Good news.

Rioli has been the most disappointing player on our list this year in my opinion when you take into account the potential upside.
He has gotten so far ahead of himself it's comical.
He needs to be taken down a few notches and dumping him to the reserves would do that. Hardwick thinks he is teaching him but all he is doing is teaching him the inexplicable preformances are ok. Menadue was a star last week compared to Rioli but guess who gets dropped.
If he was at the Bulldogs or Hawthorn he would have been banished a month ago.
Add that to the 2 close losses where he made crucial mistakes and his year has been one to forget.
I'm glad he has signed for another 2 years but don't let that cloud the fact he has been putrid this year.

Daniel Rioli re-signs with Richmond until the end of 2019
KATE SALEMME,
Herald Sun
15 July 2017
RICHMOND has locked away exciting small forward Daniel Rioli for a further two years.
The new deal will see the 20-year-old remain at Punt Rd until at least the end of 2019.
Rioli has come on in leaps and bounds this season and has been an integral player in the Richmond resurgence, forming part of a ‘mosquito fleet’ — alongside Dan Butler and Jason Castagna — inside forward 50 that has transformed the team’s form.
“I’m really excited to remain at Richmond for at least another two years,” Rioli said.
“I have loved this football club from day one and it was an easy decision to re-sign.”
Rioli has booted 13 goals so far this season and is averaging 10.1 disposals per game.
In his 33 career games Rioli has shown similar traits to his cousin, Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli, since making his debut in Round 1 last year.
“Daniel is an exciting, young player and he has a very bright future ahead of him,” Richmond talent manager Dan Richardson said.
“Daniel is clearly a talented footballer, but he also brings much more to our football club.
“He is passionate about sharing his culture and educating his teammates, as well as the broader football community.”
By extending his stay at the Tigers the Rioli legacy continues in yellow and black after the forward’s great uncle Maurice Rioli won two best and fairest and a Norm Smith Medal with Richmond in the 1980s.

I don't think this is fair as I don't think it's the case. I think he is dead set trying and knows he's got to perform better but he just isn't able to at the moment which I think is making things worse. He used to not get much of it but when he did good things could happen. Now when he gets the ball I wait for the inevitable stuff up.
Add that to the 2 close losses where he made crucial mistakes and his year has been one to forget.
What mistakes were they? I know he came off the wing against Freo but I'm not sure if he's completely to blame for that. Yes he should have been smarter and positioned himself in a better spot but I wonder who told him to go there or if anyone told him to go otherwise. I imagine he was just a kid following instructions and no one told him otherwise. What was the other though?
Btw I agree with your last point

The other one was when he dropped a simple chest mark that eventually went out of bounce with us going forward with less than a minute to play against GWS I think it was.
Just watching the Melbourne/Adelaide game and they just mentioned Jeff Gartlet has kicked 31 goals for the year. A player they got for pick 60 odd, and most Richmond fans get excited when Rioli just gets a kick. Because his name is Rioli and because he is an early draft pick he keeps getting games when form clearly doesn't warrant it. He didn't have a kick in 3 quarters of footy last week and ended up with 2 for the game. That is just unfathomable imo.
I'm sick of this club having double standards, and we wonder why our culture is the worst in the AFL.

Garlet is in his 9th season.

i personally thought garlett was a steal. It was at a time when we really needed a type like him.
clubs knows best though

Valid points from big tone.Needs to get more involved simple as that.I agree Menadue has been alot better yet he gets dropped same issue been happening with Lloyd finally got dropped if it was Lennon one game and he's gone.'
-
I for one thought he was going to spend more time in the magoos over the first couple of years.
So based on that he's well ahead of where I thought he would be, still he has petered off and some time back in the seconds wouldn't hurt. Besides Bolton is like bashing the door down right now, maybe his turn for a bit!
Starting to get some nice depth and wrapped he has signed gunna be a gun don't worry about that.
-
Don't get me wrong, I like Rioli and think he will be a good player for us. I'm not sold on him being as good as his cousin but happy he has committed to the club.
I hope he comes out today and kicks a bag and then his position wouldn't need to be spoken about.
-
Garlett is almost 28. Rioli is 20. Garlett is a different player. He is a genuine goal sneak. I see Rioli eventually moving into the midfield, something Garlett doesn't offer. We can get at least 12 more years out of Rioli. Yes he was a steal, I agree, but there are 16 other clubs that also missed out on getting him so we are not alone.

Here we go...
Rioli was considered by us the 15 best kid in the country but you want to make excuses for him for his performances this year??
How are they different players? They both are playing the same position??
We will end up with 4 or 5 small forward that combined goal tally will be the same as a pick 60 odd??
He we never be a mid either, so don't kid yourself. He doesn't know how to get enough footy to be a mid. He is a small forward that at the moment that doesn't kick goals but even worse doesn't really even contribute other than tackling.
I compared the two last night because their rolls are the same presently, you can cloud that with whatever you like but the facts are we have a pick 15 that poo.
So I guess the other question is did we give up too much for him with pick 15 just because his name was Rioli?
Ryan Burton would be pretty handy about now.

At the age of 19-20 Garlett averaged 9.4 possessions a game and 1.2 goals. Rioli averages 10.2 disposals and 0.9 goals per game this year....

Careful with quotes like that, reminds me of the time richmond supporters were arguing that tamblings stats in his first 3 seasons were similar to McLeods in his first 3 seasons :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

What does that matter? If Rioli will turn out like Garlett or better we will have a great player in our team. Just because Carlton struck gold (and never realised it) doesn't make any difference to us. Are we going to start talking about Essendon picking up Hird at pick 79, Chris Grant at 105 etc etc while other teams picked up duds at pick 1-10? I think what you are bringing up is irrelevant. The only relevant thing is if they will be good players for the RFC. That is all. If Jack Graham stays fit he might be the best of our 2016 picks but Shai Bolton will be still seen as a steal at pick 29.

Surely when it comes to expectations, a pick 15 has greater expectations that a pick 100??
I noticed you didn't comment on my midfield comment? Do you honestly think he can be a genuine midfielder? Or was that more a wish than anything else?
-
Are opposition teams putting more effort into negating Rioli now? Probably. But he has to learn how to beat his opposite number and most players drop in their 2nd or 3rd year until they are strong enough and experienced enough to win their position. He is the future of the RFC so I'm glad they re signed him. He needs another pre season or two.

My expectations are that he will become a very good player for the RFC, that's all. He is tracking very well for a second year player. Most second year players have a bit of a lull. How about Carlton giving Garlett away for nothing after he had already shown something, which is in my opinion a lot worse than missing out picking up a top player at pick 100? I think he will be a useful midfielder when he gets his body strength up. Hard to get lots of disposals playing forward pocket. Or do you know of other players that get 25 plus disposals playing that role in its entirety?
-

Don't forget Rioli has spent time on a wing and still struggles to find the ball.

Yeah, spends about 2% of the time on the wing.....

Yeah, spends about 2% of the time on the wing.....
Yet still struggles to find the ball which is my point. What signs has he shown that he could push into the midfield? Maybe he will but for me he is too weak (that will improve), can't find the ball (maybe it'll improve) and continually falls over (a disease that a lot of players forever struggle to improve). Needs to do a lot before I'm convinced he'll be able to push into the midfield
Don't get the negative comments on Rioli.
Why not? Did you think his game was perfect?
-
Sometimes you stretch yourself and pick a player because you think he'll be a gun eventually. Rioli was never ranked at 15 in the draft but he may turn out to be in the top 10 players in the draft by the time he is 25. He was a late developer and came from nowhere to get picked at 15. If we didn't pick him, Hawthorn were ready to pounce at 18 from what I've been told. Hardwick himself said he wasn't ready to play footy last year but they were crying out for a tackling machine in the forward line as we ranked last for forward pressure the previous year, so he played him. I think he is tracking beautifully for someone his age. He is part of a formula that has us at 5th position on the ladder currently. He is doing the job asked of him by the coach. That's all you can ask for.

Did i think his game was perfect? Ummmmm no but not a bad game by a second year player. Again not sure why some are so negative towards him. Uncouth :whistle

Come on Doc, saying he is "tracking beautifully" is a massive stretch. Anyone who knows anything about this game knows he should have been drop 5,6,7 weeks ago.
Old Dermie was pretty critical of him today without actually saying what we all know he meant.
He kicked a decent goal late in the game against the bottom side playing on a kid with less experience than himself. The rest of his game was putrid.
I'd rather the club "manage" him if they are to gutless to say his is omitted but the kid needs some time in the twos. Especially when we have Bolton and Stengle ready and in form to replace him. Even Menadue has more claim on a spot in our side infront of him.

Hardwick told us that he would be rested a few weeks ago but has yet to get a rest. When I said tracking beautifully I was talking about his general progress. He uses up a lot of energy with all his chasing, harassing and tackling. At the game it is more obvious than on TV. His class is obvious. Even games like today, he was involved with three goals, had 13 disposals and 6 marks and yet people are still bagging him. Do I think he's made it as a great player? No. Do I think he will become a very good player? Yes. And I am happy to keep playing him to fast track his development even though I think he needs a week off soon.

You keep quoting stats but all that shows me is you are grasping at straws. But if you decide to use stats to strengthen your argument, at least be accurate. He was crap today like most of the last 9 weeks and if you heard the commentary they tended to agree.
Let keep gifting games to players that don't deserve it over other kids that do, because that creates great culture in a footy club.

Did i think his game was perfect? Ummmmm no but not a bad game by a second year player.
Think that explains it then. He had some negatives to his game therefore he is open to some negative comments.
FWIW I think there a few who deserve to be dropped before Rioli BUT I just don't think keeping him in the team for who knows what reason is the way to go. Why not rest him a week and/or let him play with the plebs in the VFL and hopefully gain some confidence.

What a lot of poo. We are doing what many of us cry out for - play the kids. Yet people bag the club no matter what we do. Do you know the instructions Hardwick gives Rioli and if he does what he is instructed to do? No. Maybe he gets games because he carries out his orders perfectly. Hardwick said as much at the midseason review. I for one love the fact we gift games to Rioli and players of his ilk. It is for fast tracking their development. I don't like it when senior players with no upside are gifted games though. Edwards, Grigg and previously Vickery could stink it up and never get dropped. Yet guys like Lennon play one poor game and would be out the door.

Personally I think Caddy is one, I think he's been very disappointing. Add to that Edwards and Grigg. Yes they may offer more ATM but Edwards and Grigg in particular aren't the way forward

Rioli is stuffing awesome despite obviously being a bit proppy, he still does some special things and will get through whatever is crueling his mellow.
