Tigers’ next challenge: End Demon hoodoo
Andrew Hamilton,
Herald-Sun
April 17, 2017
RICHMOND has made its best start to a season in 22 years after rolling through the Lions by 52 point at the Gabba.
It’s Richmond’s best start to a season since 1995 — when it made the preliminary final — but coach Damien Hardwick is keeping the lid firmly on, turning his focus to an Anzac Day eve blockbuster against Melbourne, a team the Tigers haven’t beaten since 2013.
“Outside the footy club things will be beat up, but the reality is we’re four rounds into a long season,” he said.
“We haven’t beaten Melbourne I think for the last three years so that’ll certainly be my focus.
“And they’ll be smarting after a loss on the weekend (to Fremantle) so there’ll be two teams going hammer and tongs.”

Every time we're about to play Melbourne, Garry Lyon comes out and makes out the game is virtually Melbourne's grand final to pump them up.
Tonight, it was "Monday against Richmond will be Melbourne's most important match since the club last played finals". Oh please! :chuck

Melbourne expect spearhead Jesse Hogan to be available for what looms as an important AFL clash against the unbeaten Richmond.
Hogan has been dealing with a family health issue and spent time in his home state of Western Australia while serving a two-game ban for striking.
But with his suspension over, captain Nathan Jones expects Hogan to be named for the MCG clash next Monday as the Demons look to get their season back on track after consecutive losses.

Avoid the queues - arrive early!
Security procedures such as bag checks and patron scanning will again be in place as fans make their way into the stadium. This process will lead to minor delays, so it is recommended that you arrive by around 6.15-6.30pm, as those who arrive later may miss the pre-game ceremony.
Plan your trip - Swan Street Bridge works
Work has commenced on an upgrade to Swan Street Bridge. Lane closures on the bridge will lead to traffic congestion and additional travel time. We therefore recommend fans plan ahead and take an alternative route, or avoid driving all the way to the MCG and catch public transport instead.
CAR PARKING
Due to expected demand, car parking space in Yarra Park will be limited. We therefore recommend fans avoid driving all the way to the MCG if possible.
After the final siren, vehicles parked in Yarra Park will be held back for a period of time until pedestrians have safely cleared the precinct. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Richmond FC members can access $8 match day parking at 114 Flinders Street by pre-booking online here and entering the promotional code: TIGER.

Match preview: Richmond v Melbourne
AFL.com.au
19 April 2017
SUMMARY
Richmond is rolling and 4-0 for the first time since 1995, creating an ideal platform to qualify for finals after a horror 2016. A new attacking game style is working and personnel and role changes over the off-season have proved inspired. But how long will it last? And is this a false dawn for the Tigers, who it must be said have beaten three bottom eight teams from 2016 in their four wins? The Anzac Day eve clash against Melbourne will provide some answers, and we will have a good idea of Richmond's credentials in the two weeks that follow, with clashes against Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs. Melbourne is similarly trying to establish itself as a top-eight team, but the two-point loss to Fremantle was a poor slip-up, with a seven-goals-to-none third quarter exposing their weaknesses. The 2-2 Demons will be out to produce four quarters of their best football – something they haven't been able to do in the past fortnight – and they will push Richmond if they can do that.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Monday, April 24, 7.25pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R5, 2016, Melbourne 20.9 (129) d Richmond 14.12 (96) at the MCG
R4, 2015, Melbourne 12.11 (83) d Richmond 6.15 (51) at the MCG
R9, 2014, Melbourne 14.7 (91) d Richmond 9.20 (74) at the MCG
R8, 2013, Richmond 15.16 (106) d Melbourne 11.6 (72) at the MCG
R15, 2012, Richmond 13.23 (101) d Melbourne 11.12 (78) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Melbourne star Max Gawn, who will be missing on Monday night with a hamstring injury, was the difference the last time these sides met, collecting three Brownlow votes and dominating the ruck with 47 hit-outs and four clearances.
2. There is a big contrast in how these teams have played this season. The Demons are ranked second for disposals (averaging 418.5 a game), compared to the Tigers, who rank 16th (356 a game).
3. There is also a big difference between how the Tigers of 2017 and the Tigers of 2016 play. Richmond leads the AFL for long kicks (it ranked 10th last year), and it ranks 18th for kicks backwards (it ranked seventh last year).
4. Richmond will be looking for five consecutive wins to start the season for the first time since 1995. Melbourne will be hoping to be 3-2 after five games for the first time since 2010.
5. Melbourne has won the past three clashes between these sides, ending Richmond’s run of four consecutive wins. The Demons haven’t won four in a row over the Tigers since 2004-06.
6. After two years in decline in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, Richmond defender Reece Conca is fit and climbing back up. He started the season at No.589 overall and has moved 72 places to No.517.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Jesse Hogan.
The young Melbourne star let his team down by striking Carlton's Sam Rowe off the ball in round two, earning himself a two-match suspension. He then travelled to Perth for time off and was filmed smoking a cigarette at a music festival, which the club said was not a good look. He is available for the Anzac Eve game and the Demons need to see a response from him, not only to get him back on track but to give themselves the best chance of knocking off the favoured Tigers.
PREDICTION: Richmond by six points

Hope we win by more than 6 points. My blood pressure will not cope with a close run race.
-
yeah, ideally more than six goals would make me happy, we owe these bastards a good flogging
-
If Watts kills it like he always does will be spewing always one good game against us.

Telecast has been moved from 7 to 7mate to accommodate MKR ::) ::)

“I think our fans have the right to be excited . . . it’s our best start in a little while,” Cotchin said ahead of the big Anzac Day Eve clash with Melbourne at the MCG on Monday.
“It’s a tough game being a player, it’s a tough game being a supporter that has been starved of success for a long period of time, and haven’t had quite the start that we have this year.
“We owe it to them to enjoy it.
“That’s what we’re looking forward to about Monday night . . . two proud clubs that are going into battle on a special night, where we remember current-serving soldiers, and the past as well.”

A reminder the game is on 7mate tonight.
MKR bumps AFL's Anzac Day eve clash to 7mate, but league not fussed
Anthony Colangelo
The Age
24 April 2017
The AFL has no issue with the Seven Network demoting the Melbourne versus Richmond Anzac Day eve clash to 7mate in favour of ratings behemoth My Kitchen Rules, however the Demons are not totally satisfied with the decision.
Seven will broadcast Monday night's wannabe-blockbuster fixture on 7mate around Australia – including Melbourne, which is a rarity – because it's 7:25pm kick-off pits it against MKR's 7:30pm start. And despite the AFL wanting to make the Anzac Day-eve match a tradition, a league spokesperson said there was no problem with the game playing second fiddle to a cooking show on 7mate.
"We understand MKR is a successful show for the Seven Network and showing this game on 7mate is just part of the relationship between the broadcaster and the league," the spokesperson said.
"7mate regularly broadcasts AFL into Sydney, Perth and Brisbane and so it's not an issue for us." But a spokesman for the Melbourne Football Club said they would "obviously" prefer the game to be on the main channel, but the decision was out of their hands.
Richmond has no issue with the decision, so long as the match is on free-to-air TV. Sydney and Brisbane tune into most matches on 7mate and those ratings are significantly lower than what Seven's main channel attracts for the same games in Melbourne and Adelaide. Seven said 7mate ratings in Perth were very strong and that the channel was known for its sport content which has included the AFL, AFLW, international women's football, NFL and golf.
MKR attracted 1.65 million viewers on Easter Monday and has averaged 1.23 million viewers the past five Mondays.
Of those five weeks it was the top rated show nationally twice, and second on one other occasion.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is against the Anzac Day eve clash – which began between the Demons and Tigers last year – saying it would ruin a tradition that was working well. "If you have the same sort of thing the night before, it's like having Christmas twice," McGuire said on his Triple M breakfast program in 2014.
"I just shake my head sometimes and go 'Why do we go after the things that are working and tamper with them'.
"People will think I'm talking through my pocket at Collingwood, but part of having something significant is the exclusivity of it."
An impressive 59,968 people turned up to the MCG to see Richmond defeated by Melbourne last year on a Sunday night.
The game's demotion to 7mate is yet another difficult chapter in the AFL's fraught relationship with Monday night footy.
After the last Monday night game was played in 2014, the league showed it had given up on the idea with no Monday night games played in 2015 and 2016.
That came after eight Monday night games were played between 2009 and 2014, of which St Kilda played in six.
The AFL has now committed to starting its rounds earlier, with eight Thursday night games in its 2017 fixture, following five last year.

C'mon Tiges. Strong start :pray.
-
2 mistakes from Ellis in the first two mins.
-
Geez
-
We haven't been past CHB yet :P.
-
Jack :gotigers
We got over the back fortunately.
Rich 6
Melb 2
-
Too much handballs
Melbourne lots of pressure
-
Jackkkkkkkkkkkkkk :gotigers
Nice falcon assist from Elton :snidegrin.
Rich 12
Melb 3
-
Too easy for them, Tiges :banghead.
-
Dusty don't argue and nails the pass to Castagna 30m out directly in front. Misses.
13 - 9
-
Dumb down the ground free when we had the extra numbers and then we went to sleep manning up :banghead. Lucky they missed.
13 - 10
-
Deliberate paid against Astbury ::).
-
Ffs wtf
-
Too many stuffing handballs
-
We look unbalanced especially in these wet conditions. A inside ballwinner Miles would be handy now instead of both Markov and Menadue.
-
Obvious free kick
Rubbish play
Cut the umpire bashing
-
Jack is having some game. What vision. Finds Castagna. Doesn't miss this time :gotigers.

The ::) was more for our stupid play.
Getting in early lol
;D
The umps have actually been kind to us early (Grimes was deliberate OOB).
-
Quarter time
Richmond 3.1-19
Melbourne 3.4-22
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Castagna
-
Did anyone notice what Dusty did when the siren sounded?
A perfect Rugby pass.
:lol
-
They seem to have a mobile player on the outside of every contested ball. We get it and it's just kicked or handballing to a player standing still. If the inside 50's continue as it is it will get very ugly.
-
Getting smashed at the centre bounces 1-5 even though Nanks is winning the hitouts. The Dees are getting far more numbers to the fall of the ball.
20 less disposals and inside 50s: 5 - 19. Even though we're super efficient, we're not going to win with being on track for just 20 inside 50s for the game :help.
Can we keep Brandon away from our backline? :help
-
Ellis in 2016 form tonight :P.
-
Great stuff Nanks. 3 efforts :clapping
-
Rioli hands to Jack for his 3rd :gotigers.
Rich 25
Mel 22
-
Not bringing in Miles was a mistake.
-
Need to win the clearances
-
Fumbles and mistackles caused that goal :banghead.
25 - 30
-
Not bringing in Miles was a mistake.
This!
-
Stuffed that up big time :banghead.
26 - 30
-
Has Caddy play a worse game? Terrible.
-
Brandon is giving Caddy a run for his money for worst game. 2016 version tonight :facepalm.
Can we actually have someone defensive side of stoppages tonight?
-
Brandon again :banghead.
That was high on Georgie btw but paid HTB.
-
No intent this. We're gone
-
Really worried.
Want do our players want?
-
Very soft from too many Tigers so far.
26 - 42
-
Miles should have played.
-
Is cotchin playing.
The captain had to start leading. Should look at the Selwood playbook.
-
Out the back of the pack. Rioli taps to Grigg and Butler goals :gotigers.
We finally win a centre clearance but the long bomb is a point.
Rich 34
Mel 42
-
We will lose by 50 points. Unless there's a miricle.
-
We will win
Also, Markov should play every game when fit
-
HTB?
Rioli snap misses.
35 - 42
-
Useless imposters
-
Poor Tiges. No crumbers up forward and then burnt on transition.
-
How bout dat umpiring
-
Out of the centre and the ball falls to Butler 50m out. Hands to Short and he bombs it OOTF :P
-
LOL. The smother was too good and we get a point.
36 - 48
-
Dee defender panics and kicks it OOTF.
Grigg goals from the boundary on the siren :gobdrop :gotigers.
42 - 48
-
Grigger!
-
Half-time
Richmond 3.1 6.6-42
Melbourne 3.4 7.6-48
Goals: Riewoldt 3, Castagna, Butler, Grigg
-
Lucky to be only a goal down. Some very dumb and soft footy for most of that quarter. Regained some stability momentum in the last 5-10 mins.
-
Caddy has been above reasonable
-
Currently on a round trip of Australia , watching the game from crystal brook in south oz. good test of the boys this game will be. Super hard at it, if we can come back I think we are well on the road towards a good year. I've found caddy to be disappointing
-
Dees manic at the contests, plenty of run and better disposal efficiency in the conditions. If they can maintain that for four quarters then good luck to them. We still score very easily once inside 50 so if the game opens up I still think we can hurt them.
-
2nd to the ball. No run. Poor skills.
I can't see us winning this.
Elton is really useless.
Cotchin too quiet needs to impose himself and lead the team to victory.
Nankervis is excellent.
-
Elton is playing?
-
Caddy has to pull his finger out, cleaned it up a bit in the second but was poohouse in first. The umps need to stop giving bs free kicks to them in front of their goals and start paying some of ours. Looks like we have switched on a bit. Cannot believe Rance didn't get cracked ribs, paid them back at least
-
Man ...What's the inside 50s count . Lucky to be so close .
-
Nankervis is doing it all LOL how bout his tripple tackle chase combo
-
Dees own us at the moment .
-
Disposals: 160 - 205 ( contested: 84 - 93 )
Clearances: 23 - 21 ( centre: 5 - 7 )
Inside 50s: 20 - 39 ( marks in50: 3 - 3 )
Tackles: 47 - 49
Hitouts: 28 - 16

You know we are losing when Ellis has the most disposals
-

Elton is playing?
No
He's in attendance though
-
You know we are losing when Ellis has the most disposals
:lol
-
Caddy with the final clearance of the quarter sending the football deep in to attacking 50, ultimately resulting in the Grigg goal right on half time. The Tigers ended that quarter with a streak of six consecutive clearances; Caddy with two of the six.
We had 6 of the last 7 scoring shots before half-time.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/5/rich-v-melb
-
Nankervis is doing it all LOL how bout his tripple tackle chase combo
Was so busy he didn't have time to hunch over with his hands on his knees
-
Cant remember being so angry at the footy, dees are just a footy side I stuffing hate! They bring the worst out of me, always so cocky and really bring it against us like they know we'll crack. Just wish someone would do A Balme and lay out hogan, watts, Jones and Viney the cocky pricks!
The umps have killed us in front of both goals, butler should've got a free.
We stopped th bleeding a bit towards the end of the qtr we really need to start winning the contests have been absolutely murdered around the ball.
Get into it tigers!
-
Considering the number of passengers we have to halftime if only half of them turn it around in the second half we have to improve. Prestia and Cotch really need to step it up, maybe worth getting Rioli more involved as he seems to do the impossible at times and it might just be his clearance that leads to a scoring opportunity. Just have a horrible feeling that if its close the umps will decide this one. Cannot believe how many seemingly perfect tackles we lay for no reward and every Dees tackle seems to get paid immediately.
-
Dusty is having a shocker tonight, crap handballs left right and centre
-
Our players are so damn fumbly- just then Hoult drops and fumbles a simple slow moving kick through for a behind just completely unecessary.
Houli, Ellis, Grimes, Ashbury and Butler have been the worst at it
-
Someone man up on that fat stuff hibberd
-
Cant stand this minnow club filthy cheats afl turned a blind eye on them on tanking issue.
-
Dusty shouldnt be playing
-
That is the third or fourth time I have seen Rance not get rid of the stuffing ball and get owned
-
Astbury so so weak for a guy that big
-
Dumb kicks inside F50 :banghead.
And then gift them an easy goal at the other end due to our ballwatching :banghead
42 - 55
-
Clearances....
-
Hardwick should be sacked for not playing Miles. Had to play in these conditions
-
Elton Facepalm
-
That's 2 falcons for Elton tonight, at least get your hands on it son
-
Another dumb mistake (Butler) gifts them a goal :banghead
-
Elton Facepalm
Why oh why do we persist with this dud
-
GAGF'd Hardwick u stuffen dud
-
We are a rabble
-
I thought we picked a team with added speed tonight? ::)
Miles not playing has been a huge selection error.
-
Markov and menadue shouldn't be playing tonight. Poor selection
-
Pick up th stuffing ball you stuffing hacks!
-
Another fumble ::)
-
Crumbers ballwatching again expecting Jack to fly and win the ball at ground level.
Lucky Menadue gets a free 45m out. Shanks it. Lambert's soccer hits the post.
43 - 61
-
Game over, will be a blowout
stuff I hate losing To these cheating minnows
-
Nice read and kick by Prestia hits up Jack 45m out. Misses.
44 - 61
-
Lambert long. Jack flies against two. Keeps his feet and kicks the goal :gotigers.
4 to Jack
Rich 50
Mel 61
-
Jack and prestia gonna win it themselves
-
Missing to many shots on goal.Kick them Jack.
-
:shh
-
Fumble fumble fumble and the range gets in hard moves it forward and bang goal
Ashbury you are a gummy mate, absolute stuffing gumby
-
Now no bastard knows what to do in defence near goal because of that prick umpire
-
Please get rid of Astbury. Has cost us a lot tonight
-
DON"T HANDBALL BACKWARDS IN THE WET YOU IDIOTS :banghead. We gift them a goal straight back :banghead
And then another as Astbury didn't know what to do because he couldn't rush it through :banghead
50 - 73
-
Martin should not have played.Agree onced it rained Miles should have come in loves this footy.Plenty of speed in the guts just not running hard enough and silly errors.
-
Melb are the walking wounded and still beating us :banghead
-
Once again no one defensive side of the stoppages allows them to run it out of our F50 :banghead. Been happening all night :banghead
-
Astbury u are a stuffen dud!!! Please pee off to another club
-
To many silly errors school boy stuff. :banghead.
-
It's a crap rule made worse by dumb footballers, stop hand balling backwards!!!!! In these conditions
-
Once again no one defensive side of the stoppages allows them to run it out of our F50 :banghead. Been happening all night :banghead
Hold the coach to account for stuffen once!
-
I don't blame Astbury, I blame poo umpiring putting doubt in his mind making it so stuffing hard to do anything except concede a goal, if he picks it up, he gets tackled, if he concedes a behind its a free shot at goal, boundary, free shot at goal , what the actual stuff is he meant to do?
-
Cotch finds Short 40m out. Misses.
51 - 73
-
It's a crap rule made worse by dumb footballers, stop hand balling backwards!!!!!
It's 2016 version of the Tigers all over again. Dumb coaching, dumb game plan and dumb and soft footballers
-
That was a mark?
-
apparently not
-
Stevic at his best
Pity we are playing so crap
-
I don't blame Astbury, I blame poo umpiring putting doubt in his mind making it so stuffing hard to do anything except concede a goal, if he picks it up, he gets tackled, if he concedes a behind its a free shot at goal, boundary, free shot at goal , what the actual stuff is he meant to do?
Not pooting himself would be a good start
-
Elton is scared of the ball
-
Geez we've fumbled and hesistated in possession tonight and it's cost us dearly :banghead
And we miss again (prestia) :banghead
52 - 73
-
Just not good enough
Geez it burns saying that against this mob
-
apparently they can throw the stuffing ball all night or drop it
-
well they have been farming top draft picks for the past decade or so, was bound to start paying off sooner or later
-
If you didn't think Caddy was slow then watch this game again and you'll see clearly how slow he is.
-
Lovely tap Nanks to Prestia who finds grigg. Another shot after the siren. He also misses :banghead
Same number of scoring shots but we're down 20 :banghead
3/4 time
Richmond 3.1 6.6 7.11-53
Melbourne 3.4 7.6 11.7-73
Goals: Riewoldt 4, Grigg, Castagna, Butler.
-
1.5 to 4.1 that quarter. Bad (goal)kicking is bad footy as they say.
We always dish up this grinding crap against the rah-rahs :banghead.
-
May be the hopeful tiger in me talking but I think we'll win. We've done enough to hang in, couple
Bounces go our way and we just might turn it around.
-
someone needs to crush Viney's larynx for him too
-
I cannot stand watching tigers when they place like this. Lack of intensity and generally flat.
You can't expect to play finals when you lose these games.
We should run over the top of the here but of course we all know that we won't.
-
Has Prestia ever kicked a running goal? Seems totally lost when the goals are in front of him. They have no ruckman and another player down. Good test for how hard this side is prepared to run. Our last quarter's have been strong so by rights we should be capable of out running them.
-
In all fairness every stuffing bounce of th ball has gone their way tonight, just hate it bc we let this club bully us, I'd rather go down swinging and go all out attack than die a death of a thousand cuts trying to hang on playing negative 2016 footy. Go for broke and make these downhill skiers worry about going the other way, ATM they are just bossing every single contest, we've rarely won a stoppage tonight, got to have a crack
-
So many were just ball watching while packs of Melbourne players ran the ball back the other way, jogging it in lazily...have they all got the flu, or Ebola or something?
-
I cannot stand watching tigers when they place like this. Lack of intensity and generally flat.
You can't expect to play finals when you lose these games.
We should run over the top of the here but of course we all know that we won't.
Yep. They have injuries on the bench which would be affecting their rotations but they are running harder and getting more numbers to the ball :-\.
-
And they are 2 men down
Smh
-
Another bomb where they mark it ::)
-
Maybe we can bury them in the final....LOL
-
Cotch quick snap off the side of the boot OOTF :P
We get it back by the boundary 50 out by Prestia also kicks it OOTF off the side of the boot :P.
-
Dusty on the run from 50 shanks the kick but Jack marks it between the posts. 5 to Jack :gotigers
Rich 59
Mel 73
-
What happened to this no other player within 3 metres rule and yet Jack has 2 stuffing men on the mark?
-
Dusty runs towards the bpundary on 50 has a bomb for a point. Jack not happy.
60 - 73
-
How slow was Caddy
-
Prestia inside 50. Jack almost marks it on the 2nd/3rd grab but Menadue crumbs and finds Rioli 20m out. Goallllll :gotigers

Cannot complain about Houli tonight,

Elton channeling Angus Graham.
-
Stupid Bachar.

Prestia didn't hel him though

Elton finally holds one :o :snidegrin

Take the fighting comeback win :thumbsup but we were also lucky they ran out of legs with 2 on the bench. We won't get away with those first 3 quarters next week.
Jack awesome :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow.
-
I apologise
-
5.5 to 0.2 in the last :clapping.
Final Score
Richmond 3.1 6.6 7.11 12.16-88
Melbourne 3.4 7.6 11.7 11.9-75
Goals: Riewoldt 6, Grigg, Castagna, Butler, Rioli, Caddy, Martin.
-
We will lose by 50 points. Unless there's a miricle.
Well i probably went a tad early. Look a real idiot now. :rollin
I can't believe it really. I'm so glad I was wrong.
Got to say the way we were playing it didn't look good. Their ruck going down really helped. Cotch was enormous in the second half and Martin too. Jack was brilliant.
Well done boys. :gotigers
-
Rioli nursing his hand a bit hope it is just a knock
-
Played a quarter of footy and won. Next week we will truely find out where we sit, great test and u don't care if we lose just as long as we turn up for 4 quarters !!
-
Rioli is holing his hand - hurt?
-
Just looked a bit ginger, but he shook hands with some kids so could be just a bruise or something
-
I apologise
X2

Good call
-
I support the fact they have lost players and now their season should collapse
-
Yessssss I called it! :lol
Go and EAD dees you stuffing minnows!
Viney, Jones and Hogan weren't chirping and getting in our faces in the final qtr were they? :shh
Tonight I am a happy man, that's what happens when you just run and throw caution into the wind, their downhill skiers started worrying about our run and stopped running fwd of the ball. Yes they were 2 down but the intensity and the momentum switched from 1st min of the last when dees still would've been ok so I'm not going to play our last qtr down.
Run run run and not many can keep up with us
-
Cannot complain about Houli tonight,
He was immense in the second half, clean, hard at th contest with intensity and rarely got beaten. Him and Conca were all over it
-
Just heard Griff copped another concussion in VFL, will be out maybe 12 weeks
-
Thank you Bachar and Reece :bow
-
I think we can add Astbury to the list of Hero's tonight as well!
Kept hogan to one goal and free'd up Rance to run riot in defence.
Was unlucky with the rushed behind call and had an absolute brain fade when he tried to Shepard the ball through and Hogan kicked it but that aside he was more than solid.
-
Just want to add Roos's first words post game were "well yeah Melbourne WERE two down for the secondhalf".
Suck eggs Roosy
-
Noticed Rioli had an issue with his hand, might hear more of that given the short break. With Griffiths out indefinitely maybe we bite the bullet and elevate both Soldo and Chol, surely couldn't be worst than Elton who tonight contested but apart from that just had no impact.
-

Hogan kicked 3. Astbury can be very dumb at times, but he's going ok this season.

For his health later in life, he really should retire poor bloke

Agree with that.

He kept crow barring that in too.
Was so great, I don't care the circumstances. Viney and Melksham are two of the lippiest campaigners I would love to cross one day. Very punchable mouths.
-
That's the thing with astbury, overall he's very strong 1on1 and beat Hogan comfortably in th contest tonight but 3 times he had a shocking brain explosion and also let himself get out bodied by Garlett which is just :gobdrop.
If he could just cut that crap out...
-

I agree Tony. The AFL should step in when this circumstance arises. They have a duty of care to the player and legal propriety to protect. If a player is retired his worth should be determined ala free agency and the affected club given a draft pick as compensation.
-
If hogan could have caught the ball in that last quarter the Dees could have won. He dropped 3 or 4 about 30m out. All contested hard gets in the wet but we were lucky it wasnt his night.

Wouldn't have dropped it if someone threw him a pack of Winnie Blues :shh

Good game by Caddy. Great to beat Dees.
-
Great night, great atmosphere, great win, enjoying the ride
-
Fantastic
The will to win says it all
-
A great win that one. You have to single out Houli and Grigg. Others probably played better but they both played quality games.
Re: Elton. He is the worst player I've seen in 20 years. Wtf is wrong with that bloke. Ball bouncing off his head was comical.
Can people honestly say that Chol cannot do better?
-
Houli was excellent last night - particularly in the last. Cops it a lot on this board but he's comfortably best 22 and will be for a couple years yet.
-
I thought Nank was outstanding. His second efforts and tackling great to see. Really happy we got him to this club. Butler continues to impress as does Rioli.

Yep 2 goals from stupid brain fades from Astbury. And then as someone else mentioned, to allow a human tea towel in Garlett to out body you was well embarrassing. It was an Elton moment. You know last week -v- Bristol when little Claye Beams out marked Elton :rollin
-
While Melbourne was down 2 in the 2nd half
We were one short for the entire game. :snidegrin
-
:lol
I would also like to make special mention of markov, was isolated one out about 4-5 times in the goal square and got the spoil away each time, you could feel the pressure he was under and came through with flying colours - its moments like that that help a player grow and develop
-
Markov will never die wondering, thought he was going to get hospitalised a few times but he keeps rolling with the hits.
-
Glad we won.
Always nice to beat Melbourne.
Adelaide over there will be a massive letdown.
We are still unproven against quality opposition.
-

Someone always comes up with a reason we were "lucky" and the favourite is usually "lucky the other team didn't kick straight. Well, Melbourne were lucky it wasn't our night in front of the sticks. Can find "what ifs" for any scenario, at the end of the day it doesn't matter
-

One can say his hip and shoulder on Jake Spencer was brutal and went a long way in winning us the match. Puts his body on the line. :clapping

We were probably lucky they were two blokes down....but having blokes go down also often inspires sides to dig deep.....as for goal kicking - we had 8 more scoring shots in the end and were even at three quarter time with us 7-11 and them 11-7...so they were actually kicking straighter than us up until that point so if anything, we should've won by more.... :shh

Good technique, good pace getting to the ball. Solid footballer is Markov, I reckon he will become a real ripper.
-
His spoil in the last quarter was critical.
-
His spoil in the last quarter was critical.
Yep he sprinted back with Garlett from the centre square.
-
Good lad.
Already leaves some regulars looking like the enabled babies they are.
-
Like him a lot. Just needs about an extra 10 - 15 extra kegs on his frame.

I see Goodwin agrees with me a gave Houli a vote as one of his best players. (Boom tish)
Rance is stiff!!

So who wanted Houli dropped ?

And still do. I recon Cellis could fill his roll nicely.

Exactly :shh but that only counts if we were the lucky ones who kicked accurately ::)
-
Grimes played a very good game and glad to see it was recognised as such.
