Brandon Ellis contract: Defender to stay at Richmond
JAY CLARK,
Herald Sun
5 August 2017
RICHMOND defender Brandon Ellis is poised to re-sign a two-year contract in reward for his career-best season.
The Herald Sun can reveal the hard-running backman will be locked in until the end of 2019, when he will become a restricted free agent.
Ellis, who turned 24 on Thursday, turned down strong interest from several clubs to stay at Tigerland.
List chief Dan Richardson is expected to finalise negotiations with Ellis’s manager, Marty Pask, over the next week.
The small defender has had an outstanding 2017 season and is expected to contend for a top-five placing in Richmond’s best and fairest at the end of the season.
The No.15 draft pick has averaged 26 possessions a game running hot over the past 10 matches.
The prolific ball winner has also added a harder edge to his sweeping defensive game this season and has become a key plank in one of the league’s top defensive combinations led by Alex Rance.
The fresh contract for Ellis is a major coup for Richmond with the club remaining confident superstar midfielder and Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin will also stay at Punt Rd.

We will never ever win a premiership with any or all of BEllis, Houli and Grigg in the side.
-
Could be the little fish before the big fish.
We signed Conca just before Dusty ended up back with us in '13.

Agree

Which they will be for as long as Halfstep is coach.....

Also agree

I am not the biggest Bellis fan, but I think lately he has been pretty good.
I think it is harsh to say we would not win a flag with him in the team.
After all, Hawthorn won a flag with Schoenmakers in their side.
-
TRUE. Im not as worried about bellis than the other 2 mentioned, although even grigg has been okay.

We are talking about winning premierships. Not are they as poo as last year...
Do you think The Richmond FC can win a premiership with any of those players in the side??
Has anyone of them stood up in a big game ever?
-
There are 4 big games coming up for the RFC. A good test to see how bad or good they are. Hopefully past performances won't be predictors.... :rollin

i think we can win a flag with 1, not all but not with a guy leading who cant even win 1 final.
i think bellis has stood up in some games this year, but certainly not houli and to a lesser extent grigg. Thats my opinion of course.
-
Im not the biggest Bellis fan, but Ive been happy with his output since about rnd5 or 6. Seems to move the ball along a lot quicker and fwd these days, plus has a harder edge to his game.
-
Yes he's got his game up to a servicble level that any half-decent kid in their second or third season could achieve... :clapping
-
He can run fast in a straight line but I cringe in fear when he has to compete for a ball almost as much as he does
-
Having a great year but i am still cautious of him and Houli standing up when the heat is well and truly on. They both tend to handpass blind in tight situations often. Still overall happy with his year :clapping

Every team has them, weak links I'm referring to and ours are B.Ellis, Houli and Grigg
All have good games at times and sometimes shockers
If I was opposition analyst I would target them to apply constant pressure as they buckle quite easily.
-
You can't have 18 Rances...
Our bottom six is better than it has been in yonks.
We beat a form team by 6 goals without huge games from Cotch, Jack, Dusty. Pretty encouraging I would have thought.
-
Yeh but still our bottom six.
The ones who'll let us down in finals.

You are 100% right but what's wrong with wanting better than complete softies.
Seriously some people are just happy with being better than we have been.
stuff that!... we deserve better than that.

Can someone point out the moments Bellis crapped himself today, last week and over the last 10 or so weeks? Bc I have barely seen it in all honesty. I dont have him in the houli/grigg bracket anymore, has taken significant strides fwd this season.
He's also not playing back, Broad is and we look so much more solid with him back there. Replace Houli with short and I'd be very very happy
-
He did last week going back with the flight of the ball. Looked like he didn't want to put his body on the line

At what stage of the match?

11.15 left in the last
He's our softest player. If that was anyone else people would be all over it, but with Bellis it's the norm and we are immune

At what stage of the match?
I wish I could remember. We were going left of screen if that helps :lol
I've given the exact time
He half shat himself at one stage today , but was better
Simple fact though is that he's petrified
-
If he is our softest player then we are lucky.
15:20 left in the third quarter. No need to watch a reply, you'll find it in the highlights of the game on the AFL website (first highliught of the 3rd qtr they show). Ball in dispute, he goes hard and wins it. Admittedly his handpass went astray, but we end up getting it forward for Dusty to kick a goal.
Didn't look scared in that encounter, looked totally committed to winning the hard ball.

Going forward at the ball standing up he will go
Be great if you could point out an act of courage going with the flight, you won't find one

Cheers, definitely short stepped it, still reckon it's happening a lot less.
Also fwiw I reckon bellis has shown courage going back with the flight of the ball a fair few times, has been remarked here on oer that it's funny how he seemed to have courage in the air but not like standard hard body contact going in for the hardball

Transformed Tiger to stay for two more
afl.com.au
9 August 2017
RICHMOND has confirmed a new two-year deal for defender Brandon Ellis after a career-best season that has seen the former midfielder transform his game in a new role.
Ellis, who was coming out of contract, has signed a deal with the Tigers until the end of 2019 as the club continues to lock up key unsigned players while waiting on superstar Dustin Martin's signature.
The 24-year-old, whose deal was signed off late last week, has averaged 22.7 disposals as a defender this year, including a career-high seven contested possessions as a key player in the back six.
"It's exciting and I wanted to stay at the Tigers, it was just about getting everything right," Ellis told AFL.com.au.
"It's something off my mind now, which is good. The club has really looked after me and backed me in, so now I can just focus on the next few weeks and finals."
Ellis joins small forward Daniel Rioli and versatile midfielder Kamdyn McIntosh, who each recently signed on until the end of 2019, while wingman Shaun Grigg signed a one-year extension in May.
Richmond list manager Dan Richardson said Ellis had shown great improvement in 2017 and was a key signing for the club.
"He's become a really consistent player, and his change of roles this year has allowed him to taker his footy to another level again," Richardson said.
"He's finished second in our best and fairest before and he's played 100 consecutive games, so he's been one of our more consistent players we've had on our list for the past four or five years.
"Our defence as a team unit is having a really strong year, and he's become an important part of that."

How Brandon Ellis rediscovered his fight
afl.com.au
9 August 2017
THE FIGHT for the first groundball on game day starts early at Richmond as defender Brandon Ellis pushes off teammates and forces himself to the front of the queue to get the warm-up drill started.
Winning that first ball was a habit that started out of necessity to improve the contested aspect of his game and it has become a superstition for the defender, who has just re-signed for a further two seasons.
Coach Damien Hardwick is on side and won't start the drill until Ellis is ready to go – both on game day and during training – and his support has paid off.
Ellis has re-emerged as a key Tiger after two "average" seasons on the wing, moving to half-back where his harder edge in the contest has been one of the celebrated stories inside Punt Road Oval.
"That's obviously been one of my weaknesses through my career in the AFL and it's something I've worked really hard on," Ellis told AFL.com.au this week.
"So every groundball drill we get to do I like to go first to get it out of the way and start on a good note and put myself out there and under pressure situations.
"That's something I've started that I am superstitious about, so if we have a groundball drill I'll make sure I'm first in line.
"The boys try to push in front of me or force me to the back of the line, but 'Dimma' doesn't start now unless I'm at the front of the line so he's in for it as well."
Ellis recognised the need to improve his contested work when opposition midfielders started sitting on him after a breakout 2014 season and his impact as an outside runner plummeted across 2015-16.
When the plan was hatched with Hardwick last November to redeploy him to the "life and death" environment of the backline, he got to work in the gym and ramped up his groundball work after training.
"I'll never get off the track on a Tuesday or Thursday unless I've done five to 10 groundballs with the machine or the boxing bag where you have to turn your body and get the right technique," he said.
"I never miss one and that's helped me a lot this year with my groundballs.
"It's a bit like life and death down there in the backline, so if you don't go hard at the ball you know they're going to get over the top and get a goal.
"I worked really hard in the gym over the summer to get a bit stronger and put on a couple of kilos and I'm definitely more confident now going into a contest, both on the ground and in the air."
The proof of Ellis's improvement can be seen in the numbers, with his average groundball wins moving from 4.8 a game in 2016 to 5.9 in 2017. The percentage of his possessions won in the contest has lifted from 27.1 per cent last year to 32.1 per cent.
As well as the work on the track, a new mindset has been needed for Ellis to excel as a player whose commitment to the contest is evident now in every game he plays. Belief has been the key.
"If you go in with confidence and free mind and free spirit, it's a big weight off your shoulders," he says.
"Don't go in to the contest half-hearted or telling yourself 'if I stuff this up what's everyone going to think?' Just go in there and know that you've done all the work."
Ellis last extended his contract with the Tigers at the end of a breakout 2014 season, which saw him finish second in the club's best and fairest as a 21-year-old.
He played all 23 games that season, ranking No. 1 at the club for disposals (26.1 a game), No.1 for uncontested possessions (18.3, No.4 in the AFL),and No.1 for rebound 50s (4.0). The only way was up, it seemed.
"That year was awesome to have, but being my third year people expected me to just keep rising and taking it to a new level," Ellis said.
"But I probably stagnated. People expected big things and I didn't deliver and it was a bit of a downwards spiral.
"I don't think I had bad years but they were average years compared to 2014.
"This year with a shift to defence has rejuvenated my career and I'm loving playing down there."
Ellis says 2017 has been his most enjoyable season and it is a popular sentiment among Tigers players as they challenge for a top-two finish and a return to finals.
Winning is an obvious reason for the lifted spirits at Tigerland, but the licence to "just play footy and have fun" has been crucial.
Ellis says the players are as close as they've been in his six seasons at the club and the culture has changed for the better.
Standing in front of the group pre-season and sharing something the rest of the players would not have known about you was a turning point.
Ellis shared the story of his childhood and adolescence, sharing a bedroom with his brother from age seven to 18. He moved in with a host family after being drafted because he needed his own bedroom.
"That's something they didn't know about me and with lot of boys I'd been playing with for six years, there were things I didn't know about them," Ellis said.
"You open up to each other and it automatically brings you closer and the love you get for one another grows. It's been a massive step for us this year.
"That off-field stuff really shows on-field and it shows in your performances."
