Griffiths Derickx doing well in the ruck, but we are getting smashed out of the middle. Warren tearing us a new one.... Astbury getting plenty down back.

Repeat of the first qtr. Werribee kicked the first few, Coburg responded with a couple in a row before Werribee banged on a few more in time-on to blow out the margin again.

Half-time

Coburg      3.3     7.4-46
Werribee   9.3   15.6-96

Goals: McDonough 2, Clifton 2, Griffiths, McBean, Carnell

From BF:

Mcbean when given the chance looks lively
Elton strong strong hands.
Derickx doing well in the ruck
Lonergan is trying his heart out. Looks a little slow though.
Edwards very quite. 1 behind very few possessions.

Elton Astbury Griffiths McDonough Lonergan doing ok, McIntosh was given a touch up by Warren. The Coburg listed players just aren't good enough in the main to give us much support.

In fairness the ball has spent most of the time in Werribee's forward half.

3rd qtr has started and Werribee has already banged on 3 goals. This could blow out to 100 pts  :help.

Coburg        7.4-46
Werribee  18.7-115

85 pts down midway 3rd qtr. Six goals to nil this qtr :-X.

Coburg        7.7-49
Werribee  21.8-134

Our own stand alone VFL side can't come quick enough. As soon as Coburg doesn't contain mostly RFC players in their side they become totally uncompetitive. The Coburg-listed players aren't VFL standard.

Not 100 yet flash. :shh

I thought with our perceived depth we would be more competitive at times this year with Coburg.
Questions I would like to raise is whether our perceived depth is a myth and we are still weak at the lower end of our list and the kids are not coming on as we would like or with our reserves reverting to the Richmond Footy Club and not Coburg are the players and the club just not giving a stuff and politically internally it is reflecting with the on field results due to lack of resources which rightly so should go to Richmond because I am a Richmond supporter not a Coburg one.

I know they are our players Al but Coburg are still having some heavy losses as was the case last year.
Blokes like Astbury Griffiths Dea Arnot Elton etc should be pushing for senior selection and add blokes like Edwards who we recruited as back up and the revolving door of Whites, Nahas etc can certainly give Coburg some extra oomph which bodes well for Richmond by adding depth but lamentably it seems that consistency with some blokes is lacking whether they play for RFC or Coburg.

I agree but there were still 15 RFC listed players playing at least playing for Coburg in their 15 goal loss today. 20 were named in the side on Thursday at least about 15-18 RFC listed players ran out for Coburg today that's a large percentage we are not at the epidemic proportions of June July last year when injuries ravaged the RFC and were we're calling on blokes like White McGuane Derickx and co to front up for RFC leaving Coburg's stocks threadbare hence the blowouts last year due to lack of personnel.

This year the injuries for RFC have not been as plentiful thankfully therefore RFC listed players have been able to front up for Coburg leaving them stronger on field one would think or so we thought. That is the second blowout this year. All I am saying is the RFC depth may not be as strong as we think or were lauding given some of the results for Coburg this year. Fair question I would think despite some RFC players pressing for selection in the last few weeks. :shh

Is not freakin depth, it's options.
Our so called depth players wouldn't get a game in most AFL teams first chosen 22 or 26 for that.
However, they are seasoned, afl size and can step in which avoids our younger players being exposed too early.
Teams like Hawthorn, Geelong and Collingwood have depth,  we have options that are not necessarily good enough to play consistently at AFL level.

MATCH REPORT vs Werribee (Round 6)
Coburg website
Monday, 20 May 2013

Coburg suffered a big loss to the Werribee Tigers on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. With both teams struggling to find consistent form early in the season, it promised to be a tight encounter, so it was a surprise for many when Werribee were able to come out on top by 91 points.

The first quarter set the scene for the day in many ways. Werribee took control in the center, Coburg not helped by the fact that in form Orren Stephenson had been called up to the AFL to honor his dominant start to the season. As well as winning the mid-field battle, Werribee's forward line were functioning like a well oiled machine, their big men clunking big marks or breaking packs for the small forwards, who were taking full advantage. Coburg had scarce chances and went in to the first break 6 goals down. McDonough was the shining light for Coburg, showing clean first use and making the most of limited opportunity to kick 2 goals for the quarter.

Coburg showed much more positive signs at the beginning of the second quarter. Winning more ball through the middle, they were giving their forwards a much better chance to get in to the game. At one stage, after captain Nick Carnell slotted through his only goal for the day, Coburg were within 20 points and looked as if they were going to make a real contest. Werribee managed to hit back with a few quick goals towards the end of the term however, and went in to half time leading by 50 points. Key forwards Edwards and McBean were kept very quiet for the half, only kicking 1 goal between them.

Any hope held by Coburg players and fans quickly vanished in the third quarter. Werribee took full control of the match, barely letting Coburg inside their forward 50. The result was an 8 goal to 1 quarter, and a 91 point deficit going in to the last change.

It could have been expected that Coburg would drop their heads in the final quarter of a very tough day, but to the players credit they mustered up some effort and put in their best performance of the match. Edwards finally got his hands on the ball and managed to kick his only goal, and the exciting Adam Saad looked much more promising after struggling in the first half. McDonough added to his goal tally, kicking his third towards the end of the term to finalise an impressive individual performance. The result of this improvement was 4 goals a piece for the quarter, with the margin remaining at 91 points at the end of the day.

Arnott, Nahas, Dea and Stephenson were all missing after having played most of the season for Coburg, and this took a lot of grunt out of their run through the middle - being somewhat a catalyst for the defeat.

Werribee 27.10.172
Coburg 12.11.83

Goals: McDonough 3, Clifton, Mcbean 2, Edwards, Griffiths, Carnell, Saad, Abdallah 1.

Best: McDonough, Darrou, Carnell, Lonergan, Venditti, Clifton.

The Coburg development squad also went down by 32 points earlier in the day. Vesnaver kicked 6 goals in the loss, but ultimately it was a disappointing weekend for the club.

Great that Elton, McDonough and McBean are not only racking up good disposal numbers but have good tackling numbers too.  Dimma will like that, I'm sure.

On the other hand, Griffiths with 8 touches, 3 marks and 1 tackle looks pretty disappointing on paper.

Coburg coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed for Coburg last Saturday:

David Astbury
Played on a smaller forward as part of his development.  Was a reasonable performer, considering the amount of inside-50 entries the opposition had.  Still needs to use the ball better, however.

Ben Darrou
Defended okay for most of the match, but was beaten by his opponent.  Not as busy offensively as he had been in other games this season.

Tom Derickx
His ruckwork was good and he continues to show improvement.  But was inconsistent in terms of his work around the ground.

Aaron Edwards
Fought well up forward considering the lack of opportunities that came his way on the day.  Displayed an admirable work ethic.

Todd Elton
Had some good contests, playing on one of Werribee’s key forwards.  Still needs to work on his defensive positioning, however, to become an AFL-standard backman.

Ben Griffiths
Started forward and later spent some time down back.  Took a few good marks, but, overall, did not have enough involvement in the match.

Brad Helbig
Played through the midfield for the majority of the game.  Was hard inside and around the stoppages, however, didn’t have as much impact as he’d had previously.

Sam Lonergan
Contested football was a highlight of his performance.  Had 20 disposals, including 11 clearances, and six tackles, to be one of our better players on the day.

Liam McBean
Had a solid scoreboard involvement with two goals.  Worked hard throughout, despite the limited opportunities he received as a forward.  Continues to improve his contested work.

Matt McDonough
Played midfield/ forward, kicked three goals, and applied plenty of forward pressure, with six tackles.  Intensity at the ball, and opponent, continues to be a real feature of his game.

Kamdyn McIntosh
Was moved around a bit, due to the fact we lost a defender.  Played a defensive role, initially, before being moved to a wing as part of his development.  His involvement was lower than expected.

Gideon Simon
His pressure around the ball was good, but he needs more involvement to maintain a senior VFL position.

Steve Verrier
