Jack Riewoldt will move further from goals in 2014

DAMIEN Hardwick plans to use Jack Riewoldt in a "traditional centre half forward role" next year after what he described as one of the goal-kickers best seasons.

Riewoldt, 24, kicked 58 goals this year after Coleman medal-winning seasons in 2010 and 2012, and still finished as the club's leading goal-kicker despite a slightly reduced output.

However, he also led the club for goal assists and ran third in the competition in that category behind Hawthorn's Luke Breust and Sydney Swan Kieren Jack.

He roamed up and down the ground at times and dragged his opponent away from goal, which allowed Tyrone Vickery more room to move as the main target.

But next year, with the arrival of Shaun Hampson – who will free up Ivan Maric to spend more time in attack – and the expected debut of young forward Liam McBean, Riewoldt could find himself in a revised role.

"His role next year? It will be interesting. We've certainly got some forwards with Ty, young McBean we think will come through, Ivan we'd like to get down there at various stages," Hardwick told the club's website.

"We might look at him more as a traditional centre half forward role, roaming across that area, because he's very clever when he does get the ball.

"That way he'll probably still kick us 30 or 40 goals as well, but then he'll certainly help set up some also."

Riewoldt's career has been coloured by his competitive and emotional nature, which has often spilled onto the field when things haven't gone his way.

He's been accused of being petulant and triple Carlton premiership forward Mark Maclure labelled him a "prima donna" in May this year after he kicked one goal and collected 10 possessions against Fremantle.

But Hardwick said the selfless role Riewoldt had played in 2013 had contributed to him registering "one of his best years", and he had taken a "massive" step in his development.

"Obviously, everyone likes to see the full forwards kicking goals and I'm probably a little bit the same but I also love the team aspect of the way he played," he said.

"I've got no doubt the way he played this year made our side better.

"It improved Ty Vickery as a player, [Luke] McGuane and [Aaron] Edwards had cameo roles also and he played a real team orientated game at stages, for example, taking opposition key backs up the ground, which allowed Ty to kick more goals.

"The goal assists and score assists for us is really important and he led the AFL in that category.

"It was a big tick for Jack. One of the knocks on him as a player for whatever reason was that he was selfish but he's proven that not the case.

"One thing we probably missed a little bit this year was his contested marking.

"It was down but probably that was more aligned to the fact that opposition defenders blocked his run a little bit, which is something the AFL is trying to strike out so we look forward to that getting rectified next year."

Should be full forward IMO. Hasn't got the pace, tank or physicality to play CHF.

I disagree fellas. I reckon it will be a good move. Jack is better when he is on his bike moving around. When he's played close to goal lately he gets crowded and ends up sooking. He is a great field kick and very creative. I would say his speed is decent and his agility is good, lateral movement particularly. Tank is the concern but I don't think he would be roaming as far as Richo/Roo.
Free him up.

Agree with Willy Texas

Jack will also take the best defender away from the F50

Jack is a full forward and that's it. If we're not gonna play him there we shoulda traded him to Freo.
Ross Lyon woulda played him at full forward that's for sure.

No he didn't. ;D

Not a CHFs ass. Doesn't have the guts or the work rate. And if we gunna play him there then maybe we should recruit a decent full forward first instead of playing our gun FF at CHF ;D

His not a CHF ass, cant get in front playing FF then how he going to play CHF lol. As l said some years ago. To build a premiership team you need 2 big forwards that demand the ball & are a fullbacks nightmare. Rewoldt is no Disco Roach

You know Richmond's problem is they are too worried about upsetting softy players like Rewoldt & dropping them like Malthouse does if a player has a dummy spit & thinks he knows better than everyone else. That what peees me off about the club. If they don't perform then drop them & bring in McBean who might just be better than Rewoldt. Some players you will never see perform at their peak in the 2nds its because its rubbish football & too slow. Put them in a fast flowing game & some of them are magic & great to watch. Tigers should start doing it in 2014 or some may leave without us knowing how good they are.

So dusty should be allowed to "express himself" off field but jack should be dropped for expressing himself on field? Give me a spell

Rewoldt does more bad things on the field than good some games. He needs to grow up & get on with what his payed to do. If he did that he might find he don't have to cry to the umpires for the ball cause it will be in his hands instead of falling over sooking on the ground while his opponent runs the ball out of defence & we are a man down. Gets dragged & he carries on like a bitch who has no lollies. Yes he can play football but gee he lets his hard working team mates down a lot. If l was his coach he be playing 2nds football & l would put a kid in there who would work harder.

BTW this thread aint about Dusty

Kicked 78 goals in 2010 in an uninhibited way when he played his natural game. I want to see this again.
I cannot understand when we have not got the third forward possie a lock and we don't have a CHF that the coaches are trying to get Jack to play this role. We need Jack to play his circa 2010/11 role and find and or develop someone to play the role Jack has apparently played this season.

Exactly! And I refute Hardwick's theory that we're better off with Jack doing a different role because we end up with more goal kickers. In 2010 he ran and leaped and was an absolute game-winner. Now he jags 3 goals a game max and sooks.

I want to see the 2010 Jack with Vickery and Hampson/Maric doin their thing/these other roles. McBean too.
