Anthony Miles set to continue career at another club after struggling to break into Richmond’s best 22

RICHMOND’S VFL Grand Final will almost certainly be Anthony Miles’ last game with the Tigers as rival clubs chase the clearance specialist.
Miles has been largely overlooked in the Tigers’ campaign despite finishing fourth (2015) and sixth (2016) in the past two Jack Dyer Medals.
At just 25 and with elite clearance statistics, he is certain to move on to a club where he can play regular senior games.
He was best afield with 34 disposals in the VFL preliminary final win against Box Hill but has not played AFL since Round 20.
His chances of an AFL recall would rest on a preliminary final injury to a Tigers star rather than continued good form.
Clubs including Essendon, Carlton, West Coast and Brisbane need to build the engine room of their midfields and are likely to be among the contenders for his services.
He has averaged 32 disposals, 15 contested possessions and eight clearances at VFL level this year, all in the elite bracket.
Miles was promoted to play Gold Coast in Round 19 and had 23 disposals, eight clearances and eight tackles, but was dropped a game later.
He has been told his lack of versatility has counted against him in a midfield where many players can push forward or play half-back.
The Tigers have secured most of their big-name stars for future seasons after signing Dustin Martin on a seven-year deal.
They seem certain to re-sign Jacob Townsend after a star cameo late in the season as an accountable forward on a goalkicking hot streak.
The Tigers will also look to extend Shai Bolton’s contract past 2018 with manager Ralph Carr after a first year of growth.
He has played only six AFL games after being recruited with pick 29 in last year’s draft, but showed flashes of brilliance.
He is likely to play in the VFL Grand Final rather than AFL preliminary final but is pushing hard to replace one of the club’s fleet of small forwards.
Ivan Maric has retired and Ben Lennon seems destined for the trade table again after failing to win a regular place in the AFL.
Shaun Hampson and Sam Lloyd are contracted for 2018, with the ex-Carlton ruckman back in solid VFL form after recovering from a serious back injury.
Lloyd has banged down the selection door with solid VFL performances but the last of his eight AFL games this year was in Round 16.

Shame we won't get anything for him. He's worth at least a third rounder. Almost better off to offer him a 1 year contract (not that he'd sign if he gets stronger offers elsewhere).
-
that's disappointing!
why wouldn't he stay? what's to say he couldn't get back into the team?

so much bunkum going around about flexability or versatility.
And outside of Martin and possibly Caddy what mids do we have that can play consistently well fwd or back.Cotchin is not a goal kicker Townsend is not a mid. Prestia fmd has one role he does well.Grigg omg we hang onto that softie and let miles go.Ahh whats the point the debate has raged all yr and moaning about it wont change a thing.
All ive got left is Every club has pure inside mids but when it comes to miles that is ignored. Cant play him hes not versatile enough lol.

Shut the stuff up claw

Were spoiled having such a strong inside midfielder waiting in the wings this year. He is too good to be a VFL player. Does irk me that we'll have to effectively give him away for free. Is worth a draft pick (I agree with you Dougey - 3rd rounder) but out of our hands. Graham has left past him due to his excellent defensive skills and running. The recruitment of a certain Father&Son should help ease the pain somewhat but I'll be sad to see him go

How the eff has Graham gone past Miles jeezus h Geez. Im enthused about Jack Graham as the next bloke but its ga ga land to say hes a better player than Miles maybe in a few yrs time and he may never be as good inside.

Pearls of wisdom C, agree 100 pc

Agree with Claw on this one.
-
I disagree.
It's not about player A being better than player B because Miles is a far more accomplished player than Graham at this point in time. It's what they bring to the table that can benefit the side so we can win. It's like a jigsaw puzzle where Miles is the bigger piece but Graham just fits better.
In the first quarter against Geelong he had laid 6 great tackles which together with Cotch set the tone of the game. We won the inside ball anyway so having Miles instead would not have given us anything more in that area but we have lost his tackling pressure.
Graham in the team just gives us better balance IMHO.

Miles does lay the odd tackle or 2 as well.
I guess Graham is the future and we do have a wealth of mids.
Anthony just misses because of Prestia, if we lose him it is very unfortunate.
Gee remember how long it took for Dimbo to give him a game? He is probably related to Tucky.
Best of luck to him as he has a great ethic.

There goes the depth :snidegrin

I know Miles can't get a game, bit I am not sure we do have a wealth of mids.

yep im with you on this.
and if Miles goes we should get a reasonably decent pick/player in return. remember we got him for nothing. in this context its a win.

Where would Miles sit in our best 28 players??

Not even close.....

I would be pushing for a mid-late 2nd round pick personally but we'll probably just do the right thing and facilitate a move that benefits his career.
After seeing Hunt given so many chances he has a right to feel aggrieved IMO.
Good luck to him.

To be clear - Miles can pretty much go wherever he wants. His contract ends this season.

Yeah. I think it will be a mutual agreement though. Richmond threw him a lifeline when his career was shot. He's a nice bloke and I don't think he'll want to string up the club, but I also think we'll facilitate a trade of his choice. Maybe just grab a pick for some points towards Naish...
-
He's unlucky but boy did Prestia and Caddy perform when it mattered most .
-
Let's hope they can back it up this week when it will matter even more.... :shh
-
Reckon Jonty Scharenberg as a late pick/rookie would be the perfect replacement for Miles... :shh

I am still amazed that no one took him as a rookie.

I have always loved Miles and have always had big wraps for him. He works hard and even though he doesn't do the super flashy stuff he gives us first use of the ball. Really helped us win the 9 in a row in 2014, was also solid in 2015 and laid a good amount of tackles that stick even though we were a "low tackling side"
He is only 26 next year and would still be able to do a lot of grunt work for the next few years but for reasons I can't fathom they don't play him. I am still of the mindset Dimma just hates him for no good reason ala Tuck.
I just pray to god we are healthy for 2017 because if we get an injury to an inside mid we are stuffed.
-
Gold Coast would be fools not to grab him. They badly need hard bodied mid's.
Brissy could do with him too.

Agree. I hope he resigns but understand if he does not given the way he has been treated.
-

he would be in the top 4 mids we have based on output and reliability.
MARTIN, COTCHIN, PRESTIA, then MILES.
As a mid i prefer and think he has easily outperformed all of
Lambert, Grigg, C Ellis , Caddy, Townsend, Graham, edwards, Conca, McIntosh, Menadue B Ellis.
When you look at this last group you cant but relise how much reliance falls on the first 3 and first two in particular.
-
I am a bit dirty on how Miles has been treated, has been consistently solid as a ball winner in the tight stuff, never shirked it, always put in. I hope he is rewarded for his hard work somewhere else if he is not appreciated by the Tiges.
-
Miles was told he would be played with certain other players due to his abilities.
I'm assuming this was relating to his leg speed. Hard to play guys like him and Caddy in the same team when we are trying to play much faster football.
Shame though, crowd favourite and personal favourite.
-
Disagree he has easily outperformed Lambert
Think Lambert has been VERY good

Lambert has been awesome this year . Unbelievable he wasn't in the rd 1 team .

Townsend is not playing as a mid at the moment but he was playing as a mid early in the season and last year. He changed his role to a forward mid (VFL) and played unbelievably consistent footy. He is comfortable playing as a mid whenever required.
