Garry Lyon was on Foxsports last night apparently criticising Stack for this.

Eddie Betts shares laugh with Sydney Stack after kicking brilliant snap goal against Richmond
Tim Michell,
Herald Sun
June 14, 2019
Eddie Betts has revealed what he said to Richmond young gun Sydney Stack as they shared a high-five after his stunning last quarter snap on Thursday night.
The mercurial Adelaide small forward produced a moment of sheer brilliance from the ‘Eddie Betts pocket’, gathering possession before sprinting away from Tigers defender Nathan Broad and snapping truly to put the Crows 35 points ahead.
He was mobbed by teammates Rory Sloane and Josh Jenkins before spotting Stack, who was one of Richmond’s best in a 33-point defeat.
Betts pointed at Stack before they high-fived, the young Tiger grinning broadly as he appreciated Betts’ goal.
Betts explained the exchange post-match.
“Stack is a great young player but he keeps pushing you,” he said on 3AW.
“Sydney kept saying all game ‘no special goals tonight brother’.
“When I got it I said to him ‘told ya brother’.”

Lyon's right - there's a time and a place and during the game ain't either.... :thumbsdown
-
Lyon is an ignorant man
He doesn't understand this generation isn't like the one he played against
-
The whole thing needs to be put into context.
Did anyone see Betts interview after the game?
He said Stack has been sledging him the whole game that he won’t kick a goal, Betts then pulls one out of his arss late in the game, initiates the contact with Stack who basically said you got me well done.
Absolutely nothing but good sportsmanship in it.

This. Media making something out of nothing yet again....

You don't high five and hug an opponent straight after they kick a goal regardless of what genertion you are or what was said in the lead up - it's not AFLX or the stuffing Ted Whitten Legends game .... :thumbsdown

Why not? If you are Stack and you have no fear and throw your body into contests, what does it mean if you show true sportsmanship and congratulate your opponent? As long as he goes in hard at the next contest it means SFA.

Cannot believe people are in flap over this.
The game was done, over.
Thought it was great.
A champion being acknowledge by the newbie who could end up being a champion. It was about respect
What would people prefer? Stack cracking it and going up snotting Betts and getting 6 weeks?
Times have changed.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has backed young gun Sydney Stack for celebrating Eddie Betts’ miraculous goal in Adelaide’s win over the Tigers on Thursday night.
Debate has erupted in footy circles since Stack and Betts high-fived and hugged after the stunning goal in the final term.
Hardwick admitted he didn’t see the exchange live as he was watching the game from the interchange bench but when told of the banter he was supportive of the 19-year-old.
"Good goals are good goals. We like to celebrate don’t we?" he said.
A tongue-in-cheek Hardwick then said: "They’re not throwing Sydney out of the stadium for that are they? For celebrating (with) the opposition. That’s allowed?
"Just in case the AFL doesn’t want us congratulating the other players. Just saying, just be careful.
"It’s good."
Melbourne champion Garry Lyon wasn’t a fan.
"I’m not condemning Sydney Stack, he’s a young kid. Philosophically, I don’t like that and I don’t apologise for that," he said on SEN.
"It’s a great debate. It’s modern-day footy versus old-school thoughts."

Agree WP.
I liked it. Stack isn’t backwards in his intent and looks like he gives a bit of verbal as well but can back it up with his fierce aggression at the ball.
In the end of the game he acknowledged a great of the game and was even able to sledge him during the game, which we saw with that excellent smother only minutes earlier.
In context it was actually an act of great respect for a champ of the game that was able to pull out another one of his miracle goals.

Ok.
Why is the alternative "snotting" Betts? Why couldn't he have a dirty look on his face as if to say "gee I'm peeed off he got that one".
Let's say Brandon Ellis was brilliantly run down by Betts in the defensive 50. Betts takes the free and kicks the goal.
What the stuff sort of reception do you think BElly or one of the other whipping boys would get if they decided to do the bro shake, give Betts a hug while having a poo eating grin on their face DESPITE by down by 5 goals.........?

Recall at least one poster praising Stack in this thread also getting stuck into Cotchin and others for having a laugh with opposition players after a loss.... :shh :shh

You and Gary Lyon the only two on the planet that share this opinion.
That tells you something

So when a young tennis player applauds Roger Federer for passing him with a brilliant shot, do you think that’s bad too?
-
Terrible analogy :shh
-
Terrible analogy :shh
why?
-
Imagine thinking this a big deal/disappointing.
Get some perspective, just respect from one player to another. Anyone that’s played footy at any level knows that’s the sort of thing that goes on.
20 months ago we broke their club. Let the baby have his bottle.
Oh, and here’s a hint. If your thoughts align with Gary Lyons you probably need to have a rethink....
-
Terrible analogy :shh
why?
Different sports, different cultures. Individual sport too. You often see signs of respect like applause in tennis.
Football is different, always has been.
It's not a massive deal in the grand scheme of things but it's not a good look to be bro shaking and hugging opposition players when you're getting flogged.
Other players would not be afforded the same generous reaction Stack is getting :shh
-
Spurious analogy... tennis isn't footy , that young player doesn't have a bunch of team mates putting their bodies on the line in a contact sport and is only representing himself,... :shh
EDIT:AT beat me to it. :shh :shh

Nah mate, it honestly doesn't happen too often. After the game, yes... :shh
During? No, you literally don't see blokes giving each other high fives and hugging. A shared laugh and pat on the back or hand up off the deck, sure. Happens every week.
You won't see Stack do this again this year.... :shh :shh

Ok.

Never said it was the only alternative, just giving an example of an alternative

First up, BEllis wouldn't do it ... he'd either still be on the ground or walking back to his position head bowed
And I'd be saying "no surprise, Eddie's too good for you BEllis" :lol

I loved it and thought it was fantastic.
Each to their own but I generally feel sorry for you if you have a problem with that.
Stack is a star and what he did was just good sportsmanship. If you want to give some lip you have got to be big enough to give credit after a goal like that.

Exactly. Great character. Reminds me of why we love footy.
-
He look like he was busting his gut to me.
Cornes said iho he would be pick 3 if you received did the drafts,.
If he keeps stepping up I don't have a problem.
-
If Stacky high fives a brother when they do something brilliant but continues to play good, hard solid footy then I am ok with that.
-
In the meantime, let’s celebrate with Betts and Stack. Possibly, what mattered most was not their across-the-trenches clasp, but that they felt free to do it. At some level, the instinct always was there, but suppressed. Carlton favourite Ang Christou grew up idolising Collingwood great Peter Daicos. In 1992, they shared a ground at last. When Daicos at one end kicked one of his miracle goals, Christou at the other looked around, saw no-one was watching, and discreetly clenched a celebratory fist.
Christou played 10 more whole-hearted years for Carlton, and won a premiership, and no-one ever thought him in the least bit soft.

Tom Elliott says Sydney Stack made a blue by “celebrating” with Eddie Betts after the Adelaide star kicked a goal of the year contender on Thursday night.
He says it was a bad look, given the game had not finished.
“Sydney Stack should have waited until the game was over,” the 3AW Drive host said.
“His timing was terrible.
“Four minutes later? Absolutely, shake your opponent’s hand and say well done, great goal, see you next time.
“While the game is still on? No way.”
He spoke with Jimmy Bartel about the matter.
The 3AW Football expert said the football world “took itself a little too seriously” sometimes and he had no problem with it.

And from the Syd himself:
--------------------------------------
But after flying home to WA for the bye week, Stack told 7 News he was just “amazed” by Betts’ goal, as he is one of his favourite players.
“Always give sportsmanship to the opposition. You’ve gotta respect them, and I respect Eddie a lot,” Stack said.
“The game was pretty much already over. Eddie’s one of my favourites - I’d shake his hand any day. I’m still in disbelief that I’m playing among legends like Eddie.
“He’s one of my favourite players. It was just a special moment to play on him, I guess, and when he kicked that goal I was just amazed.”
Stack also revealed what he was telling Betts earlier in the quarter when he smothered a shot on goal by the Crows forward.
“I was just getting stuck into Eddie, just playing my role I guess, being physical,” he said.
“I smothered the footy and then I asked him, ‘where’s your pocket, show me your pocket!’”

Stack also said in the interview that Betts keeps in touch to encourage him.
