Sportal for afl.com.au
Richmond midfielder Brett Deledio has edged out the Western Bulldogs' Ryan Griffen to win this year's NAB Rising Star Award with the two young stars dominating the final voting.

Deledio polled 43 out of a maximum of 45 votes to become the first Richmond player to win the award, with Griffen finishing a clear second on 34 votes. Fremantle's David Mundy (19 votes), Melbourne's Brock McLean (15 votes) and Brisbane's Jed Adcock (14 votes) were the only other players to poll in double figures.

The votes were cast in a 5-4-3-2-1 format by nine judges with Deledio and Griffen getting the nod as the top two players from each judge except former Richmond champion Kevin Bartlett, who gave Deledio the maximum five votes but did not give Griffen a single vote.

To be eligible a player had to be aged under 21 at the start of the season, have played fewer than ten games at the start of the season, and he must not have been suspended during the season. One player was nominated from each round of the season.

Deledio becomes the first number one draft pick to win the award in his debut season although St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt, the number one pick in the 2000 draft, won the award in his second season in 2002 after an injury-marred first season in 2001 meant he was still eligible.

The 18-year-old from Kyabram not only played every game this season but averaged 15 disposals, four marks and two tackles per game and also kicked a handy 14 goals in his first season with his electrifying pace already drawing comparisons to last year's Brownlow Medal winner Chris Judd.

Deledio also showed his versatility by playing as a midfielder and defender in his first season while he even played as a key forward in the Tigers' round 15 win over Essendon at the MCG.

His best performance of the season was against Hawthorn in round 21 when he had 26 disposals with his exciting dash around the wing helping set up the Tigers' winning goal in the final minute.

Griffen performed superbly to finish in second place given he played just 17 games for the season after injury interrupted pre-season.

The number three pick in last year's draft impressed with his poise and balance and ability to beat tackles and kick the ball accurately over long distances.

His best performance came in round 17 when opposed to Geelong star Gary Ablett he had 21 possessions at half-back in a best-afield performance.

While future midfield champions in Deledio and Griffen dominated this year's voting, this year's crop of nominees also featured plenty of exciting future key position stars headed by third placed getter Mundy as well as Collingwood's Travis Cloke, Essendon pair Kepler Bradley and Jason Laycock, Hawthorn pair Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead, Bulldogs' ruckman Will Minson and Geelong full-forward Nathan Ablett.

The Brisbane Lions headed the list of nominations for this year's award with four while the Hawks had three with reigning premiers Port Adelaide, minor premiers Adelaide, Sydney and the Kangaroos the only clubs not to earn a Rising Star nominee this season.

FINAL VOTING:
Brett Deledio (Rich) 43, Ryan Griffen (Dogs) 34, David Mundy (Freo) 19, Brock McLean (Melb) 15, Jed Adcock (Bris) 14, Jordan Lewis (Haw) 3, Justin Sherman (Bris) 2, Adam Selwood (WCE) 2, Lance Franklin (Haw) 1, Kepler Bradley (Ess) 1, Will Minson (Dogs) 1.

INDIVIDUAL VOTING:

Andrew Demetriou
5 - Deledio, 4 - Griffen, 3 - Mundy, 2 - McLean, 1 - A Selwood.
Adrian Anderson
5 - Griffen, 4 - Deledio, 3 - McLean, 2 - Mundy, 1- Franklin.
Rod Austin

Gerard Healy
5 - Deledio, 4 - Griffen, 3 - Mundy, 2 - Sherman, 1 - Minson.
Neil Kerley

Chris Mainwaring
5 - Deledio, 4 - Griffen, 3 - Mundy, 2 - McLean, 1 - A Selwood.
Kevin Sheehan
5- Deledio, 4 - Griffen, 3 - Adcock, 2 - McLean, 1 - Bradley.
Robert Walls
5 - Deledio, 4 - Griffen, 3 - Mundy, 2 - Adcock, 1 - Lewis.

well lets state some facts here! kb for the first time in ages is right on the money!!!
facts are facts  and griffen was nominated because of his "presumed" bog performance against the cats where  he had 21 possessions on gary ablett jnr! now how the hell does that earn him a nomination when ablett kicked 3 goals on him and had 27 possessions. poo just becaue he baulked him once and ran off him in that passage of play all and sundry were licking his bollocks! now imo when a hbflanker plays on a hfflanker and the hff kicks 3 goals and has 27 touches , i dont beleive that is an indication the defender won the dual  and deserved a nomination!

wel done lids

griffen u were smashed by a kid nearly 1 yr younger than u!!

all u doggies woof woof away!

kb about time u got something right

Congrats Lids!  :cheers

However a few points i have to make:

1. Why are Demetriou and Anderson on the selection panel, since when are they player experts, i thought they worked in the Administration side of things? (Anderson as everybody knows is just an out and out idiot!)

2. Kerley giving Griffen 5 votes and Bartlett not giving Griffen a single vote stinks of bias!

3. Was Kepler Bradley hungover?

4. Is it me or does Will Minson sound like a genious/extremely smart person?

Great stuff! Congrats to Lids. A very deserving winner :bow :cheers. 43 out of a max of 45 - romped it in :thumbsup.

Must be Richmond's first award winner since Rioli won the Norm Smith in 1982!

As for the judges - Demetriou played for North so fair enough but to have two admin blokes on the panel and one of them Anderson ???.

Lids on SEN shortly. For someone so composed on the field he was very nervous up on stage understandably by the moment.

Can the Tiges go back to back: Meyer = Rising Star 2006?

Well Done to Lids - sensational effort and to think he will improve.

Can the Tiges go back to back: Meyer = Rising Star 2006?

Pattison, Polo, Foley or Thursfield - seems to be a cast of 1000's  ;D

Adrian Anderson
5 - Griffen, 4 - Deledio, 3 - McLean, 2 - Mundy, 1- Franklin.

How much more proof do we need - first the tribunal, then "the whispers in the sky" fiasco and now his voting - Andrian Anderson - A True Golden Turnup  :rollin

Kevin Bartlett
5 - Deledio, 4 - Adcock, 3- McLean, 2 - Lewis, 1 - Mundy.

Now that is worth a laugh :lol

Chris Mainwaring

he had a good yr and had better games than that geelomg game but the doggies and media pumped up his profile way to much  adcock, mclean, frankilin, and the lions selwin had a better yr than griffen just not as much yahoo/hooha from the media

What Lids said:

* Cambo told him to enjoy his footy and be smart with your money as your time in footy doesn't last long.

* Most surprising aspect of footy was the roar of the crowd when he had the footy.

* For the young ladies out there - he's single. Cogs will be his date to the brownlow lol.

* Terry's given him a license to kick torps.

* Said he needs to get fitter to play midfield and hit the gym. Put on say another 5kg to get to around 88-90kg.

In fairness X, Lids got nominated in a week he wasn't a standout. The nominees except for the first round or two are meant to be get the nod based on a few good games in succession and that's what they did with Lids and Griffen but not with Nathan Ablett when the judges went for the hype surrounding the surname after one game. When the dogs were coming home like a train late in the season to pinch a finals spot Griffen didn't look out of place although I agree with you about his game on Ablett. Still 17 games and a 13 possie average is a fair effort for a first year player.

I know what i u mean and i agre, griffen is a good kid and player and it will great to see lids and he dual in coming years. but griffen had the advantage of coming home in the season in a team on fire, imagine if the tigers came home on fire in the past 8 rounds, lids would have been even hotter, what makes lids yr so specail is he played in many position and did so quite well, griffen only played well off half back. also lids kept on battling and getting better as the yr went on in a team that struggled. griffen played less games but we dont know if he played every game whether he would have fatigued and fizzled as many young ones do in their 1st yr, but lids just got better and better til rnd 22.

griffen was worthy nominee but mundy franklin roughead imo and others had better yrs.

now about ablett, the best part about him being nominated so quick and late is that he cant win it next yr!!!!!

* Most surprising aspect of footy was the roar of the crowd when he had the footy.

On Sunday, the most exciting part of the game for me was a piece of play that Deledio was involved in.  He collected the ball in our defensive half and got away from G. Ablett before he was able to get a finger on him.  That was probably the first time for the day we really got to hear how many Richmond supporters were at the ground, because everyone of us cheered him on once we saw him take off with the footy in his hands.

Deledio makes the right choice
2:29:37 PM Wed 31 August, 2005
Matt Burgan
Sportal for afl.com.au

Outstanding young Richmond midfielder Brett Deledio - the winner of this year's NAB AFL Rising Star Medal - says that playing football at the highest level was always his number one priority ahead of a potential cricket career with his state.

Earlier this year it was reported that the late David Hookes, who was the Victorian cricket coach when Deledio was on the verge of an AFL career, was going to offer the prodigious youngster a Bushrangers' contract - one of only 20 available at senior level.

Hookes believed that cricket needed to take a stand and claim a talented young sportsman ahead of football.

Hookes had Deledio in his sights, but Deledio said playing Victoria was not an option over an AFL career.

"I played in the under 17s (for Victoria), so obviously I was still tossing up then, with the under 18s (football) carnival and the under 17s cricket, so it only happened reasonably late, but I've always leaned more towards footy," Deledio said after winning the NAB AFL Rising Star Medal.

"Dad (Wayne played one match for Carlton in 1975) played it, so I wanted to play it just like he did.

"I had no idea (about Hookes' idea), until I read about it in the paper.

Along with Nathan Buckley and Michael Wilson, Deledio became the third player to win the Rising Star Medal after playing every match for the year, but he still didn't believe he would claim the honour.

"I wouldn't say I was expecting it. There are a lot of good players in this year's group, so to win it is an absolute shock," Deledio said.

"To be put in a group with (previous winners) Ben Cousins and Nathan Buckley and those guys is massive."

Deledio said his first season was a buzz and that started way back in Richmond's pre-season campaign.

"Running out there for the first time - even my Wizard Cup first game - I didn't want to smile, I wanted to be all serious, but I couldn't help it," Deledio said.

"The crowd was cheering and I had the biggest smile come across my face. Just the awe of being out there, playing in front of 70,000 people, is the best feeling ever."

As for a player he has modeled his game on?

"I've always loved the way Chris Judd played, so to look at the way he plays and the way he handles himself in the media - he's probably the biggest guy that I 'role' myself on," Deledio said.

"He's my favourite player, so to be compared to him - I can't really describe the feeling."

Deledio was a monte: Johnson

Matt Burgan
Sportal for afl.com.au

Richmond captain Kane Johnson says there was no surprise at all from his perspective that outstanding young teammate Brett Deledio won this year's NAB AFL Rising Star Medal.

Johnson said Deledio was a cut above the rest of the NAB AFL Rising Star nominees for 2005.

"He's been the standout player of the year," Johnson said, when joining Deledio at his Rising Star media conference on Wednesday.

"Obviously (Western Bulldogs) Ryan Griffen was very good as well, but Brett played all 22 games and averaged 15 possessions and kicked 20-odd goals, so it's a fantastic effort for a first-year player."

But Johnson said Deledio is likely to face a tougher season in 2006, due to greater expectations.

"Obviously, I think the second year is probably always the hardest year and I think he'll have a lot more pressure on him from now on, and obviously he'll be getting tagged a little bit throughout his career, so he's going to have to get used to that," Johnson said.

"But he's got a good head on his shoulders and I'm sure he'll cope."

If he does he'll be an all-time great.

When u think about it all players pre late 70s were realistically s h i t h o u s e.

Blokes like Dyer,Hart,Farmer would not even get a game in a competition that has refined its skills
to such a degree that today there are some absolute freaks going around.

They might have done the odd good thing

I know that the older guys are our history and all but face it,how easy and slack was it back then.

Realistically they stand for nothing in todays game except maybe tried it first.

Well done Lids.

Guts, glory for star Tiger
01 September 2005
 Herald Sun

BRETT Deledio has had blond tips since he was 12, been wearing white boots since his second senior match and regularly attends a trendy salon for facials.

NAB Rising Star It's the image of a pretty boy, and he's proud of it.

But there's another far tougher side to this extraordinarily talented 18-year-old, and without it he yesterday would not have gained the highest honour available to young AFL players.

Deledio, Richmond's No. 1 selection in last year's national draft, was acknowledged as the 2005 National Rising Star, a title he won easily from Bulldog Ryan Griffen and Fremantle's David Mundy.

The Deledio stories told at yesterday's presentation at Crown centred on the hardness of of the boy from Kyabram and the Murray Bushrangers.

Especially the one about the night at training when blood began to pour from his nose after it was broken in a collision with a teammate at Punt Rd.

Deledio got straight up, and kept training. Tough kid, thought coach Terry Wallace.

Training finished and the players completed the night's work with some sit-ups and push-ups. Deledio was there.

Wallace said yesterday most players then showered and left, but as he made his way to the exit that night, he saw Deledio in the boxing ring.

Headgear on and gloves laced, he was sparring. Blond tips, white boots, perfect skin . . . and plenty of guts.

"That all started with Dad teaching me a 'Get up, you're not hurt' mentality," Deledio said yesterday after accepting the award, that carries with it a $10,000 investment portfolio.

"Any time you look like you're hurt, you get up, you don't show your pain on the footy field. And you want to train how you play, so I took that on the training track and just did the same."

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said Deledio had outstripped expectations.

"After three weeks of training I knew he would play straight away," Wallace said.

"He showed he was of that level - he could jump right in and mix it with the best.

"But one of the real strengths of his season was that he actually got better as the season went along. I thought he would tire at some stage, but instead he raised the bar as games got more important and the challenge got greater both for him and the team.

"I tried to keep him out of the middle of the ground early, out of the hurly-burly, so he could find his feet. But he is a natural ruck-rover - that's where he will play - and so we moved him in there.

'Then he handled everything we put up to him - all the challenges. He's as good a youngster as I've had.

"It is a really prestigious award, given the past winners. Now it is just a matter of not getting ahead of himself.

"And Richmond hasn't had a great history with No.1 draft picks, so it shows we were on the mark too."

AND we thought that football award voting disputes were limited only to the Brownlow Medal. What about the stoush that erupted yesterday between Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade and former star Kevin Bartlett over the former Richmond champion's assessment in the AFL Rising Star award of Doggie teenager Ryan Griffen.

The 19-year-old South Australian finished second in the award with 34 votes, nine behind the eventual winner Brett Deledio, but no thanks to Bartlett, one of the nine judges, who was the only one not to have him in his top five, a decision Eade said he was "amazed and gobsmacked" by.

"Here's a bloke who's meant to know a bit about footy," thundered Eade. "Everyone said it was too close to call between the two of them (Deledio and Griffen). I have no idea how Bartlett came to his decision to leave him out."

Well, here's how, Bartlett hitting back at Eade yesterday, and doing so with the help of a set of charts that not only appear to support his argument but - depending on how much importance you place on statistics, of course - even indicate that the other eight judges may have got their voting wrong.

The stats we speak of are respected stats firm ProWess' personal Rising Star rankings, based on 17 different categories, from possessions, to contested and uncontested kicks, right down to the "one percenters". The bottom line is that not only did Griffen not finish in ProWess' top five, but he only narrowly made the top 10, finishing ninth, with 652 points, 296 behind the top-placed Deledio.

"I think Griffen will be one day an outstanding player, but in the context of this year I rated him sixth in the Rising Star," said Bartlett.

I was puzzled by Griffen's lowly ranking. I can only assume that these points are season aggregates. So the 5 games missed by Griffen prove rather costly. Had Griffen played every game he would have been around 850. I can only assume that some of the other players on that list would have been considerably higher had they played 22 matches as well (perhaps even higher than Delboy).

In my mind, Griffen is a very good footballer. I think he has possibly had a tougher role in the thick of it at the doggies, and has done well. I've seen enough of him to be convinced that he will be a very good footballer, but I havent seen him sprint 35 metres and full pace and launch a 65 metre torp on the run to an unattended teammate. There is no question that Griffen is a very very good footballer, fleet of mind, but not with the sheer natural ability of Deledio. All in my opinion.

Yep Jake you're right about them being aggregates but in terms of number of average disposals Griffen is listed at 10th with 13.2 while Lids is 5th with 15.2.

How’s this for a season?  He’s played every game this year, won the NAB Rising star and, as recognition for winning the rising star award, took part in the GF parade, did a lap before the GF and attended the Brownlow.  He then wins the AFLPA best first year player award, and wins the sprint the next day.

Not to mention all the other interviews and so on in between all of that.  What a season.  I’m tired just thinking about it.

He’s done a great job just to keep his feet on the ground.

Well done Brett. :thumbsup
