Think we will need to weather an absolutely fired up and desperate Pies side in the first quarter. If we can do that then I think we can gradually overcome them. If we come out asleep like we have done on occasions then I think we could be in for a tough night.

In terms of changes we need to replace lumbering with
speed and sorry spud your time is up. Have to come up with a more mobile ruck strategy before Friday night.

They've lost Swan as well which is a huge out for them. I agree, we need to burn them on the outside and we should get over the line. Their pressure will be enormous in the first half so hopefully we can absorb it and hopefully someone can block Macaffer if he tries to scrag Cotch again.

I hope they bring in Lennon

It's midfield v midfield, if we can win the clearness we'll win the game.

Is Townsend going to try and stop someone getting kick? No good him being faux tough and going off with blood if Cotchin still can't get a kick and the opposition midfield are running riot. If he goes off with blood it better be because he's taken out their tagger.

Agree. Collingwood will be fired up to the maximum. Had a lot of media attention on them this week. Reid will be a handy inclusion for them. Treloar will want to make a statement. Cannot afford to start off slowly.

Match preview: Collingwood v Richmond

AFL.com.au
March 30, 2016

SUMMARY

Little more than a week ago this April Fools' Day clash loomed as one of the showpiece games in the early part of the season. It's still a huge Friday night clash, however some of the gloss has been taken off because of the unexpectedly poor round-one showings and personnel issues of both clubs, but particularly the Pies, who will need a major form reversal to notch their first win of the season. The Tigers have a golden opportunity to post their first hat-trick of wins over Collingwood since 2001-02, and consign the Pies to an 0-2 record for the first time since 2005.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Friday, April 1, 7.50pm AEDT

LAST FIVE TIMES
R21, 2015, Richmond 23.9 (147) d Collingwood 7.14 (56) at the MCG
R7, 2015, Richmond 16.9 (105) d Collingwood 15.10 (100) at the MCG
R4, 2014, Collingwood 16.14 (110) d Richmond 10.12 (72) at the MCG
R4, 2013, Collingwood 16.17 (113) d Richmond 11.13 (79) at the MCG
R2, 2012, Collingwood 12.13 (85) d Richmond 8.16 (64) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. In round 21 last year Richmond belted Collingwood by 91 points – its biggest win over the Pies since 1976 – despite having nine fewer inside 50s. Ty Vickery bagged a career-high six goals.

2. In round one the Magpies were smashed all over the field: 334-429 disposals, 69-81 marks, 18-43 scoring shots and 45-76 inside 50s.

3. Despite defeating Carlton in round one, the Tigers finished with fewer disposals, took 26 fewer marks, had one fewer scoring shot and 11 fewer inside 50s.

4. Richmond defeated Collingwood twice last year, ending a seven-game losing streak against the Magpies that stretched back to 2008.

5. The two clubs will clash for the 204th time, with the Magpies holding a clear advantage with 116 wins to 86. (There has been one draw.)

6. Kane Lambert's prospects continue to rise. In his past two games, the Tigers midfielder has risen in the Schick AFL Player Ratings from No. 489 overall to No.443.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Travis Cloke. The Magpie spearhead had scant opportunity to have an impact in attack last week due to the Swans' absolute dominance, and out of sheer desperation was given a rare run in the ruck after half-time in an effort to get him involved. The 234-gamer doesn't need to kick a bag of goals, but he needs to provide a strong target and show leadership for young cohorts Darcy Moore and Corey Gault.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 12 points

Punters jump on Tiggy train

Who are the movers and sliders in premiership, Brownlow and Rising Star betting? TAB's Nick Quinn has the latest.

WHO’S HOT

Richmond ($1.60)

Punters have ignored last week’s scare against Carlton and have had a big go on the Tigers.

So far 92 per cent of the money bet on the game is for Richmond against the Magpies ($2.35). One TAB punter in particular is very keen, betting $6500 on the Tigers on Wednesday morning at $1.60.

“Last week wasn’t great for the Tigers but punters seem willing to give them another chance with hardly any support for the Pies,” TAB’s Nick Quinn said.

The Pies are going to try and do the Terry towel thing before the game and at the breaks  :chuck.

When captain Scott Pendlebury calls his players into a huddle in the Ponsford Stand goal square in the minute before the first bounce, our trainers will wave their towels above their heads.

At this moment, it’s your cue to rise to your feet and wave your Collingwood scarf, creating a sea of Black and White across the MCG.

From Dimma:

“It is really hard as a club, when you have a loss that you wouldn’t expect, and you’ve got to look in to rectify that.  But, in saying that, we were the same,” Hardwick said.

“We were lucky enough that we got the four points. Probably reviewed it as a loss, really.  We didn’t play anywhere near my level of expectation, or the team’s level of expectation.

“So, while Collingwood are expected to come out and perform, so are we.

“We were really disappointed with our performance last week.

“I thought our work-rate wasn’t good enough, our intensity to pattern run was poor, our ability to win contested ball was poor.

“Those things, if they generally point in the wrong direction, you’re not going to win many games.

“So, we’re looking for an improved effort on all those fronts this week.

“We owe better to our fans, we owe better to ourselves.

“We’ll make sure we come out playing a hell of a lot better this week.”

Put him on Cloke early and make sure Cloke  doesn't get any confidence at all during the game.

Ok my thought on how this will pan out.
we've kicked 3.8 and exhausted ourselves
cripples and injuries on the bench now
after halftime the game will open up
think they will have the momentum and snatch the win
think we sealed our fate in that quarter kicking poorly
our best players are 1st year players - stuffing disgusting
dgaf if you disagree, something has to be done

how hard is it to get a team ready to go for the start of a season?

Kicking points from 25-35m out on a slight angle is unacceptable.

Up against it here - pies shizen kicking is the only thing saving us so far.

That half was not AFL standard I dont care what anyone says. Both teams should be ashamed, against any decent side both sides would down by at least 10 goals. I can honestly say that I have never seen a game in what appear to be perfect conditions with so many skill errors by hand and foot.

A game that makes the coach rip his hair out. We dominated that quarter and should be 5 goals up but kicked 1.6 and gifted the Pies a goal via our idiotic unforced turnovers  :banghead.

Any news on Grigg, Short (shoulder?) and Astbury? We've already lost Grimes  :(.

My pet hate in bold. Poor technique most of our misses.

The effort was there that quarter unlike last week but just too many dumb unforced turnovers including in front of the big sticks.

2nd quarter, watch the replay, bad kicking is bad football, hang your heads, we handed an inferior team a win, and mark this game down as yet another case of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. How do we allow a snap in the goal square from a set kick with 10 seconds to go, only the Tigers.

Injury to Grimes had a big impact as Hunt had to play in defensive 50. Hunt should have been wearing stripes tonight. Rance brain explosion, Vlastuin brain explosion, this is in a nutshell why we cant win elim finals, when the pressure is really on we dont have the personnel to cope and just turn to water.

Hunt: worse performance by any player I've ever seen. Shouldn't be allowed to play in our jumper ever again. I counted atleast 7 errors in the third quarter alone. Bloody disgrace.  :banghead

Vickery: plays on after taking the mark 40 metres out. Could've put the nail in the coffin.  :banghead

Rance: giving away a blatant free kick, dropped marks, turnovers. It was like he turned the clock back 5 years.

Martin: outside banana benders when he could've just guided it through.
Vlaustin: got his pants pulled down by the midget wog.

Team: dominated all the stats but lost. SOFT SOFT SOFT!!!!! Mentally week bunch of pansies.

Captain Cotchin:  too mentally week and has lost all presence and X factor he once had. Too many poofy 20 metre dinky specials - bloody can't stand it. I don't care how many possessions he got.

Can see headlines coming soon suggesting big problems for our playing group, Hardwick losing the support of the playing group etc. etc. and the season shot to pieces before the halfway mark.

That is going to be costly.
Poor decisions at the selection table has cost us another game. Hunt was putrid. Grigg just has to go too. No upside. He just wasn't ready IMO.
McIntosh was good across HB. I think we have found his best spot.
Menadue worked hard all night.
Hampson got his hand on the ball first but his kicking isn't AFL standard so shouldn't be playing.
Griffiths went back to his usuall efforts after a decent game last week. So physically weak!!
Dusty was good.
Short had a good debut but will need to get involved more if he is to keep his spot.
Lambert and Lloyd were dangerous and looked to have taken the next step.
Bad kicking for goal in the second quarter kept the Pies in it but we should have been 6 goals up.  You cannot afford not to put teams away when you have the opportunity because you know the opposition will come at you if they are close enough.

Out of his 6 goals, one was from a mark and another from a good pick up and snap and the other 4 from free kicks. It's fair to say he got a pretty good run from the maggots.

Noticed Vickery was being held back a couple of times in back play but no free. Not blaming the umps for the loss but they sure made it harder for us. Dont mind the intentional out of bounds decision but am sure in another game during the season another team will do the same thing in a clutch moment and we wont be the beneficiary of a free kick.

By then it won't be so much about the result but what we take away from the match.

Hooray for everything.

If Maric was playing he would not have allowed Grundy to be at the back unguarded. This was a very painful loss which will have ramifications later in the season. Someone in the leadership group should have stood up. This side needs Lids back badly.

Excellent post

Still peeved. Outside of the result there were a number, berries of huge disappointments

extremely disappointed with C Ellis, did he touch the ball? I'm a huge rap for this kid but last night he was poor. He looks terrible slow and dare I say it unfit.

Biggest disappointment for me was Griffiths. I've defended this bloke a lot because I understood what his role is and what he is supposed to be doing. But last night he gave nothing, that dropped in the last was costly and inexcusable

Obviously in a loss like last night there are those who never fail to disappoint. ...hello Brandon, Hampson, Hunt

And then there are those who you expect more from and they let you down. And when one of them is your best player (hello Rance) then it makes it all the more gut wrenching. That play that Cotchin originally set up by going backwards to Rance who then inexcusably went 40 metres sideways with a high kick to Vlastuin was so costly... not to mention stupid

As for our Captain, people can make excuses, point to the 38 touches he had but missing set shots 30 metres out is his Achilles heel and team deflated. It hurts.

Actually the 2nd quarter of missing sitters helped in the Pies win, half time should have been 5 goals up and game just about over. Then again based on the last 3 minutes probably not

Oh well

We lost what we shouldn't have and now we face the consequences of our stupidity and ineptitude

Disagree with some of that.
C. Ellis has played about 8 games of senior footy. He is playing a roll/position he would have never played in before at junior level. He is a player that is never going to look manic so if you are expecting that you will be disappointed for a long time. Kids like C. Ellis need time and support. I admit he needs to get involved more but there is more to consider when marking this kid.

I also thought B. Ellis did ok and for me to say that is a big deal.

The Rance kick was to T. Hunt not Valustin. Hunt poo himself and dropped a mark an AFL player should have taken and then couldn't even get the ball over the line for a throw in. Blaming Cotch two kicks before is a stretch.

Cotch definitely should have slotted those 2 goals in the second quarter but overall he played well IMO. He is not in his 2012 form and he knows that but he gives his all and did so again last night. His job will be a hell of a lot easier when players like Hunt, Grigg, Ellis, Hampson, GRIFF, are out of the side. All those players are soft and couldn't give a poo about putting their bodies on the line for our club. Our stars can only do so much, the rest of these arseholes need to contribute.

Hunt needed to run back to the goals to give himself and Rance the opportunity to hit the target whilst giving him (Hunt) and uncontested mark. Standing still waiting for the ball to arrive only gives the pies player time to spoil.

It all started because in usual Tigers fashion we tried to protect a lead rather than taking advantage of the domination we had of the Pies of that point in the game. Once we got to 16 points up we basically slowed the game down which is exactly what the Pies wanted. Again its so obvious what we did wrong but not sure if its the players under instructions from the coach or its just a natural thing to do. At 10 minutes to go and 16 points up its not the time to be playing safe, I hate to lay blame but Cotch is one of the main offenders here, his short passing is almost as bad as Hamspuds shooting for goal (Cotch's goalkicking is about the same) and a number of times last night he put teammates under pressure with loopy handballs and chippy kicks. Instead of kicking down the line Cotch goes backwards too often at the wrong times and I cringed on occasions last night because you could clearly see what was going to unfold.

Sadly, Cotchin is part of the problem. He is a good player who tries, but he's far from elite and he's not a leader's behind hole.

He looked sacred to take that set shot. Don't tell me that is captain material.

No it's not. What scares me though is that it goes beyond the current coaching group and players. It's our culture and after many attempts at changing it, it's still the same and will be for quite some time.

What ever happened to the Cotchin circa 2012?

Aren't you supposed to get better as you approach 25 to 26 years of age?

He has gone backward so much. I can't even imagine Hardwick telling him to do dinky 20m kicks and not to take the game on.

Tigeritis has certainly attacked him and there looks like there is no cure.... :'(

What kind of  professional footballers have the ball on the forward side of the wing & then go backwards 80 metres to goal & turn it over & give them a goal when other so called professionals are free.

Seriously last night l seen a bunch of flogs out there making the dumbest decisions. That is the most ugly football l seen apart from those ugly magpie supporters there.

Rance makes some of the dumbest decisions at time. McIntosh another dummy but trys. Griffiths would try to take a mark over his Grandma,  :snidegrin Just a bad night which adds to all the others. Been in the system for so long now we are waiting for his one huge game before his career ends from stupidity.  :snidegrin

Both teams were absolutely pathetic. No supporter of RFC would have been happy up to 1/2 time. Those toothless magpie mongs would have been & would believe they were watching something special apart from themselves.

Hunt is the dumbest & most gutless player in the AFL  :banghead to pull out of a contest l could have got up & left after seeing that. "But Dusty was playing"  :snidegrin
Hunt is the type of player who is super slow & would try to spin out of a contest surrounded by 3 opposition players with their arms out waiting to wrap the mummy boy up.. It will never work dumb dumb. He tackles players trying to force them to the ground but there is only one problem, The opposition player didn't even have hold of the ball. The umpires so dumb at times let it go  :rollin

Now injuries have depleted our club & even so more last night. So l'm going to keep my head out of the sand. Grimes, Griggs, Hampson, Townsend all injured before 1/2 time & several others in the 2nd half including Short. We were 1 player down at 1/4 time. Our players clearly fatigued in the last half & run out of puff but that game was lost by fogged minds. Them Buckley Maggots are pathetic & we will cop the stuff from the football media & so called experts like David King, Terry Wallace.  :snidegrin

Anyway the  good side Houli  played another great game, So much run & carry but sometimes players are waiting to give it off to him which slows the play down, Others must be prepared to run more & take on the run & carry roll for that style of game to flow properly or the opposition can make ground. Sometimes they just need to stop, think & make better decisions. McIntosh must make better decisions. Brandon Ellis needs to lift more & Hunt needs to go live in the VFL.  :scream

Dustin Martin is one of the best footballers l have ever seen. :bow The run & guts that lad has. Another year of being mentored & he will win a Brownlow medal he is that good. That lad stands up to anyone & roughs them up. That is why l go to watch games with players like him.

Short, Lloyd, Lambert, Miles, Cory Ellis all played well & Cotchin l thought was good & even done a dusty  ;D Our side is young & there are some good signs for our future.

l will make one thing clear & that Collingwood were made look good from our costly turnovers last night. They are clearly a crap side who make even more dumber decisions. It was only our injuries & critical turnovers that got them over the line. Infact l would hate to see a overall tally of the turnovers from this ugly game Where is our stats guy  :snidegrin

Dustin Martin  :clapping you great warrior  :gotigers

Get your point about C Ellis and I understand he's only played 8 games  I'd also love to just keep playing to give give him game time.

But right now he is playing with no confidence. He didn't touch the ball in the 1st or 3rd quarters. For reasons I will admit I don't understand he seems to be staying back and not wanting to get involved. He's not presenting an option for run & carry.

The kid is an elite kick and he doesn't seem to want to kick it long. Is it instruction? Maybe, but right now I'd rather see him run around in the VFL for a few weeks and touch it 30 times than have him not get near it at AFL level and see him look lost out there.

Supercoach 7 of 9 saw that young Corey clearly had too much natural flair & talent and backed himself ....he likes to coach those sort mug lair tendencies out of players...

it actually does seem that way.

I cant belive those saying ellis had a good game.

He had 6 inside 50s and nearly, if not every one, gave a collingwood player an easy rebound 50. He just blazes away with no purpose and hopes the forwards are good enough to make something out of his hap hazard delivery. the only time he hits a target is when he picks out a loose player short. he has no understanding/capability of, how to kick long to advantage

Stuff this crap. Anyone who actually finds  anything positive out of this debacle is a dead set looser just like the RFC.

What a pathetic rabble, worst in the AFL. Gutless, spineless bunch of freaking no good floggers.

Now I'm going to drink.... :cheers :lol

Last night was the most diabolical loss I have ever experienced and this includes the 157 point touch up at the hands of geelong .

How do you let a team that had struggled to kick 10 goals in 115 minutes of football , kick 3 in the final 5 minutes.

Did you see Buckleys face when Jack kicked his third , he knew the game was gone. Little did he know that the tigers are the gift that keeps on giving.

Richmond  on the other hand butcher opportunity after opportunity to seal the game.

Captain can't kick a goal from straight in front.....been like that for a while now.

Big thanks to the Richmond football club for ruining my weekend.

It's actually looser, however unsure if it relates to the sphincter

Hahaha, you're right it's looser and it does relate to the sphincter. I feel as though I have been bent over.

Said exactly the same thing at the bar after the game. Feel like it was worse than the 157 point drumming at least we knew where we were and against a decent unit.

Friday was just an absolute disgrace.

Interesting watching the Gold Coast get their first win against Freo, if any team would be nervous with a lead it should have been them. However I hope our players were watching how they continued to attack and increased the lead going into the last 10 minutes. Simply a mindset but we have become so defensively orientated I think its going to be difficult going the other way.

Too many sissyy 20 metre dinky specials - bloody can't stand it. I don't care how many possessions he got.
A week as pee performance, couldn't kick a goal, couldn't get us over the line as captain. Not good enough!

*weak

I think he was the one called up to play B.Ellis' role of last week. Obviously it didn't work for either of them. We've obviously stayed with the game plan designed for Yarran and/or Conca and as weird as it sounds we are actually missing Conca's run.

You do realise Jack talks the biggest shyte out of anyone in the team and would go close in the league. If that's your reason from dropping Cotch as captain you're going to be bitterly disappointed if Jack was captain
