Richmond board to consider new contract for Hardwick early next year
Date: December 1, 2015 - 7:40PM
Michael Gleeson
Sports Writer for The Age
The Richmond board will consider a new contract for coach Damien Hardwick early in the new year, with the Tigers coach appearing likely to be re-signed, potentially before round one.
Tigers president Peggy O'Neal said nothing should be read into the fact Hardwick's contract had yet to be extended, saying she felt he had "done a great job".
"I would expect we would be at least starting to consider a proposal from the executive at the start of next year. We think he has done a great job and there has been a lot of improvement in the team under him.
"We have not discussed it as a board yet but I think we would consider it early next year. Damien's contract has not come to the board yet but we have re-signed him twice and we are following the same process as in the past," O'Neal said.
Asked if she thought he would be re-signed before the start of the season, O'Neal said: "I would not predict that, but I would not predict that that would not happen either."
With North Melbourne in the past week re-committing to coach Brad Scott and West Coast renewing Adam Simpson's contract, Hardwick is one of four coaches – Alastair Clarkson, Nathan Buckley and Justin Leppitsch are the others – out of contract at the end of next season.
It is expected that conversations on Hardwick's contract would start at Richmond's first board meeting next year, in February.
In a broad interview, O'Neal also said she favoured the two incumbent board members who are up for re-election being returned to the board.
And she said the club would consider options next year for further re-developing its Punt Road home and would examine where the club could expand as it had already outgrown its existing facilities.
Next season will be Hardwick's seventh in charge. He has taken the club from 15th to playing finals in the past three years, albeit without winning a final.
O'Neal also said she wanted to maintain the make-up of the current board at the election and encouraged members to vote before Friday's deadline.
Property developer Joe Russo and Jason Dowd, who founded and runs the Mitch Dowd underwear brand, are challenging board members Rex Chadwick and vice-president Maurice O'Shannassy, whose terms were up and who are seeking re-election.
"It's been a really well-functioning board that has come a long way in the 10 years since I joined," O'Neal said. "We have renewed the board – John O'Rourke is joining the board (filling a casual vacancy from Carl Walsh's resignation), Kerry Ryan has only been there two years, Mal Speed four years and Brendon Gale will be joining the board from the AGM (as executive director), so I think we have continued to renew the board.
"The two people up for re-election have been important in the rebuilding we have undertaken and the progress we have made. Personally I would like to continue to work with those I know best.
"It's nothing against the two people who are running, but we think we have done a good job and achieved good results."
O'Neal said that while the club accepted the democratic process, the club had sought to act like a commercial board and recruit board members who filled a skills deficiency where one was identified.
Richmond's last bold plan under former president Gary March – launched at the end of 2010 after Gale was appointed – was dubbed 3-0-75 and aimed for the club to play in three finals series, have zero debt and 75,000 members within five years ... and to win three flags within 10 years.
The three premierships might prove overly ambitious in the next five years, but the Tigers broke 70,000 members this year, have cleared their debt and played three finals in the past six years, not five.
O'Neal said the next phase of planning was focused on a range of less eye-catching administrative matters but central to them was examining what to do about the fact the club was outgrowing its Punt Road home.
"We will always be at Punt Road, but it is five years since we finished the work here and you look at Hawthorn and Fremantle and what they are doing with new facilities ... and we are running out of space for the administration, and football always wants more space.
"So we will look at all our options: how much more can we do there with what we have at Punt Road? We will have people examine what is feasible.
"We are part of Yarra Park and the MCC is our landlord, so we will have discussions with them and see how best we can use the space we have."
She said other options for expanding to nearby facilities would also be examined.

silly woman, wish she would go back to her mother country.

Seriously?
Strongly disagree with the board's position. Maybe the DO need Joe Russo in it! ;D

Laughable. This misguided obsession with "stability" is becoming pathological.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick to be offered contract extension before 2016 season
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
December 2, 2015
RICHMOND will hand Damien Hardwick a contract extension before Round 1, signalling their faith in him as the Tigers’ next premiership coach.
Tigers president Peggy O’Neil told the Herald Sun the Richmond board expected to ratify an extension early next year.
That decision will ultimately come from Richmond’s football bosses but the expected timeline will see him secured well before Round 1.
The six-year coach has elevated Richmond into a trio of elimination finals but the Tigers have lost all three in varying but agonising circumstances.
It comes as the Tigers attempt to stifle a board challenge from property developer Jo Russo and corporate recovery expert Jason Dowd
O’Neil urged Richmond supporters to vote before the 5pm Friday election deadline, adamant the club’s board stability had helped it thrive.
Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale recently failed to guarantee an early extension for Hardwick but O’Neil indicated he would be contracted by Round 1.
“We expect to be considering it next year. We haven’t had anything come to the board yet but we would expect it in the new year,’’ she told the Herald Sun.
“Management take the initial running of it but he has done a great job considering where we have come from.
“It will be a matter of going through the same process we have followed in the past, but that’s not a reflection of what we think of Damien.

“He would be the first one to say he has developed as a coach and person and manager of players.
“He has done a good job, is well respected around the place and a fine person, which adds to my estimation of him,” O’Neil said.
The Tigers board will meet on December 15 and again on February 15, 2016, but O’Neil said it could come together at short notice to approve key decisions.
She urged Richmond fans to remain patient despite the finals losses: a late fade-out against Carlton, a capitulation to Port Adelaide, then a midfield demolition at the hands of North Melbourne.
“We are all impatient. We all want to see us improve again. That is the expectation — that we improve again,’’ she said.
“The coach was disappointed and the players were disappointed.
“And if we were disappointed, imagine how badly the players felt.
“We can’t dwell on the past for very long, we need to start preparing for another year. The supporters need to hang in there.”

The bottom line is he is contracted for next year already. What is the rush in extending his contract now?
-
Stability.
-
Stability is for those with a engrained fear of failure, and those too afraid to take risks for success.
Lets just aim not to do too badly, hey Tiges?
Because doing ok ain't bad
-
Yep
Someone ring the poo truck
Send it to penny
-
What would be the minimum requirement for a contract extension? Surely he has to achieve something he hasn't achieved yet to warrant an extension and "best preseason ever" won't cut it.
-
Losing finals consistently it seems
My kingdom fr a Scott :whistle
-
poo admin full of backslappers who are afraid to lose their wage and kids school fees.
Stagnant in finals for the last three years.
No improvement.
So what happens - club gets an 18 year old Rioli and and older, problematic Yarran and they use it as a means of justification to support their rubbish propaganda.
I stuffEN hate these people at the club.
-
well done to those concerned who played a part in this decision of re-signing this dud.
Joe Russo saw the writing on the wall and wanted change to deliver us a flag, but no benny fail, dan the flog and peggy sue's collective imput got exactly what they wanted. Stability and a dud coach for the next 3 years.
well done idiots.

They're bunch of clueless behindholes.
What a joke.

WP was very vocal against the appointment of russo. Pretty sure stability was mentioned.
Now if our very own peggy sue cites stability in her rhetoric, then what do you think her preference was in regards to dimwit's contract?
They are so scared of being perceived as "eating their own" they have gone too far the other way. 8 year deal to a bloke who is now a proven failure is incredible.

Another masterstroke hiring this bloke.
RICHMOND insists it doesn’t need to rebuild and has defended its recruiting strategy as its nightmare season lurches from bad to worse.
Tigers football boss Dan Richardson said the club knew its mature-age recruits couldn’t take it to a flag, but were forced to take them in the GWS and Gold Coast-forced compromised drafts.
Richardson said the club’s disastrous 1-5 start and slim chance of playing finals wouldn’t deter it from trading early picks for that elusive A-grade player.
“The list strategy won’t change. Clearly we need to improve our top-end talent and the best way to do that is through early draft picks, which we don’t know whether we’ve got yet, or by bringing in some A Grade talent and to do that you need to give up early draft picks,” Richardson said.
Richardson told Triple M that Richmond had recruited the right players in recent years.
“Through the compromised draft period we did bring in a balance of mature age players and draft picks and we were well aware a lot of those mature-age players wouldn’t be able to take us to the next step,” he said.
“We won 15 games last year with a list that’s not drastically different to what it is now. Clearly there’s some injuries and young players who are probably showing a bit of inconsistency at the moment,” he said.
“That certainly doesn’t mean that in Round 6 we’re throwing the white flag up and saying, ‘The season is over’. But clearly we’re not happy with where we’re at.
“We’re certainly not rebuilding, but we know we need to improve and move on from some of the mature-age talent we brought in during the compromised drafts that have taken us to three finals series without winning one.”

excuses excuses excuses. Was it GWS and GC fault that we gave hamspud an extra year and was it their fault we gave up 6 for a spud like conca.
more spin from the kings of spin.

Wow!
Defending the undefendable.
We are clearly delusional as a collective group at Tigerland.

Sure we're not rebuilding :shh

I have made it very very clear that I was against the contract extension given before round 1 there was no need for it. It was stupid
However, you have conveniently forgotten that your mate Russo said Hardwick was a good coach, expected him to be retained. Don't let that little comment of his get lost in your rant
-
of course he said that. To keep people like yourself from necking yourself at the thought of a change in leadership and "stability"

"Necking yourself" :huh exceptionally poor taste
Anyway... I was against him because he promised the world but had no plan on how to deliver on his promises. And more to the point he made statements on things (read made promises) he no idea about.
He like you clearly have no idea how a board expspecially one at a footy club operates.
-
LMAO
That Russo clown said he thought Hardwick was a very good coach.
sure some big mouth wop who thought hardwick was a good coach would have been the saviour. lol
funny how the unthinking always believe it is down to one or two people, to either blame for the crap or to magically fix the crap
-
It's staggering that Hardwick has coached our club for more games than all but two past coaches - Hafey and Dyer.
Even with our history or 'eating our own' the fact that we've extended his contact for TWO years without meaningful success is an indictment on the club.
