Dusty living with Connors, but Tigers OK

RICHMOND has given Dustin Martin the green light to live with sacked Tiger and best mate Dan Connors.

AFL.com.au understands the controversial 22-year-old has moved in with Connors and his girlfriend at a rental property in bayside Melbourne in the past few weeks.

Connors was sacked by the Tigers in July 2012 after he and Martin missed a morning training session, having taken sleeping medication the night before that was prescribed to Connors.

At the time, Connors was on his final chance with the Tigers, having struggled with longstanding alcohol problems that Richmond and the AFL Players' Association had tried to help him overcome.

Martin, then in his third season, was suspended by Richmond for two matches and, according to Connors, told not to associate with his sacked teammate.

"'Dusty' is my best mate, but I don't think the club is real keen on him hanging out with me,” Connors said in November 2012.

"They told him he's not allowed to hang out with me, but I can still speak to him on the phone. I still speak to him every day.”

Richmond football manager Dan Richardson told AFL.com.au on Friday the Tigers were not concerned Martin was living with Connors.

"We are aware that Dustin has moved in with Dan and it's not a concern," Richardson said.

The Martin development comes after a period of debate around forward Jake King's right to socialise with former Bandidos biker Toby Mitchell.

After Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale said King was free to mix with whoever he chose in his free time, League boss Andrew Demetriou said the club should reconsider that stance.

Martin and Richmond were involved in a messy contract stand-off at the end of 2013 when the midfielder publicly flirted with leaving the club. He went as far as touring Greater Western Sydney's training facilities, but eventually re-signed with the Tigers.

Connors attempted to revive his AFL career at the end of 2012 but was not re-drafted, and will play with VFL club Port Melbourne this season.

Martin has continued his friendship with Connors and was seen watching his friend play in an Essendon District League final for Aberfeldie last September.

During his first season, Martin moved into the home of then Richmond president Gary March, and he lived with captain Trent Cotchin for a few weeks at the end of 2013.

After finishing second in the Tigers' best and fairest last season, Martin said his father was planning to move from Sydney to Melbourne to support him.

Richmond's head of development, Mark Williams, has played a key role supporting Martin since arriving at the club in September 2012.

I was told by somebody in Echuca (Dan from up that way I think) that Dan had gone off the rails with the drinking. I don't know how true it is as its totally second or third hand but if its true then this would not be a good thing. Lets just hope dusty has got stronger and grown up a bit so that he knows what side his bread is buttered on.

Whether we like it or not, this is news worthy. Dusty copped a 2 week suspension when he was living with Connors last time - things were definitely NQR at the time, can understand this being a topic for discussion

lol dusty got a ban because of himself no one else.no one forced that tablet and booze down his throat.

its not news worthy at all. good on the club for recognising the rights of martin and king to make their own life choices. all this having to be seen to be angels needs to cut and put away for good. time for the afl to recognise the comp is nothing but a reflection of what goes on in society. they need to understand   that players are free to make their own mistakes and are in control of their own destiny in these matters.

where i grew up your mates were your mates and you stuck by em especially when they were ib trouble or having a hard time.

Absolutely agree, hes free to make his own choices, but people are kidding themselves if they think this is not newsworthy... and im as cynical as they come when it comes to the media and their nuances.

Fact is last time he hung out with this bloke, he was on a slippery slope so can understand why there would be some angst about it. You are always responsible for your own actions, but the company you keep definitely plays a role in what actions you take. Personally if he makes a mistake I couldn't give a stuff, he's his own man and free to do as he likes and bad luck to him if he stuffs up.

Club could hardly veto this after letting King hang around with his biker mate.

I'd rather Dusty live with Toby than Dan but really WGAF. Hopefully Dusty remembers that we didn't stand in his way last time.

yeah but to put the other side of the coin. if dusty and dan go off the rails in an Ackland st cake shop it will potentially cost the club money, could even be lots of money if a girl and sex was involved too.  Jobs come with certain conditions, doctors can't be drunk on duty, footballers have to watch their P and Q's.  Dusty is a potential train wreck like any number of other players. Hes just a higher profile one so he has to be more careful.

Dusty has spent his whole life being mates with people not ideal to be mates with.

If it wasn't Connors it would be someone else so probably better the devil you know.

FFS - this is what passes for an attempt at journalism ?

Kind of like Dusty, immature, except he makes better decisions when on a footy field rather than off it.
