The Tigers have remained upbeat this week after back-to-back heartbreaking defeats, with Hardwick focusing on the positives on Thursday.

He said the team reviewed the final stages of last Saturday's three-point loss to Greater Western Sydney and identified a number of errors.

"It was just a breakdown. We looked at a couple of things. The manning of the mark wasn't tight enough … (Nathan) Wilson kicked in and got five or six extra metres, which then gets the ball further in the centre," the coach said.

"Unfortunately in these circumstances you can look at one individual, but collectively as a side we shouldn't have been in that position to start with.

"We go through that, the guys are big boys and they understand it.

"We're playing some good footy, we're just not quite getting the result. Unfortunately you don't get rewarded for great effort."

Hardwick said the Tigers would continue to back their style of play, despite four consecutive losses, acknowledging that they would find themselves in more close finishes this season.

He said tight losses against top-eight sides GWS, the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle had reinforced confidence rather than sapped it.

"The way we're playing provides a template to win games. We're never going to win games by 10 goals, but we're going to be competitive in all games we play," Hardwick said.

"That's the template we like, we've spoken about it and our players agree with the way we're going that it's a winning formula.

"We've just got to make sure that we get those wins."

The Tigers will make at least one change for Saturday night's clash, with recruit Josh Caddy set to return after one match on the sidelines with groin soreness.

Small forward Dan Butler will miss one more week with a groin complaint, however, meaning first-year Tiger Shai Bolton will hold his spot after an eventful debut in round nine.

Hardwick 'clouded' on new punch interpretation

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick wants more clarification on the AFL's stance on jumper and gut punches, saying he was still uncertain of the League's direction.

Football operations boss Simon Lethlean this week said players would no longer be given the benefit of the doubt by the Match Review Panel when they intentionally struck an opponent.

The AFL did not implement any new rules or change the MRP system, however, with the Panel told to impose stricter interpretations of impact for intentional jumper and gut punches.

"I'm not comfortable, because I'm not quite sure which way we're going at the moment," Hardwick said on Thursday.

"It's probably still the same as far as I'm concerned. There's nothing that's come out that's said … what's happening.

"We're probably still a little bit clouded at this stage. We probably don't address it, to be honest, until we get some clarification about what's happening."

The AFL said it had contacted all club football departments this week to explain the new stance, which was outlined by Lethlean on Tuesday after Ben Cunnington escaped suspension for an intention punch.

"I do not like the current conduct of so-called gut punches or jumper punches. It is my role to stamp that out," Lethlean told AFL.com.au.

"The MRP has the tools at their disposal to sanction players appropriately. Players and clubs, if they weren't already, are now on notice that we are not going to put up with this sort of conduct."

That is so concerning. Is that proof that they shut down once we get a decent lead

Absolutely. Still bemused at why people get so shocked at what this amateur says

its hilarious Hardwick has a history of backing the things that dont work or in this case have been worked out,
We are the worst structured side in the comp and Hardwick thinks playing a shedload of C grade smalls at best is the way around our problems. It is laughable.

Cats rarely lose the close ones, obviously selwood and danger lift, but you can see the body language and the intensity of every single one of their players lift in the final quarter - polar opposite to how our introverted playing group respond in similar situations

Agree but it was a brilliant setup that forced Dixon to handball wide when play on was called.

Good coaching.

Exectly, you feel if we were in the same position he would have simply run around and slotted the goal from the angle. It's situations like that which shows the difference between the teams who are well drilled and act on instinct and teams like us who wave their arms in the air and look like they don't have a clue (are there any other teams like us).

Richmond on winning track: Hardwick

Melissa Woods

Richmond feel they have the AFL winning formula right, they just need to start winning again.

The Tigers have gone down in thrillers in their last three matches, including last round's three-point heartbreak against Greater Western Sydney.

Desperate to get back on the winners' list this Saturday night against Essendon at the MCG, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said the performance of his players had kept their spirits up despite the run of losses.

"We're disappointed we didn't pick up the four points but for 80 per cent of the game we were pretty happy with the performance," Hardwick said.

"We're playing some good footy, we're just not getting the result and unfortunately you don't get reward for great effort."

The coach said that all the performance indicators pegged them as being on the right track.

"The indicators we look at are high; we have the template to win games ... it's a winning formula and we've just got to make sure we get those wins on the back of that.

"Our boys are confident with the style and brand of footy that they're playing and that we can take it up to any side."

He said the Tigers kicked 61 inside 50s against GWS without posting a winning score so there was plenty of upside.

"We've got a fairly inexperienced forward line most weeks so that will take some time but we're encouraged each week there's more signs of that coming out."
