Nice squad. Matt Ryan has been great for Brugge hasn't he?

By and large a good squad and should be looking to make the semis at the very least. Personally I reckon we'll win it.

Disappointed A.Mooy didn't make it, think he's been fantastic this season. My criticism of him was he didn't cover enough ground out on the pitch, his ball distribution is world class but theres more to playing than distribution. I honestly felt he's improved out of sight when it comes to running capacity this season. Reckon he and Antonis are the future of our midfield. Would rather him than Mckay..

Happy to see Burns getting back to his best and get back into the squad, super talent that still has plenty of scope to get better.

If you add Rogic, Good and Rhys Williams to that squad and replace the 3 weakest players it augurs well for the future

Yep, was voted best GK in Belgium last season.  :cheers He's only 22 which makes it a pretty impressive feat. I was a little critical of him at the World Cup, but in hindsight, the experience will be invaluable and has looked even better in recent times.

Excellent. I think I read Langarak has also been getting some time at BVB while Wiedenfeller has been injured. Experience would be awesome.

Where is Rogic? Injured again or not getting enough minutes?

can't wait to see Cahill and Kruse in action together.

Rogic is injured still, had another groin op back in October which is concerning.. Leckie, Kruse and Cahill will cause mayhem up front. Cant wait

There's enough strike power up forward to cause havoc with Timmy, Kruse and Leckie. The question mark is how our defensive structure holds up against the top Asian teams.

Spoiler - ABC TV coverage has only just started.

Aussies won 4-1 :thumbsup. Take a +3 result anyday.

We gave up a typical schoolboy-error goal early but it was all one way traffic for the rest of the match. Luongo was man of the match.

We'll win the whole thing easily if that's the standard of the opposition in the tournament which it won't be when we get to play South Korea and Japan eventually.

3-0 up and off to the quarter finals  :thumbsup.

Great team play for Kruse's :bow goal.

The only complaint is how that Omani didn't get a red for that tackle on Timmy :huh3.

4-0*  ;D

That's about as good as I've seen the Socceroos play. Ignoring the quality of the opposition we just looked really well drilled, disciplined and skills were top notch.

Been watching Japan and they really are a good side to watch. Endo, Honda, Kagawa, Hasebe etc. So many good players. Reckon we can match it though  ;D

You'd expect Spiranovic, on a yellow, will be rested for the last group game.

China should finish top of Group B. So if we finish top of Group A, we'll be playing either Saudi Arabia or Uzbekistan in the quarters.

Is there a sure way to miss Japan until the final should we make it? Provided we both finish top of our groups I don't know how they split the sides of the elimination fixture.

If we both top our groups then we don't meet until the final should we make it.

If one of us finish 1st and the other 2nd we will meet in the semi should we both win our qtrs

Timmy, Robbie Kruse and Leckie rested from the starting XI tonight while Jedinak is still out with that ankle.

Thanks. So the game against south Korea isn't the dead rubber it is being called then.
If we finish top then we'll most likely play Iran in the semi final.

Apart from the score and that one stupid schoolboy defensive error that cost us a goal, I thought we were very good tonight against a strong side that had no other intention other than parking the bus. Really should have won that and come down to Melbourne for one more game - but thems the breaks, if you want to win it you have to beat everyone so lets get past China and then look at japan
Title: Re: 2015 Asia Cup

I think if we started our best forwards we would have had more chances early and got on the board early. We flirted with danger and now we pay the price. Tough finals road from here.

Luongo has been an inspired selection but surely it's time to get serious and start Bresciano.
Title: Re: 2015 Asia Cup
Post by: mightytiges on January 18, 2015, 04:29:10 AM
Another schoolboy error in defence costs us a goal  :scream and we failed to any of the many chances we had. Some people are blaming the Suncorp surface for strikes bobbling up rather than being hit low into the corners but it was the same for Koreans. Our strikers better get use to that surface quickly as they'll be back there to play China.

You'd expect Spiranovic, on a yellow, will be rested for the last group game.

Agree, tbh I didn't mind Burns and juric starting but would've started leckie over Troisi who I think is wasteful. I think with jedinak out, Ange doesn't trust Milligan to play DM on his own so goes with Mckay as backup. Think if jedinak was playing would've started with Luongo and Bresc.. In hindsight seeing the Koreans park the bus, we should've started Bresc anyhow and played 2 number 10's(creative mids) instead of 1.

Apparently, Ange had to rest Timmy and Kruse as they physically couldn't play 3 games in 8 days. The Oman game was Kruse's first full game in about 12 months and of course Timmy is in the twilight of his great career.

Ref is subpar. We need to lift.

Bresc terrible, mile terrible, just getting nothing from our midfield. Need to up the tempo and go a bit more direct against these guys, we're always playing the safe ball and no-one is looking to really turn and run right at them, they're too well drilled to break down with the way we're playing atm.

Take a chance and start overlapping, these guys will crumble

A tale of two halves in a half. The first 20-25 mins we were very shakey. Coughed up ball in the midfield, too many old school long balls and we looked slow and exposed against their wingers on the counter. It also looked as though we had little trust in the pitch. After 25 mins, we dominated. We settled, controlled possession and kept the ball on the ground which allowed us to get deep to the byline. We look most threatening from our crosses and especially set pieces. Sainsbury should have buried that free header. Leckie, who has very good, also had a top chance. We need to take these chances in the 2nd half.

Asia Cup > cricket world cup imo.

Yes a confederations cup regional qualifying tournament for a still up & coming sport's (in Australia) second weakest confederation is far more important than a world cup for our only truly national major sport.

Excuse me? Wasn't the original post lamenting 70k -v- 20k ?

Fact only stadium in Melb that I'll hold 70k people is the MCG and it isn't available because of cricket which contractual holds the rights to that stadium until the end of March. Pretty sure the World Cup Cricket was coming or Aust before the Asian cup (but will stand to be corrected if that's not the case)

So I am not sure how "they" (whoever "they" are) have stuffed up

The other grounds hold
Etihad - 50k
Geelong - 35k
AAMI - 37k

Aren't people complaining that not enough  people can get to it in Newcastle? But you are advocating grinds that can't hold 70k

Yep, doesn't make much sense.

Vic govt didn't want it apparently

yep bunch of nuffers said we don't need anything beyond the qtrs bc we have the aussie open and big bash  :-[

More importantly we have tHe cricket World Cup coming up at the MCG. Far more important to ensure the MCG is 100% ready for that

Harsh? Perhaps but that's reality.

Only stadium in Melb that holds 50k + is the MCG and it isn't available

please

reality is they have screwed this one up. Nothing more nothing less

etihad
geelong
aami

Don't be pedantic Wil ;) DOCKLANDS WOULDVE BEEN FINE

Asia Cup > cricket world cup imo.

Yes a confederations cup regional qualifying tournament for a still up & coming sport's (in Australia) second weakest confederation is far more important than a world cup for our only truly national major sport.

Correct, take out India and the TV audience of the World Cup is a tithe of the Asian Cup. Even with india involved I doubt they get anywhere near the same sort of TV audience. Furthermore, the 50 over format is the least popular format of the game. Most people don't give a poo about it.

Soccer is not our national sport, too many redneck bogans who still think its a wogs game, but thankfully they are becoming less common and the game is growing exponentially. Melbourne stuffed up a massive opportunity pure and simple

and go UAE! lol of all the people to miss penalties Honda and Kagawa. We have to capitalise on this now.

Iran vs Iraq was an unbelievable game in terms of an emotional rollercoaster  :lol

Kagawa hitting the post was one thing. Honda trying to put it over the stand was something else completely. The massive wtf look on his face was priceless and a shame because he has been so great to watch this tournament.

If we can get in the number of crosses Japan did I wonder if we will be a better chance to capitalise with the likes of Cahill and co.

That Honda penalty was one of the funniest things of all time. You could have put another 2 goals on top and it would have still gone over the bar.

Also not one penalty was saved by a keeper in either game last night. Just a whole heap of choking.

IMO we're the best team in Asia now and we'll be favourites to win the final. I know we lost to Korea in the group stage but that was without Timmy, Kruse and Leckie for most of the game as Ange was resting them. The only way I see Korea winning is to keep us scoreless again which is hard to see with our best eleven on the park.

THE one black cloud hanging over Australia’s Asian Cup triumph seems to have dissipated, with Robbie Kruse cleared of a serious Achilles injury after being stretchered off in Saturday night’s 2-1 victory over South Korea.

Though Kruse is still waiting for scan results to confirm the damage, Socceroos doctors believe he hasn’t broken a bone in his foot either, but rather suffered ligament damage in his ankle.

Though that would entail three to four months out and effectively end his season - assuming the initial diagnosis is confirmed - it is a substantially better scenario than the 12 months or more sidelined that a ruptured Achilles tendon would have meant.

Was awesome fellas. When that equalizer went in, there was an audible groan, thought we were goners. Kudos to the boys for picking themselves up and just going right back at Korea in extra time and get the deserved result. Don't know how it came across on TV but the atmosphere was electric, Im still drained today although that may also be the copious amounts of celebratory drinks we had afterwards. Bloody homebush though, its in the middle of nowhere, takes ages to get back to the city
