Herald Sun
5 August 2017RICHMOND defender Brandon Ellis is poised to re-sign a two-year contract in reward for his career-best season.
The Herald Sun can reveal the hard-running backman will be locked in until the end of 2019, when he will become a restricted free agent.
Ellis, who turned 24 on Thursday, turned down strong interest from several clubs to stay at Tigerland.
List chief Dan Richardson is expected to finalise negotiations with Ellis’s manager, Marty Pask, over the next week.
The small defender has had an outstanding 2017 season and is expected to contend for a top-five placing in Richmond’s best and fairest at the end of the season.
The No.15 draft pick has averaged 26 possessions a game running hot over the past 10 matches.
The prolific ball winner has also added a harder edge to his sweeping defensive game this season and has become a key plank in one of the league’s top defensive combinations led by Alex Rance.
The fresh contract for Ellis is a major coup for Richmond with the club remaining confident superstar midfielder and Brownlow Medal favourite Dustin Martin will also stay at Punt Rd.
