Match preview: Fremantle v Richmond
AFL.com.au
Travis King
May 7, 2019
Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday May 12, 3.20pm AWST
Last time they met: MCG, round seven, 2018: Richmond 15.20 (110) defeated Fremantle 4.9 (33)
The Tigers maintained top spot on the ladder courtesy of a 77-point thumping, with the Dockers booting just 1.3 to the long break – the equal second-lowest opening half in club history. Nat Fyfe took the three votes in a losing side for his 33-disposal, 11-clearance effort.
What it means for Fremantle: The Dockers are right in the mix for finals a third of the way through the season but have only claimed the big scalp of Greater Western Sydney so far. Beating Richmond would help legitimise their September credentials.
What it means for Richmond: The injury-hit Tigers were flogged by the Bulldogs and victory in Perth would give them a bit of breathing space in the early-season jockeying for top eight spots.
How Fremantle wins: The Tigers were torn apart by Aaron Naughton last round and, even if David Astbury returns from an ankle injury, Fremantle has the potent tall forwards to kick a big score given enough supply.
How Richmond wins: Breaking down the Dockers' miserly defence (AFL No.2) is no mean feat and the Tigers must take the upper hand in the midfield battle and dominate field position to put Freo's backline under pressure.
The stat: The Dockers incredibly won clearances 43-23 last year against the Tigers, but were smacked 42-64 in inside 50s.
The match-up: Alex Pearce v Tom Lynch
Pearce is in All Australian form and blanketed in-form Crows skipper Taylor Walker last round. Blessed with speed, size and strength, he is the ideal match-up for Lynch, who has been labelled a "liability" by champion goalkicker Matthew Lloyd after booting only one goal in the past three rounds.
It’s a big week for: Reece Conca
Conca has been a useful addition and is averaging 20 disposals for the Dockers as a defensive midfielder and across half-back since his free agency switch from Richmond. There is no doubt he would love to celebrate a victory over his former side.
Big call: Matt Taberner to dominate the Tigers' defenders in the air and finish with a season-high four goals.
Prediction: Dockers by nine points

The odds in Mondays HUN had us $1.80 faves, Freo at $1.90.
I don't think we have a hope over there, but I also thought that about the Port game :pray

We were $3.60 against Port with a point to prove, last Saturday night we already looked tired at quarter time.
Our second tier players looked spent

Lyon warns Dockers to prepare for Tigers ‘ambush’
West Australian
9 May 2019
Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has warned his players to brace for a Richmond “ambush” as the Dockers recover from a bruising loss to Adelaide last Sunday.
Lyon revealed recruit Reece Conca had spoken about how the Tigers like to travel and how much they enjoyed coming to Perth, pointing to their stirring win against Port Adelaide as proof of how Richmond respond to adversity.
“We are expecting a really fierce clash against Richmond. They have got a really strong record here,” he said.
“We are expecting, for want of a better term, for them to try and ambush us.
“They have had their backs to the wall, they have had injuries. They have got a strong list, strong depth. They went interstate to South Australia when the world was against them and won the game convincingly.”
Lyon acknowledged that Sunday’s game was one of the toughest physically the Dockers had played in the last four years and said he instructed players to make sure they got a “gold star recovery” to prepare for the Tigers.

Barrett hoping we get smashed.
IF ... Ross The Boss doesn't go into foot-on-throat mode against the extremely vulnerable Tigers in the Sunday twilight fixture ...
THEN ... I'll be disappointed, but not at all surprised. Please don't bore us again, Ross. Time to unleash Hogan, Walters, Fyfe.
IF ... big Naughton made a mockery of a backline minus Rance and Astbury ...
THEN ... there are equal fears for what could happen this week against Jesse Hogan.

There's only one Ross the Boss outside of Manowar and The Dictators....

Butler will be the travelling emergency.

“They (the Dockers) play a really good style of game that’s going to challenge us . . . They’re very well balanced in the way they play,” Hardwick said.
“Offensively, I think they’re a lot more fluent with their ball movement . . .
“Those key forwards (Hogan and Taberner), I think they lead the league in contested marks.
“Their ground balls are strong, which is a constant with Ross Lyon-coached sides . . .
“Their set-up in front and behind the ball is very strong, and their centre bounce is another area of concern.
“Defensively, they’re very strong. I think they’re ranked in the top four for that as well.
“They’ve got (Joel) Hamling down there and (Alex) Pearce. They’re just fantastic and, in fairness, if they’re in Melbourne, they’re getting a lot more credit than what they are as compared to over in Perth.
“We’re looking to improve our ball use inside 50 because Fremantle, I think, have had the least marks taken against them inside 50.
“So it’s going to be a huge challenge for us, there’s no doubt. But there’s no better place to find out about yourself than an opposition’s home deck against a side that’s going really well.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity it presents to us to play our best footy this week.”

only one comment would have played rcd in fact would have given him games before now.
He may not be capable of running a full game out as a mid but fmd it aint rocket science we can play him in other roles with small stints in the middle.
No one mentions it but the structure is horrid. we still have not replaced rance a kpd .imo a missed opportunity to settle Balta in his best positon at chb and play with some real size.
we started the yr hoping to play two key fwds and when one gets injured we refuse to play another. Why couldnt we play moore who as it pans out is now probably out for the season himself.
we are seriously lacking big mids fmd its been a long term problem and all we do is bring in mostly small flanker types.
I just think with all the injuries we have missed some real opportunities to build some depth in some critical areas or failing that at least give others suited to the roles a go..
-
Could be a late change for Freo.
Fremantle’s Connor Blakely is on standby to be a late inclusion after being added to the list of emergencies on Friday night.
The Dockers are believed to have several sore stars in the wake of last Sunday’s bruising encounter against Adelaide and Blakely, who has not played since round 13 last season, offers insurance in the midfield.

Beautiful day on Perth.
Currently around 22 degrees

AFL live site saying no late changes.

Great start by Bolton and Bellis.
Dusty looking very keen
-
:lol
What a start
Should be five goals up after Baker disgracefully stole Bolton's hard earnt free kick at the start
-
Need a replay of Fyfe/Nank
Looked to me that Fyfe ran off. Bit hard for Nank to give him the stuffing footy when that little bitch is running with his back to him
Also shouldn't have been a free in the first place. Little girl barely got touched and dropped like he'd been shot
-
LOL @ all the morons who wanted Bolton to pack his bags last year
-
If Castagna could only kick and handpass to afl standard he’d be one of the best small farwards in the league
-
Has Nank hurt himself?
-
Has Nank hurt himself?
Radio saying it's a groin. So another key injury if true :P.
-
This is a joke
Ffs does anyone care enough to tag Fyfe?
-
Has Nank hurt himself?
Radio saying it's a groin. So another key injury if true :P.
He's back on now :shh
-
How about some consistency with free kicks
Pay them both ways :banghead
-
We are frazzled!
-
I think Broad needs to go.
-
Can we have anyone in defence fly and spoil?
-
I think Broad needs to go.
There's a bloke a little bit bigger than him down there you should take a look at first... :shh
-
I think Broad needs to go.
he kicked a much needed goal
-
I think Broad needs to go.
he kicked a much needed goal
He got moved forward because he was so bad back. That goal might be the confidence he desperately needs.
-
Defenders doing real well when one on one with their opponents but when the balls coming in to a massive pack seems like their getting lost in the shuffle/not communicating the handovers leading to easy marks.
-
This hurts to type
Bellis has done some fantastic things today .. been really good
-
If we can hang on every player deserves a medal.

27 points up at 3/4 time & I'm *rapping myself!
Somebody hold me? :pray
-
Shai Bolton has to keep playing !
-
My boys linking up melts my heart.
Bolts ya little champ. Great finish Bellis
-
Use rekn Bellis and kmac watched naish earlier today?
Thought he was a shoe in after vfl game but excellent game from both our wingers today!
-
Geeze we have some silky skilled kids with some real x-factor.
-
Use rekn Bellis and kmac watched naish earlier today?
Thought he was a shoe in after vfl game but excellent game from both our wingers today!
Was thinking to myself all Naish needed was one of Bellis/Menadue to have a poor game and he'd be a cert
-
Ellis just poo himself , 2.35 left in the game .. I knew I went too early
Lol
-
Oh Brandon. 2 hands.
Great win though.
-

Hard when he’s petrified

Ellis just poo himself , 2.35 left in the game .. I knew I went too early
Lol
Will concede that looked terrible
Still, been 95% brilliant for us today

He was superb , hence I actually praised him
But that is why I can’t cop him , it happens too often
-
I raised this last year and am going to keep running with it. We win more games in our away uniform. Loved seeing wave after wave of yellow and black guenrseys linking up
-
Half back flankers/wingers all excellent - Menadue, Bellis, Houli, Macintosh.
Shai Bolton surely rising star nomination this week.
-
Menadue looked composed today, probably his best game for us?
The silver lining with all these injuries is that we are finally getting to see our young cubs get regular games and they all look like 200 gamers right now.
-
Brilliant game from Bolton. Great win on the road but the injuries just keep mounting.
-
I hope Nank pulls up ok
-
Hoping we get a few back next week. Rioli, Vlastuin with Markov coming back today.
Naish probably gets a gig in place of Ross although the crutches looked like accessories after the game.
-

The tackle was up there with one of the best things ive seen him do
-

Agreed. Even the games we lost it wasn't the kids who lost it for us
They are playing like experienced footballers. Those development coaches of ours must be something out of the box
-

Yep. Love what the kids are bringing to the team. Can imagine Naish being given a go next week too..... :clapping

What a great result. Very good game by all players today and a special mention to the whipping boy Menadue, this is what he can and will bring to the table each week :shh humble pie anyone?

Extremely unlikely, you could bet good money those people are going through their old posts and deleting them as we speak

No it was one game. That's the best I've seen him play but it's one game
Talk to me in a few weeks and hopefully I'm eating humble pie

He was dropped after one of those games mate
stuff me dead you love Menadue more than I do BEllis :lol
Played beautifully today though did Connor
-
Best game Menadue's played.
BEllis was brilliant.
Shai Bolton, like Menadue played his best game. Most pleasing thing for me was his maturity. Made good team based decisions, team fist mentality
Tom Lynch excellent.
Just a very special win.
A very nice road trip indeed ;D
-
Positives.
Excellent win. :clapping
Bolton excellent. Pressure and tackling superb and worked his arse of and kicked four goals.
Castagna was very good. If only he had more skill he could be a star.
Garthwaite was cool as a cucumber allowed grimes and Astbury to get more involved in the game. I’d keep that trio for the rest of the year to allow for even greater synergy. I’d drop Broad.
Lynch was much better as he used his bulk and imposed himself from the beginning which was real good but I would still like to see him hassle the defence a lot more when he hasn’t got it as he still lacks presence defensively.
Caddy was good but had an extremely hard job even though he struggled to completely stop Fyfe.
B Ellis was better today as was Dusty and his defensive work much better especially early in the game. Menadue played like a 100 game veteran extremely poised.
Edwards was very good won the hard ball. Balta was very good and will develop into a star.
Stack continues to impress as does Baker.
Coaching staff did a great job especially with two down. :clapping
Negatives.
More injuries. Broad hasn’t played a decent game all year and his kicking and decision making has been terrible.
Higgins is chipping it back and sideways a lot and it’s starting to annoy me.
Clearances and forward 50 entries are still an issue that can do with a lot of improvements.

Just a gutsy win given the outs and being 2 down in the second half. Makes you proud of the boys :clapping and to be a Tiger. We've become one special football club :thumbsup.
A very nice road trip indeed ;D
WP, did you give the Freo ferals a wave goodbye as they left midway through the last? ;D
-
Bit harsh on Broad last 2 weeks been asked to play KPD which he is not and yesterday in the ruck and forward line and did well.
-

Mate he was dropped yes but he played a very good game. Don't love him as much as you love Ellis, just see AFL quality and don't have blinkers on when assessing players :whistle
-
My only negative is that we have a bad habit of letting the opposition get an opportunity for a quick reply after we kick a goal.

No need to say anything- I think George said it all with that goal of the year contender followed by the 50m bomb from the boundary. ;)
Tell us all how your love child Cerra went?
(He actually looks a lot like Georgie)
-
Matty White won goal of the year once too....what a gun he was...not... :shh
Already shared my thoughts on how Cerra is playing this year in the Bolton thread champ... :shh :shh
-
Castagna’s goal was elite.
Like I’ve said before if he only improved his skill level to afl standard we could expect to see alit more of that.

It’s a shame his drop off of form doesn’t shut you up about him though.
How many times do you think you have mentioned his name this year?
It’s a Richmond forum after all Champ.

:lol if you suggest he didn't play well and then was unfortunate to be dropped, how can I take you seriously. Menadue was very good yesterday and as a matter of fact, so was Ellis. Best game Ellis has played in my eyes for some time. Didn't shirk a contest which is a positive and provided leadership.
Looking forward to next week to see if both can back it up :shh

Yeah nice try ...the only time I mention Cerra is in relation to trade scenarios involving Bolton as both are heavily rumoured to be wanting to return home with Cerra being a Richmond supporter to boot, it's really not that hard to follow.

The only thing you know is Bolton is from WA and Cerra is from Melbourne.
-
I can confirm that 6 months ago Cerra was keen to move back and play for a big Melbourne club if the opportunity came up, and that he was a mad keen tiger growing up. Happy to disclose my source on this via PM if anyone is interested.
Speculation that Bolton has wanted to return to WA has existed since he first came to the club. The level of truth to that is unknown, but it has always been there.
Seems perfectly valid to toss up potential trade talks along these lines on any relevant thread on this forum to me.
