I guess like everyone, we rely on the club for injury information but I know that if info is released, it hits the injury update thread pretty quickly.

Last I heard McBean was walking and Knights was on track for the start of preseason which I think are encouraging signs.

How players are recovering from long-term injuries at your club

RICHMOND

Reece Conca (hamstring) The young midfielder is recovering from a serious hamstring injury suffered in the Tigers' elimination final loss to Carlton. He underwent surgery in September and will be on limited duties through November and December. The 21-year-old is expected to progress into full training in January with a view to being available for round one.

Richmond’s Elite Performance Manager Peter Burge updating where Conca and Knights are at:

* Reece is in a fast running phase at the moment and his strength is really good. When he comes back in January, we’ll start to introduce him to some skill work. We’d hope, by the end of January, that he’s doing full skills with the group and, hopefully, in a position where he can play in the pre-season series.

* Chris has been with the group for two weeks now, doing intro skills. We’re taking a cautious approach, given the injury he had, but he’s certainly on track to be doing full skills, probably the second or third week of January. He’s looking really good.

Injury update: Jackson, Maric, Lennon, Dea

Elite Performance Manager, Peter Burge, provides an injury update on Daniel Jackson, Ivan Maric, Ben Lennon, and Matt Dea.

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-03-18/injury-update-jackson-maric-lennon-dea

* Lennon - will be back playing 1/2 game in the VFL this week and then a full game the following weekend. It's been a smooth return from surgery and no hiccups.

* Maric - started running on the Alter-G treadmill. He'll progress on that over the week and then hopefully we'll get him outside next week and we'll go from there.

* Jackson - due to play in the VFL this week. We'll get some game minutes into him as we need to build up his match conditioning before he's right for AFL selection. He's had a good couple of weeks and he's finally back on track.

* Dea - returned from ankle injury and picked up another injury breaking four bones in his knuckles. He'll need surgery on Thursday and be out for six weeks. He'll be able to do running and work on his conditioning a week after surgery when the hand wounds have healed but he won't be able to mark, handball or handle the footy for a period of time.

Rance had a cycling accident causing a foot fracture and is in a moonboot for two weeks. Knights is sore again after his 2013 patella tendon surgery and will be monitored. Jackson should play this week.

Defender Alex Rance will miss two to three weeks with a small foot fracture.

Rance, who was not named in the team, was in the rooms after the game with a moon boot on his left foot.

Wasn't in jest but the exercise was valid:

Rance, who fractured his foot after falling off an exercise bike during a cross-training session in a stuff accident, is two to three weeks away, according to Hardwick.

What the Tigers will hope to benefit from this week is the return from injury of playmaker Brett Deledio and key defender Alex Rance.

Deledio, recovering from an Achilles issue, has been a frustrated onlooker since last playing in the win over Carlton in round two.

"It is tough. From the stands, you see every option the boys should be taking but I have been out there myself, I understand how hard it is. You just want to be able to help. Hopefully, I can do that this week," he said.

Deledio will need to prove he can train and recover without pain if he is to play.

"It wasn't healing as well as I would have liked. It took a lot of work, a lot of strength work to get it back but now I can run and not pull up sore. Touch wood, I will be out there again on Sunday," he said.

Rance (foot) said he could have taken to the field against the Hawks.

"It's all good. I was probably line ball to play on the weekend but it was the doc's call and it just didn't go my way," he said.

Maric (ankle) is listed at still being a fortnight away from resuming, while Nathan Foley (calf) faces a fitness test.

Anyone offering any odds for this scenario to happen.

Play Lids and Rance injured because we panic internally. They play poorly, come under criticism for poor performance and most likely reinjure themselves.

Get fair dinkum. If they are not fit, they can't play regardless if a half fit Deledio is better than half of the crabs playing at the moment.

Doc Larkins says:

Newman sustained a high-grade medial calf tear and the club expects him to miss 5-6 weeks. Soft tissue recovery is slower in older players but he will work through rehab with massage, strength exercises and non-running fitness work in the gym. King is on the long-term list and may struggle to regain his senior spot with a chronic big toe injury. Maric has background ankle soreness but should be right. - 7/5

You sort of get the gut feel that the club will at some point make an announcement that Maric will miss the season, just seems to be taking so long to recover.

The Tigers will come back fresh after the bye and no doubt be motivated by the passing of club legend Tommy Hafey. Maric is close to full training loads after ankle surgery and should be right to get through testing but is likely to make a return via the VFL.

Getting sick of Chris Knight constant injury

Would love to see you or anyone else go through what he's been through and not have a few "hiccups" along the way.

His knee problem was very nasty

Are you suggesting they just send him out there to play so he can do more damage and/or damage it worse than it was before

Terrific, just terrific TM

Rance now in doubt as well  :P.

Doc Larkins says:
A bad week for the Tigers. Astbury may need further surgery after a repeat patella dislocation. In 2011 he missed more than 12 months with the same injury so he remains indefinite at this point. Vlastuin broke the fourth finger on his right hand and needed a plate and screws operative fixation – he will return in 3-4 weeks (with a glove most likely). Cotchin (ankle) and Rance (foot aggravation) were sore after the game and will need care all week.

Knights is a handy player and I'm a fan but his injury history is awful. Another mistake by recruiting.

I might be being negative and its easy behind the keyboard but you roll the dice with this sort of recruiting. If it fails you are accountable for signing him. If it paid off it would have been a nice pick up. But it didn't, Knights will be lucky to play much footy this year. Half way point and he hasn't even played a game this year. Will have played 5 games in 2 seasons. How much $$ did he cost? Thats a fair amount of coin for 5 games.

Daniel Jackson will miss at least one more match with a hip flexor injury.

The Tigers can’t consider Ben Griffiths (hip) and Shaun Grigg (hamstring) for at least the next two games.

Jake King is expected back in a fortnight.

Chris Knight another setback

Another set back?

Think that should read they finally worked out what was causing the soreness, after biting the bullet and sending him for surgery to see if there was a problem and guess what there was

How can you give Knights a 3 year deal when he cant ge ton the park.Sums our football department. :banghead

Bit harsh, didn't have a major injury when he arrived. Was playing decent footy when he hurt his knee

Suffered a pretty horrendous dislocation of his kneecap that caused significant ligament damage. Wasn't a standard knee injury, frightfully unlucky TBH, was there in Adelaide that day

And now after 14 odds weeks of not doing anything, trying to manage it, rest it they send him for surgery and they finally find out that the soreness is being caused by floating bone. Don't think he can be blamed for that

This is the problem with RFC that holds the club back for over 30 years.
Players who are constantly injured over a few years. Clearly their bodies are not up to the rigors of AFL football.
David Astbury,  Ben Griffiths,  Chris Knights,  Jake King.
Players who have come to Richmond with a history of injury or have arrived & spent alot of time off the field. You got to cut loose guys who don't give anything to the club over a period is no benefit to the club or the playing list.
l reckon Knights will retire at seasons end & we have got nothing. Griffith has given nothing & Astbury is the same. Kingy is a player who will give 100% & from over doing it will always be injured or suspended & to me as much as l like this bloke & his courage. If he dont have a good season next year then we have recruited poorly over the last few years.

the days of the courageous hard hitting & guts players is gone. Weeded out by the pace of the game or mostly by the laws of the game & how it is interpreted which takes the likes of Kingy out of today's modern game. It also affects the types of Cotchin who is a known player for diving into the hard contest which the laws are a blight on the game & many are trying to get some of these rules abolished as they are just plain stupid rules. Our great game is under the threat of becoming a soft sport to suit the likes of a former Essendon player ;D

You gotta have faith in your players though. Astbury has shown he could be one of our most important players if he stays healthy. Griffiths has the potential as well. Geelong has stuck by Menzel after 3 knee recos now I think? maybe even 4. I agree with Knights though purely because he isn't good enough anyway. Not worth the hassle since he is getting old now.

These guys were injury riddled before being drafted. Griffiths was HIGH RISK & everyone knew it. Knights well that was just a throw away pick. Would have been better to draft a nodody kid. Footballers are lucky to have a career span 10 seasons. Shane Edwards has been at the club what 8 years & produced how many good game  ;D He is worthless. Griffiths has been at the club a few years now & has produced 1 solid performance. Any Tom idiot & Harry can produce 1 good game at some time. refer to Shedwards. Inspector Gadget gets more out of his body at 40 years old. Brent Harvey produces more of a threat at his age. Brian Lake, can win a Norm Smith at the end of his career. No excuses down at Tigerland.

Would it be possible for the club to be honest about the status of David Astbury's knee?
4 weeks ago he was 4 weeks away and for the last month he's been TBC.

What does TBC actually mean? To be continued? Is there a sequel injury upcoming?

Why can't the club just tell us what the problem is?
