The match against West Coast will serve as the first part of a vital late-season dress rehearsal for the finals for Richmond as they face another top-four side in the Brisbane Lions the week after.
Both games will go a long way to determining the make-up of the top four and Hardwick was excited by the prospect of facing two of the best teams in the competition immediately before September.
“It’s always good to play sides in really good form at the top end of the ladder, you get a really good look at them and get an understanding of what they do,” Hardwick said.
“We’ve set ourselves for them and we’ve just got to make sure we continue to concentrate on what we can do and play our best football.”

West Coast coach Adam Simpson said his team had emerged injury-free ahead of the blockbuster with Richmond, who have won seven games in a row.
“It’s an exciting round. I can’t wait. I think everyone involved in AFL can’t wait for next week,” Simpson said.
“It’s probably the biggest test in the AFL – Richmond at the MCG.”

I think we should go to pretty close to all guns blazing on this one. A loss here could give them a psychological edge if we meet again on GF day
-
stuff me $2.40 for the Weagles is decent odds given our 2nd half yesterday

Weather forecast is for 17 degrees and no rain at this stage. You would think we would get 60K there for the game of the year.

Another side we rarely play at the 'G. This will be just the 4th time in the past 11 years.
Played 12 times since 2008 (11 years):
MCG 2W 1L
Docklands 1W 1L
Subiaco 3W 3L
Optus 0W 1L

The past two premiers, who hold favouritism for this year’s flag, have played each other only once per season during the past decade.
The third-placed West Coast Eagles won their most recent clash between the two sides at Optus Stadium last May by 47 points.
Richmond, who celebrated Shane Edwards’ 250th game in style yesterday, were 11-point victors at the MCG in April, 2017.
West Coast’s Elliot Yeo said yesterday: “There is no bigger challenge, especially at the G. We are going to have our work cut out for us … but it is going to be a really good game.”

Not too worried re: our Carlton performance with WCE coming up.
Team clearly went through the motions. Will be a different attitude next week I'm sure. Looking forward to it!

The Eagles are trying to play the underdog tag.
-----------------------------------
West Coast livewire Willie Rioli believes Richmond deserve the favourites tag heading into Sunday’s high-stakes clash at the MCG.
“They’re definitely the favourites going into this week and we look forward to the challenge,” Rioli said.
“Richmond are playing an exciting brand of footy and, like us, they’re getting players back at the right time.
“Probably their on-ballers (make them so good), they’ve got guys like Dusty Martin and Trent Cotchin, and they’ve got dangerous small forwards as well so it’s definitely something our backs will look forward to and our mids as well.”
Rioli will face up against cousin Daniel Rioli for the first time in his 35-game AFL career, but was quick to play it down.
“I look forward to it, it’s the first time I get to play against him at the top level,” Rioli said.
“It’s exciting, I don’t want to build it up too much because he might get ahead of himself so we’ll try and keep it down.
“I haven’t (spoke with him) yet, I’ll probably get onto it sometime this week but I’ll most likely catch up with him in Melbourne beforehand.

David King breaks down key factor in Tigers versus Eagles clash
By SEN
12 Aug 2019
Richmond and West Coast meet this weekend in a battle between fourth and third and David King is fascinated by what the Tigers will do with Jeremy McGovern.
The Eagles defender is once again in All-Australian form and King wonders whether the Tigers might try something out of the box to quell his influence.
“What will Richmond do with Jeremy McGovern?” King asked on SEN’s Whateley.
“In the last five weeks, he’s the number one intercepts to score player in the competition. He’s won it back 46 times and from those 46 occasions, seven goals five.
“It’s a massive ratio. Every four times he intercepts, often deep in defensive 50, they score.
“I think it’s time for someone to look at flat out tagging McGovern. Do not try and lead on him. Do not try and outsmart him or out-read him. I don’t care who he’s trying to pick up. If he wants to stand in the dominant position, you stand next to him.
“I wonder whether Damien (Hardwick) would have a look at that. When you see what he did in the Grand Final and across the last three years, you can’t just keep going the same way. It hasn’t worked.
“Richmond don’t necessarily need to do that. They’ll probably just say we’ll back our system. We don’t need to look at this.
“Can you afford to have a look at something in Round 22? Even if it fails you say ah well, not a problem, see you in three weeks. I just wonder whether they could have that conversation.
“Everyone is talking about Richmond. No one is talking about West Coast. Not in the same way. They’ve been in raptures about the way Richmond has corrected since the bye.”
The Eagles defeated the Tigers at Optus Stadium by 47 points when they last met in Round 9 of last year.

The times when West Coast has been beaten, the key was to lower the eyes and have low flat kicks to lead up forwards. The hail mary kicks into F50 usually allowed him to cut it off. That being said I don't think McGovern is strong enough to beat Lynch in a 1 vs 1 marking contest.
-
How will our back six matchup on there forward line and who takes who ?.
-
Probably forced to play Astbury on Kennedy, Grimes on Darling. Tough ask though...
-
How will our back six matchup on there forward line and who takes who ?.
Astbury to Kennedy
Grimes to take darling when deep. Broad go follow him when he goes up the ground.
Whoever’s not on darling to take Allen
Stack to shift down back and play on Rioli or Ryan.
-
Kennedy is not 100% ...bit like Jack.
Darling is the main show in their forward line.
-
The AFL website is tipping the Eagles by a couple of goals.

Match preview: Richmond v West Coast
AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Aug 13, 2019
Where and when: MCG, Sunday August 18, 1.10pm AEST
What it means for Richmond: The first opportunity Richmond has had to play the reigning premiers this year. With both teams in form ahead of finals, it's a perfect opportunity to test themselves against the best.
What it means for West Coast: A perfect opportunity to play a fellow top-four team at the MCG. It'll be just the Eagles' third game for the year at the home of the Grand Final.
The stat: West Coast forward Josh Kennedy failed to take a mark last week against Adelaide for the first time in his 239-game career. He is averaging four marks a game this season, and six per match over his career.
The match-up: Jack Darling & Josh Kennedy v Jack Riewoldt & Tom Lynch
It's a battle of the heavyweight key forwards. The Tigers pair have combined for 33 goals in the eight games they've played together (average of 4.1), while the Eagles have kicked 88 goals from 18 games (average of 4.8).
It’s a big week for: Damien Hardwick
Richmond has selection issues aplenty, and all of the good kind. Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin are set to return to a side that's won seven games straight. The Eagles also pose one of the Tigers' biggest challenges of the year.
Big call: Luke Shuey will relish a return to the ground that yielded a Norm Smith medal, dominating the stoppages and finishing with nine clearances.
Prediction: Eagles by 13 points

Hardwick knows the secret to beating Eagles
Mitchell Woodcock
West Australian
13 Aug 2019
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick believes the Tigers will have the wood over West Coast when the ball is brought to ground at the MCG on Sunday.
The two sides meet in a massive clash between third and fourth that will go a long way to determining who finishes in the top two.
Remarkably, the two teams have not met since round nine last year, when the Eagles claimed a 47-point win at Optus Stadium.
Hardwick has been keeping his eye on the Eagles and believes limiting their contested marks and getting the ball to ground will give his team the advantage.
There is a high chance of showers in Melbourne for Sunday.
“We have been keeping an eye on them obviously and getting a good understanding of how they play,” Hardwick told AFL 360 on Monday night.
“They do play a little bit differently to other sides and it presents a challenge.
“They are incredibly strong in the contested marking game as well as the clearance game.
“Their ground ball stuff is the area where we probably excel that is once again the area they are not as good at.
“If we get the ball to ground we will be OK. But the fact of the matter is they have some big, tall boys that mark the ball and control the ball in the air. If we let them dominate that area of the game we are going to be in enormous trouble.”

“For our group to test ourselves against Richmond at the MCG, I do not think there is any bigger task in football,” Shuey said on AFL360.
“A few young guys will get some experience this weekend.
“If we win great, we move on. But if we lose, it is not the end of the world.”

Eagles aim to ‘bring A-game to MCG’ battle with Richmond according to Jack Redden
Justin Chadwick
PerthNow
August 14, 2019 4:55PM
West Coast midfielder Jack Redden says Richmond are still the benchmark team in the AFL, but insists the Eagles won’t be daunted in Sunday’s blockbuster at the MCG.
The Tigers (14-6) have won seven straight games to shoot up to fourth spot, and will be boosted by the return of star midfielder Dustin Martin this week.
Redden said the round 22 clash would be a big test for third-placed West Coast (15-5).
“They’re the benchmark at the moment,” Redden said of the 2017 premiers.
“Throughout the year each team has had stages in that top four or five. Richmond have got momentum at the moment.
“Their form is pretty similar to the previous couple of years, and they’ve got some key players back. I can’t wait for it.”
West Coast will start as underdogs despite boasting a hot recent record at the MCG.
The Eagles have won their past five matches at the home of football, including last year’s epic five-point grand final win over Collingwood.
West Coast have also won three of their past four games against Richmond, including a 47-point triumph when the teams met in Perth last year.
Redden said the Eagles weren’t scared of the challenge that awaits them.
“I don’t think it’s daunting. The boys know what to expect,” Redden said.
“We know we’re going to have to bring our A-game. Richmond are a quality outfit. I dare say they’re going to be deep in finals.”
Richmond have decided to hold back skipper Trent Cotchin (hamstring) for another week.
But Martin’s return could set up a mouth watering duel against Elliot Yeo, who has performed strongly against some of the AFL’s best big-bodied midfielders this season.
“That would be pretty special. There’s only a few in the league who have that power and explosiveness,” Redden said.
“If that eventuates, it would be pretty special to watch.
“We’re very confident in Yeoey. I think he’s a superstar.
“He’s a gun player with a defensive attitude as well. That’s massive for our team, and I think that stands up in big games.”

King: Tigers must avoid ‘shallow hell’
David King,
Herald Sun
14 Aug 2019
If you choose to land the football 30m to 50m from goal then prepare to fail.
This 20m band known as “shallow hell” is the intercept marker’s feeding ground.
Jeremy McGovern is the star of “shallow hell”.
No one has intercepted the ball more in 2019. Some 24 of his 39 defensive 50m marks have been intercepts.
McGovern is marginally ahead of Greater Western Sydney’s Nick Haynes and Richmond’s Dylan Grimes, two other masters of the hell zone.
The interceptor is a role that creates counter-attacking fluency. It flips the game from defence to attack with one high-octane counter punch.
It is why McGovern is the AFL’s most influential defender. He generates more scores from his intercepts than any other player.
“Don’t get beaten by what you know” is a philosophy I believe all coaches abide by when they make their match plans.
While all plans don’t necessarily work, negating the opposition’s best player or method is imperative.
West Coast Eagles plays a different style of football and employs drastically different systems than its premiership rivals.
These points of difference require greater focus from opposition teams.
Reducing McGovern’s impact is the No.1 priority of opponents.
McGovern’s intercepting influence has greatly affected the Eagles’ win-loss ratio over the past two seasons.
If he takes four or more intercept marks, the Eagles win 86 per cent of the time, but when he takes two or fewer intercept marks their win rate falls to 61 per cent.
Teams have used different strategies to stop McGovern from disrupting their ball movement, especially trying to block or check his path to marking contests.
Port Adelaide drove the ball forward along the ground in Round 5, which ensured the Eagles had their fewest intercept marks of the season. The chaos approach was an outstanding success. McGovern did take three intercept marks but none led to the Eagles scoring.
Collingwood checked or blocked him several times prior to marking contests.
The Pies flirted with the laws of the game, but it worked to great effect.
McGovern took only two intercept marks — as opposed to his five in last year’s Grand Final — and Collingwood pinched a one-point win.
Why don’t teams negate McGovern by tagging him?
If he was 6cm shorter and a half-back flanker with his kind of scoreboard impact on the counter-attack, he’d certainly be tagged.
Surely it’s easier to slightly alter your system by assigning one player a tagging responsibility rather than distorting all your ball movement patterns?
Jackson Trengove rattled Alex Rance in a half of football in Adelaide last season, to the point of requiring a Trent Cotchin intervention at the main break.
Why don’t we see that against method against McGovern?
If McGovern is allowed to continue to be McGovern through the finals series the Eagles are likely to go back-to-back.
Does Richmond coach Damien Hardwick keep some powder dry at the MCG on Sunday, thinking of a potential finals meeting, or does he try something lateral on McGovern?
Is the tagger worth a look, even for just one quarter?
What if Josh Caddy or Jack Graham stood at McGovern’s shoulder all night, never leading for the football, never trying to out-think or presume to out-read the ball’s flight better than McGovern?
What would be the impact for Adam Simpson and the Eagles?
Logic says Richmond should continue to play the Richmond way, particularly given that it’s Round 22.
Their forward handball game may create enough overlap run that it will place the Eagles’ defence group under enough pressure to disrupt McGovern’s tactics.
Maybe, maybe not.
The Eagles are only an average team at winning clearances over the last five weeks.
All the data highlights that their attack off the back of intercepts is their strength.
It produces a high scoring rate for inside-50s as they often carry the ball the length of the field.
Richmond this week can put a severe dent in the Eagles’ hopes of hosting two home finals, which would be a significant blow given they’ve won seven of the past eight matches in Perth.
The season’s most influential home-and-away game on Sunday will either make West Coast premiership favourites or friendless with punters.
My best advice to the Tigers is: don’t lose to what you know.
Don’t fall foul of “shallow hell”.

Round 22: Fast Tigers or Slow Eagles, who prevails?
Niall Seewang, Jake Michaels and Matt Walsh
ESPN
14 Aug 2019
Round 22 could be one of the most fascinating weekends of footy we've ever seen, with a host of September-shaping games. Here's What To Watch For.
Fast and furious or slow and steady?
Sunday's clash between Richmond and West Coast might not only be a Grand Final preview but it also showcases two teams with completely different game styles.
West Coast's kick-mark style allows them to set up their defensive structures and defend with ball in hand, something which helped them grind their way to the 2018 flag.
Richmond, on the other hand, have unleashed a Tiger Tidal Wave upon the competition, leading the league by a mammoth amount in terms of handball metres gained, with their fleet-footed pressure forwards causing chaos for rival defenders.
So, which team will prevail at the MCG? The Tigers are of course kings of the 'G, but the Eagles actually boast a super impressive record in Melbourne in recent years after the construction of their new home base in Perth.
While most games are won and lost in the midfield -- and make no mistake, the battle around the ball will be fierce -- the match could be decided by the Tom Lynch/Jack Riewoldt vs. Jeremy McGovern/Tom Barrass battle. If one pairing gets on top, it could not only decide the contest, but land a huge psychological boost for the victors.

Could Townsend come in and play that roll he did so well in the final 6 games of 2017?
He played well on the weekend so he is in form.
Would it really matter if Rioli, Caddy or Bellis didn’t play to try this again?
We have the side to shuffle a few around to make this happen easily.
I am always of the opinion of stopping the oppositions must important player but Dimma has shown he doesn’t really care what the opposition do.
-
No. Too slow and we have Lynch now. Caddy isn’t even allowed in the forward line now. We need speed and harassment and X factor, that’s why Stack went up there.

MAKE SURE YOU GET SOME SLEEP, DAVE
Mick McGuane
Herald-Sun
16 Aug 2019
Go 455 days back — to Round 9, 2018 — for the last time the Tigers took on the Eagles.
That’s a weird quirk of the AFL fixture.
Richmond v West Coast, MCG
Sunday, 1.10pm
David Astbury and the Tigers have been waiting for this game for a long time.
The Richmond defender had a horror time against the Eagles in Round 9 last year, having seven goals kicked on him by Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy.
He started on Darling, then forces to shift on to Kennedy, with Alex Rance coming in to support him.
There is no back-up from Rance on Sunday, but Astbury will hoping Dylan Grimes, Nathan Broad, Bachar Houli and Nick Vlastuin can assist.
Astbury and others will have sleepless nights. The Eagles forward line of Darling, Kennedy, Oscar Allen as well as Liam Ryan, Willie Rioli, Jamie Cripps and Jack Petruccelle looks imposing.
Richmond was smashed against West Coast in Perth last year, with the Eagles scoring 130 points, the most the Tigers have conceded in two years.
Surely, Adam Simpson's team can't be as efficient this time. Incredibly, they had only 45 entries for those 130 points.
Richmond’s defence has tightened since its Round 13 loss to Adelaide. They haven't had more than 70 points kicked against them since then.
Keep the Eagles to 70, and they’ll win.
As a footy fan, I’d love to see Elliot Yeo head-to-head with Dustin Martin. But if I were Simmo, I wouldn’t let it happen.
Mark Hutchings kept Martin to 26 last time — 17 contested — and I’d expect him to go with Dusty between the arcs before handing over to Shannon Hurn.
Trent Cotchin’s absence is huge.
So the onus is on Dion Prestia, Jack Graham (who might take Yeo), Kane Lambert and Shane Edwards to bring their “A” game to limit the influence of Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Jack Redden and Yeo.
I’m excited to see how the twin towers of Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt (five goals against the Eagles last time) perform on Tom Barrass and Will Schofield, with Jeremy McGovern being that roll-off defender to assist.
Remember this time last year many were questioning if the Eagles could win consistently at the MCG.
That, too, seems an eternity ago.

We need to start to ramp up the pressure cooker heading into the finals and bury teams on turnover.
No more nice wins. Kill or be killed.

Calling the Tiger Army: Hardwick wants 'G to be a cauldron against Eagles
The Age
August 16, 2019 — 12.08pm
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has summoned the Tiger Army to help his side get over the line against West Coast on Sunday.
The 2017 flag winners host last year's premiers at the MCG in a blockbuster showdown and possible grand final preview.
The Tigers boast Dustin Martin back in their lineup after a week off, but will miss Trent Cotchin for one more week as the club takes a conservative approach to his hamstring injury.
In their skipper's absence, Hardwick has called on the league's strongest membership to help fill the MCG and help them secure a top four place.
The Tigers are hoping to break the record crowd between the two sides of 57,616 set last year.
"Hopefully we get some fans there, 60,000-plus would be very, very nice, get a cauldron-like effect so we can give them a Richmond-like welcome when they come onto the ground," Hardwick said.
"I've been at a lot of footy clubs around my time and I've never quite seen the electric atmosphere that the Richmond fanbase can bring," he said.
A bumper crowd has certainly boosted the Tigers before.
The defining characteristic of Richmond's run to the 2017 premiership was enormous finals crowds at the MCG, unrivalled in the AFL era.
Then there's the small matter of umpires favouring home crowds.
Champion Data figures show no side has been awarded more free kicks in the last 20 years than the Eagles, benefiting from parochial crowds in Perth.
"They get a lot of free kicks? We don't get many," Hardwick cheekily said.

Interesting to see if we kick some "dirty ball" into our forward line. Low hack balls that can't be easily read and picked off by McGovern in the air yet play to the advantage of our small and midsized (Dusty especially) forwards. Port used this tactic well when they beat the Eagles in Perth.
Alternatively, we could use one of Lynch or Jack as a decoy. Sacrifice their personal game with false leads to drag McGovern away from where the ball is really going into our F50.
-
Id like hardwick to keep one or two things up his sleeve in case we play these guys again in the gf.
Hope he doesnt show all our cards on sunday.
-
Looks like we're going to have to win both games
-
Was always the case IMO as I don't expect pies to drop any of the remaining 2
I hope giants beat dogs so we don't have to see them as I think we could be playing 8th in a EF :thumbsdown

Reckon we will finish and yep play the dogs

Tigers can divide and conquer Eagles
Mick Malthouse
Sunday Herald Sun
18 Aug 2019
Richmond finally has harmony in its forward line and that should worry all its rivals, because an in-sync attack is like having a majority government — it makes it a lot easier to pass a bill.
It’s taken a while, but the Tigers are now using Tom Lynch to full effect by playing him deeper as a lead-up option, with more space in front to hit him on the chest.
By bombing the ball on top of his head earlier in the season, the Tigers put Lynch at a disadvantage against his opponent. Now they look for his lead and know that he can take care of the rest.
Back from injury and match-fit, Jack Riewoldt is the roving tall, playing out of the goalsquare and up the field, anywhere but in the way of Lynch. They don’t need to contest the same ball.
And that is how a successful two-pronged tall attack works — divide and conquer.
Much like Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling at the other end of the ground.
The Eagles duo, when fit, works in tandem beautifully for maximum output, and has done for a while. My only query is Kennedy’s form. At times, he looks tired and sore and overcooked after years of giving it his all.
I expect that he and Darling will put Nick Vlastuin, Dylan Grimes and David Astbury to the test tomorrow in contested marking.
Likewise Lynch and Riewoldt against Jeremy McGovern, Tom Barrass and Will Schofield. The Eagles’ defenders prey on slower, more one-dimensional forwards so they won’t get it their own way against the Tiger talls.
Eventually the game will be settled, like always, in the midfield.
Both so full of class it’s hard to split which midfield will end up on top and I expect it to go to the wire.
Tom Hickey has been outstanding in the absence of Nic Naitanui and Toby Nankervis’s withdrawal could hurt Richmond. I hold Nankervis in the same high regard as Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn.
The inclusion of Dustin Martin, coupled with Dion Prestia, Kane Lambert, and other cameos the Tigers use, will be a match for anything the Eagles throw at them.
Mark Hutchings will most likely tag, while Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey and Dom Sheed are all match winners.
Richmond can’t afford to lose this game and I think it has September prep written all over it.
Richmond and West Coast haven’t met since Round 9 last year, so tomorrow’s clash is going to be a beauty.
For two teams who are poles apart in game structure, they are unbelievably similar in game stats this year.
In fact, there are only two major stats where they greatly differ, which in turn highlights the structural contrast between the two teams, and could decide the outcome.
The Eagles play a controlled game. Kick to retain the ball.
Richmond’s style looks like controlled chaos. Kick, thump, bash the ball forward at all cost.
Average disposals per game has Richmond tallying 10 per cent higher than when it won the 2017 flag, at 372 per game. West Coast has 353 disposals on average this year.
In the split, that’s 215 kicks and 158 handpasses for the Tigers, and 226 kicks and 128 handpasses for the Eagles.
Richmond goes inside 50m 56 times per game for an average return of 86 points for and 76 points against, compared to West Coast’s inside 50, 50 times, at 88 points for and 75 against.
Clearances are relatively even and contested football numbers are almost identical.
It’s the uncontested football stat where the Tiger’s average numbers are 10 per cent greater than the Eagles and the marking stat where the team from the west has a 10 per cent advantage over the home side.
These stats are parallel to the game styles of the two teams and where their differences are most evident.
West Coast wants a kick and mark game. It wants to control the tempo and the ball and it wants the opposition to do all the hard work in trying to take the ball off them.
Richmond confuses and unsettles its opponent by hammering the ball forward any way it can. It intercepts the football at the contest at a loose ball, by using numbers, pressure, panic and scramble.
Sunday’s game won’t be one for experimentation. The Tigers must win to retain a top-four spot. The Eagles need to start stamping their September authority. So I see them both engaging in tactics that they will employ during finals.
The Tigers have accepted that Alex Rance won’t return this year so the backline is getting on with its job without him. The return of Josh Caddy has given the Tigers a lift.
They’ve won their last seven games and confidence, hunger and momentum is building with finals around the corner.
The Eagles are still teasing us. Of their last eight games they’ve won seven, but they’ve had lapses with a one-point loss to Collingwood, and even against Adelaide last week they let the Crows back into the game.
They are still lacking that steely resolve, though I think it will come. It’s when, that’s the premiership question.
Not this week. Wet weather specialists Richmond by five points, only because of the forecast.

Was always the case IMO as I don't expect pies to drop any of the remaining 2

Yep me too

Results falling the Scraggers' way so far... :shh

Skills are poor in the warm up. :banghead
Eagles look sharp.
-
Once again it's about nullifying them at stoppages and clearances in the midfield.
West Coast has averaged 34 points from stoppages this season (ranked third), while Richmond has averaged 26 points from this source (ranked fourth-last). Over the past four weeks, West Coast has averaged 41 points from its clearances (ranked second).
The Eagles have averaged 17 points from throw-in clearances this season (ranked No.1), but have scored only five points per game from ball-up clearances (ranked last).

Can't allow them to have free players all the way down the ground :banghead.
Then pathetic defending in the goalsquare gifts them a goal :banghead. Soldo needed to smash that for a rushed behind :facepalm.
0 - 6

Now the umps jump in. Free to Darling against Soldo. Soft free :banghead.
0 - 12
-
How bad was Houli in the middle there. Scared
-
No we don't get the soft frees in our forward line ::)
-
Eagles poor disposal in defence allows us in and Caddy marks 30 out. Goal! :gotigers
Obviously needed that one.
Rich 1.0-6
WC 2.0-12

So you can throw the ball over your head now?
Finally one of their throws is pinged ::).
-
Ross to Houli and he finds Lynch 20 out on a 45 degree angle. Misses. Grrr!
7 - 12
-
They are rebounding out of our forward line on the switch far too easily. 3 times now for 3 goals.
7 - 18

Tom Lynch Mises a sitter yet their ruckman makes no mistake.

Sheds out of defence to Bolton on the bounce to George to Graham to Lynch to Bolton to George and he bounces one through :gotigers.

Can our forwards play in front at the centre bounces.

How many marks have they taken in our forward line?

Marks: 9 - 28 :P.

Soldo best on ground for the Eagles so far. Ivan, you're meant to tap it to our blokes not no one.

Me thinks this might be ugly. Really ugly.

Sheesh they can't miss today.
13 - 30

What is going on with the stoppages. Getting murdered out there
-
How many marks have they taken in our forward line?
I'm here
They're killing us all over the ground, aerial marks, they way they set up the way they spread. It doesn't look good tbh and could get thumped unless weather changes

Ridiculous but I'm close to calling it. Their too clean and seem quicker than us.

Don’t apply pressure and don’t tackle
We are hopeless as the Gold Coast. Useless footy.

Last play there summed us up. Had a break but waited followed by a high bomb straight to McGovern.
Quarter time
Richmond 3.1-19
West Coast 7.1-43
Goals: Caddy, Castagna, Short.
Pathetic!

Is Soldo injured?
Chol seemed to be our only ruck option from halfway in that quarter

No pressure = ordinary team.
Simple equation really.

Any of you Houli lovers at the game, watch him closely- does not even look where his man is!!
Defend first you c”head.

Thank gawd Grimes is playing.
Caddy long from 51 but it's off hands.

Get stuffed ump. LOL calling that studs up. You should never umpire an AFL game again for that joke of a decision.

Sheds out of the middle. Goes long. A couple of stoppages. Quick snap by Graham is OOTF.
Grimes saves the day again in defence bumping Darling off the ball.
Ellis to Bolton on the wing to George. Finds Dusty 60 out. To the square. Caddy palms it back Lynch. Snap across the face for a throw-in. Ellis marks the Eagle kick on 50. Horrible kick and Soldo marks but it's not paid (called touched) >:(.
Playing against 25 today.

Same story every week missed set shots and same players.A few need to lift to.
We should be a couple of goals in front. 5 sitters (from within 25m out) we've missed today :banghead. Not good enough. From that close distance, it would even be better to hold the ball sideways so there's more surface contact with the boot to make it go straight.
-
11 more inside 50s yet we're trailing :scream.

Floss smashes it forward from HB. Caddy to Short. Goes long. Jack soccers it into McGovern's shins and it's a throw-in 40 out. Dusty torp but it's juggled by an Eagle over for a point.

Awesome win, but talk about a putrid game by the umpires. I haven’t seen anyone penalised for studs up in a marking contest and it gets called twice on the same player.

Richmond has now scored a season-high 53 points from forward half intercepts today, with the slippery conditions adding to the importance of territorial advantage.

Tiges are the best wet weather team going IMO.
I'd agree, but I actually thought that the wet weather favoured the Eagles today. Kept it close IMO. We killed them in the 2nd quarter without taking advantage, and we were primed to do the same in the 3rd, but the rain evened things up.
Definitely take the win, but I think we might have opened them up a bit if it had stayed dry.
-
What I loved about the win was we didn’t bend over and capitulate after they jumped us like our performance against Collingwood in the prelim. We grinded it out and chipped away the lead then came out on top. This is the sort of win that has me thinking the tigers can seriously be holding up the premiership cup at the end of sept

Thought Caddy moved better than usual...best game for a while... :shh

From Robbo's 'The Tackle' column of likes and dislikes:
LIKE 1: MARCH OF THE TITANS
There’s a scary element about Richmond. Not the jump-from-behind-the-door-and-say-boo scary, more the hunter chasing its prey. You just know the Tigers won’t abandon the chase.
They were near enough five goals down and then began their pursuit yesterday. There’s not a better wet-weather team as it suits their character and game style.
Dustin Martin is in 2017 form, so is Bachar Houli, and Dion Prestia looks built for wet-weather football. The Tigers are in the top four and play Brisbane Lions on Sunday. What a finish.
DISLIKE 3: EM-BARRASS-ING
Not much to dislike about West Coast yesterday. The team didn’t let itself down, although it would be worried by the contested-ball count (the Eagles were -22 yesterday).
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick told AFL 360 last week his team needed to bring the ball to the ground. It did that with the help of the rain. Tom Barrass played on Jack Riewoldt for 60 minutes and Tom Lynch for 40 minutes, and although he made some important defensive plays, he also made a couple of glaring errors that handed the Tigers goals. It was unlike Barrass, but now the Tigers will believe Barrass cracks under pressure.

Top shelf footy from top four teams
By Ashley Browne

Sunday at the MCG was a pearler, the sort of game you’ll seek out and watch again in the middle of the summer when you’re craving a footy fix. Spotting West Coast a five-goal lead then coming back to win made this the best win of the season for the Tigers and if it's a wet September then they’re the red-hot flag fancies.
Dustin Martin willed Richmond home in this one. He had that look about him, Dusty, and it seems as though he has taken the sour finish to last season as a personal slight and is intent on rectifying things on his lonesome. He’s good enough to do just that.
West Coast’s first quarter was as good as we’ve seen footy played. They only need to tidy a few things up and they remain in the premiership race up to their necks. Mark Hutchings is now in a race to be fit for the finals, but the wildcard for West Coast remains Nic Naitanui. If he comes back that changes the equation enormously.

Redden: Eagles out of answers for superstar Martin
Braden Quartermaine
West Australian
19 Aug 2019
Midfielder Jack Redden conceded West Coast struggled to come up with the answers to stopping superstar Dustin Martin as the Brownlow medallist led Richmond to victory at the MCG yesterday.
Martin had a career-high 13 inside-50 entries to go with his game-highs of 35 touches and 818 metres gained.
The Eagles tried various approaches to limiting Martin, with Elliot Yeo sometimes matching up on him at stoppages before it became Redden’s assignment.
Yeo (26 disposals) had 11 of his game-high 15 clearances in a big second half and Redden finished with a season-low 16 touches, while Martin was a constant threat.
“I went to his body a little bit at stoppages in the second half. He was dominant in the first half and doing a bit of damage, so I tried to nullify him a little bit,” Redden said.
“He floats between forward and on-ball and he’s a great player and hard to stop. He’s a gun of the competition obviously and you just need to try and nullify his impact and his damaging touches.”
West Coast’s options for Martin were limited by the early loss of Mark Hutchings with a hamstring injury.
Coach Adam Simpson said the Eagles lost the midfield battle as a collective.
“I think Dusty (Martin) had a really good game, played really well,” Simpson said.
“He did it on ball and as a half-forward coming up. Which is part of the way they play. It’s hard to defend, unless you go all the way with him.”
Redden said the Eagles “had a crack” late after giving up their early 29-point lead, but ultimately put their own back-line under too much pressure.
“We started well with our game plan but we just couldn’t stop their momentum I suppose. Because they get the ball and run in waves,” he said.
“I thought we had a bit more composure in the first quarter and we took the game on a little bit more. They didn’t really allow that in the second quarter and took that away from us.
“They probably beat us around the ball a little bit in the second and got dominance in that area. So the boys had a crack but just couldn’t stop their inside 50s in the end.”

How Richmond "starved" West Coast of opportunities
By Nic Negrepontis

Richmond and West Coast battled in a heavyweight clash on Sunday afternoon, with the Tigers emerging the winners by six points.
The Eagles got off to a flying start, booting seven goals to three in the first term and getting out to a 29-point lead.
Nick Riewoldt believes Richmond passed another huge test on the weekend.
“They asked the question of Richmond straight away. We haven’t seen them challenged like that and we haven’t seen anyone score like that on Richmond this year,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“They answered a big question from then on. What Richmond showed yesterday is that they can take a punch.
“They can take a punch straight in the mouth. West Coast came out, they gave them their best shot and after quarter time, for the next 60 minutes, it was a complete domination.”
The Tigers kicked five goals to two across the second and third quarters as heavy rain fell on the MCG and Riewoldt believes they completely shut down the reigning premiers.
“They just starved West Coast of opportunities … in the first quarter they had 17 inside 50s and kicked seven goals, they were very, very efficient,” he said.
“They only had 27 more (inside 50s) opportunities for the rest of the game. A lot of those came in the last quarter as well late in the contest.
“Richmond’s ability to set up that wall across half forward and just keep repeat inside 50 after repeat inside 50.
“They had that plus they had the deep, deep sweeper in Dylan Grimes for the majority of the game, and West Coast did not look like they could score.”
West Coast controlled the game before the rain started to fall, but Riewoldt still thinks the Tigers will be the team to beat, even in pristine conditions.
“I still think Richmond because I think less can go wrong. That’s why I’ve been big on them. They are doing something that no one else in the competition is doing and they are making other teams look pretty ordinary,” he said.
“They made West Coast for a period of time look ordinary.
“That mechanism where they drop that deep sweeper, and they’re happy to allow an outnumber in any other part of the ground because if you win the footy, you’ve still got that player, usually Dylan Grimes, sitting 80m behind the footy.”
