I know it's a guess
But...
Houli should not play.
Mrakov before Bachar :pray
-
agree...also chol before griff
-
Reckon that'd be pretty close to what they go with though. Maybe Hunt in for Cas or Butler :banghead
-
Will be at the game first time rd 1 in a number of years. Very excited, I reckon we will actually perform strongly in rd 1 unlike many other years.
-
Our 'Grand Final'.....😏
-
Our 'Grand Final'.....😏
I like that, but i would have included with that the next one, the Collingwood game, these first two games really are a must win.

I recon this selection will sum up our year to come.
If he goes with Houli I predict it will be more of the same from the coaches and match committee selecting guys on name or experience rather than form. Markov and MacIntosh are our future so play them starting round 1.
The fact Houli has had an interrupted preseason should automatically mean he misses out until the other guys fail.
-
Reckon you are spot on Big T :thumbsup
-
Houli plays we lose.
-
Houli plays we lose.
I don't know that it is going to be an automatic loss if that happens Dooks, but what Big T has said is right on the money.
If Hardwick is brave enough to play Butler then he has to be brave enough to play Markov and Macca, they are the form players. Drop Hunt, Houli
-
Houli plays we lose.
I think Houli will play - lets face it he is one of Hardwicks untouchables.
I also think we will be too good for Carlton with or without him .

I have a bad vibe with him but a better vibe without him.
Still Carlton $2.90 is overs and tempting

Hasn't Markov's form been pretty average/poor overall this pre season?

Yes but plays the new style and follows orders.
Houli is stuck in 2007 - with his Motorola Razr and double popped collars. He's yesterdays news and NOT our responsibility to accommodate.
-
I'm all for dropping Houli but I'm not sure how that makes Markov "the form player"?
-
I'm all for dropping Houli but I'm not sure how that makes Markov "the form player"?
I thought he was very good in the first game and solid enough in the second. And then played in the twos which I didn't see but that was more to make way for Houli. Same goes for McIntosh in the two senior games he played.
Going on FORM, they have both preformed better than Houli. Houli was putrid in that last game. His kicking is the best thing he has going for him but in the last 12 to 24 months it's gone to poo.
For me it's pretty simple- we are an average side and to get better we need to play players that can actually improve to improve us, and players like Houli, Grigg, Hunt and Hampson have no improvement left, so unless we want more of the same, we need to change and that means change personal.
-
His form and willingness to stick to the game plan was much better than what I saw from Bachar and he's half his age.
-
Houli is an absolute pootruck. #1 in the afl for turnovers. And every team knows when the ball is in his hands to get ready to counter attack, because the low hanging fruit is easy pickings.
Cant kick. Cant adhere to a gameplan. Wont man up. Wont tackle.

Yeah but he makes us multicultural

Richmond has announced it will select third-year forward Dan Butler to make his debut against the Blues on Thursday night, with intrigue also surrounding rookies Mabior Chol and Jason Castagna.
The Tigers have space to upgrade both Chol and Castagna, who have impressed this pre-season, with ruckman Shaun Hampson on the long-term injury list and Chris Yarran retired.
Midfielder Shaun Grigg said Richmond's pre-season had left the club's match committee with some tough decisions ahead of Thursday night.
"Young guys got opportunities and they played well … and boys playing in the VFL have been playing well in the pre-season also," Grigg said.
"So there's a lot of competition for spots, which is really healthy."

Match preview: Carlton v Richmond
Howard Kotton
afl.com.au
March 20, 2017
SUMMARY
These traditional rivals will open the season again on Thursday night in front of a big crowd, and there is plenty at stake for both clubs. After another huge turnover of players at Carlton in the off-season, expectations are low for Brendon Bolton's team on the back of a poor finish to 2016. While the Blues have been far from impressive in the JLT Community Series, there were a few encouraging signs in their final game against Fremantle, notably the form of key prime-movers Patrick Cripps and Matthew Kreuzer. Richmond is also coming off a disappointing end to last season and needs to start well. All Australian defender Alex Rance has returned from hamstring tendonitis and looms as a major stumbling block for the Blues, given their lack of potency in attack.

R2, 2014, Richmond 14.14 (98) d Carlton 12.14 (86) at the MCG
1EF, 2013, Carlton 18.8 (116) d Richmond 14.12 (96) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. When these clubs last met, in round one of 2016 at the MCG, the Blues led by nine points at three-quarter time. Richmond finished strongly, kicking four goals to one to win narrowly. Patrick Cripps was best on ground, earning three Brownlow votes with 27 disposals and one goal.
2. Both clubs struggled in 2016 in several vital statistical categories. In tackling Carlton was 15th and Richmond 18th. The Blues were last in centre clearances and both clubs finished in the bottom four for average goals a game.
3. Richmond has had the better of Carlton recently, winning the past four matches and five of the past seven. The Blues have not won since the 2013 first elimination final at the MCG.
4. At the beginning of this season Richmond has an experience advantage over Carlton, with an average age of 23 years, 344 days to 23 years, 316 days. The Tigers have an average career games of 62 to the Blues' 52.
5. At the MCG in 2016 the Blues lost six of nine games, which included five of their past six. Richmond broke even with seven wins from 14 games, but finished with three losses from its past four games.
6. Patrick Cripps completed a remarkable rise up the Schick Hydro Official AFL Player Ratings last season, climbing from 351st to 44th (447.8 points) to be the Blues' top-ranked player. Richmond's highest-ranked player is key defender Alex Rance at 27th (476.7 points), followed closely by Dustin Martin at 30.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Marc Murphy
The Carlton skipper will make his much-anticipated return after missing the final 12 rounds last season with an ankle injury. The experienced midfielder has enjoyed his first injury-free pre-season in five years and is raring to go, adding plenty of class to the Blues' line-up.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 10 points

RICHMOND
The Tigers have confirmed half-forward Dan Butler will make his debut, but there could be more surprises ahead of Thursday night.
Rookie Jason Castagna impressed over the JLT Community Series and the rookie's pace and defensive pressure in attack is highly rated by the coaching group.
Fellow rookie Mabior Chol also made a strong case in the final pre-season game, but it is likely tall forward Ben Griffiths will be preferred ahead of him in round one.
The club has room to elevate both Castagna and Chol ahead of round one if it chooses. Others who are jockeying for selection are Kamdyn McIntosh and Oleg Markov, who have not been able to establish themselves in the Tigers' best team over the pre-season but have strong credentials.

The team. Lol.
-
Jeez I hope Griffiths doesn't play. He has done stuff all this preseason. And to be honest the last 6 years.
For once I'd just like to go into a game without these soft, lazy, scared footballers.... play the kids.
No Griffiths, BEllis, Houli and Grigg would be a good start.
Would anyone really care if we never saw any of these duds again?... anyone??

Nope.

Unfortunately Griff is needed only for ruck/fwd back up. Granted I'd rather see Chol in despite him not being fully ready but they aren't prepared to play him so that leaves us with Griff

Richmond need a comfortable victory: Watson
By John Takemura
SEN
March 23, 2017
Former Essendon champion Tim Watson says Richmond needs to win tonight’s season opener against Carlton in strong fashion to justify the positive feelings displayed by coach Damien Hardwick.
He believes the majority of the Tigers pre-season form has shown this is a different and exciting team, but admitted to being very concerned with their early efforts in their final game against Collingwood, describing it as the Richmond of old.
“This game for me though is more about Richmond and what they’re going to produce tonight, because there’s been parts of their pre-season games where you’ve looked at them and thought okay this a really different Richmond side,” Watson said on SEN Breakfast.
“Then I saw them when they really went back into their shell and Collingwood went at them hard (in Moe), and it was like the Richmond of old.
“I don’t know whether they’re going to get sustained pressure tonight from Carlton, so maybe at the end of this game we’re going to say they won that game, but what did we really learn about Richmond?
“I think where they’re at, where they’re telling us they’re at, where their coach is telling us they’re at they need to win this game and win it comfortably tonight.”
Carlton won't go ultra-defensive
Carlton has struggled to kick scores during the pre-season, but Watson expects coach Brendon Bolton to not go with a major defensive mindset, as he still trying to teach some of his youngsters the nuances of the game.
“I don’t think they will go super ultra-defensive. He’s still trying to teach them how to play, there’s going to be a lot of young, inexperienced players out there,” he said.
“The expectation is they’re going to get it right part of the time, but then they’re going to lose concentration, or fitness, or whatever at some part during the game.”
He is anticipating that defender Jacob Weitering will play up forward in order to at least give the Blues a target to kick towards.
“He may well end up having to go back there (defence), like if Jack Riewoldt was to light up the MCG tonight then he’s going to be the obvious choice to play on Jack,” Watson said.
“I think they need something more in the front half, because there’s nothing more debilitating or soul destroying by working the ball forward and having no-one being able to capture it there in your forward line.”

Quarter time
Richmond 7.3-45
Carlton 4.3-27
-
don't think Mac is working out down back atm, liked him better further up. The young blokes and the new blokes are kicking arse, Caddy stuffed up a bit, hope that isn't gonna continue lol
-
Goals: Butler 2, Prestia, Cotchin, Martin, Nankervis, Castagna.
Good: We're moving ball quickly and scoring freely. Forward pressure strong at times (Rioli's pressure twice has set up goals). Butler with 2 goals. Ellis actually put his body on the line twice in the quarter :o.
Bad: Defending opposition side of goal is non-existent. Usual suspects doing dumb things gifting opposition goals against run of play.
-
How come Vlastuin didn't get a free when that idiot dropped the shoulder into his head in the middle of the ground and laid him out ?
-
Griffs floated one long and Vlas takes a strong contested mark 30m out. Off to Titch straight in front. Goal :gotigers
Rich 51
Carl 27

How come Vlastuin didn't get a free when that stuffer dropped the shoulder into his head in the middle of the ground and laid him out ?
Umps wearing Blue in first qtr.

Butler arms chopped and then dragged down without ball = no free ::).
Anyway, we get it forward and Dusty nails it :gotigers.

77 - 45
-
Take that one off him, Ump ::).
Lloyd goal :gotigers
Rich 83
Carl 45
-
redeemed himself with that goal
-
WP was right about Houli.
-
Houli is odd, he can do some silky stuff but then he counters it with utter bonehead poo. bit unreliable. Macca improved in the second. What I like is they look fit and they look like they aren't bludging
-
Half-time
Richmond 7.3 13.5-83
Carlton 4.3 7.4-46
Goals: Martin 3, Butler 2, Castagna 2, Prestia, Cotchin, Nankervis, Edwards, Rioli, Lloyd.
-
You have to say though, if they refine this aggressive style, they are going to be awesome.
-
Happy with Griff....Unhappy with Houli......Happy with Conca.......Is Hunt even playing?......Astbury wtf.
-
It's early days and against a rubbish mob but very happy we have finally fixed the no small forwards and crap ruckman issues. Been very happy.
Ellis actually putting head over it.
Hunt will be big whipping boy all year.
Defense conceeding shots on goal just about every 50 entry..
-
You have to say though, if they refine this aggressive style, they are going to be awesome.
Good sides will pick it apart but at least it's entertaining.
-
Houli is odd, he can do some silky stuff but then he counters it with utter bonehead poo. bit unreliable. Macca improved in the second. What I like is they look fit and they look like they aren't bludging
The addition of young speed is making a big difference. We're not getting beaten on the spread nor the ball is easily leaking out of our forward line which happened every week last year. Only time Carlton had momentum was last 5 mins when we slackened off in the midfield.
Macca was good that qtr. Thought Vlas improved as well after looking lost in the preseason.
-
Shoot Grigg Houli and Astbury
-
Time for them to go back into their shells for the second half.
-
Shoot Grigg Houli and Astbury
And hunt
-
Some exciting footy played there - the only thing that concerns me is that Carlton score too easily from the few chances they've had.
-
Rule No. 1 George. Don't handball to a slower ruckman. Kick it yourself.
-
Jack :gotigers.
Rich 89
Carl 46
-
Leave out the over cute stuff, Tiges.
-
Hunt really is a numpty
-
Loyd has to learn how to handball, he is poo at it
-
How fast is castagna ??? if only he kicked the goal lol
-
Back to dumb 2016 Tigers this quarter :banghead.
Finally someone kicks straight (Vlas).
Rich 101
Carl 64
-
yeah went into our shells cept the younger blokes
-
pissantery has begun
-
7 free kicks straight against us
-
Here comes old faithful.lads....
-
Sorry this is pathetic. Mentally weak!
This all began when we started lairising at the start of this qtr when look away handballs that missed targets.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 7.3 13.5 15.11-101
Carlton 4.3 7.4 12.4-76
Goals: Martin 3, Butler 2, Castagna 2, Riewoldt, Prestia, Cotchin, Nankervis, Edwards, Rioli, Lloyd, Vlastuin.
-
No point putting up a fight after the 3/4 siren when we wilted with the footy for the past 30 mins ::).
-
Disappointing football that qtr, my is spot on, danger signs were there early in the qtr when we were showboating a bit with the no look handballs. Settle down and let's run this game out well, we're a 10-12 goal better side than these mugs
-
Each year we expect for the soft underbelly to disappear but every year the same thing occurs. Get a lead have the foot on the opposition's throat and then go and put our feet up and have a snooze.
Getting caught on the transition way too much, literally metres between our defenders and opposition players on the wing. Seem to suddenly look for the easy ball rather than the hard ball we were getting in the first half.
-
Captain Cotch is stinking it up.
Caddy is exactly what my Cats mate said he was. .......Pretender!
-
Martin is elite.
Prestia is a goer.
Castagna is very good.
-
Rioli is sublime
-
Dusty fend off and goal to Rioli :gotigers
Rich 107
Carl 76
-
Maradona Caddy :lol
Rich 114
Carl 76
Dusty's barrel :gobdrop. 100m? :gobdrop
-
It feels like we've killed at centre bounce clearances since half time.
-
Pay that chase by Houli, di not give it up, great pressure, would of been a goal for sure
-
Why wasn't that holding the ball against Simpson? They've paid that HTB all night.
-
stuff ME NANK I LOVE YOU!!!!!
-
Pay that chase by Houli, di not give it up, great pressure, would of been a goal for sure
Best thing he's done tonight. Credit where it's due.
-
Tell you who has been sticking the marks is Griff, has been good in the contest
-
Nanks :gotigers
Rich 120
Carl 77
-
How the actual stuff was that holding the ball, he jumped up took posession and got tackled for fucksakes
-
73,137 at the 'G and a good game for neutrals to watch. There you go, Rucci.
-
How the actual stuff was that holding the ball, he jumped up took posession and got tackled for stuffsakes
Umps have been hot against us. George copped a couple of harsh ones when he was the only one wanting the footy while Blues sat back.
-
Lloyd pushed in back?
-
Dusty :bow :bow :bow :bow
Rich 126
Carl 89
-
If we don't throw a stuffing penthouse apartment, ferrari, Pia, an offshore bank account and a luxury yacht at Dusty, we really are mental
-
Hunt was very clever there :o and Houli actually ran straight and kicked long.
Grigg goal :gotigers
Rich 132
Carl 89
-
Yeah we won :gotigers
-
My biggest beef was the periods were we cough up really easy goals. Better teams will murder us if we do that too often.
-
If we don't throw a stuffing penthouse apartment, ferrari, Pia, an offshore bank account and a luxury yacht at Dusty, we really are mental
Add in a Megan
-
Final Score
Richmond 7.3 13.5 15.11 20.12-132
Carlton 4.3 7.4 12.4 14.5-89
Goals: Martin 4, Butler 2, Castagna 2, Rioli 2, Nankervis 2, Riewoldt, Prestia, Cotchin, Edwards, Lloyd, Vlastuin, Caddy, Grigg.
-
Thought Conca was very good tonight and Dusty was playing at a level few ever reach.
-
Butler is gonna be an absolute gun, he was fast, silky . Castagna as well, the way they swooped on balls that noone had any right to and worked in hard traffic was awesome. The tankier blokes are providing some genuine grunt and we aren't getting pushed around like before, even the little blokes were just barreling in
-
Still can't understand what our ruckman is doing by taking marks, kicking goals and tackling.

preposterous, must get Vickery back
-
Overall really happy with seeing a marked difference in our style of play. Massive change. I'll accept mistakes when we crack in and go for it like that. Just need to fix at how easy we have up goals.
Think Lloyd and Hunt were worst on ground Loyd had an absolute stinker. Thought griff dropped some easy marks and struggled. Rioli wasn't in the game but stands out with class at the right moments. Prestia and Nankervis very impressive, Caddy bit quiet but important big body. Conca was very good and didn't try and do to much a hallmark of his game. Georgie boy and Butler wow add so much spark. Dusty omg what a unit.
Add Markov in to replace Hunt and run out of defence will look a lot better.
-
Yeah, Markov has tons more going for him, including courage lol
-
Unfortunately that little fumble soccer thingy Hunt did late in the game will keep him in the team for at least another dozen games ::)
-
Enjoyed Prestia tonight. That swooping goal in 2nd q was 24k
-

Conca? The guy who ran underneath an uncontested ball to totally miss it.
-
I thought Carlscums backs kept us in it. They are a bottom 6 side maybe bottom 4. We are marginally better but if we play like we did in the third against a good team we will be shredded.
A win is a win but I'm not jumping up and down in amazement at our performance.
-
I thought Butler , Castagna and Rioli were awesome . Good times ahead .
Was Cotchin even on the ground in the third . Missing persons report .
Conca was good . Lloyd had a stinker .
Dusty will win the brownlow this year . All hail Dustin .
Pretty pleased with everything , such a contrast to rd 1 2016.

Normally it's our kicking that lets us down, but how bad was our handballing? So many handball turnovers.
-
Happy with tackling and new recruits. Agree Lloyd had a shocking game. Thought Cotchin had a quiet game as did Griffiths and Ellis. Martin and Rioli pure class.
-
They all can't play well each week
Vlaustin only worrying sign
Seems lost
Everyone else played there role

Vlaustin looked a lot better when they sent him back in the final quarter
Player who I was most disappointed in was Astbury. talk about a momentum killer. Throw in poor decision making and poor skill execution and you have a massive chink in the backline.
He also had at least 4 though I think it was 5 score assists .......to Carlton
-
Sing Nank. Enjoy it mate
-
Heaps of improvement to come from that game.
Cotchin, Rance and Riewoldt were all down on their best form.
A lot of players had poor performances; Astbury, Griffiths, Lloyd, Houli, Grigg, Hunt
I hope we get a KPF and KPD from our two first round picks this year or in two years time we will be stuffed.
-
Very happy with the result. I didnt realise how bad Carlton are. Particularly their defence. I guess the real test will come next week.
Best game ever for Martin. Castagna wow could have ended up with a bag of 4-5 if he kicked straighter.
NANKERVIS :clapping
Prestia is quality.
Houli instructed to handball. Less turnovers.
Vlastuin 12 tackles.
Rioli :thumbsup
-
Captain Cotchin was very poor.
Vice Captain Rance was beaten by another youngster.
Vice Captain Reiwoldt was also very poor IMO.
One positive is that we were able to win convincingly even though these three leaders had pretty poor games by their own standards that said we were only playing the cheats who most punters have finishing bottom 2.
These guys are going to have to play to a higher standard than the rubbish they dished up last night.
-
A lot of players had poor performances; Astbury, Griffiths, Lloyd, Houli, Grigg, Hunt
Grigg? Not my favourite player, but thought he was good last night. Much better than 'poor' anyway.

He is a squib and does not lower his eyes when kicking, numerous times last night had players in his line of vision and what did we see; a great big floating stuffing helicopter kick that went 50 metres in the air for 30 metres gained.
-
Just on Cotchin he had 21 disposals at 81% DE
Had 12 contested possession (2nd most for us)
8 Clearances (most for us)
8 tackles (2nd most)
5 inside 50s (3rd most)
Named 3rd best for us in official game results
So not bad for someone who apparently played so poorly or was not sighted.
-
Okay performance for mine (although I was tipping us to lose). We held momentum for most of the game but leaked goals which kept them in it until about halfway through the last.
Happy with the recruits.
Liked what I saw from Castagna, just need to work on his finishing - perhaps a little overawed by the crowd?
Happy with the A graders, Dusty obviously had one of the great BOG performances. Cotch - did what he had to, Jack lead well down forward. Rance probably had the quietest game of our fab 4, but still proved he was AA standard player on a number of occasions. Weitering didn't kick 3 on Rance, he kicked 3, 2 of which his direct opponent was Astbury - whom I was very disappointed with.

Could it have been the knock he took in the first Q?
Thought he did a lot of good things in the 3rd and last Q particularly.

Vlastuin took a great mark . Very courageous. Resulted in a goal too .
-
We missed a couple of easy goals through lairising or showboating which was disappointing. To make things worse Carlton whisked to ball up the other end to make the classic 12 point play .
But overall very happy .
The chemistry between Butler, Castagna and Rioli was a real stand out for me . Exciting times ahead.
-
Very satisfied to get a win by 7 goals.
That's a tick.
Carlton are woeful, a really poor team.
I think our season will start next Thursday night.
-
The only disaster last night was my bloody digital recorder failed to record the game . Can you believe it !!! Dying to sit back and watch a replay. Any one help a brother out ??

If you want something a little better than the rubbish they put on replay at afl.com.au then try finding a torrent of the replay in a few days?

Have a look at his squibs and up and under kicks.

Grigg was arse.

Commentators saying Cotchin's mark was a bump ball when it clearly bounced off his hands...

Their tall backs did enough to keep Riewoldt and Griffiths quiet. Mate said we are stuffed if we are going to rely on Griffiths all yr but we all knew that anyway.
I have not had a look at the game and dont know if i will even be arsed doing it, but a couple of tiger mates were really impressed with the potential of most of Their young talls.
I actually thought when the teams were named they went in way too tall and then they lost lamb and replaced him with another tall.
I suppose thats what its about for them and Bolton searching for a spine and good structure and forgoing a bit of run and grunt in the short term.
-
I'm not a Grigg fan but I though he was very good last night.

OK, I saw the game live, watched the replay twice & failed to notice either him squibbing or doing any up and under kicks.
Happy to be corrected if you can point me to any

1st quarter the camera was right behind Grigg and you could see Riewoldt leading and screaming for the ball, what did Grigg do, kick it straight up in the air.

You can have your opinion on him, his game, and his squibbing but you can't blatantly lie about his up and under kicks!
-
I thought he was summoning rain clouds myself. He was like a cat finding out a cucumber was behind him and panicked lol

:lol

Grigg is mega average. This is worse than a dud as he keeps his spot at the expense of getting games into someone else. Provides very little with his disposals.

1Qtr 16.20 remaining to be exact although the replay doesn't show it as clear where JR was leading up and then had to back track as Grigg kicked his helibomb
-
Its hard to believe we won so convincingly without Jake Batchelor in the side .
