It’s been such a long time coming and for those of us x geners who lived our best years watching one colossal screw up after another it’s something I’ve contemplated amongst the pure joy of celebrating the flag.
Purely for self indulgence, I’ve thought about not winning a flag through my 20’s and 30’s which is offset by the fact I was away from Melbourne for 7 years which would’ve raised the anxiety levels to get a ticket while being away - I also think winning the flag is as much about the season as it is the actual winning of the gf.
Then there’s the disbelief which came with the way we swept to victory in those last weeks of 2017 and the emotion of winning after such a long wait.
This feeling was franked by the inevitability that the flag was ours to lose after we beat the Eagles late in the home and away season this year.
The 3 years we’ve had has been unbelievable being the envy of the entire competition after 35 years of envying almost every other club at various times is a bit of a conflict but then I remember one thing.
Collingwood have won as many flags in the past 61 years as we have in the past 3 years :rollin
Possibly I should just take what I’ve been given and enjoy it ;D

I actually think we've experienced a good decade .
The 80s started well but to finish with a winning percentage of 40% was poor. We really bottomed out and collected 2 spoons in 3 years back in 87/89.
The 90s was really the era of "Ninthmond". We started poor but from the mid 90s on we had a "good ordinary team"
From 94 on - you could look forward to the footy each weekend with some expectation. Plus we had Richo.
The 00s were a complete disaster. Carlton and Richmond were statistically the worst two teams of the decade .We suffered a failed rebuild under Plough. We were under resourced compared to the juggernauts of the competition.
A false dawn in 2008. Cousin's hysteria which in hindsight was a flop.
The 2010s considering we started the decade being compared to Fitzroy have been remarkable. The journey has been memorable. The little patch were we won 5 out of 6 games in 2010 was the beginning. Bookies had already paid out on us winning the spoon. We had to contend with compromised drafts but made a return to finals after an embarrassing 12 year hiatus. We had to face more ridicule after bombing out of the finals in 13/14/15 .
The 9 game winning streak of 2014 was something to remember forever. To go from 3-10 to finals was just an exhilarating ride to go on.
2016 took us all by surprise - It had appeared the old Richmond had returned . We looked miles off . Most of us thought Hardwick had run his race... We've seen it all before.
From as early as the JLT in February 2017 things looked excitingly different. Speed and daring play. Something good was brewing. Sure there was a few "Richmondy"moments but after that St Kilda flogging the team looked unstoppable.
We finish the 2010s as the sixth best team in H&A .
Hawthorn and Richmond are the only teams to have won multiple premierships .
We are currently the envy of the competition. A massive massive juggernaut. We play a style of football that the other clubs can not counter. It's a wonderful time to be alive.

Personally I'm still spewing about losing by a point to WC in 92.
Knights' running goal against Essendon in 95
Plough still gives me nightmares with that basketball game we won against Adelaide. We could win with that style but nobody wanted us to play it, ourselves included.
Sure Cousins was overhyped but for me it marked a bit of a turning point, start of some very positive energy around the club.
Richo on the wing. No it wasn't all bad but there were some fairly empty stretches.
Once we started getting on top of Geelong, that was the sign. They pwned us for years.
Need to set our sights on collecting more cups than carlton now. Then it will be all worth it.
-
Nope! Nothing can ever make up for being the lowest of the low for 30 years! We became the laughing stock of the competition, the media, the people in the street & especially the members of other clubs all paid out on us at every opportunity. Even many of our own supporters turned to side with the mob, wanting us to lose so they could troll the loyal supporters on blog sites! Only the weakest turn on their own club ...
So many loved our misery, not the least of which were the media - they danced on our grave harder than most, it even helped some media personalities to make big personal gains at our expense. The expansion into the AFL just created more people who loved our misery!
Now we sit here with two flags in 3 years ... & it does feel pretty good too!
Gone are the 'Ninthmond' jokes! Gone are the 'Richmondy' jokes (although a few 'personalities' tried to dredge it up again earlier this year). Today it just serves as a reminder that many people just want to see us crash, again. Some can't contain their joy the moment we lose the lead, they eagerly forecast doom & gloom for us at the slightest opportunity.
And what does all that mean to us?
It means that they hate & fear us like never before! We were feared in our halcyon 'Hafey Era' of the 60's & 70's, but now in the national AFL competition we are hated & feared more than ever! The hate & fear of all things Richmond is now a national obsession! Mine salt. Enjoy every minute of it.
We (the loyal Tigers of old) deserve to enjoy our rise to success more than most fans, nobody has put up with more cr*p than us.
We know it wont last forever, it never does, but to grab a few more flags & hold the football world by the throat for as long we can would be totally awesome! :gotigers
-
Every decision made by everyone at Richmond has led us to this point.
Any change to any decision means we would not be enjoying Martin Jack Rance Cotchin, all the way down to Stack and Pickett.
Sure the 37 years sucked but the last three and - most likely - the next 10 are going to be a wonderful time to bffve a Richmond supporter.
-
Only if Carlton are shyte for another 14 years at least..and we win 8 flags in meantime. ..#first2twenty..:shh
-
9-peat....Shh
-
I was always worried that when we actually got a side together capable of playing finals, we'd be like the Saints a few years ago and not win anything.
-
St Kildas inherent DNA is to be unsuccessful. Ours is that when we have good sides we win flags.
-
I actually think cousins although on field was a flop was the catalyst we needed for the proper rebuild. I recall Martin and Cotchin saying he had a tremendous impact on believing in their inherent talents and burning others away with their class and skill.
One thing which kills me about the past 30 years was losing both the jack dyer and Tom Hafey tribute games. It was hard being a Richmond supporter then because even north could win their Jason McCartney game against us!
I love the club for being able to break the drought and for being the juggernaut it is right now. I love that they have restored hope and I personally am happy to forgo the past crimes from the Richmond of old for what we are experiencing now
-
Not ashamed to say YES
Simply, due to that 30 odd years of "nothingness" I never thought I'd see another flag in my lifetime. They are so bloody hard to win. But we now we've got 2.
The hard times were horrendous. From going through the ridiculous war with Collingwood which we lost (some Club legends should hang their heads in shame for what they did), to facing the prospect of not having a Club at all, to so many false dawns they made the supporters stronger
And because of those times I've learnt not take anything for granted because when I was a kid as Tiger supporters we did. And the nothingness period hurt like hell.
This is a special time one we should embrace and cherish but at the same not forget where we've come from to get back here.
Everyone has the right to celebrate where we are now in any way they chose.
Personally, I won't be going back the to the arrogance of the 60s and 70s because that's what led us to the horrendous and I for one don't want to go through that again. We can be the most powerful Club in the land and still be respectful, humble and admired.
Right now that's what I'm most proud of, what we as a Club have become.
-
Yes
The last 30 odd years have made this as special as it is, so happy and fullfilled after 2016 thinking I would never get to see it!
But yes more please, going to be a good/great team to watch and follow for at least another 5 odd years.
-
100% yes from me too.
The past is the past for me.
For a long time I supported the club but in no way did I have any respect for it.
It was definitely a love hate relationship at times.
But the last 3 years is all I remember now.
‘17 and ‘19 Grand Final days are the best days of my life.
I celebrated both days with 3 life long mates and Tiger supporters.
It actually make me emotional even thinking about it.
Love the RFC.

Put yourself in Melbourne's, Saints shoes and the answer is yes. They'd kill to win a premiership. 37 years compared to those teams still searching. Wow.
-
I've got a few Dockers mates who are getting very salty.
They've seen Big Brother win 4 flags. Adelaide and Port win a flag well within a decade . Brisbane win a threepeat.
Now after quarter of a century they are basically starting from scratch again .
-
I would not have savoured, celebrated nor felt as contented after the 2017 GF unless we had those 37 years of pain.
-
Yes I think it makes up for it.
I was born in '88 so was not alive for the premierships before that.
My earliest memories are of the mid 90's.
2017 was pure magic. Really enjoyed 2019 but nothing will ever compare to 2017, maybe not for the rest of my life.

Yes Andyy nothing will compare to the feeling after the 2017 premiership.
However it will be replaced by a new feeling you haven't experienced before in your life and another feeling you won't forget.
The feeling of supporting THE dominant football team. You will walk into meetings and into bars with a new strut and the plebs there will only talk in whispers "There is a Richmond supporter, lucky bastard" or more likely "Richmond supporter lets go to another bar"
Feed off the hate coming our way and enjoy it.
-
Enjoy guys and girls while were in this space all I can say alot of sour grapes out there and jealousy doesn't last forever. The thing is now I'm confident with Penny,Benny, and Balmy and football department (recruiting) were in excellent hands couldn't be more happy best in business. :gotigers. In the past couldn't say that at all.
-
No.
Every year is different. Our club went through misery for 37 years. It can never be allowed to happen again. Lessons have to be learned and ingrained from this era of success.
-
Like a few of the others, I was born into the era of mediocrity, never saw any of the previous greatness. All I've ever known leading into 2017 was how great the Richmond sides of the late sixties to early 80's were.
So its amazing to be able to join the conversation now.
For me, it absolutely does. From a statistical perspective, you should really expect one every 16-18 years, and I suppose for me we have done that now.
But I also understand the opinion that it doesn't quite make up for the years of shyteness. I can only imagine if you saw a team performing the way it is now, to have them floundering a la Gold Coast/Carlton for 35 years (with sprinklings of average finals performances) it would be very difficult to take.
And like most have mentioned, I never, beyond my wildest dreams, thought I would actually ever get to see one. That's honestly one of the few things on my bucket list - and probably the only one I never really had any chance to effect. So from that perspective, to see 2 sates me. And yet, I'm hungry for more. And more. And more. I want to see us put in a performance of domination and destruction the likes of which has never been seen. That make the Brisbane/Geelong/Hawthorn teams look like flukes. And I want this now more than I ever have before.

It doesn't make up for it as those 3 decades were wasted years and we should never forget the self-inflicted mess that put us in the wilderness for so long. However, all that misery makes you appreciate the success now and vindicates us supporters who always felt that when it did finally arrive we would become a behemouth on and off field once again.
-
The way we were going i never thought id see a premiership any time soon and here we are with two in three yrs.The 17 flag took away a lot of the pain. The 19 flag gave us a lot of respect back.
Dont think anything can make up for the abject mediocrity and incompetence that we went thru for 30+ yrs though. fmd we hardly ever made finals in that time yet alone seriously challenge for a flag.Im not sure i will ever forgive or forget those yrs.
-
Bump.
Does a third flag in 4 years make up for the previous 30?
-
It’s about even in my book
The lessons should be learnt and not forgotten , there are many pieces to our success including the people at the top , recruitment and development
-
That time nothing makes up for it fullstop club was run so poorly on and off the field.
-
Only a 37-peat will make things right.... :shh
-
No.
Rebuilding a club should not take 30 years and no organisation in any industry should ever be so poorly run.
The cliff will come one day (see Hawks, Swans etc) but it will hopefully be 5-10 years tops for a full list refresh and open the premiership door again.
-
See my post on page 1
Was yes 12 months ago, with full explanation as to why and it is still a resounding YES
-
Easily and makes it so much sweeter after doing the hard yards for sure and watching all the 20 somethings that stuck by us receive third well deserved reward

My two sons amongst that lot. Made it all the more special.

I feel sorry for you if your answer is still no.
3 of the greatest days of my life.
And this year was the best of the lot for me.
After such a poo year in Victoria with COVID, this made this year still a memorable one.
I just hope our ride isn’t over yet- it’s just too good.

Agree. Need to learn from the past and make sure the same mistakes are never repeated.
-
I think the irony in some of our posts is that we are implying that we have learnt from others?
Pretty sure we have set new standards for others to learn and follow.
Makes the 3rd flag taste that little bit sweeter.
-
Trying to be objective and realising it’s just so difficult to win a premiership, for me the answer is yes. You have clubs like freo and st kilda who are desperate for a flag and big clubs like Carlton Collingwood Essendon it’s a long time between drinks for them.
A premiership is ridiculously difficult at the best of times. There’s no guarantee you get to recruit a Cotchin Martin Riewoldt Rance Edward’s all within the same time frame. not to mention us losing the free kick count every week and Steve hocking changing the rules to deliberately hamper our advantage.
These 3 premierships are extraordinary and when the sun sets on our dynasty if our club takes 30+ years to push top 4 again I think I’d be ok with that.

Are you happy to go through another 37 years of irrelevance for 3 flags around 2060?
I am absolutely enjoying our time in the sun but no club should ever perform so poorly for so long. I hope we have learnt and never go back there.
-
Every decision over that 37 year period - right or wrong - has led to 3 premierships in 4 years and a team with still a chance to add to that record.
All good for me

At this risk of this going into a circular discussion, I think the club has learnt it’s lesson and that has really been 10 years in the making.
What is now clear to me is that the vision of Benny and co. at the end of 2010 was the start of the new generation in leadership at the club.
We’ve bedded down our off filed first - finances, player facilities and then player recruitment (rookie, trading and late picks) before then nailing player development and game style.
The lessons we have learned we really 25 years in the making not 35 years ;D.
We didn’t just wake up Sep 30 and magically become premiers.
The last 4 years have been the cream we probably never expected but now most likely crave as a club and playing list.

So true.
Hope Benny and penny stick around. Penny copped a fair bit of crap too for being a woman and American. Must feel very vindicated.
I suspect the club will never go as low as it did previously.
If the question is more focused on the holistic future rather than just the 3 flags then I would say yes it was worth it.
-
Great question by the way. It's s tough one. Do you want to be competitive every year and win the flag say 3 times in 20-30 years or deliberately go down the ladder for picks to become a powerhouse and win multiple flags over 5 years. We did neither of those things and did it so no sure fire way to predict anything.
I certainly wouldn't go back to the late 80's, early 90's when in those days just one win felt like a flag we were so bad.
The worst things about being non competitive is the flogging you get from your friends and the smartalec comments. I sure am loving this aspect of being a smug supporter at the moment.
-
Agreed. I remember the highlight of ‘88 or ‘89 being Peter Wilson doing cartwheels when we beat Carlton.
No more of that thanks :scream
-
Your right to be average is just that.!if your rebuilding have plan!
Just buying up discards from other clubs just made us average
-
I think a lot of the last 30 years of poor results was due to the VFL/AFL expanding & handing out massive advantages to the new clubs. The moment the hand outs stopped we rose to the top again.
There were plenty of times we were our own worst enemy, hopefully we have put those days behind us. That is our major objective in the future - to make sure we don't implode & go back to being the 'bad old Richmond'.
Football clubs are constantly changing, we have a great organization right now but it can't last forever. Constant change will see to that.
Our fortunes always float on the personnel we have year by year, we wont always have Benny or Balmey or Peggy with Dusty, Cotch & Grimes on the field, it will always change & sometimes for the worse.
We have it right at the moment & are enjoying the best period of our whole existence, but change is the only constant in life & in football! Our present crew can never pass on all that they have learned to their successors (there wouldn't be a challenge to rise to if it went on forever), the next crew wont fail to learn the lessons of the past but they might find themselves dealing with an impossible situation that could never be avoided. We will rise & fall as always, regardless.
I can only wonder how Hafey, Hart & G.Richmond would've handled a global pandemic such as the one Dimma, Cotch & Peggy are dealing with now? And what if the AFL decide to add another 8 teams to the competition & we don't see another quality junior player or top draft pick for another 20 years? Could we blame the next coach, captain & president for failing to learn the lessons of the past as we tumble down the ladder?
I am damn proud of our club right now, but I will still be equally damn proud of our club if we finish in the bottom half for the next 20 years. That is the only constant in football - the belief that our supporters hold in our hearts that no matter how bad things are on any given day, we will always bust our guts to rise back to the top!
Go Tigers! :gotigers
-
I reckon something under estimated in our journey to the top of the heap was the fact we got dudded with new clubs coming in as we bottomed out in 2010-2012.
Makes the rebuild so much more impressive
-
I mean theoretically with all the equalisation measures the AFL is imposing the simplest way to look at it is that you should be winning a premiership every 18 years. If you remove the small market teams who won’t win at the same rate as the others your probably left with around 10-12 teams. So if you look at it that way regardless of the 37 year drought, we are pretty much around the mark.
Not to mention that only west coast with 4 and hawthorn with 5 have more premierships than us in the AFL era with Geelong and Brisbane level on 3.
