I heard somewhere that the Swans will be treating this game fairly seriously bringing up to Carrara close to their best side.

Should we do the same to test where we are at at this stage or should we go with mainly youngsters again and give them more AFL gametime this time against the reigining premiers even if we get pumped?

Swans & Tigers for NAB Challenge at Carrara
aflq.com.au

The Sydney Swans, fairytale AFL premiers of 2005, will head to the Gold Coast next week to meet the Richmond Tigers in the NAB Regional Challenge.

The Swans-Tigers showdown at Carrara on Saturday night, 11 March (7.10pm) was confirmed by the AFL today, giving Queensland AFL fans their first look at the Swans since they broke a 72-year premiership drought when they beat the West Coast Eagles by four points in the 2005 AFL grand final.

It could also see a homecoming for Richmond’s ex-Gold Coast trio of Trent Knobel, Andrew Raines and Luke McGuane.

Ruckman Knobel (pictured), is now established in the senior side. Originally from Broadbeach and now 25, he has played a total of 72 AFL games with Brisbane, St.Kilda and Richmond, including 18 with the Tigers last year after switching from Moorabbin.

Midfielder Raines, the son of ex-AFL champion Geoff Raines and a Southport product, will look to consolidate a senior spot this year after playing one AFL game late in 2004 and adding a further six senior appearances last year.

Utility player McGuane, a Queensland Under 18 representative drafted from Broadbeach in 2004, will look to break into the top side after spending most of his first season with the Tigers on the sideline with a badly broken arm.

Tickets for the Sydney-Richmond game will go on sale immediately – they are available from all Ticketmaster outlets and on-line at ticketmaster.com.au.

Prices are:-

General Admission Tickets
Adults - $12.80
Juniors (6-14) - $3.10
Children (U6) – free
Concession - $7.80
Family (2A&2C) - $35.60

Reserved Seating
Adults - $22.80
Juniors (6-14) - $8.10
Children (U6) – $6.10
Concession - $17.80
Family (2A&2C) - $57.80

Also, match organisers have confirmed that the free shuttle buses, which carried a heavy load in transporting patrons to Carrara from Nerang Railway Station and Surfers Paradise via Broadbeach and Pacific Fair, will be in operation again.

Confirmation of the two teams for the NAB Challenge match completes the list of 16 AFL matches to be played in south-east Queensland this year – four at Carrara and 12 at the Gabba.

Sydney and Richmond each will now make the first of two visits to Queensland next week, joining Adelaide, Essendon, Hawthorn and Melbourne as twin travellers to the Sunshine State.

Carlton, Fremantle, Geelong, St.Kilda, Western Bulldogs and West Coast will play once in Queensland, leaving Collingwood, the Kangaroos and Port Adelaide as the only three clubs not to venture north this year.

I hope we take it seriously MT.

I don't want to pay my hard earned to see us get spanked by the Ducks (even if it is only a practice match).

However if we played a lot of kids and they showed me they could be competitive, that would be even better.

Will post a report of the game.

Tigers wary of improving Swans
ABC site
Thursday, March 9, 2006. 10:43am (AEDT)

Richmond coach Terry Wallace says he is treating this weekend's AFL challenge match with the Sydney Swans as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming premiership season.

The Tigers will meet the reigning premiers at Carrara on the Gold coast this Saturday night.

Wallace said he felt his side could give a good account of themselves against Sydney's experienced line-up.

"We were able to knock them over at the MCG last year so we've always played fairly well against them, but obviously they're a very developed squad and getting stronger as the summer months go," he said.

Wallace said although the Swans lost by 31 points to the Kangaroos in the first round of the AFL preseason cup, he believed they were not far away from the form that won them last year's premiership.

"I actually had a look at them play in a practice match down in Melbourne last week and they're just starting to get back to the real strength that they had in the grand final last year," he said.

Meanwhile, the AFL will use a limited trial of allowing boundary and goal umpires to award free kicks in the preseason challenge match between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs at Princes Park on Friday.

The boundary and goal umpires will be restricted to making decisions on issues such as throwing the ball, pushing players in the back and illegal blocking.

The AFL said the trial was aimed at assessing whether the boundary and goal umpires could pay free kicks that were not able to be seen by the field umpire.

Title: Raines returns home (Gold Coast Bulletin)

Raines returns home
Gold Coast Bulletin
9Mar06

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace yesterday had some good news and some bad news for Tigers fans on the Gold Coast.

The good news is Richmond will be bringing their strongest possible squad north for the NAB Regional Challenge match against reigning premiers Sydney at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

The unfortunate advice from Wallace though was that only one of his three Gold Coast products currently at Richmond, utility Andrew Raines, will get to play in front of home-town fans.

The other two, ruckman Trent Knobel and tall utility Luke McGuane, will be turning out with Richmond's reserves in Melbourne.

Knobel is not far enough advanced in his pre-season program, said Wallace, and teenager McGuane is still on the 'improvers' list.

"Trent has played only 50 minutes of footy so far, so he will be in the reserves," said Wallace.

"And Luke is just not at that selection level yet, even though he's developing nicely.

"But Rainsey will definitely be playing. He really is playing some good footy."

Wallace said he is treating Saturday night's clash as 'almost a full dress rehearsal' for the start of the season in three weeks.

He welcomed news from Sydney the Swans are likely to name 19 players from last year's grand final side for the Carrara engagement as they, too, go for as strong a squad as possible.

"That's good because they were obviously the benchmark last year even though we did beat them in Melbourne in our only match," he said.

"At this stage of the year it's a great opportunity for us to see where we stand.

"Obviously they're playing a fairly full squad and we're playing a fairly full squad, so hopefully that makes for a good game."

Star forward Nathan Brown, on the way back from a broken leg last season, will 'definitely' be playing against Sydney, as will other Richmond headliners Matthew Richardson, Joel Bowden and skipper Kane Johnson.

Wallace agreed the pre-season match should provide the AFL with a good guide of what to expect later this year when two premiership matches are played at Gold Coast Stadium.

The AFL was very pleased with the 13,000 fans who watched the Brisbane-Essendon NAB Cup match last month, but they will be watching this weekend's exercise more closely.

"You have two teams, one of them the premiers, so you think there'd be a bit of interest in it," said Wallace.

"If people are legitimately keen to see AFL matches played in southeast Queensland on a weekly basis, then they should support this one."

Ticket sales for the match have been 'good', according to organisers. Prices are $12.80 for general admission and $22.80 for reserved seats.

Tigers boosted by return of key players

Richmond will be close to full strength when it takes on reigning premier Sydney in a practice match at the Brisbane Bears' old home ground Carrara this Saturday night.

The Tigers, coming off a 78-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Shepparton last weekend, will regain the services of key players such as captain Kane Johnson, Matthew Richardson, Chris Newman, Troy Simmonds and Greg Stafford, for the clash with the Swans.

"We'll be taking a much stronger squad up there," said Richmond's Football Operations Manager Paul Armstrong.

"The guys that we rested last week will all play, along with the experienced players who returned to the line-up last week - Gaspar, Kellaway, Coughlan, Brown, etc.

"From all reports, Sydney will have a fairly strong side in, so that will be a good test for us up against the reigning premiers.

"We're looking forward to playing at Carrara and seeing how the facilities have apparently improved since footy was last played there a decade or so ago.

"It'll be an interesting exercise as far as the AFL's concerned as to whether football on the Gold Coast will attract a crowd in a game that doesn't involve the Lions. I think that's the basic reason behind why we're playing there."

With Richmond scheduled to play six games interstate this season, the Club believes the trip to Queensland this weekend will prove most beneficial.

"The more our guys get used to traveling the better," Armstrong said.

"You tend to think that traveling interstate as a group is good for the bonding amongst the guys . . .

"We're going to stay in Brisbane on the Friday night, get a bus down to Carrara on the Saturday, play the game, and then stay in Brisbane Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday morning."

The 28-man Richmond squad for Saturday night's match against Sydney at Carrara is:

Richmond squad: Chris Newman , Darren Gaspar, Brett Deledio, Andrew Raines, Troy Simmonds, Nathan Brown, Thomas Roach, Greg Stafford, Joel Bowden, Matthew Richardson, Trent Knobel, Patrick Bowden, Kane Johnson, Ray Hall, Shane Tuck, Daniel Jackson, Mark Coughlan, Jay Schulz, Adam Pattison, Andrew Krakouer, Richard Tambling, Chris Hyde, Greg Tivendale, Brent Hartigan, Cleve Hughes, Andrew Kellaway, Nathan Foley, Jeremy Humm

In: Newman, Simmonds, Stafford, Joel, Richo, Johnson
Out: Polo, Rodan, Limbach, Meyer, White, Thursfield, McGuane

Sydney squad: Leo Barry, Craig Bolton, Jude Bolton, Amon Buchanan, Paul Chambers, Nick Davis, Sean Dempster, Stephen Doyle, Nic Fosdike, Adam Goodes, Heath Grundy, Barry Hall, Darren Jolly, Brett Kirk, Jarrad McVeigh, Nick Malceski, Ben Mathews, Jarred Moore, Ryan O'Keefe, Michael O'Loughlin, Ted Richards, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Tim Schmidt, Adam Schneider, David Spriggs, Luke Vogels, Paul Williams.

Sydney are supposed to be playing 19 blokes from the premiership side (that's what Tezza said last night) so it should be a good game.

The Tigers not going will be playing in the Coburg praccy game this week

The AFL coaches/basketball curse strikes again. Three seasons ago Sydney's Paul Roos needed crutches as he led his Swans into the final series after rupturing his Achilles tendon playing basketball. Well, the same sport has now claimed Richmond coach Terry Wallace, who came to grief in a match a few days back and will now have to continue his team's 2006 preparations while sporting a broken finger.

From aflq.com.au

Richmond, coming off a 78-point victory over the Western Bulldogs in Shepparton last weekend, will be close to full-strength after regaining key players in captain Kane Johnson, Matthew Richardson, Chris Newman, Troy Simmonds and Greg Stafford.

The inclusion of Richardson means that two of the game's truly elite forwards will be in action, with Richardson at one end and Sydney powerhouse Barry Hall at the other.

“We’ll be taking a much stronger squad up there,” said Football Operations Manager Paul Armstrong. “The guys that we rested last week will all play, along with the experienced players who returned to the line-up last week – Gaspar, Kellaway, Coughlan, Brown, etc.

“We’re looking forward to playing at Carrara and seeing how the facilities have apparently improved since footy was last played there a decade or so ago.

“We’re going to stay in Brisbane on the Friday night, get a bus down to Carrara on the Saturday, play the game, and then stay in Brisbane Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday morning.”

Also in the Richmond squad are Gold Coast pair Trent Knobel and Andrew Raines.

Brian Royal to lecture Gold Coast coaches
aflq.com.au

Richmond assistant-coach Brian Royal will offer a special insight into stoppage play when he makes a VIP appearance at the Gold Coast Level 1 coaching course on Saturday.

In a fantastic gesture at extra short notice, Royal will visit the Level 1 course at Surfers Paradise Football Club less than three hours before the Tigers’ NAB Challenge match against the Sydney Swans at Carrara.

This comes on top of a similar gesture in Cairns last Saturday night when Geelong assistant-coach Andy Lovell filled a similar role prior to the NAB Cup game, and underlines the willingness of AFL coaches to help spread the game in the developing markets.

Among other things Royal will discuss the all-important stoppages in his address to about 60 local coaches before heading to Carrara for the 7.10pm start to the Tigers-Swans clash.

Royal will bring a wealth of football experience to the Level 1 course. He was a brilliant rover who played 199 games for Footscray from 1983-1993, winning the Bulldogs’ B&F in his debut season. He also played eight State-of-Origin games for Victoria, and earned All-Australian selection in 1986.

He later coached Victorian country club Leongatha to the grand final in 1994 and to a premiership the next year before spending time on the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, providing valuable back-up to then senior coach Terry Wallace.

He was an assistant coach at Melbourne for four years and had a stint as an assistant coach with the Kangaroos before reuniting with ex-Bulldog teammate Wallace at Punt Road in late 2004.

Swans slump to 13th loss
By Daniel Pace
foxsports
March 11, 2006

SYDNEY is yet to record a victory since its fairytale AFL premiership win following a 40-point hiding at the hands of a rampant Richmond in an NAB Challenge practice tonight.

The Swans have lost their fifth match this year 13.11 (89) to 7.7 (49) and have plummeted to a shocking 0-13 record in pre-season games since Paul Roos became head coach in 2002.

They were completely outplayed in the second half tonight and looked far from the potent side which defeated West Coast by four points in the 2005 premiership decider.

Both clubs fielded near full-strength teams at Carrara Stadium where a 6277 watched a lacklustre and at times scrappy match.

It was star forward Matthew Richardson who did most of the damage, bagging four goals for the Tigers.

He was well supported by midfielder Kayne Pettifer and Brent Hartigan while forwards Ryan O'Keefe and Barry Hall were best on ground for the Swans.

Sydney was dealt a minor blow in the opening quarter when wingman Nic Fosdike suffered a broken nose and a corked thigh in a sickening head collision with Tigers half forward Brett Deledio.

A groggy Fosdike was stretchered off the field and took no further part in the encounter.

The Tigers trailed 1.6 (12) to 2.1.(13) at quarter-time due to some woeful kicking in front as they missed five consecutive set shots after Swans forward Barry Hall grabbed the opening goal from a stuff.

Richardson kicked two straight goals early in the second quarter to give the Tigers the ascendency and from that point they obliterated the Swans, who fell behind by 16 points at half-time.
Hall jagged two goals in the third quarter and Nick Malceski added another in the 15th minute but that failed to step the blood flow as the Tigers went up a few extra gears.

Richmond kicked the next six goals to lead 83-40 late in the final quarter and the Swans didn't nail another goal until seconds before the final siren.

Brisbane will meet Collingwood next Saturday in another practice match on the Gold Coast, where the AFL has scheduled two premiership games this year.

Tigers comfortably defeat Swans

Andrew Browne at Carrara
Exclusive to afl.com.au

Richmond has continued its positive build-up to the premiership season by easily defeating the Sydney Swans by 40 points in their NAB Challenge match at Carrara on Saturday night.

Following a slow and inaccurate start, the Tigers - through their tall and more effective forward line - eventually overcame a slightly disappointing performance by the reigning premiers to triumph 13.11.(89) to 7.7.(49) with spearhead Matthew Richardson booting four goals and big man Greg Stafford two.

The Swans remain winless during the 2006 pre-season and remarkably have now lost 13 pre-season matches under Paul Roos since he took over the coaching job in 2002.

The Tigers established a 16-point lead by half-time courtesy of two quick goals to Richardson - who proved a handful for former Essendon player Ted Richards - at the top of the quarter and then late goals to Kayne Pettifer and Nathan Brown gave them the momentum at the main break.

An even third term saw both teams score three goals apiece before the Tigers broke away to a six-goal lead at the start of the final quarter with three goals in as many minutes to Coughlan, Stafford and Richardson to put the game beyond the Swans' reach.

Brown would be pleased with his form in his second game back since breaking his leg last season with coach Terry Wallace confident enough to give him a bit of time on the ball as well as around the goals underneath the taller forwards Richardson, Stafford and young improver Daniel Jackson.

Besides Richardson and Stafford up front, the Tigers were well served by players such as Kayne Pettifer, Shane Tuck and Richard Tambling who were amongst 25 players and an interchange bench used like a revolving door by Wallace in the confidence-boosting hit-out.

The Swans had few players who stood out, especially after half-time but Luke Ablett, Ryan O'Keefe and defender Craig Bolton could hold their heads high.

Michael O'Loughlin, playing his first game since last year's grand final, was given a solid work out by Roos by spending all but a few minutes of each quarter on the field. He at times ventured away from the goal square where he picked several touches up the field and will no doubt benefit from the run.

Besides the Tigers' poor kicking for goal, the opening term was marred by a sickening collision between Swans utility Nic Fosdike and Tiger young gun Brett Deledio on Richmond's half-forward line just prior to the break.

Both players showed tremendous courage as a high ball was kicked from a centre bounce after second-year player Adam Pattison had finally shown his more experienced Tiger teammates how to kick straight following six behinds - all from set shots.

Fosdike ran in from the wing with pace and Deledio from the forward line when the players met heavily. The Swans player was momentarily knocked out and with blood streaming from a broken nose, was carried off on a stretcher and took no further part in the game.

Deledio showed no ill effects from the clash to stay on the ground and be useful contributor along with fellow youngsters Brent Hartigan and Nathan Foley who displayed plenty of dash and Andrew Raines, who no doubt enjoyed kicking a goal in the final term in his return to the Gold Coast in front of family and friends.

For their final tune-ups before the premiership season, the Swans will attempt to regain some winning form against St Kilda in Newcastle next Saturday while the Tigers meet Essendon in Mildura on Friday night.

While the crowd of 6277 did not match the figure from the opening NAB Cup game between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon for the second match scheduled at Carrara in 2006, Gold Coasters will receive a bonus next week with confirmation the Lions will play Collingwood in an NAB Challenge match at the venue next Saturday night.

Just arrived home (I drove back to Brisvegas).

I'll just add a little that I saw as I think the report is pretty much right.

We are very lucky Lids wasn't hurt more seriously in his clash with Fosdike, it was sickening stuff. Both guys fully committed and went for the ball absolutely wiping each other out, Fosdike did not move.

Goal kicking was very poor to begin but improved throughout the night.

I thought Tiv was very ordinary particularly in the second Q when he turned it over on our forward 50. Improved? Not on that performance.

Pettifer from what I saw, and I swapped to our scoring end all night, was BOG.
He looked different, good, important to the side. He looked confident and if Petts is anything he is a confidence player.

Richo was himself, awsome, he missed a few set shots but he is clearly our most important player. We are Richo focused going in to our forward line, as always, but this is because his marking demands that we are.

Patto did some nice things in the second half but as others have said on this site before there is little hope for him to become a CHF. Smaller than I thought too.

Pat Bowden shut Goodes out of the game, no mean feat IMO, anyway I was impressed.

Bling got the biggest noises from the crowd with his pace and ability, unlucky not to have kicked a couple. He could exert more defencive pressure though with his he should gobble up attackers but he is hesitent in defence.

Raines really deserved his goal at the end. Certainty for round 1.

Finally...... Roach and Tiv probably played themselves out of the round 1 team, Hartigan was poorish also. The rest................ I was very happy

Krak did pretty well, not sure how many possies, but he had it a bit and laid a couple of nice tackles

Coaches say from the Herald-Sun (added to the foxsports article):

Tigers coach Terry Wallace was pleased with the victory but noted his team had enjoyed an extra four weeks of pre-season training than the Swans after finishing 12th last season.

"You'd expect from that aspect we were just that more rounded in conditioning but they'll always test you out physically and mentally," Wallace added.

"It was a pretty close, checking type game for a long period and that's the manner in which they played their footy.

"To be able to deal with that, handle that and match that, it was a good hit-out for us.

"The most pleasing aspect at this time of the year is to come out without any injuries."

Swans coach Paul Roos said next week's practice game against St Kilda in Newcastle was a more vital test of his team's standing leading into its season-opening clash with Essendon on April 1.

"As a coach you have to analyse it correctly and make smart deductions from the game rather than jumping at shadows," Roos said about the loss.

"They're a month further advanced and their skills were better than ours.

"That's why next week and the week after become important for us in preparation for round one."

Great report HT. Very much appreciated  :clapping  :cheers. It's a 3 hour drive from Brissie to the Gold Coast?

A couple of questions ....

Was Pettifer still trying to avoid using his left hand with the broken finger?

and How did Schulz and the rest of our defence go against Barry Hall, O'Loughlin, Davis and co?

1 hour and a bit to get home MT game finished just before 10 my time that's 11 in Mexico. ;D

I was watching from the HFF's for the entire game I didn't notice Petts having any problems with his hand. He was BOG for me just because he had a great game defencivley particularly in the second half.

Shulz was OK didn't play much (at all?) on Hall which was strange. If the tiges want him as a CHB I would have thought they thow him in the deep end. Bowden played on Hall was quite good.

It was our mids which won us the game Sydney got a lot less chances than us. The Ducks strait kicking kept them in it early.

Davis was good for the Swans he can really move not sure who played on him but he was on top in the first half.

Swans really do play ugly football. The bash and crash was on display in the first half. Kicking backwards move than forwards in the second. I don't know how they don't have more injuries.

Thanks for that HT.

On Sports Tonight and on Ch 7 news they showed the head-on collison between Lids and Fosdike. Ouch!  :o. Lucky Lids had the awareness to turn to his side.

X, can you ask your mate how Rainsey went please

Moi here's Wallace's comments on your boy after the Carrara game from the AFLQ site:

Richmond coach Terry Wallace had special praise for ex-Gold Coaster Andrew Raines, the son of former AFL champion Geoff Raines who was drafted by the Tigers from Southport.

“He (Raines) keeps putting his hand up … he just keeps doing the right thing to show he’s matured a lot as a footballer. He’s certainly enhanced his reputation and one of his attacks of the football in the fourth quarter was just outstanding,” said Wallace.

Raines, looking so much like his illustrious father who played for Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon and the Brisbane Bears, played mainly in defence for the Tigers but also spent time in the midfield and slotted a beautiful running goal in the final stanza.

The 19-year-old has only played seven AFL games – six last year after his debut in 2004 – but already he looks to have pencilled his name into the starting line-up for round 1 of the premiership.

Tigers pass a key test at Carrara

Richmond coach Terry Wallace was impressed with the way his charges went about their business in last Saturday night's practice match against reigning premier Sydney at Carrara.

Although stressing the fact the Swans have a poor record in recent pre-season matches (0-13 since Paul Roos took over as coach), so you shouldn't read too much into form at this time of the year, Wallace took quite a bit out of the Tigers' 40-point win.

"Notwithstanding their pre-season record, I think they (Sydney) had only about three or four of their premiership players missing . . . they had most of their blokes up and running. We had a couple missing in Ray Hall and David Rodan. The balance of the two sides that went up there was about even, so it was a pretty good effort by our boys," Wallace said.

"We were just nice and solid in the way that we played our football.

"I thought that over the whole game we held sway. We had more scoring shots than them each quarter, so it wasn't won in a 15-20-minute burst. The win came about through some pretty consistent footy.

"And, it was a fairly hard game played the way Sydney like it - tight and hard in close - and we were able to match them quite well in those areas.

"Admittedly, we're probably a little more advanced than them - by about a few weeks - but it's only two weeks to the start of the season now, so it's getting close . . ."

Wallace was particularly pleased with the team's delivery of the ball last Saturday night under the Carrara lights.

"Our use of the ball was very good. Going back to the NAB Cup opener against Hawthorn, I thought we over-used the ball something chronic. Our kick-to-handball ratio that afternoon was way out of line . . . we had nearly as many handpasses as what we had kicks. We've got the balance of that back to where we want it over the past couple of weeks," he said.

"And, our forward line play has been a lot better, too. We kicked 13 goals against Sydney, but we missed a few set shots that we shouldn't have in the first quarter when we scored 1.6.

"So, it was potentially a 16-goal game for us, against a pretty stingy opposition, who normally don't get many goals kicked against them. Overall, I thought we were pretty competent in the way that we went about it."

From an individual perspective, Wallace praised the efforts of several players . . .

"Tucky' continues to shine, while we've got our two key defenders in Kellaway and Gaspar playing some really strong, solid footy. Troy Simmonds, over the past 2-3 weeks has been outstanding in the ruck. 'Rainesy' again played a top-line game as a backman. And, 'Richo' was a standout, taking 13 marks for the game and kicking four goals. He played high centre half-forward, so he was up the ground a bit and he really got on his bike. He was very, very mobile and did a really good job for us," Wallace said.

And, as for the weekly question about Nathan Brown's progress, Wallace had this to say . . .

"Browny' continues to improve. I thought he took another step in the right direction. He had about 18 possessions, so he's just started to ramp it up a bit."
