GWS playing two in a row at home? Thought the interstate sides always alternated H & A fixtures with their local rivals?
-
GWS are only just going atm and playing bruise free footy .
If we can find our mojo again we are definitely in with a chance .
Who would of predicted Melbourne would smash the Crows . Its that kind of year .
Team selection is vital .

They will play the contested mark game and it will be like taking candy off a baby, we will get well and truly smacked, whenever a team has be out of sorts it seems when they finally find their mojo its usually against the Tigers, we have the undeniable ability to play opposition teams back into form.

Match preview: Greater Western Sydney v Richmond
Adam Curley
afl.com.au
15 May 2017
SUMMARY
These two teams couldn't have been further apart after round eight, with Giants coming off a thrilling last-minute win over Collingwood, and the Tigers suffering a heartbreaking loss after the siren to the Dockers. It will be tough, but Richmond must find a way to move on quickly and get their heads right for a daunting trip to Spotless Stadium, and they'll give themselves a sniff given the Giants' injury toll continues to mount. GWS midfielder Josh Kelly is just about the form player of the competition at the moment, and with Dylan Shiel, Callan Ward, Tom Scully and Lachie Whitfield as support, the home side's midfield is imposing. Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and fellow star Dustin Martin will have plenty of responsibility, as will Toby Nankervis, who will enjoy his battle with another aggressive ruckman in Giant Shane Mumford.
WHERE AND WHEN: Spotless Stadium, Saturday, May 20, 4.35pm
LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R19, 2016, GWS Giants 17.9 (111) d Richmond 3.5 (23) at Manuka Oval
R14, 2015, Richmond 10.18 (78) d GWS Giants 10.9 (69) at the MCG
R19, 2014, Richmond 13.11 (89) d GWS Giants 8.14 (62) at the MCG
R10, 2014, Richmond 24.10 (154) d GWS Giants 5.11 (41) at Spotless Stadium
R22, 2013, Richmond 25.13 (163) d GWS Giants 6.6 (42) at Spotless Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. GWS thrashed Richmond from the opening bounce when the teams last played, kicking eight goals to one behind in the first quarter, and the Tigers managed only 1.2 in the first half.
2. No team has been better in the clearances this season than the Giants, who are ranked first averaging 42.3 per game. They're also ranked second in centre clearances, with Richmond equal 16th.
3. Richmond has won six of the seven clashes with the Giants, with two of those being by more than 100 points.
4. The Tigers are ranked last for possessions, averaging 349.4 per game, compared to the Giants, who are ranked equal eighth at an average of 388.8. In contested possessions the Giants are third and Tigers fifth.
5. The teams have played three times at Spotless Stadium and Richmond is undefeated, with wins by 12, 121 and 113 points. The Tigers have won four of their last five games in Sydney.
6. Powerful Tiger Dustin Martin (14th) is this game's highest ranked player in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, and could go head to head with GWS co-captain Callan Ward (23rd) in what should be a classic match-up.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR… Alex Rance.
If the Tigers are any chance of causing an upset, the game's best tall defender must do a job on star Giant Jeremy Cameron. Rance likes to be Richmond's extra man in the defensive 50, but for the sake of his team, he has to take responsibility for shutting Cameron down.

The only way we can win is with quick flowing footy up the guts.
They are too tall and Dimma seems to think running the ball up the edges of the ground and kicking to a contest on the side lines is a winning formula.
Well NEWSBREAK it is not.

Tigers not scarred by 88-point loss, says Damien Hardwick
Glenn McFarlane
Herald Sun
19 May 2017
RICHMOND won’t be spooked or scarred by its last meeting with Greater Western Sydney — an 88-point drubbing in Round 19 last year — with coach Damien Hardwick insisting his team had a different mindset and make-up to the one that managed only three goals in Canberra last July.
Hardwick said he was confident his team was ready to match it with the Giants at Spotless Stadium on Saturday, despite three successive losses, one of them a heartbreaking after-the-siren loss to Fremantle last Sunday.
“(Footy) moves on pretty quickly,” Hardwick said.
“I think the back end of last year seems like three years ago, from my point of view. (Both teams) are completely different sides and we will take what is in front of us.
“We are playing a reasonable brand of footy that we think will get better, and they are probably the same.
“We are expecting a tight contest, both contested ball sides, it is going to be built around contest and pressure.
“So whatever side best asserts that will win the game.”

Their 29 absolutely smashes our 38.
9 players not worth a pinch of s h i t
-
Don't agree Dooks. I've heard Stevie J may make it 28. GWS are there for the taking, I'm more bothered by our attitude going into the game. If we have the dare that saw us beat the Dees, Eagles and Collingwood - we win.
If we start to get all conservative and overly analytical about these losses - we lose.
We will have a fair idea in the first q
-
Lobb doubtful.

Of course we can beat them, the effort just has to be there. They're also terribly wounded

Now that everyones exectations are high, the most Richmondy thing to do would be a 1-2 quarter pressure blotz on the opposition followed by a second half collapse and 10 goal loss.

Something like that and a ninthmomd finish on the ladder at the end of the round

LATE CHANGES
Richmond: Josh Caddy (groin soreness) replaced in the selected side by Anthony Miles
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Greater Western Sydney: Matt de Boer, Harry Perryman, Daniel Lloyd, Sam Reid
Richmond: Brandon Ellis, Anthony Miles, Shai Bolton, Ivan Soldo

Saturday night's clash with Richmond should show the Giants where they need to be, given the Tigers lead the AFL in forward 50 tackles with 15.4 a game this season. Cameron's men are ranked 17th with only 9.1 a game, two below the competition average.
In terms of pressure acts inside 50, Richmond's Daniel Rioli (12), Jason Castagna (17), and Jack Riewoldt (48) are all ranked inside the AFL's top 50, but Devon Smith (25) is the only Giant to rate a mention and he won't be on the field on Saturday night thanks to a knee injury.
The Giants fare even worse, according to Champion Data's forward 50 pressure factor. They are last in the league, while Richmond's group are ranked second.

Steve J vs B Ellis. :lol
Ellis needs new undies already.
-
Rance good defensive mark. Ellis' dangerous kick still finds Grigg. To Houli point of the square off to Short who finally goes long. Dusty marks outside 50. Nicely weighted ball finds Cotch on a tight angle. Bends it through :gotigers.

Despite the Giants leading the clearance count 11-8 in this first quarter, the Tigers are capitalising when they do get the ball clear, scoring 4.1 (25) from this source compared to the Giants 1.0 (6).
Alex Rance with a great intercept mark, his second of the game. Rance has won a competition high 46 defensive-50 intercepts this season, 12 more than any other player.

Rance to Grigg who could've taken the shot from 45. Goes to Rioli who misses.

Would be nice to think we could keep this up for another 3 quarters but that wouldn't be Richmondy.
-
Mr. 31% has lifted.
Grigg 9 possessions, 3 effective (33.3%) :clapping
-
If Grigg and Rioli lowered their eyes it would be nearly over....but then again it is the tigers. Btw Prestia's first quarter was first class.
-
Great first quarter response to last week soft 'effort'. Pressure and intensity was top notch.
Now the question is can we keep it up and play more than one quarter like that unlike the past 4 weeks. The Giants will get a spray at 1/4 time so we need to come out of the huddle and again back up this pressure.

Grigg's miss costly. Could have been a steadier to us. Another to them :banghead.

Here comes the great collapse
-
Ttich to Miles to Rioli on the far side. Back to Miles and passes to Lloyd just inside 50. Rioli keeps running and Lloyd passes it him. Misses as well :scream.
Got to take these gettable chances :banghead
41 - 20
-
Good tackle at HB. Ends up with Lloyd and nice pass to Nanks right on the 50. Another miss.
42 - 20
-
Ellis bad turnover ::)
Fortunately, Nank's great chase puts enough pressure to stop the Giants getting an easy possies inside 50.
-
Shaun Grigg is everywhere for the Tigers. Mid-way through the second quarter, he has a team-high 13 possessions (eight contested), two clearances, three inside 50s and has kicked a goal. However, his kicking efficiency is at just 38 percent to this point.

Don't take your chances then you'll pay :banghead.
Another to them.
42 - 27

GWS are getting into the open spaces in this second quarter, recording a plus-11 differential in uncontested possessions to this point. The Tigers have averaged 49 fewer uncontested possessions per game than their opposition this season, ranked 18th.

That would be called deliberate if we had kicked that 40m to the boundary line because no one was forward of the ball.
-
Dusty open goalsquare but also misses. No left foot.
50 - 27
-
Jack Riewoldt hits the post from directly in front and continues the Tigers struggles with set-shots today. To this point in the match, Richmond have kicked 2.6 (18) from set shots. The Tigers are ranked 14th in goal kicking accuracy this season.

Got to love these rainmaker kicks this quarter.

Half-time
Richmond 6.3 7.8-50
GWS 1.2 4.5-29
Goals: Cotchin 2, Castagna 2, Riewoldt, Grigg, Menadue.
-
Geez Jack, you expect your gun forward to bury those chances, missed some very gettable shots which will probably be costly
-
Giants had the better of the general play that quarter but we still could've extended our lead if we could kick bloody straight and not miss all these sitters :banghead.
A 21-point lead to the Tigers at half time, partly thanks to their efficiency inside forward 50. From 29 entries inside 50, Richmond have had 17 shots at goal for 7.8 (50), including two shots not registering score.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/9/gws-v-rich
-
Really disappointing qtr.
Should be 6 goals up.
Really poor misses, hope they don't bite us on the behind
-
If metres gained were calculated on altitude then the Tigers would lead the comp. Geez we make it easy for defenders. We tried so hard that quarter to let the Giants back into the game. We just don't know how to dominate sides for two consecutive quarters. To me it seems the midfielders are going missing and we start losing contested ball. Also feel we get a defensive mindset rather than to keep attacking. Just wish I had a dollar for every time we smash a team in one quarter only for us to take the foot off the gas. Would be listening to the game on the beach on my own island.

Feel something Richmondy is about to happen.

The Tigers get the first goal of the third quarter through Sam Lloyd, and it comes from a stoppage again. Richmond are using the stoppages to great effect, scoring 5.3. (33) from this source today, to the Giants 2.2 (14).

That's about the Giants third coast-to-coast goal after us kicking a point :banghead.
57 - 37
-
I have to say that we must have the least penetrating kicking team in the comp. Fair dinkum I doubt if we have many players who can exceed 35 metres on the run, it really is obvious in comparison to the better sides.

Back to dumb kicks inside F50 :banghead.

That's called deliberate :facepalm
Only we cop them ::)

Titch speckie :thumbsup

In all fairness that was the right call.
Geez we do ok for playing a man down every week. Soldo just isn't anywhere near ready for afl football just yet
-
Astbury has been very good tonight.
Ellis long from 55 and misses everything :P.
-
In all fairness that was the right call.
But the umps had gone soft on the deliberate the past two weeks until just then. They didn't call deliberate a Giants kick earlier in the game that went 40m forward to no one and over the boundary.

Ellis :banghead

They get one back late... grrr!

Constanza is so hit and miss with his kicking
What is going on with dusty kicking at goal, used to rarely miss

I'd love to know our set shot conversion % tonight. Must be about around 30 % with all the sitters we've missed :banghead.
-
Doing our best to draw this out and keep giving gws a sniff, use stuffing bury them!
Macca has been awesome today
-
Here we go:
Two set shots for the Tigers in the opening minutes of the last quarter, and two misses. Richmond has now kicked 4.9 (33) from set shots and six of those misses have come from the centre corridor.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/9/gws-v-rich
And of course they take their only chance after all our misses :banghead

We have refused to attack through the guts for the last 40 mins!!!
-
We are so soft and mentally weak. No killer instinct ::).
Goal to them ..... wait .... it's reviewed and Rance got a finger to it :phew.

Did I say we're playing one down? Make that 2 down

Giants are one down on rotations due to another injury yet they have all the run ::).
-
Miles can't run out a game
-
Big contested grab from Grigg to alleviate some pressure
-
Really need a goal here
-
Dusty to Grigg at HF. Too slow. Lambert to Ellis to the top of the square and GWS clear.
Dusty again and finds Soldo at HF. Off to Houli who goes long to the square. GWS clear.
Edwards deep inside 50. And again GWS clear.
Can we lower the eyes once rather than just bombing.
-
Umps just make this deliberate rule up. Cotch's was more deliberate than the other one.
-
We've had about the last 6 chances going inside 50 and it's been cleared by GWS everytime.
-

The most hopeless Club on Earth!!!

Yep absolutely stiffen pathetic. I've backed the boys up the last few weeks but this is disgraceful. i50 entry is a huge issue. Bombing it long is so easy for the opposition. Words really don't can't describe how pathetic that was.
-
Pub packed with patrons all watching the game and everyone of them laughing at us again.
We are the club that just keeps on giving. :rollin
Still the laughing stock of the league. Never let's us down.
It's bloody Tigeritis and always has been not Richmondy.

The defensive zone was too bloody high...This is coaching. Sack him now.
-
You can just tell at the 3qtr time huddle coaches and players would be up and about saying they can still win, it's richmond. Apply enough pressure and they will buckle.
-
How?
I couldn't name a GWS player that would have been in the top 10 players...
Why does stuff play a soccer style gameplan? 31 in front at quarter time and we relax???
-
The Houdini of losers, we are the most amazing team at grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. It is almost laughable how poor the mental fragility of this team is. We are the boxer with no knockout punch, the opposition know that if they hang in there we will trip over our shoelaces and knock ourselves out.
-
The GWS players are openly laughing at us...
-
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo >:( :-[
-
You'd be a happy camper at GWS atm too.
-
I was done after last week and didn't watch the game. I won't be watching another until Hardwick is sacked.
How about you try and score rather than play this defensive crap every week.
All players need counseling on how to be attacking and to be winners
This mentality has been here since the early 80s.
-
A thrilling come-from-behind victory for the Giants, kicking 5.3 (33) to the Tigers 0.5 (5) in the last quarter. The Giants kicked two of their last quarter goals from kick-ins, including the match winning goal.
The Giants comeback in this last quarter is partly due to their dominance in the stoppages. Shane Mumford has recorded 13 hitouts for the quarter (six to advantage) and as a result, GWS lead the clearances 13-5 and have kicked 2.2 (14) from this source.

To be fair, we were trying to score but the both delivery to the forward line and execution once inside 50 was abysmal. Should've been up by 10 goals.
-
It's an indictment on the Tigers and their history of capitulations that I honestly didn't expect to win this game once we got in excess of 30 pts up. It's like we change the way we play both mentally and physically. They seriously need to get the best shrinks money can buy and totally erase all their memories because quite frankly I think this team will be scarred mentally from this day forward if they weren't already..
-
4 goals in the last 3 quarters, that's a performance that deserves to lose.
-
Shocking set shot kicking costs many a game and this was as bad as it gets!

Nothing to do with the coach it is all down to the players. It looks like we just dont have the required level of mental strength. Missing so many set shots directly in front is not good enough.

Forward 50 entry is the biggest problem

rubbish!!
there is a theme here, it filters down. Once off you blame the coach maybe twice, but this is consistent.
pathetic

It's players and coach. Coach has to pick the right people and get them mentally right. Players are the ones who stuff it up.

Forward 50 entry is the biggest problem
I would agree with this.
In the first 5 games we seemed to structure up better inside 50. When the ball hit the ground we were in the right spots to shut down any run from defenders. Since that time I don't know whether it's us or the opposition are doing things differently but we just don't seem to be nailing those tackles.
Maybe our younger players have tired legs but we are nowhere near as manic with our shutting down of defenders.
The other area we just seem to get wrong is as we did last season we seem focused on kicking to the pockets. Considering we have one of the worst set shot goalkickers in the competition why make it harder for ourselves. Why not kick to the hotspot at the top of the square.
-
Not happy one bit

We are stuffing simple goals, simple as that. If we kicked 11.4 instead of 4.11 everyone would be going gaga - there was nothing wrong with entry, we just missed simple stuffing shots, its not like they were hard shots ::)

Gee I wish Ling would consider coaching. He'd be light years ahead of DH.

Yep. Today we lost due to our pathetic kicking for goal. Game should have been over early last qtr if not by 3/4 time.
Problem is we choke different ways each time. Last week it was 3 qtrs of crap due to poor work at stoppages and In50 retention + 21 secs of centre bounce stupidity at the end. This week, it was pathetic goalkicking and poor defending at their kick-ins. Next time, it'll be some other excuse of amateurish/schoolboy football. Our ability to mentally crack manifests itself in numerous different ways :P.

spot on mt - death by mental disintegration. You can grudgingly accept it if we're missing tough shots from the pockets or under intense pressure, but the fact is we took dbl the marks inside 50 to the giants and missed about 6 or 7 absolute gimmes. We bottled it and we also choked again with our setup from the kick out, everyone knew they were going long and yet we still allowed them to punch it on and didnt have coverage there. Pathetic coaching and leadership

We had them on toast in the third quarter and couldn't put them away .

Richo on 3aw was saying our poor set-up for that kick-in after Bolton's touched point was a result of the review process. Apparently as Bolton's kick was originally called a goal, we had already set-up for the centre bounce to avoid a repeat of the Freo game. When the review came back saying it was touched, they ump threw the ball immediately to the Giants defender and there wasn't enough time to set-up defensively as we would've wanted to for the kick-in. Richo's view was that if the review overturns a decision then extra time should be allowed for everyone to reset before play is restarted.

That's fair enough too...but we should never have been in that position. BTW are we cursed or what!

Why do our players just handball willy nilly or blindly chuck it on the boot when they should just take the tackle or kill the ball?
Hackson started that crap, then Shank followed and now everyone does it.....

While I get Richo's point. Facts are there was delay in the centre while it was being reviewed. Everyone knew it was being reviewed our leaders should have adjusted our that.
Secondly, the centre field umpire (Schmidt) then had to run the ball back to the goal square = further delay. We should have adjusted for that and didn't

Interesting just watching Freo and Carlton
Freo guy goes over mark 5mm
50 metre penalty
Umpiring changes each day of each week

I support what Richo said in this instance. After the review time should be allowed so teams can set up in a normal situation.

1. The Tigers were stiff, but you make your own luck
Yes they were unlucky to lose another heartbreaker, but for the second week running, the Richmond players only have themselves to blame. The visitors dominated every aspect of the match against the Giants, but failed their biggest test when the pressure lifted in the final term. Jason Castagna, from 40m out, then the experienced Dustin Martin, from even closer, missed simple set shots in the first two minutes of the last quarter that would have put the Tigers up by more than five goals. Their structures then failed them again in the dying stages after the Giants had stormed back into the game when, after a Shai Bolton goal was overturned by a score review, Richmond failed to have anyone on the mark for Nathan Wilson's kick in. It allowed the GWS defender – one of the league's best kicks – to play on and launch a 70m bomb to the centre square, where an intelligent punch from Phil Davis saw the footy end up with Jeremy Cameron, who slotted the winner. Heath Shaw then set up the home side perfectly to defend for the remaining 59 seconds – something the Tigers didn't do last week – and the result was another four points gone begging for the yellow and black. - Adam Curley

From Robbo's "likes and dislikes" column today:
----------------------------------------------
There are questions everywhere for Richmond after another close loss and while Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Damien Hardwick have to cop the blame, an umpire on Saturday afternoon should be under just as much heat.
WHAT I DON’T LIKE
1. Bad luck or bad management?
Bad luck dogs Richmond, but this was more than that. The players and the coaches box failed Richmond in the final 90 seconds — again. It continues to seriously harm their season. The Tigers have lost their past three games by five, two and three points. If they had won those games, they would be a game clear on top of the ladder. Coulda, woulda, but didn’t. Agree with coach Damien Hardwick that the Tigers are much improved and challenging the best teams, but the past three weeks tells us the coach and the players fail when the game has to be won.
2. So what went wrong?
Richmond allowed Nathan Wilson to play on and gain metres. They knew Wilson would go long down the middle. They knew someone would try to knock it on. So why weren’t there more Tigers at that contest and behind that contest? Why was there five Giants on two Tigers when Jeremy Cameron kicked the winning goal? Why was there three loose Tigers in their forward 50m when Wilson kicked out? What’s frustrating is the score review gave them time to set up — the Giants used that time wisely — and still there were failings. Coaches and leaders were to blame — yet again.
3. And it wasn’t just at the end
The Tigers kicked five behinds in the final quarter, and three of them were close to gimmes. Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Jason Castagna all missed set shots. They all helped Richmond lose the game. If Dusty wants a million dollars he has to kick those goals. If Riewoldt is the leader we want him to be, he has to kick those goals. If Castagna wants to cement his spot in the team, he kicks those goals.

Mundy's spoil on Riewoldt, chopped his arms, crunched him head high, I kind of missed what happened there, was it called a free kick and play to advantage?
If he had broken Jacks jaw = 4-6 weeks
Also when Mundy practically picked up and threw (was it short) out of the marking contest is that ok?
Plus the blatant push in the back to Rance not paid?
But fact of the matter is we didnt kick goals when we should have.

Doesn't matter, Dimma's proud of the boys. As long as no ones feelings are hurt and we don't suffer from any micro aggressions. That's all that's important at RFC

From Robbo's "likes and dislikes" column today:

Cannot argue with that one
Kick those 2 "gimmes" at the start of the last and the games done :banghead
Totally agree with you WP.

of course you would focus on the set shops missed WP, with good reason, but is there any chance you could focus on the coaching staff as well for once?
should we really be subjected to amateur hour, after this dud has had 8 years to mould this group and install some toughness?
You recruit and then develop these guys so if you cant prepare them after 8 years then what does that tell you?

tells you the message isn't getting through their thick skulls

Yes no issue that we certainly have dumb players that most likely didnt pass year 7, but is he hard enough with them.
e.g at the selection table.
Bellis, Houli fmd all of them should be put on notice. Are they fit enough?

Watch the behind the goal shot when Dylan Shiel waltzed through 5 midfielders to deliver it to the goal square for a mark, then goal. It shows our lack of physical pressure and run and bad positioning. I exploded when I saw it.

Yesssss guys love the positivity :clapping
Saw it coming as soon as the posts before this started :clapping :clapping

The review delaying our set up is a cop out. Surely if we were adequately set up to not allow a repeat of the week before we would have had 10 defenders in GWS F50. How did we end up with only 3-4 behind the contest?
-
The main thing is, Dimmer is proud of his players over the last few weeks.

How an Irishman saw Richmond’s demise when none of its leaders did
Michael Randall,
Herald Sun
May 22, 2017 3:32pm
IRISHMAN Tadhg Kennelly saw it coming, but none of the Richmond leadership did.
Jittery Tiger fans were on the edge of their seats as Greater Western Sydney chased victory.
And if they were listening to the former Sydney premiership defender, the SuperFooty Podcast crew says they would have had a feeling of dread.
“They’ve got to win the game, so you’ve got to put numbers back,” Kennelly said during the SEN call.
“I’m just looking at the space that’s in the defensive 50 right now, it’s just a set up for disaster here for Richmond.”
And, true to form, the Giants won the ball out of the middle and Jeremy Cameron slotted the match winning goal.
“I can’t believe it, 1.20 to go, you’re three points up and there is nobody at the back end of the square for a quick kick in for the opposition.
“I just can’t believe my eyes.
“It’s poor leadership and it’s poor coaching from the Richmond Football Club.”
Mick Warner says “the club has got a disease” late in games and “it’s hard to get over the curse”.
“I don’t think William Shakespeare could have come up with a tragedy like this that Richmond has played out over the last three weeks,” Warner said on the SuperFooty Podcast.
“The fact that he could see it, Tadgh Kennelly ... they had 80 seconds, I think the review went for 80 seconds... and they couldn’t get into position.
“Blind Freddie could have told you they were going to go long, down the middle and we all know what happened.”
Anthony Hudson says the footy Gods are against the Tigers, but Mick says he has the cure:
“The best thing they can do is turn up in front of 90,000 people this Saturday night in Dreamtime (against Essendon) and make sure they’re at least two goals ahead with one minute to go.”
