Cotch confident on star duo
By Nathan Schmook
3:01pm AEST Tuesday, July 9, 2013
RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin is "very confident" star teammates Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin will re-sign with the club, and says all terms put to the duo would be fair and reasonable.
The Tigers have been successful in signing up a number of key young players in recent weeks, but Riewoldt and Martin remain out of contract beyond this season, with money reported to be a sticking point.
Cotchin, who committed to the club for a further two years in May, said players needed to be prepared to make financial sacrifices to be part of successful teams.
He said "everything going forward is fair and reasonable", and he couldn't see any reason why the duo wouldn't want to stay with the Tigers.
"It's a great place to be, we've got a young group that have been together now for quite some time and we're building towards something," Cotchin said on Tuesday.
"Every player in the AFL would love to be paid as much as they possibly can, but the reality is there's a cap there for that reason. If you want to be part of successful clubs, then sometimes there's a little bit of sacrifice that needs to be made.
"We're all about spending time together, building something and enjoying the whole ride together."
Cotchin plays his 100th game this Saturday against Gold Coast in Cairns, and the midfielder said he was hoping for an improved performance from the Tigers as they look to beat the Suns for the first time.
The 23-year-old said the players had learned lessons from their 62-point loss to North Melbourne last Saturday, adding this week's review had been forensic.
"When you have a disappointing result go your way the week prior, you always want to come out and prove that you're still playing good footy," he said.
"We've let ourselves down the last couple of years (in Cairns), but we're a different team the way we've been playing in the last few weeks. Aside from last week, we've really come a long way.
"The conditions up in Cairns are a little bit different to down in Melbourne and we're prepared for that … we've had two years of it now, we know what to expect."
On his own form, Cotchin said he'd "love to get a lot more of the ball and kick a few more goals", with his output in both areas down on 2012, when he finished equal runner-up in the Brownlow Medal.
The All Australian denied he was carrying a knee injury from earlier in the season, and said he was spending less time forward of centre.
"That (goal kicking) is probably down in comparison to last year and I'm not giving myself as much opportunity," he said.
"I think it's just a matter of some of our younger guys really stepping up to the plate.
"Brandon Ellis, Reece Conca, even (Nick) Vlastuin has come in and played a really pivotal role for our footy club.
"That's what we ask of our younger guys, to start to take up the slack that's been there for the past couple of seasons."

Cotchin calls on star duo to commit

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin hopes out-of-contract pair Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt re-sign and enjoy the club’s ‘‘ride’’, reminding the pair that to be part of a successful club can require financial sacrifice.
According to industry sources, Riewoldt is on $550,000 this season, and hopes to lift this to $750,000 a season in a new deal. Martin is estimated to be on $450,000 this season, and is keen to push this to $650,000. The pair has been at odds with the club over money.

‘‘It’s a great place to be. We’ve got a young group that have been together now for quite some time and we’re building towards something,’’ Cotchin said on Tuesday.

‘‘We’re all about spending time together, building something and enjoying the whole ride together.’’
Riewoldt’s manager Liam Pickering has said he is confident the colourful full-forward will remain a Tiger. Carlton is one side after a key forward, and would be able to accommodate Riewoldt’s financial requests.
Martin’s manager, Ralph Carr, has declined to comment.
Tigers football boss Dan Richardson reminded the senior players in a meeting before the round-10 game against West Coast that successful teams were required to make sacrifices to help keep the group together. Geelong has been a fine example of this through its premiership era.

Riewoldt wants $750k and Martin $650k? No thanks. $550-600k max for Jack IMO and $500-550 for Martin. You can't expect that kind of money within the limitations of the cap.
And I haven't seen enough improvement from Jack to merit a $200k pay rise, nor Martin for the same pay rise.
If they won't budge then IMO we should offer Martin to GWS to try to get pick 1 for Tom Boyd. We need a power forward, jack isn't strong enough and GWS wants running midfielders.
What a joke...

delist mcgaune and jackson/someone else problem solved

How does Carlton always find a way to pay for every premium player that comes up?
If it's about money then those two can stick it. I'm used to losing so not like it will make any difference.

Greedy pricks.

So they're greedy and it's all about money because Pierek speculates about figures using the the good old "industry sources" line.
Should never believe what you read in the papers when it comes to the value of contracts
Dustin Martin isn't going anywhere, neither is Jack Riewoldt so I don't understand all the angst ;) ;D

WP im sure you have quoted articles before so this is no different
Jack wouldn't be asking for 500k. If you believe that you also believe in the Illumanati. Dusty ditto
Tom Boyd would be a ripper. If dusty keeps pushing id send him over there
-
if martin kicks four this week and gets 30 touches u will be toasting yourself :shh

Star duo? More like star trio! Cotch has forgotten about Choco! We need to sign him damn it!!!!

This isn't about quoting articles this is about believing what the journo has said as being 100% accuarate.
When it comes the media speculating on the value of a player's contract I always have reservations
Personally I have my doubts on the current numbers and the new numbers, that have been reported that's all.
We don't know how much they've asked for either does Pierek despite what he has written and that's my point.
You said "Jack wouldn't be asking for $500k" but how do we know he is asking for $750k? Ditto Dusty. Put simply we don't so I am not going to go around calling blokes greedy based on an article written by a journo that is speculating on numbers.
And why the singling out of Dusty? If the numbers Pierek is quoting are even remotely accurate then Dusty wants less than Jack so why don't we ship him off if he keeps "pushing"
My view is they will both re-sign
Star duo? More like star trio! Cotch has forgotten about Choco! We need to sign him damn it!!!!
What are you talking about :huh Choco is signed for 2014 but has (as most assistant coaches do) an out clause if they get a senior gig

we must retain martin, but seriously why not trade jack to gws for pick one
we must be brave , regardless what jack wants i think we should trade him for pick one and chuck in foley for a second round pick

They won't want Jack with Cameron (a very similar player to Jack) already there and the very real possibility of Buddy coming to town.

Jack Riewoldt says good news not far away for club with players on verge of re-signing with club
Bruce Matthews
•From: Herald Sun

RICHMOND goalkicking ace Jack Riewoldt has reassured fans that good news on a new contract is not far away.
Riewoldt indicated today that he and other teammates would be prepared to take a pay cut to try to keep together the current group.
"Yeah, it's the million-dollar question ... I wish it was the million dollar question, that would be nice, wouldn't it?," Riewoldt said before a football clinic at Xavier College.
"As I've said often in the past two weeks, it's just a matter of getting the finer details (done). I really want to be at Richmond next year and I know the club really wants me there.
"There are plenty of contracts going around at the club, so we're sorting that out. Hopefully, we've got some good news for the football club and the fans in the not-too-distant future.
"I think every football club would like to pay their players as much as possible to keep them there. But it's about making those sacrifices.
"Obviously, over the last two or three years, players' prices have been put up by the two expansion sides and the salary cap relief that they do have. So it's a matter of coming to terms that the player and the football club think are fair."
Riewoldt said the Tigers are not spooked by two previous losses to the Gold Coast up north as they prepare for Saturday's assignment in Cairns.
"With Darwin and Cairns, it was getting used to the climate. Last year was just disappointing, we had a bad three minutes in a game we should have won right at the end when Karmichael (Hunt) kicked that goal after the siren," he said.
"But our squad is completely different to last year and Gold Coast has a more experienced side as well, so we're looking forward to the challenge.
"Speaking about hoodoos, we obviously had lost a lot of games to Carlton before the start of this year and came out and beat them in round 1. So this group is ready to attack and ready to take the challenge of the Gold Coast in Cairns."
The Coleman Medal contender described last week's poor performance against North Melbourne as a "hiccup" and a "wake up" call on the consistency required to be a top-eight team.
"We've picked a few things out that didn't go to plan last week.
"Unfortunately, it was one of those weeks where most of our 22 didn't play their roles," he said.
"We understand that and we know what we can fix. Not taking anything away from North Melbourne, they played some really good football and something that we struggled to combat.
"So hopefully when we come up against something like that again, we can put some things in place to stop the flow. I think they kicked eight goals in 18 minutes which put us out of the game. We'll figure out ways to stem the bleeding next time and get the game back on our terms."

More of the same. Hopefully he's very close to signing.
-
seriously why not trade jack to gws for pick one
we must be brave
1) jack is proven best goal kicker in the game
2) jack is youngish - 10 years ahead of him
3) #1 KPP draft pick is too young to be included in our prem-window. By the time he comes good, if ever Deledio will have retired

Riewoldt, Richmond close to terms
Jennifer Phelan

JACK Riewoldt has reiterated his desire to stay at Richmond and says he understands the need for individual financial sacrifices to achieve team success.
Speaking on Wednesday, the high-profile Richmond forward said he was hopeful the "finer details" of his contract would be finalised soon.
Riewoldt and teammate Dustin Martin are coming out of contract at the season's end.
Money has been reported as the sticking point in negotiations with the duo.
But Riewoldt agreed with captain Trent Cotchin on Wednesday when he conceded personal sacrifices were required to keep the talented group together.
"It's really well understood. I think every football club would like to pay their players as much as possible to keep them there but it's about making those sacrifices," Riewoldt said.
"Obviously over the last two to three years, players' prices have been put up because of the new expansion sides and the salary cap relief they do have.
"It's about making those sacrifices as a player and a football club but coming to amicable terms the player and club both think are fair."
Riewoldt said there was no doubt he wanted to remain at Punt Road where he has played 126 games and won the 2010 and 2012 Coleman medals, but it was a question of sorting the "finer details" of his new agreement.
"[The contract] … that's the million dollar question … well, I wish it was a million dollar question, that would be nice, wouldn't it?" he said.
"It's just a matter of getting the finer details.
"I've said I really want to be at Richmond next year, and I know the club really wants me there, so it's about sorting those things out.
"There are plenty of contracts going around at the moment at the club so we're sorting that out and, as I've stated, hopefully we've got some good news for the football club, myself and the fans in the not too distance future."

My apologies. I was ignorant to the fact there is an out clause. I wish there was no out clause :(
