Bump.
On ABC now. Game about to start.
-
Let's hope it doesn't bucket down (touchwood) so we're not top heavy (we're playing 7 blokes over 195cm). A big chance today for McBean to grab Vickery's spot.
-
Daniel Connors is playing for port.
Grigg and Hampson started the game in middle. Along with #60 and arnot.
Aaron Edwards goes back with flighty bravely
-
Griffiths one cracking mark. Lennon vital clearance.
Plethora of mistakes by richmond players
-
Ex-Tiger Dan Connors is #18 for Port.
Port have kicked 2 points. Edit: Connors kicks their first goal.
Lots of turnovers so far.
Rich 0
Port 8
-
That wasn't touched :huh.
OOTF to Port. Lennon had a ping from 40m on the boundary but it floated across and Port clear. We then give away 50 to Connors to give him a set shot. OOTF thankfully.
-
Helbig makes the knights goal
-
Helbig belts it forward. McDonough comes over the top and Knights goals from the crumb over the back :gotigers.
Rich 6
Port 8
Q1 16 mins
-
McDonough is the only player with a brain out there & half of them are spuds. This team on paper should pump Port
-
Good run down by Waite (on Valenti) gets the turnover and Griffs finds McDonough inside forward 50. Goal :gotigers
Rich 12
Port 8
-
Good assist by Griffiths for mcdonuts goal
-
There old Crackers lol ;D
-
Good run and carry and chain of handballs ends up with a mark on the lead to Hampson in the pocket. Misses
Griffs just took a huge speckie :clapping
Goes the 60m bomb but he misses.
14 - 8
23 mins Q1
-
OMG l seen holding the ball against the Richmond seniors shorter than that. umpires pee me off :banghead
-
Dea is brainless ;D
-
Where was our defence? :huh. A Port player all alone 30m out.
14 - 14
-
pom pom dragged it in there that is HOLDING THE BALL
-
The aimless kick out of defence by Port is collected by Waite who gives it to Wall who hits Grigg waiting behind the contest. Goal :gotigers
Rich 20
Port 14
28 mins Q1
-
Where was our defence? :huh. A Port player all alone 30m out.
14 - 14
That's why Dea is playing this game ;D
-
Hampson is rucking well & getting around the ground well
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.2-20
Port Melb. 2.2-14
Goals: Knights, McDonough, Grigg.
-
Where was our defence? :huh. A Port player all alone 30m out.
14 - 14
That's why Dea is playing this game ;D
It wasn't MattDea fault. Port started that goal from the back pocket. Whole team weak effort tomltmthem do it.
-
the big guy for Port with the hair did he star in Mad Max 1 ;D
-
Any breeze assistance?
-
Where was our defence? :huh. A Port player all alone 30m out.
14 - 14
That's why Dea is playing this game ;D
It wasn't MattDea fault. Port started that goal from the back pocket. Whole team weak effort tomltmthem do it.
It was Dea fault he was just walking with no urgency to get back to man up. Don't matter if its his man or not, The fact is it was terrible defending & he was closet on nobody
-
Stats:
Lennon 8 disp. (7k 1h)
McDonough 7 disp. (3k 4h)
Grigg 5 disp.
Knights 5 disp. (2k 3h)
Griffiths 4 disp.
Hampson 4 disp. (4k)
-
Any breeze assistance?
A slight one apparently to the northern end which we had in the first qtr, Smokey.
-
McDonough has what it takes to be a AFL player
-
McDonough has what it takes to be a AFL player
He should be in the senior team developing in the middle with vlastuin miles and co.
-
McDonough has what it takes to be a AFL player
Has all the smarts and skills to be one. The only question mark is on his pace (or lack of).
-
Tim Clarke spoke well in the huddle I thought
-
Hampson, Griffith, Stephenson and McBean all looking at that spot in the ones. Lets see who takes it. Then lets see who is given it.
-
what you must spin them around 2 times for holding the ball these days WTF :banghead
-
The kick should have hit Lennon but once it hit the ground Lennon should have done better there. Got turned inside out on the wing which lead to the Port goal.
20 - 20
5 mins Q2.
All Port so far this qtr.
-
Hampson, Griffith, Stephenson and McBean all looking at that spot in the ones. Lets see who takes it. Then lets see who is given it.
Griff clearly the best thus far
-
Dea needs to be put on the chopping block & have his head cut off. terrible footballer
-
Helbig's kick floated in the air and Port were able to spoil O'Hanlon and waltz into an open goal :P.
Rich 20
Port 26
8 mins Q2
Getting smashed in the middle. We can't get nor maintain our hands on the pill.
-
Darrou has some niggle in his back, ? back injury or hammy related. any doctors on here lol
-
Well done Dea. please remove him from the ground his costing us bigtime :banghead
-
Bizarre umpiring. Misses the obvious free to Port for push in the back and then penalises Helbig for going for the loose ball on the ground when he got to it first.
20 - 28
-
I think that's how Darrou walks and runs TM ;D.
-
anyone knocks Dea on this thread again and they'll have me to deal with >:(
-
Grigg = Spud terrible delivery from a senior player
-
Finally we get a holding the ball decision. Free to the Arnot 40m out. Holds up in the breeze and is spoiled to the boundary.
-
Can the Richmond players get decent stops on their boots ::).
-
Dea's kick-in goes to a 2-on-1 and gives Connors a set shot 20m out. He misses though :lol.
20 - 30
20 mins Q2
-
Dea again alot taller than Conners gives away a free. Lucky Conners missed
-
If you were a coach MT would you put Dea on the Pine.
Good goal from the Big Griff :gotigers
-
Finally we can keep possession from defence to the forward line and Az Edwards hits up Griffs. Goal :gotigers
Rich 26
Port 30
Goal against the run of play. Lucky to be this close.
-
If you were a coach MT would you put Dea on the Pine.
I've never been a fan of his (not as bad as Jackstar though lol) so you're asking the wrong person ;D.
I'd have O'Hanlon on the bench. Think his time at Punt Rd is up.
-
Some pretty 'soft' efforts out there this qtr. Port going in harder and playing in front.
26 - 33
Lucky they are missing so many chances.
-
If you were a coach MT would you put Dea on the Pine.
I've never been a fan of his (not as bad as Jackstar though lol) so you're asking the wrong person ;D.
I'd have O'Hanlon on the bench. Think his time at Punt Rd is up.
lol l gather Jack is not a fan of Dea well seriously l'm not a fan of his in our backline so maybe Clarke could move him to the forward line
-
Spot on MT we've been really soft. Should be down by more. Elton has been woeful.
-
Poor kick Griffs. Should have kept running.
-
McDonough has what it takes to be a AFL player
He should be in the senior team developing in the middle with vlastuin miles and co.
Agree with you both. Has footy smarts and you can't teach that.
-
Get stuffed ump. It's not netball.
26 - 41
Connors now has 3.
-
McDonough has what it takes to be a AFL player
He should be in the senior team developing in the middle with vlastuin miles and co.
Agree with you both. Has footy smarts and you can't teach that.
Ayres tagged him thats how much he was controlling the play
-
Half time
Richmond 3.2 4.2-26
Port Melb. 2.2 5.11-41
Goals: Griffiths, Knights, McDonough, Grigg.
Woeful and worse still soft. Too many Tigers not willing to put their heads over the footy and win the footy.
-
Stats:
Port had 9 more inside 50s and 32 more possies that quarter.
Lennon 12 disp.
Griffiths 10
Grigg 9
Helbig 9
Hampson 8
McDonough 8
-
Griffiths on form would have to replace Vickery & should remain in the team to be let rise to the next level.
-
Griffiths on form would have to replace Vickery & should remain in the team to be let rise to the next level.
Agree TM.
-
That contest on the wing summed us up. 3 talls fly against one Port, we can't take the mark and Port gain possession.
-
Repeat of the second qtr. Outnumbered at contests and we're playing from behind.
26 - 48
5 mins Q3
-
Both players were wrestling yet it's 50m against us. What was Arnot meant to do.
-
4 goals to Connors ::).
26 - 54
-
Think of the seniors in the first 10 rounds this year and that's how our VFL side is playing today. Outnumbered and second to the ball at the contests, unaccountable defensively and overuse of happy dicky little handballs offensively.
And then we allow a Port forward to mark unopposed on the goal-line when we had 3 defenders on the line :facepalm.
26 - 63
-
awful. Barely touched it in an hour of footy
-
Ive turned off watching them on TV there is not alot of talent coming through our reserves unfortunately. The reserves need a revamp hopefully we draft 5 or 6 kids and that helps the situation.

Wise words from the abc telling some home truths about the RFC and our seconds side
-
Its the first year and we have won a couple. Give it time.
-
Hooray ... we actually scored.
Lennon hits McDonough and Macca goes back and kicks a goal.
Port have kicked 8.14-62 in between.

Wise words from the abc telling some home truths about the RFC and our seconds side
Our depth is poor especially in terms of (inside) mids.

If either of them are promoted it'll be a disgrace. Hampson did okay in the first qtr but has done stuff all since like many of his teammates.
-
Right on cue. Hampson lol :facepalm.
-
Have a shot Griffs. Don't kick it to Hampson again :lol.
Point.
39 - 78
6 mins Q4
-
McBean marks on the wing. Goes long and griff gathers at ground level, off to Williams who misses everything from 25m out :P.
-
Big O grabs it out of the ruck but his quick kick trickles for a point.
Port then run it up the other end with 5 Port players goal side all by themselves inside their forward 50 :facepalm.
And they kick another.
40 - 96
18 mins Q4
-
Typical game where the selectors got it totally wrong. When the rain hit Richmond got hit. Way too many talls who cant get into the game in these conditions
-
Grigg bombs a point from 60m.
41 - 96
20 mins Q4
Az Edwards then gives away a downfield free. Another Tiger who won't be at Punt Rd next year.
-
Thats why McBean dont play AFL :lol
-
McBean is very unfit at this level
-
what a lovely kick by Annott the biscuit for a goal ;D
-
McBean has cost himself an AFL debut today. That last effort was lazy and pathetic.
Griffs runs towards goal along the boundary and unselfishly gives it McBean 15m out. McBean then blindly kicks towards goal not being aware there's a Port defender behind him. His kick is smothers and then McBean has a airy off the ground and then goes again kicking it off the side of the boot for a point.
---------------------------------------
Arnot set shot goal from 45m out.
Rich 48
Port 96
A couple of mins to go before we are put out of our misery.
-
they poo themselves & get rid of the ball in panic. The club needs better coaching for these lads or they are going no where.
Clarke needs to go period.
-
Another good mark by Griffs.
Wynne finds McBean out-stretched on the lead. After the siren and goals.
Final Score
Richmond 3.2 4.2 6.2 8.7-55
Port Melb. 2.2 5.11 10.17 13.19-97
Goals: McDonough 2, McBean 2, Griffiths, Knights, Grigg, Arnot.

Ramps please look at both our coaches for a start as the reason
I don't blame these blokes for throwing the towel in when they see our other superstars getting gigs ahead of them
It's farcical that Clarke still has a job. I mean if you take dimmas words that no players are coming through the ranks outside the "best" 22 then whose fault is it??????
I've had a gutfull of this club and their 9th poo
-
Reckon Griff played himself into a game next week and hopefully for the rest of the season. Im a massive wrap for the talent and potential this blokes got, just does some things that make you think he could and should be tearing it up. Play him ruck full time, challenge him - could still be anything

Two Tigers put up their hand for senior AFL recall
Brent Diamond
The Age
July 26, 2014 - 3:20PM
Richmond midfielder Shaun Grigg and forward Ben Griffiths are among the candidates to replace Ty Vickery, who is likely to be suspended for his strike on West Coast’s Dean Cox on Friday night.
Grigg, on return from a hamstring injury, racked up 21 touches in his first hitout since round 11 and Griffiths, despite only kicking one goal, appeared to be the Tigers’ most dangerous forward in the 42-point loss to Port Melbourne.
Ruckman Shaun Hampson finished with eight touches and six marks but was outgunned on occasions by young Borough ruckman Sandy Robinson.
Richmond discard Daniel Connors may have had the last laugh on Saturday against his former club as the Borough chaired off one of its modern-day champions, John Baird, to celebrate his 200th match in style at Punt Road Oval.
Connors kicked three goals in a tight first half to be one of the big differences in spearheading the Borough’s 12th win of the season to move two games clear on top of the ladder.
Connors was sacked by the Tigers in 2012 after a number of off-field incidents. His third goal just before half-time came after an off-the-ball incident in Port’s forward-50 after Adrian Bonaddio missed a sitter in front of goal.
Although it only extended the Borough’s lead to 15 points, it crushed the Tigers' hopes after they had done an admirable job to hang in the match despite Port’s inaccuracy.
The loss ended Richmond's finals hopes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richmond's Shaun Grigg returned from injury in the Tigers' disappointing loss to Port Melbourne on Saturday but had little influence.
He kicked one goal but was overshadowed by Ben Lennon who was Richmond's best with more than 20 disposals as Richmond went down by 42 points. Liam McBean kicked two goals and former Adelaide player Chris Knights one.

One game closer to finally seeing A. Ewards given the flick...shocking decision brining this bad influence to the club. :banghead
Bring in Griff next week, great marking today.

There is some talent coming through - unfortunately they seem to turn in shockers whenever they're on tv and all the nupty's who never see them otherwise are suddenly all experts and write them off.
Arnot, McBean, Darrou, McDonough & Lennon will all be good players. Griffiths could be. McIntosh & Williams - maybe. O'Hanlon if he wasn't so slow. Dea's ok - I'd certanily play him ahead of Newman at least. Even Banfield, if ever gets his confidence with the ball back, possesses qualities we sorely need.
Stephenson's been our best all year but that's rather a moot point in a discussion about the future.
The others are shyte. Helbig is worst decision maker I've ever seen, with disposal to match. Elton just simply doesn't understand Australian Rules Football. Hamspud -'nuff said. Edwards - just pee off. VFL is Grigg's level.
The main culprits however are the VFL listed players - with the exception of Contin - who's been injured most of the year and perhaps Wall and Luke Conca on occassion, they are all absolutely stuffing shocking - park footballers.
-
So it appears I don't miss much... Watched the first qtr before falling asleep in front of the box
On the advantages of coming home on the "red-eye"... Falling asleep in the afternoon ;D

From the RFC website:
Grigg 30 disposals, 9 clearances, 8 tackles & a goal.

Arnot cant kick, McBean isnt fit and hasnt developed as much as Id hoped he would, McDonough is slow and Lennon is a kid with talent but also someone who in his early games has shown some indecisiveness when it comes to the contest. Darrou is slow as treakle and wont make it, I had high hopes for McIntosh but still seems a long way off. O'Hanlon is also too slow for AFL Footy. Theres not much there if we are being truthful.

sorry ramps I agree with a lot of your work, but Arnott not being able to kick is a myth, is a very good kick and has vision too.
McDonough aint slow either

Arnot can kick, McBean spent half the pre-season in a moon boot and has missed 4 matches, yet is still our leading goalkicker and has started to add contested marking to his game, Lennon's in his first year, had injury and played most of the season out of position, McDonough would be in the average pace bracket, Darrou ain't quick but definitely not "slow as treacle" and, if we're to compare him to a similar sized player who played a similar role, is certainly quicker and smarter than Kelvin Moore ever was.

grigg - hes playing down where he should would not hesitate to cut this glass half empty.
knights - would give a one yr contract in the hope he can have a clear run with injury. thing is at afl is he a mid or more a fwd.
young - imohes a decent supplementary player.
williams - a rookie who is likely to be cut imo has had injury concerns.
arnot - inside mid who is greatly overrated by most. ordinary at best imo.
then theres the flankers who can play thru the middle
mcdonough - still dont get the love for this bloke.
lennon - another i dont rate. i still dont think hes a mid.
look at the list so few and absolutely lacking in quality.
will say again no wonder they struggle with so few mids. trouble is we have other needs just as pressing with our rucks, and tall fwds and defenders.

VIDEO: Match 'highlights' from the weekend's loss to Port Melbourne.

Was a shocking game of football. Stoppages, Clearance, Center Breaks. Totally smashed. Edwards competed at a center bounce at one point. Laughable. Played so many talls. Someone on the broadcast commented that we had to. Why? Half of them were VFL listed players.
Tim Clarks coaching performance was abominable. Could not get the basics right. This is a guy who had Miles in the reserves for half a season and still couldn't get the team into the finals. Thrashed with 17 AFL listed players. Average losing margin 54 points. Should pack his bags with Hardwick.
The Good.
Arnot. Was he tagging in the first? Didn't play ruck rover. Forward pocket. Why?
Midfield was smashed at the contest and we had this guy off the ball for most of the match. He did a beautiful 50m kick up the wing to a teammates chest. Kicked a great goal from outside 50. Split the middle. No problems with his kicking. Was one of few players to show an appetite for the contest and battle when he didn't have the ball. Get the impression the coaching department are trying to kill off his career or turn him into something he is not. We need an in and under midfielder to help out Miles. No one else on the list fits that bill.
Lennon. Good skills. Still a kid.
McDonough. Donuts is still young but doesn't show anything remarkable. Definitely not a midfielder. Good kick but not quick enough for his size.
Dea. Tried hard. Better than VFL level.
The Bad.
Hampson. First half was ok. Disappeared second half. Fitness? Injured? Hard to do nothing for a half.
Grigg. Soft and physically weak even at vfl level.
Griffiths. Has improved to a VFL standard player. Cant measure his kicks.
McBean. Stick insect. Last quarter goal effort. Not good enough.
Knights. Second to the ball a lot. Struggled at VFL level.
The Ugly
Ohanlon. Super ordinary footballer.
Elton. Not reserve level.
Banfield. Terrible.
Stephenson. Don't know why anyone rates him. Slow and non competitive. Not physical for such a big guy.
Edwards. No impact. Fumbler. Slow. Outside.
Hellbig. Looks physically weak at vfl level. No pace.
Darou. Slow. No impact. Big guy - no physicality.

FFS Grigg has to come back in the side straight away, is clearly a cut above VFL

Was there two griggs playing?

Knights. Second to the ball a lot. Struggled at VFL level.
In fairness it was his 2nd game back after more than 12 months out with a very serious knee injury.
I reckon if deserve to be cut some slack
-
Lucky for knights he looks like Lennon and Lennon was good
-
McBean isnt fit and hasnt developed as much as Id hoped he would, McDonough is slow
Sorry but what do you expect a 200cm player to do in just his second season which has included a couple of injuries? I think he's developed above expectations with all things considered but that's just me. On McDonough I can't argue with him being slow but I reckon he's gonna be a good player :thumbsup
-
Agree but didn't want to make excuses for 100 games + player at vfl level. It was very tempting to though.

Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the AFL-listed players performed at VFL level in Saturday’s loss to Port Melbourne:
Shaun Grigg
30 disposals, 9 clearances, 8 tackles
Played a good game in his first game back. We expect that type of performance from Shaun, given he’s a regular senior player in our side. He just needs to work on a couple of little things in his game to make sure the transition into senior football is a smooth one.
Ben Lennon
27 disposals, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s
Found a lot of the ball on the wing. Excellent run defensively and also put the ball inside 50 regularly. Ben is still working heavily on his contested game at the moment and will continue to do that to make sure it transfers into his game and he becomes a regular senior player.
Matt Arnot
19 disposals, 8 tackles, 3 clearances
Played mostly through the midfield and a little bit of half forward late in the game. Was good inside but we expect a better game from him. We needed to match Port Melbourne inside and we needed him to be one of our bulls on the day.
Aaron Edwards
18 disposals, 6 marks
Again was one of our better forwards. He worked tirelessly on the lead, came into the midfield in the third quarter when we needed a bigger body and was able to impact in contests. He’s not hitting the scoreboard at the moment but his work rate and intensity is at AFL standard.
Ben Griffiths
1 goal, 18 disposals, 10 marks
Probably played his best game of VFL footy this year. Crashed two or three packs in the last quarter and kept his feet, which resulted in scoring opportunities. He had a big game and is pushing for senior selection.
Chris Knights
16 disposals, 3 clearances, 4 tackles
Played most of the game as a high forward, a slightly different role to what he’s been playing lately. Ended up with a quieter game by his standards but we expect that he will bounce back this week.
Brett O’Hanlon
16 disposals, 4 rebound 50s
Played across the wing. Had a down day offensively but his work rate back and forth on the wing was what we expect. We just need him to have more involvement.
Ben Darrou
14 disposals
Played one of their key forwards and allowed him too much ball up the ground. Had two goals kicked on him but they were both over the back of the pack. He played an OK game but below his standards.
Liam McBean
2 goals, 14 disposals, 5 marks
Had a quiet day when you watched his game but ends up finding a decent amount of ball. Going by his stats, you’d usually say that’s a solid game but for him our standards are quite high. We need to continue working on his contested stuff as that’s going to make him a good AFL player.
Brad Helbig
13 disposals
Continues his good form off half back. He played a very good defensive game on one of their key inside midfielders. His ball use offensively was the only thing that let his game down. He didn’t get enough of it and turned it over a couple of times, which is unlike him.
Matt McDonough
2 goals, 12 disposals
Played a different role this week playing as a forward. Didn’t have the same impact on the game that he’s had recently. Although he kicked two goals, he didn’t make the most of his opportunities. Hopefully he can have a better game this week.
Matt Dea
11 disposals, 3 rebound 50s
Had a tough day on one of their lively forwards. Got beaten early but then bounced back and played a very strong defensive game. It was hard for him to get involved offensively but he contributed solidly.
Shaun Hampson
11 disposals, 43 hit outs
Very good in the ruck giving our guys first use. Played well up forward and took marks, which is what we expect him to do. Wasn’t as dominant as we’d like him to be but was still solid in both positions.
Cadeyn Williams
11 disposals, 4 inside 50s
Played on-ball for the first quarter-and-a-half then got moved forward. We expect more involvement from him, we need more possessions and contested ball from our midfielders.
Todd Elton
8 disposals
Played a good defensive game. Didn’t get used a lot offensively but he continues to improve as a key defender.
Orren Stephenson
7 disposals, 22 hit outs
Played as a key forward this week to give other guys an opportunity in the ruck, which probably hurt his game. Still contributed, took marks and had shots on goal but he plays his best footy in the ruck so that’s what we’ll look at doing in the next few weeks.
Todd Banfield
5 disposals, 7 tackles
Had a quiet day offensively. Was able to get involved with his tackling and his pressure has been at AFL standard in the last three weeks. We just need him to get more offensive ball, which he’s been working hard on at training.

As per Clarke's comments it confirms that the VFL side is purely for experimentation and not result driven. Playing the big O up forward when he is clearly the best tap ruckman we have is a clear indication of this. The main issue I see is that players are being played in totally unaccustomed roles which for some players leads to disillusion and ultimately poor performance. They then leave and get picked up elsewhere only to be developed in their best position and suddenly we see the player they should have been with us. Think sometimes our coaches get too clever and simply ruin players for good, "can't see the forest for the trees".

No? Really?
Said this before the season started. Not saying it is right or that I agree with the concept. Have just said that our VFL sides main focus is development. Even Dimma calls it our "VFL Development side" (see Jake's retirement vision) not "our VFL side".
