Strong side. Only Nank (and of course Ellis now gone) missing from the our premiership 22.

Seems like Nank won't be available for round 1. Chol and Balta were poor last week so it's now up to CCJ and even Biggie to see who will partner Soldo in the season opener. If no one performs will we go with just Soldo as the lone ruck against the Blues?

If CCJ can have a good game as second ruck then from that bench it's down to Bolts, Stack and Dow for the final two spots on the round 1 bench. You'd expect Lambert to be there while I don't see Biggie, Ross or Higgins making it yet.

Markov, Aarts and Chol are going to have their work cut out for them this year to survive beyond 2020 at Tigerland. Not a good sign if you're being dropped already and younger players are ahead of you.

There’s no talk of revenge in the Giants camp but victory on Sunday would certainly ease the pain just a little for the orange and charcoal faithful.

Broad down the line to Houli to Baker towards Jack at HF but he can't mark it and GWS clear.

Too easily rebound for another Giants goal. No pressure from us so far  :P.

We're playing like a preseason game. Just off. Nearly marks, nearly tap ons.

Houli to Caddy to Lambert inside 50 to Dusty 40m out but he plays on and the ball is smothered. We get it back and Caddy finds Soldo. He takes the set shot. Goal!  :gotigers

Rich  1.0-6
GWS  2.0-12

We get the centre clearance but GWS clear off HB. We're bombing it mostly again like last week.

Kelly hospital handpass to Whitfield and Floss nails him  ;D.

Point to GWS.

Pooring defending allows Haynes to push forward and mark 45 out. Thankfully he kicks that one like a defender and it's OOTF.

We can't get it out of our D50 on repeated efforts and eventually the Giants kick a goal.

Another centre clearance and we can't find a marking again. Towards Jack at HF and off hands for a throw-in.

Dusty to Baker nice kick finds Pickett. Goes to the square and Lynch can't mark. Rushed for a point.

We get it back via CCJ who gets it long to the pocket. George front and square and snaps a good goal. One more than the GF  ;D.

Rich  2.1-13
GWS  3.1-19

Another centre clearance to us via Prestia to 45 out. Jack cleverly taps it on to the voice of runners but it's a throw-in. GWS clear.

Houli nice kick down the line to Rioli. Goes long inside 50. Knocked away from George. He gathers it but the ball is smothered and it's a stoppage. Rioli over the shoulder handpass threads the ball through the eye of a needle to CCJ who goals  :gotigers.

Rich  3.1-19
GWS 3.1-19

Broad clears out of defence. GWS players spoil each other lol and it's a throw-in. Cotch to HF but GWS clear.

Soldo intercepts. To HF towards Jack but it's spoiled. Pickett runs down the DeBore but Rioli sprays his shot.

Well that's a few minutes of play both sides won't want to see again  :P.

Quarter time

Richmond   4.4-28

This.

The game is being played the way the Giants want it. Too open and allowing their HBs a free reign. They are getting most of their goals from rebounds out of forward line  :scream. Too many bombs or miskicks inside F50 from us and little pressure from our forwards and team defensive structure up the ground to keep it in there.

Disappointing.

Too easy and open going forward GWS.

We have to stop the short kicks from HF to that 40m mark.

Agree that our defence looks WEAK.

Jack looks slow and I think the F50 entries are already a worry.

Bombing it in or missing leads and creating our turnover.

Stack and Pickett INs.

Short and Broad too scared to get hurt.

Cameron - dirty act on Lambert.

Nice warm up.

I like how we are still conservative with our possession and want pressure footy to create turnover.

Still won contested possession.
Still won inside 50s.
Still won centre clearances.
Our tackling and pressure was ok but a lot room for improvement.

There were glimpses of pressure footy throughout the game obviously we will be ramping that up as the season progresses. I like that Baker isn’t in defence.

We need to improve our inside 50 entries
Our pressure can always improve
Our defensive set up and cohesion with our back six needs some honing. Stack looks good there and their are good signs. CCJ looks good and very capable both in Ruck and up forward.

Signs are good early that it will be another entertaining season

Bring on round 1 :gotigers

Official crowd: 6556 at Robertson Oval, Wagga Wagga

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LAST year's grand finalists have tuned up for the home-and-away season with a highly entertaining clash to finish the Marsh Community Series in Wagga Wagga, with Greater Western Sydney prevailing over Richmond by 14 points on Sunday.

The clash was played at a ferocious intensity from the opening bounce, and while the scoreboard was free-flowing – the teams combined for 18 goals before half-time - the pressure on the ball-carrier, especially in tight, was immense.

Both sides couldn't sustain their intensity for the whole game, but it was a tough hit-out and a perfect lead-in to the season proper.

GWS was extremely accurate in front of goal and eventually held off the Tigers to win 17.7 (109) to 14.11 (95).

The Giants were well served by star forwards Toby Greene (five goals) and Jeremy Cameron (22 touches and 12 marks), and Josh Kelly and captain Stephen Coniglio through the midfield, who all returned from the bushfire charity match to be highly influential.

Greene's five goals included three in the third term when the Giants threatened to run away with the game, with the last three of the quarter handing them a game-high 21-point advantage.

Power forward Tom Lynch booted four goals after the main break to help the Tigers reduce the margin to single figures midway through the last, but the Giants managed to control the play for the rest of the quarter with both sides visibly exhausted.

Dustin Martin asserted himself on the contest in his usual fashion, especially in the first half, with the superstar Tiger dangerous playing as a forward and through the midfield.

He finished the day with 24 possessions, eight clearances and two goals.

Livewire small forwards Daniel Rioli and Jason Castagna caused the Giants some problems inside 50 and finished with two goals apiece, while gun onballers Dion Prestia and Shane Edwards, and running defender Jayden Short, were also effective.

Who's missing?

Big man Toby Nankervis, and midfielders Jack Graham and Kamdyn McIntosh didn't feature against GWS. Nankervis was an emergency, while Graham (shoulder) and McIntosh (ankle) could also press for a game in round one.

New faces

Versatile tall Bigoa Nyuon didn't get a lot of game time in his first game for the Tigers but looks an exciting prospect, while fellow draftee Thomson Dow also had little impact.

Next up

The Tigers will take on traditional rivals Carlton in the first match of 2020 at the MCG on Thursday March 19, while the Giants head back to Sydney to prepare for a clash with Geelong at home the following day.

----------------------------------------------------

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick also sent a message to the rest of the League, declaring his side is still working into top form ahead of their traditional round one match against Carlton.

"We've got some things that are working really well and then there's some things that we've still got work to do (on)," he said after the loss.

"We're playing some reasonably solid footy without being at our very best, and we know that hard work is still to come.

"It was up and back, both sides were transitioning really well, but they weren't defending very well, so we've got some work to do in that area.

"We'll look at our defensive system, because obviously we don't want to be playing 'kick and catch' in the back half, so we'll tighten the screws with regards to that.

"It's exciting for us, we know we're not playing our very best footy."

Would be nice if Broad backed himself to mark a little more often.

Had a bad game but the run will do him good.

I didn't think he was that bad, but wasn't confident to go for a mark.

It was a good hitout for both clubs but our intensity was nowhere near what we can/will deliver in the second half of the season as we get closer to September. The game was very open with the Giants' marking tally sky high and both team's tackling numbers were low. That's why it was fairly high scoring. The game was played the way GWS like it where they have time and space to use their footskills. Most of their goals came from rebounds out of our forward line due to the lack of real pressure and team defensive structure. No way that will occur in the real stuff especially once we start getting closer to our peak.

THE TIGER DARE

Did you notice this in the third quarter?

Richmond have this habit of allowing 15-20 metres space between the immediate defender and the next option up the field. It’s the Richmond dare, and only the bravest of teams take the challenge.

Or the stupidest.

Where GWS sits on this scale of bravery/stupidity is probably best broken down in a pre-season game. Richmond allow the forward handball… they lull you in. Once, twice, three times… and whilst you get rid of the ball and gain ground, their web closes around you, and each forward handball becomes more pressured, more panicked, until the turnover occurs.

The thing is – Richmond know the turnover is coming. They’re set to go the other way, and the forwards are ready to pounce. The opposition believe they’re going to run the forward handball gauntlet and get through. It’s a rarity.

Richmond tightened the screws on the Giants in the second and third quarters. They asked the question of the Giants, and caused turnovers, and it is open to interpretation as to whether Richmond stopped asking questions, or whether GWS answered well enough to deter them in the last.

Whichever way you look at it, the Richmond capacity to pressure the footy has not evaporated over summer. But has the Giants’ ability to withstand it increased? We’ll get our answer in 2020.

It says a lot about how much preseason form matters little when GWS was the only top side to win both their games and three of last year's top 5 lost both games including the two flag favourites (us & the Eagles).
