Saturday 1:10 PM
Etihad Stadium
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fans able to double-up at Etihad on Saturday

FANS attending either of the two NAB Challenge games at Etihad Stadium on Saturday will be allowed free access to the other match under a two-for-one offer announced by the AFL.
Richmond and North Melbourne will kick off the double-header at 1.10pm AEDT before the Western Bulldogs take on Collingwood, with the second game starting at 7.10pm.
The League announced on Monday that members or ticket holders attending one of the games are eligible to receive free access to the other.
AFL and club members will be able to access the offer by scanning their membership card into the venue for both games, while fans with a daily ticket to either game will need to present it (along with proof of purchase) to ticket booths at the ground to receive the free pass.

Must win game

N0rf's' boot studders won $2 from tatts scratchies circa 1987 milestone game

Ok I know these are only practice matches, but the real stuff aint far away.
Norths had our measure for a mighty long time and reckon a win will be a real confidence boost mentally goiung into this season.
And for this reason alone IS a must win game.
YEAH

yeah I agree, from memory they've beaten us even in the last few nab cup games.
I get the feeling the Tigers don't like playing there :(

What's the go with NAB cup games?
Does a membership get you in?

Will be relying on MT's play by play call since I'll be up north for a funeral.

Can't we start getting disappointed from round 1?
Not sure I want that to extend to a 28th week

Come on HRT we're a hardy lot. What's an extra week of punishment given the malaise has entered a 33rd successive year?
Here's my summary come Saturday.
We'll beat Nought in general play but the umps will destroy us. They'll be gifted a few charity cheapies goals to Petrie, Harvey and Wells the usual suspects and we'll lose by less than a kick missing a guilt edge chance that falls to a Grigg, Titch or Vickery just so we can come away saying we have to beat them sooner or later and have the hope carry on for a little longer. It's the law if averages, we are good enough.
The elongated life of a RFC fan in one paragraph.

NAB Challenge: What your AFL club needs to gain from final fixture
Adam Baldwin
Herald-Sun
March 18, 2015 3:41PM
WHILE debate has raged over the merits and length of the pre-season, with just one match remaining before the season proper, it will be on for young and old in week four of the NAB Challenge.
So, after more than five months of training, an intra-club and two NAB Challenge matches, where is your club at?
RICHMOND
After thumping a depleted Port Adelaide, Damien Hardwick will be desperate to get a gauge on his sides progress against the Kangas on Saturday afternoon. Hardwick says his list is stronger and healthier than this time last season and with Sam Lloyd, Ty Vickery and Ben Lennon firing against the Power, hes got selection headaches. However, captain Trent Cotchin is no certainty to play as he manages a hamstring injury and Chris Newman is still on track for Round 1 despite a heart scare. Richmonds ability to win the contested footy and transition from defence was a big factor in its hot finish to the season and this will come under the microscope against a top-four fancy. Another strong performance from Kane Lambert could see him win elevation off the rookie list.

Tigers to feature in shot clock trial
Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
March 18, 2015
Richmonds pre-season challenge match against North Melbourne this Saturday will be one of five games to feature a 15-second shot clock for players shooting at goal.
A player's set-shot time will count down on the venue's scoreboard, with a clock appearing when the controlling umpire gives the player his 15-second warning.
It will disappear when the player starts his approach, with the umpire calling time on as normal once it reaches zero.
Players will still have a total of 30 seconds to take their set shot before play on is called.
The shot clock is one of a number of initiatives being tested at Etihad Stadium before the start of the season, which will improve "interaction and understanding of the game" for supporters.
As well as the countdown clock, fans at Etihad Stadium for this week's matches will hear umpire explanations of free kicks and score reviews.
The free kick explanations will be broadcast during scoreboard replays, while the umpire's verdict during score reviews will be broadcast on the ground's PA.
The League will trial a new positioning of the Etihad Stadium roof for the Saturday match involving the Tigers and Bulldogs and the Sunday twilight clash between Carlton and Geelong.
At the end of the pre-season challenge, clubs, players and fans will be consulted for stuff on the trials, which won't be rolled out at other venues this pre-season.

Because that'll really improve the game as we know it.
It's gorgeous how they do it tho.

Cotchin playing this weekend according to a 3aw news update.
Would prefer we didn't risk him

He will probably do well with the match fitness, maybe play a half only.
-
He will probably do well with the match fitness, maybe play a half only.
Yeah was thinking the same thing
Or may just play 10 mins per qtr - which equals just over a half of footy
-
Might just run around and handball it instead of risking the kick.
BTW in what world was Vickery firing last week :lol

Griffiths looking very confident.

Petrie first goal ::).

NM 6
-
Delivery to Petrie marks unopposed. Goal north.
-
Grigg gives his opponent too much space
-
7 kicks to us at 43% :P.
North at 83%.
Goldstein beats Maric at the centre bounce. Gets it to Swallow for a running supergoal. Too easy.
North go forward again. Free to Thomas and another goal to them.
R 1
NM 21
Shot clock a waste of time. Thomas was over the 30 sec mark when he kicked it.
-
That was not a free
-
Finally go forward via Griffiths and Grigg. Lennon slips over and it's a ball-up.
North clear too easily again. Rance held getting back but no free. North goal.
R 1
NM 28
One way traffic so far.
-
There is no defensive pressure
-
Houli good spreading kick to space. McIntosh kicks to Jack and he gets a free 45m out. Goal :gotigers
Finally!

NM 27
-
Lmao
-
There is no defensive pressure
Like last year's 3rd quarter.
Getting smashed at the centre clearances.
-
Courageous work by Conca. Off to Chaplin goes to Morris and it's spoiled out of bounds at HF. Cotch grubber gains territory and a throw-in at 50. Hunt to Grigg to the top of the square. Griffiths tap down to Edwards and cleverly tapped back to Griffs for a goal :gotigers
Rich 13
NM 27
-
Oh beutiful , they're been practicing that at training :clapping
-
Great work Griff and Edwards
-
Yaaaaaay
-
Chaplin kicks out to Rance undecided finds Ellis. Goes across to McIntosh at HB. Back to Chaplin. Short back to McIntosh. Not going anywhere. SHort to Ellis. Finds Grimes on his own still across HB. Bold kick to Houli. Picked up by Grigg but straight to Goldstein :scream. Poor kick but North regains possession still and gets it down the ground to Petrie.
That sums up our lack of movement with the ball and defensive pressure without it.
Petrie with a shot (on Grimes :huh3) but misses.
13 - 29
-
Grigg to Jack too far out. Deep kick. Ellis snaps at an open goalsquare but misses.
Lids cuts off the kick-in. But slices his 60m kick. No score.

Groundhog Day.
Shitmen
-
They want it more.
Another rebound supergoal to North.
14 - 38
-
Shaun Higgins to quick for McIntosh
-
Still too many basic errors, and players who look scared.
-
Forward doesn't function when Jack plays high close at HF. He's kicking deep to smalls because the other talls are out of position.
No defensive pressure. Another easy supergoal to them.
14 - 47
-
Grigg nice kick to Cotch. Finds Lids 52m out. Has to go back because Griffiths was still running down to the square.
Lids kicks it anyway. Our first supergoal :gotigers
Rich 23
NM 47
Lids our best so far. 3 inside 50s himself and 3 marks.
-
Murdered in the ruck
-
Making us look like fools
-
Pathetic defending to allow a mark that deep from a set play.
North have scored 10 times from just 14 entries :P.
23 - 53
-
Quarter time
Richmond 1.2.2-23
North Melb. 3.4.3-54
Supergoal: Deledio
Goals: Riewoldt, Griffiths
Just a replay of every game we've played against North at Etihad :scream.
-
stuffn give up boys.
Pathetic club.
-
LMFAO 5 goals down at quarter time.
Had more of the ball too.
There is so little defensive pressure on their mids and fwds. it's like water down a pipe.
Vickery with just 1 handball to his name ::)
-
Practice game and we're treating it as one. Smashed in the centre clearances (Goldstein on top of Maric); no defensive pressure and poor workrate; slow movement as we only get our hands on the ball in our defence allowing North to play their usual counterattack gameplan with numbers behind the ball in the defensive half; delivery into the forward line is poor and wide anyway as there's no space and our forwards are outnumbered 1-2 & 1-3.
-
"Skills have been atrocious by the Tigers. They can't hit a target" - KB.
-
Lids to Dusty who goes deep. No one there but it bounces through for a supergoal :gotigers
Rich 32
NM 54
-
That's better Benny (hip and shoulder).
The Morris experiment up forward isn't working.
Jack goes to Morris who wasn't ready for it. Jack goes and gets it and hands to McIntosh for a goal :gotigers
Rich 38
NM 54
-
You can see North are anticipating our ball movement and are lining up before the ball even before our inside 50 kick. They are backing themselves to not hit a target.
Poomen
-
Chaplin to Cotch to Ellis back to TV but he's wrapped up and it's turned over. They run it down for a goal.
38 - 60
-
Lids to Ellis to Cotch just inside 50. Waits and chips it Jack 45m out. Misses.
Rich 39
NM 60
-
TV has been a liability so far. 1 handball and no defensive pressure
-
Too easy. Second time in a row their mids take a contested mark that opens up the play for them. This time Ziebell to big and strong for Grigg.
39 - 66
-
Vickery again doing his best to not be involved.
-
Bad turnover by North. Jack gets it and Benny Griffiths marks. But he misses badly :P.
40 - 66
-
Vickery again doing his best to not be involved.
He's stuffed in the head
-
Dal Santo one-on-one with Chaplin :huh.
Bad turnover by us but they kick the goal.
40 - 72
-
Defence no where today.
-
How many bloody mistakes can a team make. Nothing has changed as far as I can see.
-
They can't miss either from any distance while we've stuffed up gettable shots this quarter.
4th supergoal to them.
40 - 81
-
See Vickery jog along side the contest instead of chasing down the tackle?
He's not interested
-
That wasn't a supergoal apparently.
Morris free. Having a shot. Misses ::). Third straight set shot miss by us :scream.
41 - 78
-
Might have a record score kicked against us today. Defence working great, have we been training. Morris fumbles too much
-
Didn't like King in the 'King' role, don't like Morris there either.
-
TV with a set shot. And he misses as well. 4th straight miss :banghead.
42 - 78
-
Vickery actually applies some pressure and forces his own turnover. Gtes it to Lids who kickes forward. Ends up a stoppage. Cotch finds Jack. Goal :gotigers
Finally a set shot kicked.
Rich 48
NM 78
-
Stop of play.
Rance has accidentally knocked out Ziebell. Ziebell went to tackle and his head ran into Rance's elbow. Stretcher out.
-
They can't miss either from any distance while we've stuffed up gettable shots this quarter.
4th supergoal to them.
40 - 81
There's the 41.
Now they need just protect the lead. LoLo.ol
-
Lids to Titch. Griffs dives for the mark but can't grab it. Throw in. Lambert to Grigg to top of the square. Griffs snaps a point.
49 - 78
-
Griff getting involved. I like it
-
Chaplin hits Lambert back poor kick. Grigg picks it up. Griffs now to Jack but pinged for throw to Griffs.
We gets it back through Lids to Jack but it's touched through.
50 - 78
-
Grigg free to Lambert (makes up for his previous poor kick) to Lennon just inside 50. Goal :gotigers
Rich 56
NM 78

Well done Lennon

Good work by Dusty. Lucky bounce favours McIntosh to Houli who hits Jack. Goal :gotigers

Ellis to Griffiths but the siren goes as he goes inside 50 and before Cotch marked it.
Half-time
Richmond 1.2.2-23 2.6.8-62
North Melb. 3.4.3-54 3.8.4-79
Supergoal: Deledio, Martin
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Griffiths, McIntosh, Lennon
-
Go Griff!

Trivia:
This is now the highest scoring first half (141 points) of any official AFL preseason match on record. The previous high was the 1992 semi-final (138 points) between Geelong (7.5.47) and Hawthorn (14.7.91).

41 again
-
11 scoring shots to 5 that quarter. If only we kicked straight :scream.
Lifted workrate around the contests and started to get some midfield control and use the ball better (itcouldn't get any worse early), which is why we are back into the game. Dropped off again midway of the 2nd qtr as we missed gettable shots and North nailed their chances. Ziebell going off has helped. All Tiges in the last 6 or so minutes.
Jack has been excellent. Forward line works best with Jack close to goal. Still needs a better support cast. Griffs improved in that 2nd qtr but the rest TV and the smalls have been non-existent.
-
Lennon is a magnificent finisher.

Without the supergoal stuff, it's 11.12 to 15.6 ::).

Alex Rance and Troy Chaplin have each recorded game-high six intercept possessions for the Tigers. In 2014 Rance averaged eight intercepts per game, making him the #1 ranked player in this metric in the league.

Three tall forwards didn't work (again)
:cheers
-
Norf were having a red hot dip today with there best team and they only won by 14 points. I thought there was a lot to like for us today. Griffiths is way in front of Vickery for the 2nd tall forward spot, I wouldn't play Vickery against Carlton, Id rather Lloyd play coz he will kick 2 or 3 goals, McIntosh did some nice things in the first half but still needs more time, If Knights is fit Id play him in R1 on a half forward stuff, thought Lennon was good at his role today, if we can limit our mistakes in defensive 50 we will slaughter Carlton in R1. Bj will probably be unhappy but that's just the truth of it all ;D

The club are way behind in this field.
Ivan will suffer this year.

How many dud kicks did Cotchin do?
Not as many as Martin.
We just wern't clean with the footy, our disposal across the board was pathetic.
Just shows what happens to our game plan when the opposition puts on a bit of pressure.
I'm not sure how long we're going to persevere with Morris in the forward line but if he doesn't start converting goals it's going to be compleat waste of time....
-
The emancipation of Steve Morris from defensive restriction is due to ZERO OPTIONS. ...but we're gonn b top four this year ....somehow.
-
Vickery couldn't possibly play Round 1 either
Useless today

Best thing - no injuries!
+10000000000. The most important thing to come out of the game today.
Cotch got through 3/4ers fine and will be right for round 1.
Miles to comeback into the midfield for round 1.
Losing today should at least mean we'll go into round 1 not thinking it's just going to all happen like we did at the start of last year after a couple of big preseason wins. You don't win too many games losing all the possession, contested footy and clearances counts, applying little team pressure for large potions of the game, the whole team applying just 40 tackles (less than 2 per player), and missing so many gettable shots at goal. Add on top of that giving away twice as many free kicks.
-
Apart from that 10-15 minutes of utter rubbish in the 1st qtr it was pretty much even after that.
There were some good signs, a few things that were clearly settled but also a few things that need massive work between now and round 1
Thought McIntosh was good again, lot to like, just looks and plays like a footballer. Thought Edwards was good in patches.
Really impressed with Jack today, was just fantastic. Ditto Lids his leadership directing the young blokes was first rate.
The one thing that should be settled after today is this nonsense of 3 talls up forward. For us it just doesn't work. There is no point trying it anymore. Seriously I don't think Vickery knows or is willing or adjust to it.
The Morris experiment isn't working either, not enough goals or score involvements. Throw in that today what is supposed to his strength (defensive pressure) was poor then there are reasons to concerned
I know it is only Ben Lennon's 2nd season but I hate seeing blokes no matter what age or how long they've been playing not attacking contests or going for the ball. Sadly, again today he stood back a few times when he just had brace for contact and go after the ball. His kicking is excellent but he needs to be prepared to win his own footy
We need to a lot of work on our disposal. Today proved (again) that when under pressure our skills can be just shambolic

Yeah. God forbid we are ever the team to win by two goals and look like a top 4 finisher. That would be asking for too much.
So it's ok everybody. 7th to 12th is where we should accept as being our lot in life

Lol get with the program dude , the only thing missing out there was the deck chairs and the pina colada we were that relaxed. We were in praccy mode , NM were full throttle and there was 2 straight kicks in it...cotch has like 23 possies in 2 q , like stuffen whoa man , that side can play, make no mistake :shh
-
I'm still confident that we are going to do a real number on Carlton in a few weeks.
This is the round 1 we have been waiting for.

Don't think the three forwards work ?
Ivan would be very clean tonight
Was given a bath today, especially in centre clearances
Agree with both of these comments jack.

5. Definitely yep, back to the 2's and only come back in case of an emergency.
6. Yep, backline or bye bye.
7. Still has time on his side but we're watching...
8. Yep but so was every other team's disposal. Let's judge after R1.

Went to the game today, some random observations:
Etihad is a pooheap. Terrible place to watch footy, genius move to just open half the roof meant only half the ground was unwatchable.
I reckon Maric is in serious trouble. Is a one-trick pony and has been found out. Stay off him and leap and use his man around the ground because he is limited mobility wise.
Last 3 quarters were generally ok, given the limitations of the structures we were using.
Liked the signs our good players are showed, Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt, Rance all showed enough to say they will be in good nick for the season.
The three forwards just don't work, for a few reasons, but not least of all the way we move the ball in. We could have Dunstall, Carey and Ablett up there and they would struggle at times. Not having a dangerous small forward that can get at the fall of the ball doesn't help either. Someone should probably politely point out to Damien that he tried this last year and it didn't work then either.
All Morris as a defensive forward is doing is hurting our defence. We are gaining nothing from it and can't cover the job he did quite well. The match-ups just looked awful today and we look out of balance. Someone again needs to politely point out to Damien that he is a tactical minnow, and as much as he wants to be Alistair Clarkson, all his so called innovations inevitably add up to nothing and do more harm than good. He should aim to maintain the status quo and let Bomber innovate next year.
On the Vickery/Griffiths debate, I thought both had good and poor patches in the game. Vickery is certainly miles ahead in what he does off the ball. Neither were helped by our set-up or ball use today but Griffith took the points.
One other one to finish on. pee poor not to have black armbands on today and our coaching staff dressed in shorts and runners and looked like they were taking a training session. North coaches were in slacks and shoes and the look was far more professional.
It just looked like an unprofessional, untidy club today and that was largely the tone of the play as well.
-
One other one to finish on. pee poor not to have black armbands on today ....
Think you will find they will be wearing black arm bands in round 1, which IMHO is the right place & right time
-
Fair summation of the game though, TBR.
-
Fair to say we were experimenting with 3 talls down back and forward , can't take all 3 of astbury TV and bg in. for mine lloyd and a fit Knights would be a better forward line than a three man forward line.
Morris is a back pocket plumber , too often his stuff ups completely to unravel a decent passage of play. He could have salvaged an ordinary day at the office with 2 goals but never looked like it
Bg was getting to the contests , I'm hoping it was a lack of touch seeing first game that stopped him from clunking more than his share coz he grassed plenty
We moved the ball well though and as mentioned , our engine room is in good nick which puts us in a good position for season proper
-

The morris move to half forward has been a move aimed at minimizing opposition run from half back and I expected him to line up on yarran in r1 but morris is struggling so I would place Hunt on Yarran in a tagging role in R1 and move Morris back to the defense. someone said that Maric has been found out, have to agree that it looks like that but he is our best ruck by a million miles, so we have to make do and we need to trade for a ruckman next year I reckon. And boy do we need a speedy forward pocket, hopefully Butler comes through for us.

Maric hasn't been found out , Goldstein who incidently is an AA ruck did a number on him, he s better than that, will beat most and break even at worst with others , don't underestimate him :shh

Yeah. God forbid we 'incidently' have an AA ruck ourselves. But it's ok, we'll break even against average rucks with whatever we have on the list that we have recruited.
Gotta love breaking even. Hooray for mediocrity and don't underestimate it.
Whoa, awesome RfC. #breakingevenisthenewbenchmark
-
I agree with bj, no shame getting beaten by Goldstein whose nigh on the best ruck in the comp. Doesn't mean Ivan is finished, moving better than he has for 2 years, he'll come back harder when the real stuff starts
-
wizard cup. lol
cant believe people are claiming ivan is finished, and grigg should be a lock for round 1 based on some good wizard cup performances.

The biggest worry was the poor tackling and lack of defensive running - two things that still don't seemed to have improved under Hardwick going into his 6th year. If this doesn't change when the real stuff starts then surely you have to start wonder if they ever will while he's in charge. Think we can just about write him off ever coaching a functional forward line...seems to be beyond him....particularly while we continue willfully under resource him by not properly replacing departed assistants. Ultimately though, the buck stops with him.

About our position at least....can't quite see Brisbane, GWS & Feetofclay topping the ladder this year, let alone Hawthorn & Port finishing 10th & 16th respectively. Hopefully ASADA will see that Essendon maintain their position though.
