Lonergan with "leather poisoning".

A.Edwards and McBean have been intimidating tall forwards.

Foley will play most of the last 3 qtrs according to the commentators. Straight into the middle for this 2nd qtr.

O'Hanlon - off with an ankle. They don't see him coming back on.

Arnot - blood nose and had his knee checked out.

Foley's kick from the defensive boundary is dangerous. McDonough is pinged for a fend-off. BH thankfully miss.

And then they miss again.

Griffiths long kick in roll out of bounds so it's OOTF. Thankfully BH are missing shots. Third straight behind.

Post by: one-eyed on April 27, 2013, 03:18:24 PM
Coburg too many times stupidly tried to kick long into the breeze rather than running the ball forward and maintaining possession and that just kept giving the ball back to Box Hill in dangerous positions. Hard to find best players that quarter. Edwards made the most of our few forward entries kicking all 3 goals. Astbury did well deep in defence when made the Hawks change tact and look for targets and shots 30-40m out rather than closer to goal.

2nd qtr stats:
Cent. Clear.:  6- 8
in50: 10 - 23
marks in50: 2-2

You said I was a "flog" for saying the game was over at 3/4 time. Scoreboard would say otherwise and I was right  ;). Coburg hasn't kicked a goal into the breeze in this last qtr. Long kicks continually getting held up and Coburg being forced wide.

You said I was a "flog" for saying the game was over at 3/4 time. Scoreboard would say otherwise and I was right  ;). Coburg hasn't kicked a goal into the breeze in this last qtr. Long kicks continually getting held up and Coburg being forced wide.

Goal to BH btw. 95 - 123

No I said don't be a flog for using the breeze as an excuse. Had nothing to do with why coburg were behind nor why they wouldn't get back into the game.

From midway through the 2nd qtr when the momentum of the game changed it was all Box Hill. They controlled the general play and put Coburg continually under pressure resulting in turnovers as we ran out of ideas and any system we had totally broke down.

Big O would probably be Coburg's best (according to the commentators) followed by A.Edwards who kicked 5 goals. Foley was lively in the 2nd half. Lonergan was good in the first half he played. Dea solid and Darrou was composed down back according to the commentators.

Pretty much game over unless the breeze drops.

Box Hill had no problem scoring against the breeze so not sure why it's pretty much game over, don't be a flog

I wasn't using the breeze as an excuse. I was simply stating that if we've wasted the strong breeze in the 3rd (which we did both offensively missing goals and defensively gifting goals through mostly undisciplined and unaccountable play) and the opposition then have this strong breeze in the last when they are already in front on the scoreboard then it's game over - which it proved out to be. If Coburg's gameplan is kicking long to tall marking forwards and kicking into the breeze prevents that from working then of course the breeze affected the game. The number of scoring shots for both sides showed it was easier with breeze anyway. Box Hill kicked 10.14 with the breeze to 8.1 without it while Coburg kicked 10.11 with the breeze to 3.6 without it. To say the breeze had no influence on the game is ludicrous.

I noticed Foley named in the best.
Is it too early to bring him in as a sub?
Someone that could make a serious impact when coming on.

They could give him a half or a quarter against the cats.
Maybe sub him off the week after.

Depends if we believe we have the depth to cover it outside the rookie list. Just from our outs for the Freo game I'd have Tuck, Arnott, O'Hanlon and Foley in before them two

So little influence that both sides combined were only able to rack up 45 scoring shots with the breeze to just 18 against it  ;).

Score with breeze:       20.25-145
Score against breeze:    11.7-73

Yep the breeze had no influence whatsoever  :whistle  :rollin.

You're moving the goalposts again gerks and putting words in my mouth I never said. I never said Box Hill won because of the breeze; I simply said at 3/4 time that it was game over with Box Hill in front and having the strong breeze in the last qtr. You called me a "flog" for saying that even though I was shown to be right. You're the one who also said "the breeze had no influence on the game" even though it clearly affected the ability to score on the day as shown by the number of scoring shots with and into the breeze and it affected the way Coburg played as they had no plan B for the breeze other than going wide and bombing it long.  Anyway time to move on from such a trivial issue.

Stats:

Matt Dea was outstanding with 27 disposals

Matt Arnot collected 28 touches, kicked a goal and had eight clearances

Ben Darrou continued his strong form in defence, earning 27 disposals and taking eight marks.

Nathan Foley amassed 28 touches and seven clearances.

Aaron Edwards is now second on the VFL goalkicking with 17 goals from 4 games.

From BF:
Loved Arnot's game. When he tackles he wants to hurt his opponent, did a couple of massive legal bumps too. Works well through traffic. (Had a little altercation with a BH player on the boundary right in front of me in the last qtr. "you've been an AFL player for 5 years now and you haven't played a game, coz you're a effin fat useless C". Classic by him, has some fire in the belly.

VIDEO: Coburg vs Box Hill highlights ...

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-04-29/coburg-highlights-round-4

Coburg coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed at Coburg last Saturday:

Matt Arnot

Had another really good game.  Picked up 28 possessions (including eight clearances and seven inside-50s) and provided plenty of run and carry.  Also was very hard around the stoppages.

David Astbury

Played an important role across half-back, in his second game back from injury.  Was third man in for most of the match, took quite a few chop-out marks, and used the ball well offensively.

Ben Darrou

Again was terrific down back, limiting the influence of talented Hawthorn-listed forward Sam Grimley, and gathering 27 possessions himself.   His decision-making with the ball was a real highlight.

Matt Dea

After flying back on the “red eye” from Perth, where he was an emergency for Richmond against Fremantle, he was one of our best players.  Defended extremely well and also provided plenty of run off half-back, finishing the game with 27 touches.

Tom Derickx

Competed well in the ruck and up forward.   Had a strong presence at the contests, but needs to mark the ball more frequently.

Aaron Edwards

Once again was clearly our best forward, kicking 5.2.  Could have had an even bigger impact on the scoreboard, if he’d been able to hold on to a few more marks.

Todd Elton

Presented well on the lead early, but failed to impact the game on a consistent basis.

Nathan Foley

Was excellent throughout the three quarters he played, as he continued his comeback from that serious Achilles injury of last year.  Gave the side plenty of his trademark, dashing run through the midfield, collecting 28 possessions (including seven clearances).

Ben Griffiths

Played his full-back role okay from a defensive viewpoint.  Offensively, however, his ball use was not at his usual high standard, and he contributed to far too many turnovers.

Sam Lonergan

Returned from several weeks on the sidelines with injury and was really good in his inside-midfield role for two quarters, before being rested.  Hardness around the contest was a key highlight of his performance.

Liam McBean

Started impressively with two goals and was a really good option for us up forward.  Doesn’t yet have the required work-rate to turn this into a consistent, four-quarter effort, but is looking better each week.

Matt McDonough

Played centre-forward, after being used down back the previous few weeks.  Kicked two telling goals and had five clearances in his 18 possessions.  Close to his best game at VFL level.

Kamdyn McIntosh

Was good in his role across half-back.  Defended well all day and had a season-high 24 touches.

Brett O’Hanlon

Started the game well on a wing, before injuring his ankle.  Will be out of action now for 4-6 weeks.

Orren Stephenson

Yet again was the standout big man on the ground.  Competed hard at the centre bounces and stoppages, winning 28 hit-outs, and also collected 19 possessions around the ground.

Steve Verrier

Played wing and half-back.  Found it hard to find space and was beaten a few times by his direct opponent.  Needs to be more composed.

Have to agree wayne - looks the goods as long as the extra muscle he puts on doesn't reduce his agility too.

McDonough is the player I'm most interested in. His highlight reel was very exciting. If he can learn to crumb more rather than go for the pack mark he could be the answer to the mercurial small forward we have been crying out for. At the moment though he plays as a small big man - leading, marking and kicking goals - won't cut it against tall seasoned defenders.

Dea deserves another crack at it instead of Petterd imo. Love to see Arnot get a game too but in whose place I don't know?
