. Jack spoiled but Kingy gets a free for in the back. In board to Newy. Goal :gotigers

Thought Rance made a blue in that last marking contest, didnt attack it seemed to play it too safe
Fox blaming Batch but thought Rance was just as poor

They are more desperate. Winning the 50/50s. We're playing like we don't want to cop any injuries.

Agree, it is, batch just hand balled 1 foot to a stationary teammate

Petterd out there now. First time I've heard his name.
Petterd been on since half time, seen him a fair bit on the telly

Vickery has forgotten how to mark.

Will have to wait for the replay, only caught the last half of the 4th but Petterd got involved a fair bit. That kick to Batch was crap but besides that he seems like a ripping recruit.
-
If we had thrown that one away we wouldv'e copped it for losing a close to Hawthorn's B-side with 12 out.
The only positive is we won another close one. Apart from that we were crap after half-time.
-
Final Score
Richmond 4.1 8.4 9.7 13.7-85
Hawthorn 4.1 5.3 9.5 13.6-84

I liked what I saw dwaino, made a couple of errors, but on the whole a pretty good performance.
-
Thanks Chris Newman!
-
Does anyone else feel like that match was a joke?
-
Reckon Lonergan has no chance of a rookie promotion - disposal is terrible
Think Petterd has earned the call up
Liked Chaplin
The usual suspects and their dodgy disposal were on display
From our good players was disappointed in the games of Morris (poor decisions and disposal), Cotch - terrible disposal apart from the last qtr, Rance - poor decision making and Jack. Poor Jack cops it for being selfish but when we need him to be a kick goals he's trying to pass it off all the time.
Really liked Matty White's game, deserves round 1 based on the last 2 weeks in particular
Houli was terrific, ditto Newman
-
I thought it was a diabolical performance from our team. Where do I start - Vickery terrible today, Lonergan and A.Edwards what was the point of recruiting them? Steve Morris played like a VAFA 3rd division player and if he plays like that on Betts then Betts will kick 7 goals in Round 1. Riewoldt should just stick to kicking goals rather than trying to prove that he is a team man all the time. Jackson was a turnover merchant again today, our forward line structure is the pits. Lucky for us we won with a kick after the siren against the Hawthorn 2s. Terribly disappointing and Carlton are probably thinking that they will spank us and truth be told if we play like that against the Blooz then they will rightfully flog us.
-
Ty Vickery needs some serious mongrel IMO
-
Was the final pass from Nahas to Riewoldt made using his left foot?
-
Lockup waste - maric would benefit if we could play orren beside him, longeran go back to syringeville. Depleted hawks but take a win any day and we were only 4 points off winning all 4 and a possible GF !
Who we got next week any idea?
-
not a fan of white but must say best game he has plays
Cotchin started poor but stood up when counted
Edwards Ellis Houli Newman deledio our best... not in order
we missed Chaplin in the second half and I'm sick of rance doing. one thing great then three things pathetic
maric better as the game went
I don't believe the hype they had 12 out... they had 5 or 6 out. the rest overrated knobs
-
Ty Vickery needs some serious mongrel IMO
He needs "A" mongrel
-
Who we got next week any idea?
We won't know until the end of the weekend when the NAB Cup Grand Finalists are known and the AFL releases the NAB challenge fixture for next week.
-
Are we a chance to make the granny ::)
-
from what u guys tell me. implementation of a consistently working game plan is still required
while the mental distractions are still rampant
-
I thought the worst aspect of today was the dumb decision making. Constantly over-cooked use of the ball and got ourselves into trouble. Our skills were poor, especially by hand but I will hang my hat on it only being early in the season. And I am starting to have some reservations about Batchelor - he made a hell of a lot of mistakes again today and will need to improve sharply to be an asset come Round 1.
-
Does anyone else feel like that match was a joke?
it was a practice match, i wouldnt say they were overly worried about winning or losing. preseason results mean nothing come the real thing.
-
And I am starting to have some reservations about Batchelor - he made a hell of a lot of mistakes again today and will need to improve sharply to be an asset come Round 1.
Agree with Smoke. Batchelor was terrible today as well. Having Morris and Batchelor down back in this type of form is a real worry. Carltons small forwards are going to do us over big time if Morris and Batchelor dont improve in a hurry.
-
Do we roll out the Sherman?
-
Dump Vickery, play Griff in the forward line and relief ruck.
Enough of the so called patience with Vickery, he looks disinterested
-
Yellow you want Ty dumped on pre season form?
-
And I am starting to have some reservations about Batchelor - he made a hell of a lot of mistakes again today and will need to improve sharply to be an asset come Round 1.

Batchelor is a terrible decision maker and a lazy kick. NOT IN BEST 22! Houli, Ellis and even Vlastuin are ahead of him on that Half Back stuff.
Thought Deledio was very clean and dangerous. Everything he touched was effective.
Cotchin did some uncharacteristic mistakes, however when the match was there to be won in the last three minutes, who was that player that put his head over the football and cop a knock? Trent Cotchin.
Chaplin was good and when Grimes comes back in our three tall defenders will be very good.
Matthew White was good and needs to keep using his speed.
Newman played well, though we need an actual "half forward" kicking three goals.
Maric looked slow for some reason and Martin wasn't his attacking self. Was Martin playing defensive wing or half back?
Houli good!
-
Yellow you want Ty dumped on pre season form?
And after being half a season or so out
-
To illustrate some of the obsurd things that go on pre season.I once had a coach who announced before a pre season game that he wanted all right footers to handball and kick with their left today and all left footers to use their right side.it was like watching an episode of TV bloopers out there
-
I'm putting money on Deledio for the Brownlow.
Game was outstanding, especially first qtr
-
Lids was our best for mine today with Newy 2nd.
The main thing from preseason games is you don't want injuries especially serious ones. I'll take today's ordinary but injury-free effort any day over losing a player to a ACL as it looks like Hawthorn has with Suckling.
-
Are we a chance to make the granny ::)
No
-
Lids was our best for mine today with Newy 2nd.

I only watched the 2nd half, but thats the worst Ive ever seen batchelor play, was deplorable in the final qtr, looked slow and borderline uninterested.
Im a fan and think he has a lot to offer us but he'd want to put in a good one next week bc he's one of several battling for a spot in the 22 come rnd 1

Houli has been vsolid this preseason, hopefully ready to step up to bigger and better things

Don't forget Houli is elite. We should expect this from him every game. Was very good.

Just watched the first half. Is this the same White? Been having a really good dip this pre-season.
Also looks like Ellis has been watching a lot of Grigg footage. Similar running patterns and often finding the same space.

Lonergan poor.
Lids mark amazing.
Vickery some good things
White better lonergan.
Hawks 21# throw biggest bull dust I seen... since.Fletcher goal post throw.

Jack generally great.

Yellow you want Ty dumped on pre season form?
It's the lack of intent. Compare it to say Lids, Houli, Cotchin, Dusty, Rance even our lesser lights White, Pettard etc - they may be making mistakes but they are focused.
Ty looks like a poor mans Kosi - there for structure only and knows it.
IMV, he needs to feel like has has to fight for his place.

I understand why people want to see Griff move forward and i even think long term thats where he belongs. But at this point in time both Griff and Ty dont get enough kicks and marks between them to fill a pack of twisites..All these boys need is game time and plenty of it..time will then tell the tale

Tigers claim a scalp
As much as football clubs try to manage expectations by extolling the virtues of process over results, only one result will suffice for Richmond this year – a return to the finals for the first time in 12 years.
Everyone from the administration, the coaches and players are united in their determination to play off in September, and have expressed such feelings publicly.
This if course increases pressure on all at Tigerland to perform, but they know it's time to walk the talk.
In fact, many Tigers believe they should have made the finals last year. Seven times last year they lost games after surrendering the lead in the last quarter. It was soul-destroying stuff.
Their improvement in this area has been one of the most pleasing aspects of their NAB Cup campaign, defeating an embattled Essendon by 10 points at Etihad Stadium and pipping a winless Hawthorn by a point at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.
If this composure remains, it might well signal the end of a finals drought that stretches back to 2001.
