The AFL coaches/basketball curse strikes again. Three seasons ago Sydney's Paul Roos needed crutches as he led his Swans into the final series after rupturing his Achilles tendon playing basketball. Well, the same sport has now claimed Richmond coach Terry Wallace, who came to grief in a match a few days back and will now have to continue his team's 2006 preparations while sporting a broken finger.

From aflq.com.au

Richmond, coming off a 78-point victory over the Western Bulldogs in Shepparton last weekend, will be close to full-strength after regaining key players in captain Kane Johnson, Matthew Richardson, Chris Newman, Troy Simmonds and Greg Stafford.

The inclusion of Richardson means that two of the game's truly elite forwards will be in action, with Richardson at one end and Sydney powerhouse Barry Hall at the other.

“We’ll be taking a much stronger squad up there,” said Football Operations Manager Paul Armstrong. “The guys that we rested last week will all play, along with the experienced players who returned to the line-up last week – Gaspar, Kellaway, Coughlan, Brown, etc.

“We’re looking forward to playing at Carrara and seeing how the facilities have apparently improved since footy was last played there a decade or so ago.

“It’ll be an interesting exercise as far as the AFL’s concerned as to whether football on the Gold Coast will attract a crowd in a game that doesn’t involve the Lions. I think that’s the basic reason behind why we’re playing there.”

With Richmond scheduled to play six games interstate this season, the brainstrust believes the trip to Queensland this weekend will prove most beneficial. The more our guys get used to traveling the better,” Armstrong said. “You tend to think that traveling interstate as a group is good for the bonding amongst the guys . . .

“We’re going to stay in Brisbane on the Friday night, get a bus down to Carrara on the Saturday, play the game, and then stay in Brisbane Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday morning.”

Also in the Richmond squad are Gold Coast pair Trent Knobel and Andrew Raines.

Brian Royal to lecture Gold Coast coaches

Brian Royal to lecture Gold Coast coaches
aflq.com.au

Richmond assistant-coach Brian Royal will offer a special insight into stoppage play when he makes a VIP appearance at the Gold Coast Level 1 coaching course on Saturday.

In a fantastic gesture at extra short notice, Royal will visit the Level 1 course at Surfers Paradise Football Club less than three hours before the Tigers’ NAB Challenge match against the Sydney Swans at Carrara.

This comes on top of a similar gesture in Cairns last Saturday night when Geelong assistant-coach Andy Lovell filled a similar role prior to the NAB Cup game, and underlines the willingness of AFL coaches to help spread the game in the developing markets.

Among other things Royal will discuss the all-important stoppages in his address to about 60 local coaches before heading to Carrara for the 7.10pm start to the Tigers-Swans clash.

Royal will bring a wealth of football experience to the Level 1 course. He was a brilliant rover who played 199 games for Footscray from 1983-1993, winning the Bulldogs’ B&F in his debut season. He also played eight State-of-Origin games for Victoria, and earned All-Australian selection in 1986.

He later coached Victorian country club Leongatha to the grand final in 1994 and to a premiership the next year before spending time on the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, providing valuable back-up to then senior coach Terry Wallace.

He was an assistant coach at Melbourne for four years and had a stint as an assistant coach with the Kangaroos before reuniting with ex-Bulldog teammate Wallace at Punt Road in late 2004.

The Carrara surface looks in good nick which is good. As long as we come away with no injuries I'll be happy.

And to think we went within a whisker during the mid 80s of this being our home ground  :-X.
