Don't know where they get their weather details from
I can see 16 and possible showers for next Sunday.
But that is a week away ;D
Etihad was Freezing yesterday I must add
-
Sounds like GWS are getting desperate if they are willing to rush back players underdone.
GWS will consider hatching a bold plan to rush midfield gamebreaker Stephen Coniglio straight back into its side to face Richmond, despite him playing only three hours of football in the past 17 weeks.
The Giants are set to give star forward Jeremy Cameron until the 11th hour to prove his fitness after he missed the Swans encounter with a hamstring injury.

The GWS game is exactly the type of game we would win. Im backing them in. Get around em lads and lasses :clapping :gotigers

Sounds about right.
After that pisspoor effort against the saints our % is shot, so 13 games is needed for finals. This means 3 more wins from GWS, GC, Geel, Haw, Freo away and the Saints.
Honestly, we'll be pinching wins to make the finals IMO.

The Richmond way would be to start the season with 5 straight victories and end the season with 5 consecutive defeats.

I hope we haven't reverted back to that crappy game plan of last year over position short kicks etc and not the run and carry of this season and tackling.Would be a huge mistake that's our best footy and the way to win against gws.Seen signs of that crap in 2016 last few games.

Yes me too.
How hard is it to continue to play a game style that won us games?? Are they stupid??
Just run, work hard, take the game on and tackle and you will win games. Pretty simple really.
-
It's the culture at the club of going defensive as the finish line approaches that has caused us most problems winning close games, I hope it doesn't apply to the whole season, 5 straight wins is like being up by 6 goals at half time and still losing which we all know we are so good at.

Match preview: Richmond v Greater Western Sydney
afl.com.au
19 July 2017
SUMMARY
There wasn't much convincing about Richmond's 31-point win over the Brisbane Lions and a significant lift will be required to get past Greater Western Sydney in a crunch game for both clubs. It hasn't been a good fortnight for the Tigers, who are struggling to turn their inside 50s into quality scoring opportunities and putting their top-four ambitions at risk. Another brilliant performance from a rampaging Dustin Martin made sure the Lions never seriously challenged, but there are cracks the Tigers need to address. A win against the Giants would get their season back on track in a big way, while putting the Giants' top-four prospects on shaky ground. GWS has not won a game for three weeks, drawing with Geelong and Hawthorn before a 13-point loss to Sydney. The Giants need a confidence-boosting win as much as the Tigers, which should make for an absorbing, high-stakes clash at the MCG. The winner will emerge buoyed going into the final five rounds.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, July 23, 1.10pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R9, 2017, GWS 11.12 (78) d Richmond 10.15 (75) at Spotless Stadium
R19, 2016, GWS 17.9 (111) d Richmond 3.5 (23) at Manuka Oval
R14, 2015, Richmond 10.18 (78) d GWS 10.9 (69) at the MCG
R19, 2014, Richmond 13.11 (89) d GWS 8.14 (62) at the MCG
R10, 2014, Richmond 24.10 (154) d GWS 5.11 (41) at Spotless Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. Jeremy Cameron kicked the match-winning goal for the Giants when these sides last met in round nine with less than a minute left. Richmond led by 21 points at half-time and 25 at three-quarter time before the Giants kicked five unanswered goals in the final quarter.
2. The Giants' form has dropped away in recent weeks and since round 12 they have registered one win, two losses and two draws with an average score of 92 points. In rounds 1-11 they averaged 102 points.
3. The Tigers remain one of the best defensive teams this season, ranking No.4 for points conceded. They have conceded 100 points in a game only twice.
4. The Giants last played at the MCG in round one, 2016, losing to Melbourne. They’ve played 10 games at the venue for just one win, beating Melbourne in round 21, 2014.
5. Richmond is one of the lowest disposal teams in 2017, ranked No.16 with an average of 364.9 a game. Dustin Martin is the team's leading disposal-winner, ranking No.9 in the AFL for total disposals this season (477).
6. Dustin Martin has climbed every week in the Schick AFL Player Ratings since round three, moving from No.21 overall to No.4. Only Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong), Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood) and Josh Kennedy (Sydney) are ahead of him.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Toby Nankervis
The ruckman will be coming up against Shane Mumford in a battle of two big men who thrive on the contest. Mumford has had fewer than 30 hit-outs only once this season and averages 5.2 tackles (No.2 among ruckmen). Nankervis has been a quality recruit for the Tigers, often rucking solo and averaging 24.5 hit-outs. He had support from Ivan Soldo in round 17 and it will be interesting to see if the Tigers might decide a two-man approach is needed against the Giants or if a small forward line takes priority.
PREDICTION: GWS by six points

This is a massive game in the context of our season . Win and the prospect of finals is agonising close .
This is high stakes . GWS are treading water . They haven't played at the MCG for 18 months . They are banged up .
Richmond should embrace being the "hunters" this week .
Looking forward to Sunday already :gotigers
-
If we play like a team and they keep playing like a group of individuals we're a chance...the worry is last fortnight we've also played like a group of individuals, so with that in mind, I know which group of individuals I'd be backing.....
-
We'll win. Then lose the majority of the rest of the games. Its the Richmond way.
There might even be injuries which provide excuses for the capitulation.
-
Cameron has been ruled out for this weeks game

Hope he does, might play well for a half but will soon blow up.

THE SPOTLIGHT
ALL eyes will be on Richmond this weekend.
While we don’t want to dredge up bad memories for the Tiger faithful, the club will certainly be out to exact some revenge over GWS, after capitulating at Spotless Stadium in Round 9.
Richmond blew a 25-point lead at three-quarter time, as Jeremy Cameron iced the match with seconds to go in the final term.
Heartbreakingly, debutant Shai Bolton’s goal was overturned when replays showed Giant debutant Harry Perryman had touched the ball.
The loss was Richmond’s fourth in a row, and the third nail biter. Indeed, the week prior Fremantle defeated the Tigers after the siren at the MCG.
While the Giants have had some key inclusions in the past fortnight, they’re still not at full strength.
There’s no reason Richmond can’t beat Leon Cameron’s side, particularly given it’s on the Tiger’s home turf.

We'll win this, Im more concerned about the GC game tbh
-
We'll win this, Im more concerned about the GC game tbh
Exactly.
-
Whether it helps us is another question, but GWS has only won once at the 'G from 10 attempts and our game is the first time they've played at the 'G this year.

-
Our form isn't great over the last 10 odd weeks, who would really know??
I'd rather loose playing a decent type of footy than win like last week. It means nothing in the scheme of things.
-
Clubs looseing above us give us a chsnce to make ground, now up to us to take it and switch on and not play dumb football and not go mentally weake.
-
NO LATE CHANGES
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Richmond: Shaun Edwards, Daniel Rioli, Corey Ellis, Nathan Broad

No finals.
9th
-
We've finally scored. It doesn't help when we just bomb it high in to a forward line with one tall and the rest smalls ::).
2 - 15
-
Onya Rance. The ump caused that not paying the free.
-
No finals.
9th
or play finals lose to 9th.
the hardwick way
-
We are getting smashed in the middle :scream. Down 11 in contested footy and haven't won a clearance yet :help. A repeat of the Saints game where the opposition has come to play and we haven't :banghead. Not replacing Miles with another inside mid is hurting us big time.
2 - 21
-
The Giants in full control in the early stage of this match leading the disposal count 77-52, contested possessions 28-18, marks 23-20, and inside 50s 12-7. Already 19 free kicks given away in the first 20 minutes of the match, the Giants with 11.

Quarter time
Richmond 0.2-2
GWS 3.4-22
Well that was pathetic! :banghead Wake up and start again, Tiges.
-
Just so many school boy errors. I get the whole dusty at ff thing but when we are getting smashed in the clearances just stick him in the guts.
We have no consistency, never know which side will show up.
-
After 25 minutes the Tigers have only had 1 disposal inside their forward 50, and an ineffective one at that. All three goals for the Giants have originated from Tigers' turnovers.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/18/rich-v-gws
Says it all :scream.
-
We just look crap today.
The plus side its great to have time to have come but im not expecting much from what ive seen so far
-
Midfield:
Dusty 4 touches
Caddy 3
Cotch 3
Prestia 3
Phil Davis has had 12 himself in our F50 (Jack 0).
-
At the game. Shades of tbe St.kilda loss coming up.
Bloody terrible. Umpiring shocking.
Oh and Greene is a dog
-
GWS with all the ball yet they've had more tackles. Just 10 tackles to us that qtr despite chasing tail. We are just switched off like the Saints game.
-
Dusty misses.
3 - 22
-
Edwards pulls the kick smartly to Rioli. Point blank range. Goal :gotigers
FINALLY!
Rich 1.3-9
GWS 3.4-22
Dusty 3 touches in the first minute.
-
Floss hands to Astbury finds Grigg on the wing. To Titch who bounces. Could have had another but misses from 45.
10 - 22
-
That sums us up the pats few weeks. 6 possies going nowhere in the middle and then a long bomb which is cleared by the Giants :banghead.
-
C'mon Jack. You need to lift. Davis is having a field day.
-
Floss on D50 over to Cotch. Hands to Broad who misses the pass to Nank and the turnover gifts the Giants a set shot. Lucky they missed.
10 - 23
-
Can we actually hit a target today and move the ball with some purpose?
-
Caddy pinches the tap from Mummy. Grigg hits up Dusty who goals :gotigers.
Rich 2.4-16
GWS 3.5-23
-
Clearances: 6-4 this qtr.
Cont. poss: 16-13 this qtr.
-
That's crap umpire. Paying a push for clear HTB :banghead
Rance good intercept mark. Dusty long. Jack flies; Rioli's there and Lambert goals :gotigers
Rich 3.4-22
GWS 3.5-23
-
C'mon umpires :banghead.
-
We get it back anyway and Jack marks in the goalsquare. Goal :gotigers
We're in front! :gobdrop
Rich 4.4-28
GWS 3.5-23
-
Martin having a huge impact this quarter, now with the Lambert goal being involved in four of the Tigers' five scores this quarter.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/18/rich-v-gws
-
Not deliberate?
Davis kicked backwards and it's a point for us.
29 - 23
-
Caddy taken high and now free ::).
Come off it umpires. There's two teams out there.
-
Another Giant kicks it backwards and turns it over. Rioli to Caddy 52m out. Launches but it's marked by Lobbe :scream. Got to make it a contest.
Dusty with the mark. Goes long. And the ump pays Titch a mark 30m out. He played on to Cotch but the ump allows Titch to take his kick. Misses :banghead.
Bloody set shot goalkicking :banghead.
30 - 23
-
That's half-time
Richmond 0.2 4.6-30
GWS 3.4 3.5-23
Goals: Riewoldt, Martin, Rioli, Lambert.
A reversal of fortunes from the first quarter with the Tigers dominant in all facets of the match, not least of all in inside 50s where they lead 12-5. The Tigers have also reversed the Giants' clearance domination, leading the count this quarter 9-7.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/18/rich-v-gws
-
Great stuff. Now just gotta keep it up
-
Cotch and Dusty lifted big time that qtr. People bag Cotch but you could see early in that second qtr that he said enough is enough and won a few key contests that turned the tide.
Lambert and Titch (aside from that missed goal) were good too.
-
The Tigers' turn to hold their opposition goalless and the Giants were only able to register one behind that quarter to the Tigers' 4.4 (28). Martin unstoppable that quarter with eleven disposals, including five clearances and five score involvements.
Dusty 15
B.Ellis 15
Cotch 14
Floss 10
Grigg 9
Rance 9
Caddy 8
Prestia 7
Lambert 7
Castagna 7
Rioli 7
Astbury 7
Grimes 6
Edwards 6
Short 5
Macca 5
Jack 4
Butler 3

Nank 0
Total disp: 150 - 192 ...... our kick to handball ratio is a much better 2:1 (100k, 50h)
Cont. poss: 58 - 68
Clearances 12 - 16 (centre: 2 - 7)
Stoppages: 10 - 9
Inside 50s: 25 - 25
Marks In50: 5 - 6
Tackles: 33 - 21
Hitouts: 15 - 18
Frees: 14 - 18 ..... it's the one they've missed that's been shocking ::).
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/18/rich-v-gws
-
Nankervis and Soldo aren't doing much both need to lift.
Cotch lifted big time but id still like him to get more clearances now that we don't have Miles in the team.
Grigg is playing crap as usual.
Prestia has had only 2 effective disposals in the first half and that's unacceptable
-
Confirmed: Greene reported for punching Rance.
-
Mummy bad turnover. Dusty over to Jack and goals :gotigers.
Rich 5.6-36
GWS 3.5-23
-
Broad does well to Macca to Edwards. On the boundary set shot. Misses.
37 - 23
-
Edwards to Butler streaming through the centre. But the ump pulls a free off the ball against Jack in the square and GWS gets the free in the middle :banghead.
-
C'mon Tiges. Don't allow these repeat entries with quick blind kicks out of defence.
Cotch through the middle to Jack. Sits for macca. Runs to 40 and shanks it :facepalm. Had Butler in the goalsquare too :P.
-
Good forward pressure by the Tiges but Grigg snaps and misses everything :banghead.
-
The rain has reduced GWS skill level whereas we just play the same :snidegrin
-
Macca has it and it's 50. Same distance as the one he shanked before. Goalllllllllllllllllll :gotigers
Rich 6.7-43
GWS 3.5-23
-
The rain has reduced GWS skill level whereas we just play the same :snidegrin
We're very consistent ;D.
-
Deliberate against GWS for the wide kick out of defence.. Dusty long and it's a throw-in 15m out. Free to Giants against Soldo when Cotch was being held ::).
-
Goal to them :banghead.
43 - 29
-
The rain has reduced GWS skill level whereas we just play the same :snidegrin
A credit to us? Went in with the right gameplan and able to maintain our "skills" despite the rain
-
Prestia out of the centre to HF. Free to us for deliberate. Rioli long and it's a throw-in 25m out. Dusty pinged for HTB.
Caddy tackle and Lambert goes to the goalquare but no one is there and it rolls over for a throw-in. Another free to them ::)
I'd love to know the free kick count in our F50? ::).
-
Bucketing down now.
-
K.I.S.S. in the wet, Tiges.
We get the turnover at HF. Jack clever to Grigg to Dusty to Caddy = Goal :gotigers
Rich 7.7-49
GWS 4.5-29
-
Grigg to Macca who snaps. Dusty can't get it. And the Giants clear. Missed chance there.
-
Nank charges through and quickly on the boot and Dusty shepherds it through :gotigers
Rich 8.7-55
GWS 4.5-29
-
Rance to Floss hands to Astbury to Prestia ends up with Cotch who finds Jack on the lead. Goes over the top and it's a race on and the Giants' defender allows it to go over for a throw-in. Cotch gathers but his snap misses.
56 - 29
-
Prestia to Georgie but his shot goes across the face. Throw-in. Giants clear to the middle to no one. Floss sends it forward. Loose ball. Throw-in 35m out. Georgie free. Bombs and Jack jumps high but the ump pays a free for hands in the back ::).
-
Cotch to HF. Gerogie taps to C.Ellis. To Nank inside 50. Caddy can't mark. Good forward pressure. Jack quick snap but it's OOTF.
one minute to go.
-
Butler to the top of the goalsqaure. Loose ball. Giants clearing kick. Astbury to Broad who finds Lambert outside 50. Goes long. Siren!
3/4 time
Richmond 0.2 4.6 8.8-56
GWS 3.4 3.5 4.5-29
Goals: Riewoldt 2, Martin, Rioli, Lambert, McIntosh, Caddy, Nankervis.
-
Polar opposites to what i saw in 1st quarter. Just hope we can keep pressure on them and walk away with the win
-
So many missed opportunities. If we kick straight we can win by 10+
-
So many missed opportunities. If we kick straight we can win by 10+
:banghead :banghead Do you even barrack for us?! Do you even listen to what the coach says?! We don't win by 10 goals, FACT!

Finish them off, Tiges! Go out and win it!
-
Get lost, ump. Geez, all these free kicks are keeping them it :banghead.
Point to them.
56 - 30
-
C'mon Tiges. Don't let them control the game :banghead.
56 - 36
-
Lambert soccers it forward and Jack marks 40m out. Not a great strike. Review. Checking if it hit the post.
Called a Point :banghead.
57 - 36
-
We get it back and it's a throw-in in the forward pocket. Geez, we've sucked at these F50 throw-in stoppages today. Either a free to them or they clear.
-
They shouldn't have got that transition with those high balls :banghead.
Rushed point to them.
57 - 37
-
You've got to score and win it, Tiges. Trying to "save it" doesn;t work.
-
LOL. Nah no free to us (Rance tackle on Stevie J) ::).
-
11 1/2 mins to go.
We need a goal though. GWS winning these 50/50s.
-
Nank grubbers it in F50. GWS clearing kick. Corey Ellis keeps his feet and does well to Lambert on 50. Falls short and GWS clear :banghead.
We get it back. Floss to Cotch to Butler. Goes short to C.Ellis. Bombs to top of square. Throw-in. Giants clear again. Grrr! :banghead.
-
Only good thing about this is it's eating up time. 10 mins without a score to anyone.
7:30 mins to go.
-
That's crap Ump :banghead.
-
:banghead
57 - 43

The interest In this thread speaks volumes.

Broad on the wing. Titch gather off the contest goes towards Nank but it's a throw-in. Nank toe poke and it's a rushed by Shaw.

64 - 45
-
Literally soaking up time now.
SIREN! :gotigers
-
A stirring 19 point win by the Tigers who looked all at sea after the first quarter. Martin doing his Brownlow chances no harm with a team high 31 disposals, including 10 inside 50s, and 11 clearances.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2017/18/rich-v-gws

The very best and worst of ourselves in the one game :yep. It's never a dull minute watching Richmond ;D.
First quarter was woeful. Didn't turn up and it looked like it would be a repeat of the Saints debacle. Lucky to be only 20 pts down.
Second and third quarter were the complete opposite to the first. Intensity and pressure was as good as it's been all year. Back to what we've been calling for pre-game. We just suffocated the Giants and kicked 8.6 to 1.1 across two quarters. Obviously, that's where the game was won.
Last quarter, we just did enough. Still went in "save mode" at times which allowed the Giants to win the In50 count in the last and we couldn't score from all those F50 stoppages we had to finish off the game when we had them locked in. Georgie's goal was the pressure release to seal the win.
So two excellent quarters, one so-so and one very poor.
In the end, it's an important win. An opportunity to jump back into the top 4 and we did it.
-
What did we think of c Ellis and broad ? Both looked okay to me. Would give them
Another game.
-
Good win.
It was an Andy. A Simon even.
A Good-win.
We played a great brand of footy when it rained.
Loved Vlas, is a back flanker every day of the week.
Dusty, Cotch and Rance back to grade A efforts.
After a poor first qtr, we showed great poise and intensity to roar back into the contest in the 2nd q.
Wouldn't expect to hear from chicken littles tonight, and they'll rest up p for our next insipid loss which will somehow be linked to homosexuality ;D
-
Hey I am showing a friend around town and didn't have a chance to go to the game. Can some of the esteemed members of this board tell me who starred and who plodded and also how Corey Ellis and Broad went? Also do people thing Miles would have allowed us to dominate more?
Thanks in advance

After a poor first qtr, we showed great poise and intensity to roar back into the contest in the 2nd q.
Wouldn't expect to hear from chicken littles tonight, and they'll rest up p for our next insipid loss which will somehow be linked to homosexuality ;D

Looked like we just didn't turn up in the first but amazingly turned things around. Their desire cannot be questioned.

Even though we started slowly you could feel that we weren't going to roll over today. The umps killed us in the first quarter too. I reckon GWS just didn't adjust to the wet and still tried to play Rolls Royce footy. I reckon our intensity showed them up too. Great win, Tigers.

Top-four Tigers spread the load
Richmond has been looking for tall support for Jack Riewoldt all season with Ben Griffiths sidelined and the search will continue after Griffiths suffered a shoulder injury in the VFL on Sunday. The solution so far has been a small forward line and another 40-goal plus season so far from Riewoldt. But with their spearhead beaten by Phil Davis on Sunday and restricted to two goals, a spread of goalkickers was needed. It was a sign of the Tigers' growing depth and blue-collar characteristics that they were able to manufacture goals when needed against the Giants. They had eight goalkickers, with the rain appearing to suit the hard-working team. As a serious top-four contender, those workmanlike characteristics will be needed even more going into the finals without a quality sidekick for Riewoldt. Whether it is enough to be competitive in September is yet to be seen, but Sunday's performance showed it can be done.
---------------
After a strong start, the visitors were beaten in inside 50s 61-51, with Richmond playing smarter and more committed football. Of course, the Tigers' win was not all down to system, with flashes of talent critical from midfielders Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin, who combined for 22 possessions in the second quarter turnaround.

Hey I am showing a friend around town and didn't have a chance to go to the game. Can some of the esteemed members of this board tell me who starred and who plodded and also how Corey Ellis and Broad went? Also do people thing Miles would have allowed us to dominate more?
Thanks in advance
I was at the game so haven't seen stats or replay, this is based purely on how I saw it firsthand.
Broad was solid defensively BUT turned it over by foot 3 or 4 times early in dangerous positions. I think he'll make way for Bachar next week. I like Broad and like the flexibility he offers, need to get more games into him to see if we persevere.
Ellis didn't get a lot of it, think he had 1 touch halfway through the second qtr. I'm not a fan but he did show a couple of classy flashes, however I'd drop him next week.
Soldo competes well in the ruck but is a potato around the ground, absolutely nowhere near ready yet.
First qtr giants structure was much better than ours, they played 2 spare me behind the ball and spread harder so seemed to be outnumbering us everywhere, I actually counted all their players bc i was sure they had more than 18 men.. Once we switched to man on man in the second qtr, the game changed. We looked quicker, harder and hungrier.
Best players for us were:
Martin
Rance
Cotch
Floss(especially early, was one of our few winners in the first qtr)
Astbury
Grimes

Robbo's WHAT I LIKE
1 RICHMOND
HIGH-stakes game and the Tigers bring heart and the Giants bring hope. Always, heart wins out. We’ll find out if the small forwards can take this team deep into September, but late July has delivered them a top-four placing. Had more substance on Sunday and Dusty Martin probably accrued another three votes. Nick Vlastuin played his best game in his shortened season and adds substance to the defence. This was a huge win.

As an esteemed site member I was at the game so heres my take.
Gutsy effort but the rain bought GWS skills back to the pack and they didnt adjust to the conditions (tried to out-skill us rather than play wet weathernfooty) and our confidence grew from that.
Statistically we lost every catagory except tackles and obviously the scoreboard. We drew even on clearances. They smashed us in kicks and disposals. This may be in part to their domination in the first quarter and rhe evenness of wet weather footy. But also i think we were smarter and a little more efficient on the deck in the wet. Correction we also had more inside 50s.
Our backline held up really well got alot of respect for the group.
Rance and his fearless rebounding and spoiling, Dusty and Cotch played well. Vlastuin was really good. I I liked astburys game too.
Edwards and Griggs disposal in the wet was shocking but no suprises there i guess.
Soldo was pretty much useless outside of rucking (noting it was not a game for big men). Butler was quietish.
There were a few players who were quiet but some of their touches/involvements were best option or just excellent wet weather footy. I'd put C Ellis and Broad into this category. And possibly short and rioli.
If Miles played i definately think it would have been worth a couple of goals in the conditions. Particulary given the clearances were 50/50 he could have tipped that the other way. GWs also won the contested possessions which was suprising to me but apparently its true.
Toby greene is a little dog.
Finally umpires lost the plot. First quarter 23 frees paid before the heavens opened and something like 60 for the entire game (1 per 2 minutes of football). And alot of em were waaaaayy wrong. Compare that to 31 frees paid for the entire Freo v Haw game and the same for Bris vs Carlton.

Tony M, Dooks thank you for the detailed summary of the match. Looking forward to watching the replay when I finish work tonight.
Re: umpires. I have no idea why why they have it in for us. Obviously not the first time this season. Jayden Short's "deliberate" vs the bulldogs, Disallowing Caddy's goal vs Freo when Jack was "interfering," not calling 50 when Dusty's protected zone was stepped into etc. The shafting we get from the umpires is a mystery which is up there with is there life outside of the solar system, does God exist, and what is in the KFC 11 herbs and spices

Not surprised with that, they were chipping it around in their back half maintaining possession, that same crappy stuff that we used to do

RoCo's Wrap: Team trumps talent on both sides of town
Rohan Connolly
The Age
24 July 2017
The best 22 or the 22 best? If you wanted a case study for a philosophical debate about team versus talent, Sunday’s Richmond-GWS clash was the perfect vehicle.
It was also one which ultimately delivered a pretty emphatic verdict, too. And a finding as disturbing for the Giants as it was encouraging for the Tigers.
It would be hard to find a person in the football world who wouldn’t agree that GWS has by some margin the most talented list in the AFL. But it’s becoming increasingly hard to argue that the Giants as a result have the best team in the competition, even by the most fundamental measure.
Sunday’s 19-point loss to Richmond means GWS has now won just one of its last six games, and that sole success against the bottom team of the ladder.
Sure, injuries have played havoc with the line-up all season. But they’re not the sole reason the Giants are proving to be far from the dominant force many tipped when they fell just a goal short of a grand final spot last year.
The current injury list is still long. But of the 13 casualties officially listed during the week, only four players – Jeremy Cameron, Stephen Coniglio, Brett Deledio and Ryan Griffen – would be walk-up starts in the Giants’ best 22.
And after Coniglio and Deledio’s games in the NEAFL on Saturday, and with Cameron expected back for the round 19 game against Fremantle, that may be just one by next week. The Giants haven’t had their best line-up on the park. But selection hasn’t been a merry-go-round, either. In fact, only five teams have used fewer players thus far than the Giants’ 35.
What are the issues, then? Well, opponents have certainly privately held the view that Leon Cameron’s team might be short of a few “role players”, and can be a bit too individualistic at times. That’s not as harsh a call as “selfish” or “arrogant”, terms which understandably make the Giants bristle.
But it is an antonym of “co-operative”. And that is something the Tigers were far better at than GWS after quarter-time at the MCG, significantly, when the turn in the weather made that need even more pressing.
At quarter-time, when GWS led by 20 points and was doing it on the bit, the Giants had doubled Richmond for clearance wins, had racked up a dozen more contested possessions, led the tackle count and had had a mammoth 19 inside 50 entries to just seven.
As the rain descended and the Tigers got on top over the next two terms, it was they who led the hard ball gets, had a dozen more tackles despite winning more of the ball, and went inside 50 on 42 occasions to only 15. Little wonder they slammed on eight goals to only one.
Team? It’s hard to argue Toby Greene was doing much for his when he indulged another silly little burst of temper, a jumper punch on Alex Rance likely to earn him another week, if not two, on the sidelines courtesy of the MRP. They’re exactly the sort of petulant acts that have people doubting the team ethic of the Giants.
So what of the Tigers? Like many, I still find it hard to see them as a potential premier. Perhaps, though, that’s investing too much stock in sheer talent. Because as a combination which gets the best out of themselves, they have few peers.
Sure, the big guns Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin and Alex Rance again led the way. But a team which structurally still has its weaknesses, the lack of tall support for Jack Riewoldt the most glaring example, continues to find a way.
It’s the seemingly little things that help the Tigers get over the line, the forward pressure of the likes of Dan Butler and Jason Castagna, the tackling of Kane Lambert, Nick Vlastuin and Shaun Grigg, the unrefined but whole-hearted efforts of players like ruckman Toby Nankervis.
The result is a hard-earned top-four spot. And with only one of their remaining five games against a fellow top-eight team, the Tigers are every chance of hanging on to it, too.

Disgusting. The very definition of an ump not having a feel for the game (wet weather slide and didnt even take possession). And just plain wrong.
