Match preview: Richmond v Hawthorn

May 14, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Sunday May 19, 3:20pm AEST
Last time they met: MCG, qualifying final, 2018: Richmond 13.17 (95) defeated Hawthorn 9.10 (64)
A vintage Dustin Martin performance led Richmond to a comprehensive qualifying final win in soggy conditions. Kamydn McIntosh surprised to kick three, as did Jarryd Roughead, while midfield duo Jaegar O'Meara and Tom Mitchell starred for the Hawks.
What it means for Richmond: A chance to continue blooding kids while banking wins. The injury-hit Tigers have had their speedbumps this year, but have been boosted by the performance of their young players.
What it means for Hawthorn: The first time the club will have two consecutive wins for the season, and an opportunity to go ahead in the win-loss ledger for the first time since round three.
How Richmond wins: Pure manic run and pressure. Richmond will relish returning to the MCG and its small forward brigade is starting to work well with tall recruit Tom Lynch.
How Hawthorn wins: Exploiting Richmond's hole in the ruck. With Toby Nankervis set to miss due to a groin injury, Ben McEvoy and Jonathon Ceglar are well-placed to take advantage of the inexperienced Ivan Soldo.
The stat: Richmond and Hawthorn have played each other 158 times. Over that time, the Tigers average 91 points in those matches, while the Hawks average 90.
The match-up: Tom Lynch v James Frawley
Frawley turned back the clock with a vintage performance on the competition's leading goalkicker Jeremy Cameron, holding him goalless. The Tigers' one key forward, Lynch, is building match fitness and is crucial in bringing the ball down for the smalls.
It's a big week for: Dustin Martin
After a quiet few weeks by his lofty standards, Martin is beginning to show some of his best. He's struggled without the hamstrung Trent Cotchin, but against Fremantle was crashing packs and tackling hard, finishing the match with a trademark goal.
Big call: With boosted confidence after a breakout game, Shai Bolton will follow up with another four-goal haul.
Prediction: Tigers by 17 points

RICHMOND v HAWTHORN (TY VICKERY CUP)
Tigers’ burning question: Can Ivan Soldo fill the mega hole left by Toby Nankervis?
Heading into Round 8, Richmond had already lost a crucial player in every part of the ground with Alex Rance (defender), Trent Cotchin (midfielder) and Jack Riewoldt (forward) all missing in action, along with a host of other best 22 players. But the two-month injury suffered to Toby Nankervis against the Dockers leaves a giant hole at the centre bounces, with cult-hero — and Ivan Maric’s cousin — Ivan Soldo set to fill the void. The 23-year-old made his debut in 2017, where he played a number of games alongside Nankervis. But he will be on his own for at least the next six weeks, with Soldo having averaged 22.8 hit-outs in his eight career games. What it means for the Richmond midfielders remains to be seen, as losing crucial clearance battles could put further pressure on the undermanned defensive unit.
Hawks’ burning question: Will the Hawks attempt to bore the Tigers?
The Hawks pulled off a shock win in Round 8, which led Wayne Carey to call their style of football “boring”, before club great Ben Dixon lauded Alastair Clarkson’s tactics in their win over GWS on the Fox Footy Podcast. But will the Hawks play a possession game against the Tigers? Collingwood showed early in the season how important keeping hold of the ball can be against the pressuring Tigers, clunking 174 marks. While the Hawks’ 136 marks on Sunday is somewhat below that, Richmond hasn’t taken more than 120 marks in a game this season. It might just be the formula to success if Hawthorn is to defeat Damien Hardwick’s men at the MCG.
Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Richmond 8 — Hawthorn 3

The Hawthorn players might be a little overawed playing in front of such a large crowd
-
"We're not looking at Nankervis being out of their side and thinking 'Oh, gee, we're going to get a huge advantage in the ruck' – it is going to be a significant contest," Clarkson said.
"We've won hitouts and that sort of stuff on a regular basis throughout the course of the year and that doesn't correspond with us necessarily winning the game of footy.
"We're going in there looking at it that it's going to be a fight no matter what the opposition is, whether that's their midfield underneath or their rucks that give them supply.
"As we saw last week, who'd have thought with Nankervis going out of the game that (Noah) Balta and (Nathan) Broad were going to do so well in the second half of the game … we've got to be prepared for anything."

You know I’m an anti when it comes to umpire bashing
You have been far quieter than normal and I reckon this is as bad as I’ve seen!

I rarely criticise umpires
But Gorman (no. 10) is the worst ump I've seen this year
Disgraceful and pathetic
-
Honestly 2 free kicks for a half of footy has to be an all time record surely.....
We are getting shafted here.
Dusty amazing!

I must be now resigned to the fact that we get screwed by the umps. No doubt if we were wearing black and white stripes the free kick count would be the other way around ::). As WP said, Ump #10 has no idea :facepalm.
I also think we are making as many dumb mistakes as the umps. We are still wasting too many of our F50 entries via poor disposal or decision making especially when teammates are open. If we were playing a top side they would've punished us on the scoreboard.
-
Dusty 13 contested possies in a half :o. He's backkkkkkkkkkk!
-
When does the little league finish?
42 - 32
-
This is like how we started the game. Half asleep and butchering the ball.

As for the umps ::).

Caddy :gotigers
Hopefully that wakes us up again.

-
Great win today
-
A good tough win, but we are bloody lucky they didn't take their opportunities early.
-
Right now it is all about just ticking off as many wins as we can until our stars return hopefully in the second half of season. Having said that we were fortunate we were playing an ordinary side like Hawthorn. There were too many missed open targets and wasted F50 entries by us today that a top side would punish us for on the scoreboard. At times we just get too cute with the ball and needlessly turn it over when the boring obvious high percentage play is the much better option. At other times we aimlessly bomb it inside 50 when lowering the eyes is the better option. Happy with the win but still a lot of work to do in fixing these dumb disposals.
-
Guess that experienced replacement for ross in the midfield ended up being vlastuin. Thought he had a great game - 24 disposals 9 tackles and a goal.
Small forwards were quiet but thought out midfield both inside and outside as well as the ruckman were great.
-
BEllis very good again :clapping
Well done young man
-
Vlastuin in the middle is a great idea I think something many of us have wanted to see more of for some time now. He’d even do well up forward as we’ve seen already.
I thought he was solid in the middle and i hope we see him there a lot more in the future.
-
Unfortunately we need him down back. Garthwaite needs a lot of work and Astbury whilst better today u snt the same player without Rance next to him.
-
If I recall correctly didn’t Vlastuin captain vic metro from the midfield?
-

Yes was drafted as a midfielder. Has become a gun defender.
-

I thought Garthwaite was ok today. He was only beaten when the kick came in beautifully weighted to his opponent giving him little chance to spoil.

Wait, what??
Hawthorn fielded seven players aged 21 or younger, in Harry Morrison, James Worpel, Lewis, Conor Glass – a late inclusion for James Frawley (hamstring) – Jack Scrimshaw, Dylan Moore and James Cousins.
None of them have played 30 AFL games.
"We need to just keep chipping away and working at it," Clarkson said.
"This group for the Tiges have been going at it for a fair while now. (They have) a lot of players who are pretty experienced playing with each other and some of our young blokes need to get games into them.
"I had six or eight young fellas today who are still trying to master their craft and it's great exposure for them – MCG, big crowd, good opponent and they did some valuable things for us today.
We had 9 players under 50 games, compared to 7.
-
Not to mention 3 of our KPP has a combined total of about 15 games in Balta, Garthwaite and Soldo, Balta and Garthwaite are under 21)
-
... the difference in the contest was in one sense as much about style as personnel.
Richmond won the contest of getting the game played the way they wanted it. Hawthorn had the better of that early on but Richmond stuck to their high-energy game of surging the ball forward and running in numbers.
Hawthorn’s style is like a sewing game (pick a hole, thread the needle and stitch it together). It’s effective if they are allowed to take repeated uncontested marks which they were able to do early on and move the ball by stealth forward. They took Richmond’s game away from them when they weren’t in possession of the ball by pushing up at Richmond hard on the mark and holding them from playing on.
But in the end they couldn't outlast Richmond as the weight of pressure shifted. Yes, Hawthorn lost Ben McEvoy and Mitch Lewis to injury (McEvoy came back on but was not the same), but it was about the pressure on the ball that Hawthorn was unable to resist.
For Richmond this was another critical victory, because it's all about banking wins through this period when they have so many injuries. It creates the hope that they keep themselves in contention to strike when Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin and Toby Nankervis come back. In the meantime the most heartening thing was Dusty once more playing like a tiger of old.
