Damien Hardwick happy with win over Brisbane looking forward to GWS Giants test

Rebecca Williams,
Herald Sun
16 July 2017

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick declared the Tigers “owe” Greater Western Sydney ahead of Sunday’s big clash against the Giants as his team hit back against Brisbane after last week’s horror show.

The Tigers responded to last round’s capitulation to St Kilda with a 31-point victory against the Lions at Etihad Stadium to move into fifth place on the AFL ladder and stay in touch with the top four.

It sets up a critical clash on Sunday at the MCG with the third-placed Giants, who scored a three-point win over the Tigers when they last met in Sydney in Round 9.

“(It’s a) big game, GWS. They would be disappointed with their loss, probably just couldn’t capitalise on their chances they had and we probably owe them one as well,’’ Hardwick said.

“It’s going to be a huge contest, I just hope the fans come out and see a cracking game. It’s a really important game for both footy clubs.’’

While Hardwick remained frustrated by his team’s errors across half-forward and connections inside 50m against the Lions, he was happier with what his team delivered around the contest after being hammered in contested play against the Saints.

They won the contested possession count by 30 and the clearance tally 41-26.

“We had better balance in and around the contest and I thought that our guys hunted the contest a lot more,’’ Hardwick said.

“I think the only quarter we were a little bit down in that was the second quarter, but Brisbane upped their workrate and started to get some scoreboard ascendancy from that period, but I thought after that we were pretty strong in that facet of the game, which is good, we’ve just got to make sure we consistently take that forward.’’

Hardwick lauded the performance of midfield star Dustin Martin for his 40-possession and two-goal show, while also singling out captain Trent Cotchin (28 possessions and one goal) and Dion Prestia’s run-with role on Dayne Zorko, who was held to just 11 touches for the game.

“He (Martin) was really solid around the ball, he probably got to work I think the second half, a little better than the first, it was OK, but I thought he certainly for the contested ball that we were craving up and going a little more in the second half, third quarter, in particular,’’ Hardwick said.

“I thought Trent was outstanding, a bit more explosive in and around the middle a lot of the time. It was a good contest.

“I was really pleased with Dion’s game, for him to tag Zorko and keep him to 11 touches, I thought it was the best game that he has played for our footy club and I’m really happy that he got the performance that we were hoping he would bring.’’

Hardwick was also pleased with what Anthony Miles (24 possessions) delivered after his recall to the team.

“He was pretty solid, one thing ‘Milesy’ does very well is hunt the ball in and around the contest,’’ Hardwick said.

“He has been working really hard at VFL level at his spread away from the contest and I think that was evident today. So I was really pleased for him.’’

Dusty needs protection, says frustrated Dimma

afl.com.au
16 July 2017

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has vented his frustration at the on-field treatment of superstar midfielder Dustin Martin after the leading Brownlow Medal contender was baited into striking his opponent on Sunday.

Martin, who is the second favourite for this year's Brownlow Medal, landed what looked to be a light but closed-fisted strike around the neck of opponent Nick Robertson in the Tigers' 31-point win at Etihad Stadium.

The dynamic midfielder was lashing out after Robertson deliberately kneed him in the leg, but the incident is sure to attract the attention of the Match Review Panel on Monday.

"When you probably get belted in the back 35 times for the game, I reckon it would be fair enough," Hardwick said on Sunday when asked about the Martin incident.

"We got a memo from the AFL saying if you consistently hit someone in the back it's going to be a free kick.

"So that's up to the umpires to adjudicate."

Martin was exceptional in the Tigers' win, finishing the match with 40 possessions, 14 clearances, two goals and a career-best 12 inside 50s to spearhead his otherwise wayward team.

Hardwick praised the superstar for his second-half lift, with Martin's third quarter alone netting 15 possessions and five clearances.

The coach was also pleased with midfielder Dion Prestia, who was sent to Lions' gun Dayne Zorko and restricted him to 11 possessions, while winning 19 of his own and kicking a goal.

"I was really pleased with Dion's game … I thought it was the best game he's played for our footy club and I'm really happy he got the performance we were hoping he'd bring," Hardwick said.

"We've had Kane (Lambert) do that (run-with role) at various stages and Dion has done a couple of jobs like that before.

"He tends to feel he plays his best when he does have a starting point off an opposition.

"We thought that worked really well for us today and we quelled a good player out of the game in Zorko. It was a good result for us."

Hardwick was frustrated with the Tigers' overall performance, with a lack of efficiency going inside the 50-metre arc preventing them from taking full toll of a massive inside 50 advantage (67-39).

The team's contested play at stoppages had improved, however, winning the clearances 41-26 and the centre clearances 20-4.

"We had better balance in and around the contest and I thought our guys hunted the contest a lot more," Hardwick said.

"I think the only quarter we were a little bit down in that was the second quarter … I thought after that we were pretty strong in that facet of the game."

No need to get personal. I would have loved to smash them. However, considering our record at Etihad and them winning there against Essendon in their last visit to the venue, anyone would have been relieved we walked away with the 4 points. Not happy, just relieved. There is a difference you know....

With you 100% YBB, never thought we'd "smash 'em" just wanted the 4 points

At the moment that's all that matters banking the wins to get to the magic number 13

Still not convinced we'll get them but we are just 3 away, which I'll take at this point

Two scenarios - we either just miss the 8 or another Elim finals obliteration.

Only just saw this, not sure how saying i didn't think we'd "smash" the opposition is accepting mediocrity. Just stating where we are as a team right now

Did i say i was happy with the final margin? Nope

Facts are right now we are playing crap footy so based on that I simply dont see us smashing anyone any time soon.

So banking wins is what we need to do to make finals,  that's what I expect to see FINALS

I expect us to make finals and I expect us to win at least one...dont do that then they have failed miserably, no ifs buts or maybes

Clear enough

Stop assuming you know what I am thinking. You could not be further from the truth. These sort of comments are the types that infuriate posters on this site. Stick to your own opinions on football and not the opinions you have about other posters, which are so wrong, that it makes you look like an idiot.

My point is, we are performing better than most people expected at the start of year, me included.

I guess it's about as relevant as someone's attendance at a Club 80 function.

Onya champ...though perhaps overlooking the important difference that it was a throw away line & a gag, not the basis of an argument...regardless of how butt hurt some other moron was from it....

...but I digress - not sure even at the start of the year people would've been happy with a scrappy five goal win at home over an interstate side that were the equal favourites for the wooden spoon....unless people thought we were going to be bottom four and as far as I can recall, only claw thought that....

Port beat Brisbane a couple of weeks ago at Adelaide oval by 40 pts (31 scoring points to 20)
We beat Brisbane at Edihad ( where the Lions probably play more ) by 31 pts ( 32 scoring shots to 20 )

Lack of polish aside , take the win and move on .

True but lets face it, even quality teams have an ugly win from time to time against ordinary opposition. In fact, top teams have lost to ordinary teams this year. It happens and more so this year than others it seems.

Oh, and i reckon more people than claw thought we would finish bottom four, they just haven't have the nuts to post about it.

Nowhere did I say people were expecting much at the start of the year,...most IIRC were predicting a midtable finish, maybe a small minority thought bottom four....and I'm pretty sure most were banking at least 8 points from the two Brisbane matches.....the whole point is what we would be expecting now in round 16 and more importantly whether the coach should be "happy" with that performance...

Fair points and probably true....I'd say like most I was relieved with the win but definitely not happy with the effort and the lost opportunity for a much a needed precentage boost.....and regardless of how unusual  unpredictable the results have been acroos the board this year, scrappy wins over lesser teams that we should be putting to the sword and are often in a position to, seems to be a continuing theme under Halfstep over many years ......but then again apparently we're not a side that wins by ten goals....and he seems quite conent with that...

I hated watching the footy we played on Sunday because I know it's not going to get us anywhere.  And to be totally honest I wasn't relieved we won.
If it was a one off effort, you would put it down as a bad game, be relieved to get the 4 points and move on. But let's be honest, its not.
The club has played some decent footy this year but other than maybe one or two games since our first five wins, the rest have been pretty average. Not even close to being top 4 standard and not even top 8 standard imo.
It's the type of football you play that is important, not really the wins and loses. Because sure enough when the real stuff starts in September there is no more hiding behind a poo style of footy against the good sides.

What is amazing is the talk of Prestia having a good game. Ive watched it twice and if his game is the standard then we are doomed to mediocrity for ever.
Go look where Miles got his possesions go look at his use under pressure,  then go look at preastia  the bloke just wastes it nearly every time. What happens at games end?  well they are so desperate and this goes for supporters as well they talk up prestias game which was nothing more than average and poor old milesy is for the chop. Exactly. And to state one is happy with the win imples something totally different within (and either completely ignores or doesnt understand) the context of our season, list, games we have choked on, form etc.

Honestly lads people have to be responsible for what they say.

The whole premise of being happy with the win is beneath us.

Let them be happy. Let them even be extatic.
