Your club's contract calls: Who's out, latest whispers, priority deals
Dinny Navaratnam
afl.com.au
19 June 2019
RICHMOND
Free agents: Brandon Ellis (restricted), David Astbury, Shane Edwards, Bachar Houli (unrestricted)
Whispers: The unrestricted free agents are all integral parts of the team. Richmond will be determined to ensure they stay. If everything keeps going well for Sydney Stack, he is expected to ink a contract to remain at Punt Road. There shouldn't be any hiccups with Patrick Naish, who has slotted in well to the senior line-up over the past fortnight. His management will meet with the Tigers over the next few weeks, and it's anticipated a deal will be done. Premiership forward Dan Butler has spent time in the VFL, which would reduce his bargaining power.
Re-signing priority: After Ellis' spot in the side was up in the air to start the season, he has established himself with an excellent run of form. It's likely to see him have plenty of suitors. He doesn't turn 26 until August and has been durable, so could slot in across half-back or on a wing elsewhere if club and player can't reach an agreement.

Excellent run of form until he stunk it up the past couple of games and should be banished to vfl for the rest of the year

Lamington, he is our best player, would hate to see him go but if some sucker wants anther club wants to chase him what can we do except ask for a top draft pick

Contracts List:
2019: Astbury, Bolton, Butler, Coleman-Jones, Edwards, B.Ellis, Garthwaite, Grigg, Houli, Lambert, McIntosh, Menadue, Miller, Moore, Naish, Soldo
Rookies:
Liam Baker - second year in 2019.
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith - second year in 2019.
Maverick Weller - first year in 2019.
Jacob Townsend - first year in 2019.
Mabior Chol - fourth year in 2019.
Jake Aarts - first year in 2019.
Sydney Stack - first year in 2019.
Grigg has already retired.
You would reckon Townsend and Menadue's papers are stamped after being dropped from the seniors once again.
Likewise, hard seeing Weller & Aarts being at Punt Rd next year if they're not getting a game despite our injury toll.
Butler, Ellis and possibly Bolton will be trade bait.
Chol is still a question mark. A big couple of weeks coming up for him in the seniors. His best is a very promising/exciting agile ruck/KP; his worst is lazy, soft and instant delisting material.
Baker & Stack will be on our seniors list next year.
So we're looking at 7-8 out at the end of the season. Hopefully, it frees up some cap space too.

That list is incorrect,
CJ signed for 2 years on 18/12/18 so out of contract 2021& Garthy signed for 1 year on the same day so out end of 2020

You gotta wonder why Weller didn't get a game given our outs. He must be a dud.

The Tigers are also working on a new deal for exciting mid-forward Liam Baker, while free agent Shane Edwards will also remain with the club into next year.

Dan Butler - Richmond
The 2017 premiership small forward has found himself as a fringe player this season with six matches in the AFL and five in the VFL. Dialogue for a new deal beyond this season has hardly reached great heights. Will be one to watch over a potential move should he remain going in and out of the side.

Trade HQ: How much does Ellis want to stay?
Brendon Goddard,
Herald Sun
9 July 2019
This year will go down as an absolute rollercoaster for Richmond.
And that comes after doing everything right in the off-season.
By adding Tom Lynch to their forward line, they secured the best player on the market and dropped him into a side that had won 18 games the year before.
But no one could have predicted that almost every key Tiger would miss extended time with injuries throughout the year.
It makes judging their list a tricky process. While some areas of need have clearly been shown up, it’s unlikely their depth will be tested so severely two years in a row.
Plus, it is certainly impressive that even with everything that has gone wrong, they are still in the top four mix. If they can stay healthy for the rest of the year, I’m confident they can go on another finals run.
One area of concern that I don’t think is going away is the second ruck slot.
With Shaun Grigg retiring, his partnership with Toby Nankervis is over. Ivan Soldo has been tried in the ruck and while he might get to that level eventually, I think he is a little bit undersized when it comes to going up against the monsters of the competition.
At 25, Nankervis is still in his prime so it isn’t like Richmond should be going out and trying to secure a star like Todd Goldstein.
I think it is more a case of being shrewd. Try to get a quality back-up at a good price, who can step up and play the No. 1 ruck role if called upon.
After their big Lynch signing, it is unlikely they would be a major player during the trade period again. However, I’ll be interested to see what happens with Brandon Ellis.
Two months ago I would have said he was more than likely gone after looking down on confidence.
But he and Damien Hardwick appear to be back on the same page and I think he is an important player for the Tigers to try and keep. While he isn’t a superstar, this year has proved, you can never have too much depth.
JON RALPH BREAKS DOWN RICHMOND’S BIGGEST TRADE QUESTIONS
THREE TIGERS RIVAL RECRUITERS ARE WATCHING
Brandon Ellis
Ellis put off contract talks early in the year and will likely assess rival offers from clubs needing pace. He has used the ball well this year and despite being dropped last year, has enough traits that rivals will be able to offer more opportunity that the Tigers. Then it comes down to how much he wants to stay.
Callum Moore
Played six games in 2018 as a tall leading forward but has battled an ankle injury this year. With Jack Riewoldt still likely to play on for some time and Tom Lynch on a long-term deal, would a rival try to poach him for a later pick?
Shai Bolton
Is just becoming the player Richmond hoped and signed on last year despite rival interest because he “loved the club”. No reason to think he won’t get opportunities but would Adelaide come hard at him given Eddie Betts is closer to the end of his career?

Has BJ been back to the medicine cupboard at Windy Hill? At 204cm, he is saying Soldo is undersized?
-
apparently down the line Dave has re-signed for 2 years
-
BJ raises a good point though. The way the game currently is being played, you only really need one full time ruckman in your 22, but you need a competitive one. Playing two in the same team seems to be a hindrance. And being that the position itself is one of the most volatile, teams in all likelyhood need a back-up ruckman who's basically as competent and competitive as your first stringer. Something of a conundrum.
And then, the Dees looked to sure up their rucking situation by taking Pruess from North, and really that has been a bit of a wasted move. Tricky one.
apparently down the line Dave has re-signed for 2 years

So that leaves ...
Out of contract end of 2019: Bolton, Butler, Edwards, B.Ellis, Grigg, Houli, Menadue, Miller, Moore, Naish, Soldo
Rookies:
Liam Baker - second year in 2019.
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith - second year in 2019.

Shai Bolton

Don't see why they would go for Shai Bolton given they grabbed Stengle to replace Eddie lol
At least he didn't cost what Gibbs did.
I wonder if Stengle regrets moving home?
-
So that leaves ...
Maverick Weller - first year in 2019.
Jacob Townsend - first year in 2019.
Mabior Chol - fourth year in 2019.
Jake Aarts - first year in 2019.
Sydney Stack - first year in 2019.
Out of that lot I would only keep
Bolton, Edwards, Naish, Baker, Egg, Townsend, Chol and Stack.
I just hope we are brave enough to make some big calls on a few- Bellis, Houli and Soldo.
-
Townsend will get the arse....Moore's injury might see him cut some slack , club obviously rated him highly enough to give him a senior spot when they could've just delisted & re-rookied him like they did Chol.....needs to be played primarliy as a defender if he remains, can't see a place for him just as a forward....Miller (presuming he's even still at club as he hasn't played since he stunk agaist North but hasn't been named in the list of injuries) hasn't exactly set the world on fire so far but his versatility and good pace for his size might save him ...all depends what our plans are regarding our KPD stocks... :shh

Despite some injury hiccups earlier this year, Richmond is still in the premiership window and is unlikely to be looking to move on any of its senior players. Alex Rance also just falls out of this window; he will turn 30 in October.
Shane Edwards
Still in strong form and his versatility has been very important to the Tigers this year. Also showed strong leadership by captaining the club for several weeks. STAY
Shaun Grigg
Retired in May with a knee injury, allowing Richmond to take a pick into the mid-season draft. GO
Bachar Houli
Out of contract at the end of the season but is hoping to sign a new deal in the coming months. Has been in sparkling touch off half-back. STAY
Jack Riewoldt
Has had the worst injury run of his career this year but is still a vital part of the Tigers' line up for the next few years. STAY

What are they worth?

25 July 2019
BRANDON ELLIS (RICHMOND)
Draft picks: Second-round pick (compensation)
Value on open market: $500,000-600,000 per season
Luke Dahlhaus' $2 million deal over four years should be used as the guide. If Ellis can edge over $500,000 a season and add a fifth year, the Tigers could get lucky and land an end of first-round selection.
DAN BUTLER (RICHMOND)
Draft picks: Late second-round/early third-round pick
Value on open market: $300,000-400,000 per season
Premiership player who has consistently been overlooked this year. Might be a suitor out there willing to pay him over the average AFL wage to fill a small forward role.
SHAI BOLTON (RICHMOND)
Draft picks: Mid second-round pick
Value on open market: $400,000-500,000 per season
Hitting form at the right time as he nears the end of his one-year extension. Has explosive pace and shown he can finish in the front half. The 20-year-old West Australian could be a premiership player by season's end.

Is Shai really worth 500k a year off the back of 4 or 5 solid performances.
Not saying I don’t think he’s a gun and will be, but that seems very high considering where he’s at right now.

So we pick up Shai with a mid second round pick develop him for three seasons, he is showing the form that we had hoped for and Sarah black suggests that we then trade him for the same pick that we got him for????????????????????????
Shai would be worth a mid first rounder or we keep him on a better $$$ for two years.( I prefer keep him )
-
Iif Treloar was worth two first rounders then Bolton with his skills & extra pace is easily worth at least one... :shh
Could get overs for Butler.....pace is in demand(could also probably get overs for Menadud for that reason alone) and he has a premiership medal to go with it... still young as well...:shh :shh

If Bellis is worth $500k then Bolton is worth a mil.
Sometimes you pay on potential rather than current output especially if it’s a long term deal.
If he signs a 5 year contract on $500k and by the second or third year he has become one of our best players, we are getting a bargain for his remaining few years of his contract.
Pay him what it takes i say.
-
I would take end of first for Ellis.
Minimum early 2nd for Bolton, kid has shown plenty!
Butler mid-late 2nd.
Should consider trading Graham also.
Delist or trade:
Moore
Garthwaite
Menadue
Markov
Townsend
Weller
Need to trade in another KPD, and some bid bodied mids. Develop Ross and Miller.
Balta to play wing or midfield, Nank ruck, Chol stuff. CCJ develop.
-
I would be peeed off if we turfed Bolton now for sfa and livid to lose Graham. I reckon Butler has struggled since his injury but he was better than Castanza before it so he just may need some time to get back to his best. Graham had a shoulder as well which is a bitch to come back from, niggley bastards.
-
Graham should be developed as a run with player. I also consider him to be a long term Richmond player.
Stack and Bolton should have been signed by now. They are both 200 game Richmond players.
-
Bolton and Stack have more upside than Graham. I think Graham has peaked. Stack > Bolton > Graham as priority. Prepared to let Graham go for something worthwhile...

I wouldn't think any of those three are going anywhere.... :shh

If he went back to WA I'd be very worried that he could go off the rails again and become a has-been.

Who’s playing for their career at your club?
Al Paton,
Herald Sun
1 Aug 2019
With four rounds of the home-and-away season remaining, some players are tuning up for finals and others are thinking of next year.
And dozens remain in limbo as they wait to find out if they will have a contract for 2020.
As list managers start to thrash out their priorities ahead of the draft and trade period, here’s a selection of players fighting for their careers over the next month.
RICHMOND
Callum Moore
Connor Menadue
Jacob Townsend
Mav Weller
Jake Aarts
The Tigers offloaded a series of fringe players last season — and most have been at least serviceable at their new homes (Sam Lloyd, Reece Conca, Anthony Miles et al). Connor Menadue survived the chop but could be on borrowed time after failing to cement a spot in the best 22. Callum Moore showed exciting signs last year but seems to have been overtaken by Mabior Chol (a serious ankle injury hasn’t helped), Mav Weller played the first two games but hasn’t seen senior action since, mature-age draftee Jake Aarts hasn’t played a senior game. Then there’s premiership hero Jacob Townsend, who earned a last-minute lifeline last year via the rookie draft. He has played just one game this year (for three disposals against Geelong) but is regularly in the best in the VFL. A late-season promotion has worked before ...

WILL RIVALS PICK OFF FRINGE TIGERS?
GEELONG’S VFL team was once fertile territory for rival sides to poach second-tier players given their three premiership dynasty.
Richmond’s depth players were picked off last year — Sam Lloyd, Anthony Miles, Reece Conca, Corey Ellis — and there is no reason it won’t happen again this year.
In the VFL side last week there were 11 players who have tasted AFL action this year — Kamdyn McIntosh, Ryan Garthwaite, Toby Nankervis, Jack Ross, Noah Balta, Oleg Markov, Patrick Naish, Mav Weller, Connor Menadue, Callum Coleman-Jones, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith.
Most are contracted and happy, with Nankervis and Ross returning from injury, but will rivals come hard at centre half back Garthwaite or second ruck Coleman-Jones?

Who has already called time?
Just the one retirement for the Tigers so far, with Shaun Grigg finishing up in May with a persistent knee injury. His exit allowed Richmond to sign Marlion Pickett in the mid-season draft.
Is it time for goodbye?
It's been a frustrating season for the out-of-contract Dan Butler, playing seven AFL games spread across three different blocks of the year. Having kicked 53 goals from his 45 matches, he could be a useful addition to another side who can offer more playing time.
Brandon Ellis is a restricted free agent who, despite having re-established himself in the side, has hit pause on contract talks.
Fellow premiership player Jacob Townsend was re-listed as a rookie at the end of last year, and despite some strong VFL form, has played just one AFL game.
With a young list, Richmond is unlikely to have any more retirements.

If Houli’s roll is to not defend basically at all, and take the kick ins and kick it down the line, yes he is doing a great job.
A job just about everyone in footy would want.
If he didn’t play next year no body would mention his name. He would be just another Conca.
As for Garthwaite I have seen enough to know he is just a very average player. Only my opinion but I stand by it. And I guess only time will tell.
-
Dunno mate I think houli's value is a little more than infield
I think he is a key driver in our clubs culture
He has his flaws but I think he has been a valuable contributor to our clubs success
Nearly won a norm smith. Some say he should have
-
Like I've said previously - I can live with and am happy with Houli's role and relatively non-existent contested ball. The problem is when you have Short on the other stuff as well. Happy for short to replace Houli after retirement but having them both in the back six is dangerous.
Steve Morris was a great shutdown small for a while, almost AA IMO. Game went past him but it was great knowing he would basically completely negate any small forward. He just couldn't do much else unfortunately.
Need a small defender with a bit more balance. We're very lucky to have Grimes, Broad and Floss who can play small and are contested animals....

RICHMOND
Out of contract: Jake Aarts, Shai Bolton, Dan Butler, Mabior Chol, Shane Edwards, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, Brandon Ellis, Bachar Houli, Connor Menadue, Callum Moore, Patrick Naish, Ivan Soldo, Jacob Townsend, Maverick Weller
Mid-season draftee Marlion Pickett has signed a one-year contract extension as he tries to force his way into the Tigers' line-up for the finals. Edwards and Houli will continue barring a shock, but there is interest in what Bolton, Butler and in-demand free agent Ellis do. Butler's been starved of opportunity, while the other two also have interest elsewhere but have been senior regulars this year. Chol is carving out a niche for himself in the senior team in his third season on the list, and Aarts is likely to be retained as a rookie. Eggmolesse-Smith, Menadue, Moore, Naish and Soldo will have varying confidence of staying on, but Townsend and Weller may be up against it.

Our list management team have done a great job this year. Edwards isn’t going anywhere and there are a few of the above you’d still hope to retain but nothing you would be losing any sleep over.
-
wouldnt miss any of the following and all have been around for long enough.
Grigg retired
Ellis
Aarts
Butler
Weller
Menadue
Markov
Short
McIntosh
Townsend
Moore
A few of the juniors look to be struggling as well
-
Ellis (free agent -> Gold Coast or Essendon): gain compo pick in return (late 1st round/early 2nd).
Butler (trade -> Carlton): gain pick 39.
None of the others out of contract would have trade value. At best a late pick (4th rounder) for Menadue. Effectively delist Menadue and rookies Townsend, Moore, Weller & Aarts..
Keep Eggy and Miller.
That would leave us with 5 picks in the top 40 of the draft: 18, 19, 36, 37, 39.
I'm guessing we'll use a late pick on Maurice Junior as a F/S. I haven't heard any others clubs willing to use an early pick to bid for him (?).
-
I thought Maurice Jnr is not up in this year's draft
He eligible in 2020??
-
So far in 2 years Miller has shown absolutely nothing in the VFL to suggest he has a future at this level. Could be seen as harsh but I would move him on at the end of the year. Has the size to play key position but refuses to play like a 195cm player. Next :shh

I thought Maurice One is not up in this year's draft
He eligible in 2020??
Doh! You're right, WP. I'll edit my post.

Thats a good draft haul.

A bonus if we can bundle some of those picks and push up higher in the draft to clubs who need more the draft points than draft position for their Academy players.

AFL Trade Radio gets underway on Monday, bringing with it three weeks of rampant speculation and hype.
Gerard Whateley and Sam McClure have laid out the landscape for all 18 teams heading into the trade period.
Richmond
Sam McClure: “Who replaces Brandon Ellis?”
Whateley: “Trade high. Trade the fringe players high. There’s cache in premiership players 16-22. Trade high. You get way more.”
