As the title says - which rookie(s) will get promoted prior to round 1?
Our rookie list
Matt Thomas
Matt Arnot
Jayden Short
Jason Castagna
Ivan Soldo
Kane Lambert

inb4 Miles rants
-
Can't believe it took half a season to promote Miles.
-
Has to be Lambert.
If it's Matt Thomas I'm ordering chicken poo.
-
Wont really know until they are all tried during the pre-season but I would like to say its out of these two:
Matt Arnot
Kane Lambert
-
I'd like to see Kane Lambert get promoted for round 1. He gives us another in/under mid option & he is physically ready to play AFL. By all reports his contested work is top notch, his matured experience shows & his skill level is up to AFL standard. Thomas & Arnot have been tried & we know about their limitations, Jayden Short & Jason Castagna are interesting types but both need time to develop physically. That leaves Ivan MkII ... we would only promote Soldo if he was our last tall left standing, lets hope that doesn't happen before round 1! After round 12, ideally, you would only promote to fill holes left by injury & it just depends on what happens. I would put Arnot in before Thomas if we need another mid. :gotigers
-
Tipping Thomarse or Arnot.....Hardwick will want blokes with AFL experience. Lambert, or any of the other rookies for that matter, will probably have to play out of their skins to leapfrog them both.
-
Klambert
-
It won't be Thomas, he still isn't back from his knee injury and has had no pre season.
I'd be staggered if he gets a game at all this season.
-
I think it will be Lambert. He has been killing it at the midfield stoppages!

Yes- at training and in one intra-club match so far....

if fit thomas and lambert. i dont get the hate for thomas. early last yr when the likes of ellis hou;li vickery grigg chaplin griffiths grimes newman were spudding it up plus others there was no jackson he at least was finding plenty of ball laying tackles and putting his head over it. we scream for someone to at least block for the likes of cotchin he did. ffs he was criticised on all forums
for a 29 possesion, 7 tackle, 10 clearance, and 16 c/p game in rnd one id take that any day with a few turnovers thrown in over half a dozewn chumps who get regular games.it made me watch the bloke a bit and stop criticising him for the sake of it.
i was probably the most vocal person on here when we took thomas just did not want him not with his output at afl level. but ffs he was a rookie pick who came with plenty of baggage who had a decent season..hes a rookie pick who was slow could not find the ball at afl level, poor disposal and had been in the system for 8 or so yrs. im honest i didnt want himat any cost.
but his season was okay and a damn site better than many who cop plaudits around here.
and ya know what when arnot can remotely get near these sort of figures he may deserve a game in front of him.
just like tuck used to cop it thomas copped it for similar things but last yr he was good most of the time he played.. based on the role last yr id keep him in front of at least a dozen to 15 players.
theres a lot of sheep on forums they hear something and they follow rather than looking for themselves.

Good post Claw
From what I recall when just about everyone else was playing with a handbag I can only remember two players who would have a hard crack, Dusty and Thomas.
Sure Thomas is upgrade material but when you stack up how he played against others you would be cutting about 12 others before him
-
With you on that claw

Thomarse was an absolute shyte truck in nearly every game - one of the few exceptions being the GC match where he soared to the heights of being slightly less mediocre than everyone else.

Kane Lambert from R1.

He always holds onto the ball until he's tackled. Why doesn't he just get rid of it. He's a rugby player
Close to worst kicking skills in the side actually probably the worst. The only good thing he can do is extract it if lying on the bottom of a pack. That's it

I'm somewhere in the middle with Thomas. I liked his hardness early on but i think his skills and lack of speed became more apparent with every game. A battering ram can be useful in the clinches, but Miles coming in reduced our need for this . Hopefully the extra addition of Lambert will mean that Thomas has to fight it out in the twos.
-
Kane L for me, I think Thomas makes bad decisions sometimes but he always gives 100%

I agree to an extent, but the problem is that Miles at the hulking figure of 178/79 isn't really a battering ram. He's tough as nails and has balls in spades, but being tough isn't enough. We need players with big bodies and core strength.
Look at blokes like Watson, J Kennedy (Syd) etc. Huge blokes, smash midfields all day. Thomas isn't THAT big and certainly nowhere as good, but his physique is something we need nonetheless.

I still reckon the Klam will get a gig

I agree that we could use a few big bodied mids, but for all intents and purposes Miles plays like a big bodied mid. His clearance and contested possession stats attest to this.
He may not be tall but he's pretty thick through the legs and hips.

hmm so c/ps and clearances are everything .
miles 13 games, 24.38 disposals, 4.31 tackles, 6.62 clearances, 11.15 c/ps.
thomas 13 games, 20.46 disposals, 5.92 tackles, 4 .85 clearances, 9 .31 c/ps. for a rookie pick these stats are sensational. for an inside mid they are very good.
top 7 for disposals, only martin, deledio, miles, cotchin, ellis, jacko, houli had more,
1st for tackles, says it all. it is an area you expect inside mids to have good stats.
4th for clearances. only cotchin miles and jackson had more.
3rd for c/ps. only cotchin and miles in front of him.
what do you want from an inside mid. c/ps, tackles, clearances, and an ability to get a bit of ball. people have the blinkers on when it comes to thomas for a rookie ouick we could not have asked for more yet we got more with miles. imo both were success stories for us.
as long as his out put does not drop away i am happy to have thomas. like tuck as long as he tackles, wins clearances and c/ps, and gets his share of ball i can live with the turnovers as long as hes working on em and they become less and less.
i have often asked, how many deficient players can a side carry i did it with tuck and i now do it with thomas. he has two glaring deficiencies pace but lets face it for an inside player pace is not the be all end all ask anthony miles. the other is his turnovers which is a problem but for me as long as they dont get worse what he delivered in other areas made up for them imo.
overall we suck as a clearance side. we suck as a tackling side, far too many are as soft as butter and cant get much contersted ball for as long as we have al of these types letting us down in these areas i will put up with thomas.
and just to finish people moaning about him wake up to yourselves what do you want a bloke who will have a genuine dip who will always put his head over the ball or the likes of vickery ellis grigg newman oh stuff it you all know the many culprits.
poor old tucky copped exactly the same sort of criticism and i can tell ya all thomas last yr was no worse than tucky he was a very solid contributor who performed a role that very few could.
to finish he was replaced by miles i think he played just 4 of his 13 games after miles came into the team.with the retirement of jackson and even with the rise of miles we seriously lack c/p players which is why the club went and got b ellis and had a good sniff around greenwood, we lack even more big bodied c/p beasts thomas at least has a crack unlike the many weak as pee soft pricks who get a game every week give me thomas over them any day.
-
unlike the many weak as pee soft pricks who get a game every week give me thomas over them any day.
:lol
Agree though. There are a couple that fall into that category that I can think of.
-
Thomarse was an absolute shyte truck in nearly every game - one of the few exceptions being the GC match where he soared to the heights of being slightly less mediocre than everyone else.
mate you need to take the blinkers off im as critical as anyone and thomas was servicable as an inside mid. just about everything backs this up. yes he is a poor kick and at times decision maker so play him to his strengths which were plenty last yr and the yr before that. the other is he he lacks pace, so lets get rid of every player in the afl who lacks pace. his game doesnt need pace.see ball hunt ball and if you cant get it hit an opponent.
tell me what do you want from an inside mid. what are the criteria. what is the minimum you will accept at afl in each area.
me for an inside player i want c/ps, tackles, clearances but they arent the be all end all, and at a minimum 20 disposals a game. the last goes for just about all mids other than run with players. this bloke ticked those boxes and more, and all this from a rookie pick.
-
Lambert is surely now locked in for promotion to the senior list prior to round 1.
-
Met a long time friend of the Lambert family the other day. She said the guy is as tough as a $2 steak and a real footballer. Should have been drafted years earlier. No team can have enough of those types.

I said the same thing when he was drafted - my next door neighbour is from the same district cricket side and they know each other well, he told me from day dot that he'll make our inside mids look stupid, should've been drafted years ago.

Lambert, making em look silly at the stoppages
X2
Is 23 and still has his footy life ahead of him.
Much much cleaner with his skills than Matt Thomas.
Don't make the same mistake as last year Tigers. :help
-
Havent seen much of him..Don is he as hard at it as Thomas?
-
Havent seen much of him..Don is he as hard at it as Thomas?
I believe so from what I have seen. Foot skills are good too. :thumbsup
Him and Taylor Hunt in the side all some real bite add Miles on last years form and suddenly we have some competently skilled mids with defensive skills to free up Dusty Cotch Lids Ellis etc.
I think we'll struggle in the forward line TBH.
-
if we dont improve delivery into the forward line we will. that was pretty ordinary after the first quarter

The next rookie in line

RICHMOND
The Tigers can nominate one rookie before the start of the season to play AFL games, and Kane Lambert is at the front of the queue. A star in the VFL, he has shown through the NAB Challenge he can be a ball-winner against AFL opposition, winning eight possessions in the first quarter against the Western Bulldogs. Anthony Miles was a rookie revelation last year and he has backed Lambert to take the same path in 2015. If successful in emulating Miles, the 22-year-old, who was recruited from Williamstown, will add the depth so far missing in Richmond's engine room. – Nathan Schmook -

How come we only get one this year when usually we get two? Did we take more players on the list proper?

Yep when Port flooded back in def mode it hard for us to score, it's where a pack splitter would come in handy instead of having Ty float/fall/get pushed away from the contest

Kane to press for upgrade
richmondfc.com.au
March 20, 2015 3:09 PM
Richmond has one vacant spot on its senior playing list, which can be filled by a rookie ahead of next Tuesday's deadline.
After impressing in the opening two pre-season challenge matches, mature-age recruit Kane Lambert appears poised for promotion if he performs well against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Kane Lambert poised to be promoted from Richmond rookie list

Herald-Sun
March 20, 2015 4:46PM
RICHMOND midfielder Kane Lambert is poised to finally earn a place on an AFL senior list.
Lambert, a standout against the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide in the NAB Challenge, is the only rookie-listed player named in the Tigers squad for the last game against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers can promote one rookie if they choose before the league’s deadline next Tuesday afternoon and the 23-year-old, who excelled with VFL clubs the Northern Blues and Williamstown after being overlooked in previous drafts, has the front running.
“He has been really impressive. He’s a mature-age prospect, so we always expected him to be a little further advanced than our first-year players. But the way he has attacked his training and the way he has fitted into the club has been outstanding,’’ Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.
“We’ve got some rookie elevation decisions to make by next Tuesday and he’s putting his hand up, as is Matt Thomas, Matt Arnot, these type of players,’’ Hardwick said.
Thomas and Arnot, along with injury-restricted forward Chris Knights, will play with Richmond’s VFL team in a practice match at Geelong on Saturday.

Lambert will most likely still be promoted but I think he just cost himself a round 1 spot today.

Reckon he is still a good chance for round 1
would say a few others played themselves out of the side today before Lambert
-
To be honest would rather play a bloke like Butler if you wanted a forward and Arnott if you were after a mid.
-
dont have a problem if lambert has to go back and string together a number of solid VFL games before he gets his chance
-

What if you want one that can do both? Butler won't get near it in his first season either
-
Arnot should be first cab off the rank, followed by Lambert, then Butler, then George Costanza. Thomarse can GTFO.

Given Butler is already on the senior list he might be a little annoyed about that.

Yeah my mistake... it was 3 am.....in another thread I had Ryan Bastinac playing in our VFL side.

Tigers promote rookie Lambert
richmondfc.com.au
March 23, 2015 5:54 PM
Richmond has elevated rookie Kane Lambert onto its senior playing list for the 2015 season.
Lambert won the spot after featuring prominently in the Tigers’ pre-season campaign, since arriving at the Club with pick 46 in the 2014 Rookie Draft.
The 23-year-old staked his claim for senior list elevation with 15 disposals and eight tackles against the Western Bulldogs last month, and followed up with 12 disposals and a goal in the win against Port Adelaide two weeks later.
Sign up as a Richmond member for the 2015 season
He won 10 possessions and kicked a goal against North Melbourne last weekend.

Should have been done earlier FFS when will the RFC learn

You would have to think he is a serious chance for round 1 now, otherwise why not wait and see who starts the year well?

Thought clubs could only elevate rookies before round one and after round eleven, unless they're covering for an LTI listed player?

Don't tell me the RFC did it wrong, stuffing typical of this joke of a club
-
That may well be right, maybe the other elevations are only because of long term injuries.

tear it up Kane, great work! - just spoke with my next door neighbour who knows Kane well - says he is bloody pumped! Is burning to play rnd 1.

"He's been really impressive," Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said.
"He's a mature-age prospect, so we always expected him to be a little bit further advanced than our first-year players.
"The way he's attacked his training, and the way he's fitted into the club, has been outstanding."
....
"I just want to improve every day. I always (knew), at the back of my mind, what I could achieve being a full-time footballer, and now I'm here I'm just trying to make the most of every opportunity," Lambert said.
"This is a great opportunity for me to be able to show what I can do, and I’m really looking forward to it."
