It’s a big round 11 for…
By Ashley Browne
SEN
7 August 2020
Less than 20 hours after round 10 finishes, round 11 begins. Ash Browne looks at who will be under the microscope.
Of all the great stories that are told in the aftermath of a premiership win, the tale Richmond people like to refer back to after last year’s triumph was the seven-point win over Port Adelaide on the road in round four.
It was supposedly the unwinnable game. No Trent Cotchin. No Jack Riewoldt. No Dustin Martin. Alex Rance was gone for the season and the Tigers were still trying to rejig their backline.
It was also their second straight game on the road. In the before-times of 2019, that was still a thing.
Yet the Tigers were magnificent that night, prevailing in an arm wrestle against the Power. Boom recruit Tom Lynch kicked six goals to help steer them home, and the four premiership points gained proved to be invaluable for Richmond, which finished the home and away season in fourth place. Without them, they would have needed to have win four finals on the trot to win the flag.
They were good in 2019, no question about it. But that good?
Which brings us to the opening game of round 11. In a normal season, this would be the start of the run home to the finals. It still seems a bit early for that, but there is no mistaking the importance of this game.
It has been hard to find too much fault with Port this year and every time the Power brings the effort, which as coach Ken Hinkley likes to say, they win the game.
But the path to the premiership runs through Richmond. The Tigers have won five of their last six games and their systems and structures just break teams down. Brisbane did a few things right last week against them, but still lost by 41 points.
This will be a great game and perhaps the first this year that generally shapes as a Grand Final preview. The self-belief and all-round excellence that Port has demonstrated all year will be severely tested against the side that knows it has the measure of every other team in the competition.
Richmond knows it can take below-strength teams on the road and beat anyone. Then again, how weakened are the Tigers these days? Shai Bolton, Jake Aarts and Noah Balta aren’t making the Tigers forget the likes of Dion Prestia, Shane Edwards and David Astbury, but they know they can win without them.
It is the competition for spots if anything, that has driven the Tigers through this frantic period of the season. It is a coach’s dream when the so-called ‘depth players’ are driving the improvement of the team.
There is no surprise that tickets for this game sold out as soon as they became available. It will be one of the defining games of the season.

Hardwick said the clash with flying Port Adelaide, who were too strong for the Western Bulldogs on Monday, loomed as an "enormous challenge".
"They've been terrific. The way they play the game under Ken (Hinkley), they're very explosive and like to use their speed," he said.
"From our point of view they're very, very dangerous. We have to be at our best to deny the way they play and take away a couple of their strengths."
Hardwick said Richmond will likely send Noah Balta to Port’s Coleman Medal contender Charlie Dixon on Saturday.
Dixon has a 6cm height advantage on Balta and weighs 5kg more than his likely opponent.
But the Tigers are prepared to go with the 20-year-old - who has been likened by Hardwick to retired star Alex Rance - in the absence of injured dual premiership backman David Astbury.
"We’ll probably look at a young Noah Balta to have that opportunity on him first and foremost, and see how he goes,” Hardwick said.
“It’s an enormous opportunity for Noah and one we’re prepared to back him in with.”
Dixon has kicked 17 goals from eight matches this season to sit firmly in Coleman Medal contention and has clunked more contested marks than any other player in the competition.
The 29-year-old veteran’s average of 3.4 contested marks a game puts him well clear of his nearest rival, Fremantle’s Matt Taberner, who averages 2.3.
“(Dixon) is incredible,” Hardwick said.
“His contested marking is very good and it has been for a long time. I think his consistency at this level has by far exceeded his seasons gone past.
“He’s so dynamic as well and he’s very good at ground level.”
Balta has played 18 AFL games since making his debut in round one last year and has impressed since replacing Astbury in round five this season.

Hinkley welcomed the challenge Richmond presented for his top-ranked side.
"It's pretty big – they're the champs," he said.
"Let's be honest, they're the team everyone's trying to beat. Nothing short of our absolute best will get the job done and I think we're ready to have a crack at it.
"We're going to challenge them with our game as best we possibly can. We need to find out (where we're at) against the best team in the competition over the past three years."

Damien Barrett tipping Port.
Port Adelaide
IF … you're familiar with the phrase "moment of truth" ...
THEN … for Port Adelaide, it arrives on Saturday night in the form of the again rampant, two-flags-from-the-past-three-seasons, Richmond. I'm backing the Power in. Reckon there's something special unfolding for Kenny this year.
Richmond
IF … the club itself has awoken from its little slumber (five wins from the past six matches) ...
THEN … the big man up forward, Tom Lynch, exploded back to life on Tuesday in the big victory against Brisbane. Dangerous signs for the rest of the comp.

Looking forward to Noah vs Dixon.
Hoping the young fella stands up.
-
This will be a key match up and one i am also looking forward to. Dixon will be very aggressive and will try to impose himself over Noah but i am confident Noah will at least match him on the day.
Vlas will be important intercept player today.

Really hope the umpires don't ruin things, these days they seem to want to penalise every physical marking contest. Unless its obvious just call play on and let the game flow rather than calling these 50/50 decisions that invariably seem to be paid against us.

Rest assured, we are going to be absolutely fisted today by our mates in white.
Port in SA always get a good run and they are currently the league's underdog hopefuls.
Tigers clearly hated by all. Crap about racially motivated sexual assault, as if this is some sort of rape strategy. More crap about wanting their groceries paid for in the hub.
Target on our backs. Need to make sure the scoreboard reflects how strong we are!
-
Try to have a good start the key.Pressure and tackling needs to up there as mentioned Port don't like the physical stuff. Our smalls super important in the weather.Need the rucks to show up today and nail our inside 50.Isolate Lynch one out.
-
No late changes. Teams as selected.

-
Amazing goal but pretty soft defence, no pressure
-
Got to take our chances
-
So.do has to mark those
-
Soft start. Losing the contests badly. Mids/ground level players need to lift.
-
Really poor start
1 - 19
3 really easy goals to them
-
Wake up now or this will over at 1/4 time.
-
Rioli :banghead
-
Butters easily breaks the Lynch tackle :banghead
We are still on the Gold Coast
Shocking start
We've got 7 minutes to get this back
We don't look like it
-
Still on the plane I think.
-
Loving the bias Fox commentary :banghead
-
The Egg again refusing to go in hard at a contest :banghead
-
Non-competitive. This is Wallace era soft. One-way traffic
-
Lynch gets our first
Not from our good play but a Port stuff up
-
Lucky goal to Lynch due to port stuff up.
7 - 27
-
Jack goal thanks to Chol
13 - 27
-
Take a bow Marboi Chol
That was sensational :clapping
-
0 - 6 centre clearances :help
-
4 minutes to go
And the free kick count is Rich 0, PA 7
-
Serious question Jonas didn't have eyes for the ball u til the last second
Why is that no a free?
-
Jack goal
21 - 28
-
We've made it to the ground at last
-
Port's backline is their weakness.
-
1/4 time
Rich 3.3. 21
PA 4.4.28
-
1/4 time
Richmond 3.3-21
Port Adel 4.4-28
Goals: Jack 2, Lynch
-
Their mids look like one way runners. Hopefully we can get some more ball in the middle. Played 5 minutes that quarter and made them look shaky down back.
-
Frees
PA 8
RICH 2
And the 2 came in the last 3 and half minutes of that quarter :gobdrop
-
Got to figure out a way to even the centre clearances. Not going to win having to start every attack from defence. Missing Cotch in there.
-
Would be nice to have a ruckman block up some space on Dixon. Soldo couldn’t block a toilet.
-
GOAL!,
That was typical Richmomd :clapping
-
Hooray we finally won a centre clearance via Bolton. Lambo goal
27 - 28
-
That was awful.
3 in the contest and no one touched it
Goal to whoever
35 to 27
-
That was a free to Lynch not paid
-
We have to start sticking tackles
They are breaking them far too easily
-
Ladhams doing a Cox :banghead
-
Jack 3
33 - 35
-
Wrong call by the ump but we will take it
Umps have been paying bizarre decisions today :help
-
They're feral the crowd
But great to here a real crowd
-
DUSTY
-
Dusty goal
39 - 35
we're in front! :o
-
Port ferals lol
-
Great courage by Baker
-
These centre clearances are hurting us big time :banghead
-
Eddie McGuire is a flog!
-
If anyone at anytime can explain the current holding the ball rule to me I'd really appreciate it :-\
-
:banghead :banghead
He wasn't the Egg man then he was the Walrus :banghead :banghead
-
Eggy, enjoy your last AFL game. That was atrocious.
-
Can't make multiple defensive mistakes. Gifted them a goal.
-
:banghead :banghead
-
I've been asking the same question for a mont, wp.
-
Pathetic defence
All caused by a stupid free given away by Eggmolese-Smith
Jack Ross standing there like a stunned mullettt
-
It was going to break given their mid dominance.
-
Eggy deer in the headlights today.
-
I’m sorry, Egg is a coward... how many times can you avoid a contest.
-
Aarts goal
45 - 54
-
Well done Jake Aarts
Brilliant kicking by Short
And we'll done Pickett too
-
You can look at free kick numbers
It’s how and when
We’ve been kissed on the marb by the umpires so far
-
Eggy deer in the headlights today.
When the pressure is intense he doesn't cope
Has happened every week since the N0rt game
Better opposition he is found out
-
Can someone win a CC please :banghead
-
Can we get a holding the ball. That guy took on 2 tacklers.
-
Rioli :scream
-
Rioli :scream
And again disgraceful
-
Bloody lucky
Another Rioli turnover almost gifted them a goal
-
Geez Rioli is out of form and down in confidence.
-
Half Time
Rich : 7.3.45
Port 8.6.54
Frees
Rich 6

Geez Rioli is out of form and down in confidence.
Then don't play him
He is a liability out there
-
How’s the barracking by the commentators!
Give it a rest Eddie.
Awesome game to watch.
-
1/2 time
Richmond 3.3 7.3-45
Port Adel 4.4 8.6-54
Goals: Jack 3, Lynch, Dusty, Lambert, Aarts
-
Same issue - not going to win while they are dominating centre clearances. We are just hanging on. Should not be this close.
-
What a game !!!!
-
I will back us in to win this type of game. Ground balls are crucial, push forward, pressure. Go tiges :gotigers :gotigers
-
Few passengers tho need more from Caddy,Rioli etc.Got to be smarter to there getting a few cheap goals.
-
We have 5-6 players who must lift for us to have a chance. Rioli, Castagna, Lambert, Lynch
-
Can we stop Byrne-Jones getting the handpass away in the tackle every single time? :shh
-
Small forwards not doing there bread and butter pressure and tackling.
-
The umps lost control then I reckon.
Some fairly obvious HTB not paid.
I think they too aren’t used to the crowds.
-
It is cracking game
-
Another fricking CC to them :banghead
-
Terrible handball by Dusty, turnover and away they go
Dixon goal
And again put tackles don't stick
-
Got what we deserved. It all starts from the centre.
-
Can't afford those type of fumbles
-
Game over
-
Defenders are starting to panic and lose structure. Miss are getting destroyed.
-
We needed the next goal
No defensive effort by Pickett gifted them the easiet of goals
Will struggle to get back from here
-
Too easy for them.
-
Cotchin should have played this game. Stupid decision.
-
Legs are done!
Game over
-
Like Pickett, Eggmolesse-Smith have to keep attack9ng contest
He gave up on the bloke leading
-
Legs are done!
Game over
Poor excuse
Port playing their 3rd game in 10 days
-
Aarts goal
54 - 68
-
Aarts our best small forward today (again)
Goals
-
Please I will beg if I have to
Get the Egg off.... another turnover via a free due to him panicking again
-
We can't get any momentum because everytime we kick a goal they win a clean CC.
-
Egg again, dropped uncontested mark, terrible handball and then gives away the free kick.
-
Is Lynch playing?
George?
-
Chol goal
60 - 69
-
Caddy has been MIA too
-
Chol goal
66 - 69
-
Scary but I'm agreeing with Eddie
Marbs playing his best game ever
-
3 points down .... while the surrender monkeys chant 'game over' .... :P
-
Well done Kam, just wanted the ball
Goal Stack
We hit the front
-
Kmac to Stack. Goal
72 - 70

Another CC goal to them :banghead
Forget the CC
The Balta handball
The Egg retreating again
Dumb, dumb, dumb
-
:banghead
-
:banghead :banghead
Stack head, over the shoulder, no free but again poor defence
Challenge now
-
A double 50
We are likely done
Two fifties given up by senior players
Shame on Dusty and Caddy
-
It's a territory game WP. Giving up CCs gifts them easy time in forward half and soft goals.
brainfade 50s doesn't help either :banghead
-
:banghead :banghead
-
2 incorrect disposals in tackles - play on nothing to see here!
-
Please I will beg if I have to
Get the Egg off.... another turnover via a free due to him panicking again
Agree he's soft as butter.
-
:banghead :banghead Caddy
This is terrible
We are not handling the pressure at all and we are applying no pressure
-
We don't look like getting inside 50 let alone a goal
Why handball George?
-
They have been too good this quarter and we just lack polish with so many out.
Said it once but we've seriously missed Cotchs leadership.
-

Some blokes I don't want to see in the side next week
Des

Soft free.
But correct call
Pity they haven't paid them consistently all night
-
Port really stacking that corridor so we can't run it down
-
Never again Egg
-
Feel sorry for Balta, that last free was horrible, ball in the area no hands. Play on muppet!
-
1 - 19 in50 this qtr :help
-
Boys tried their best. Port are the real deal this year. Although seems like they stepped up to the occasion. We are still missing so many crucial players. Prestia cotch shed houli and nank. I would have loved to win tonight. But a loss isn't the worst thing. Keeps us in check and keeps us hungry. Still many games to go, we are travelling very well
-
Never again Egg
:clapping :clapping
Pressure and he cracks and ends up scrambled
-
We are blessed
This was a 15 goal shellacking that didn’t happen

Yes reckon all those players you mention play today we win
But still disappointed with a number of blokes, very poor todsy
-
When you're always on the back foot having to start attacks from defence it tires you out. We had no more juice in the last.
-
No mid field and too many passengers today
+1

Agreed many players went missing and we still had a ripping game. A gutsy effort. So many inexperienced players. Egg a good example. Hasnt earnt the trust yet
-
22 frees to 11 when you have the same amount of tackles says a fair bit too.
-
Probably the game of the year to be honest. They just wanted it that bit more plus the crowd really helped them. I'm really proud of the boys.
10 day break and we will welcome back Cotch, Houli and Nank.
-
Only positives are we didn't lose a chunk of % and no injuries touchwood.
Boy do we need Cotch, Sheds & Prestia back in the midfield if we want to win it again.
-
Slomo ultimately cost us that quarter and match, just dreadful tap work......bloke is utterly useless... :shh
WP's whipping egg was poor but the far more experienced Broad was even worse...Grimes it has to be said had a rare shocker too....in fact it was probably the worst performance from our backline for some time...... :shh :shh
-
Broady & Grimes were both really fumbly and panicky tonight. Their guns played well ours didn't.
Let's see how they go when Cotch, Houli, Prestia, Nank, Edward's, Astbury are back in the finals.
-

I agree...
That was a cracking game for 3 quarters.
We had it all against us including the umps but as someone said, they wanted it more than us in the end.
I think we had 3 free kicks in the second half.
-
They kicked 2 of the arsiest goals you'll ever see too.
-
Egg was beyond poor. He was terrified all game. A complete liability.
He is way too soft for finals-like footy.
-
Egg's played less than 10 games- what's Broad's excuse...or Rioli's for that matter? :shh
-
Egg's played less than 10 games- what's Broad's excuse...or Rioli's for that matter? :shh
They don’t have any.
Rioli shouldn’t be in the seniors.
Just saying that Egg was like diabolically bad.
-
Great game to watch, best contest of the year.
Our backs had a hard night due to our mids being blown away. Egg was found wanting in the heat and i am not surprised. Good experience for him however.
Very disappointed in Lynch tonight. Was absolutely pathetic!
We lost the game due to their midfield dominance around the contest.
Not sure why Rioli is copping it, was very good tonight and worked very hard to provide an option on the wing...George on the other hand :whistle
With our outs, a good game from the boys.
-
I counted no fewer than 9 players who had absolute shockers...that's literally half the onfield side ...we did alright all things considered... :shh
-
To many passengers tonight Caddy,George,Lynch,Lambert etc.Not easy flying up on the day and 4 day break say it again ridiculous we we're made to travel.See nothing special in Port had there measure with major outs to.
-
WP's whipping egg was poor but the far more experienced Broad was even worse...Grimes it has to be said had a rare shocker too....in fact it was probably the worst performance from our backline for some time...... :shh :shh
Without doubt both Broad and Grimes had their worst games of the year. Agree with you, backline as a collective were poor.
Egg was more than poor. The concerns I have and have had with him get magnified when we play quality opposition. He stands back, refuses to attack contests and is slow.
He had 11 disposals and went at 43% efficiency. That % continues to drop away against better opposition. That's my concern with him
-

Young player so the experience will be good for him. But, he gives away too many frees and panics under pressure. Must rectify this should he was a career.
-
We are blessed
This was a 15 goal shellacking that didn’t happen
True. Could’ve been worse if they punished us on turnover.
We didn’t play our way today. We were shown up in the one area we are known for, pressure.
They beat us comprehensively in that stat except for maybe one quarter.
Anyways see them in finals.

So true. Our defence were woeful but upfield were didn’t really punish the ball carrier as we normally do forcing turnover. The whole team was very poor in that area and Port did it much better tonight and mainly to Dusty so he was constantly under pressure when he disposed of the ball (41% DE).
We not only had to witness one of the worst performances by a ruckman last week but we had to endure his useless rick taps that gave our midfield no advantage whatsoever. I’d like to see the stat that shows taps to advantage but I only recall one.
Rioli has lost all his mojo, he’s a shadow of the player he was.
Eggs was hopelessly overawed and showed us he has a lot of work to do to get to our standard.
He simply needs to toughen up or id be hoping we look at someone else for that role.
Once again our forward entries were atrocious but I give credit to the way Port pressured us most of the game.
Not one of our experienced super paid forwards could take contested marks that the young ruckman from Port made look super easy at the other end of the ground! :banghead
Well we know we still have work to do and back to back premierships aren’t easy.
Lastly, SPP isn’t a player I want to see in Yellow and Black.
-
Matthew Lloyd on the Sunday Footy Show showed three examples of us failing to man up in defence which cost us goals.
Two by Pickett - the Wines crumb from a throw-in where Marlion was asleep & another where he was in no-man's land and the ball was kicked over his head to a free Port player 15m out.
The third was Short not going with Butters who set up Port's first goal in the last qtr.
-
Did the holy diver ever put on any Defensive pressure in his illustrious career
-
Did the holy diver ever put on any Defensive pressure in his illustrious career
Probably not but in those days it wasn’t really a thing.
I agreed with all he said. It was poor defending, poor discipline and poor concentration from our players at times. The whole team did not work hard enough and are very very lucky it wasn’t a bigger margin in the end.
It was a comprehensive victory by Port.
We will no doubt learn from it and be much better next time we play them.
I’m expecting them to drop off alittle during the latter part of the season as they may be peaking too early.

Egg was more than poor. The concerns I have and have had with him get magnified when we play quality opposition. He stands back, refuses to attack contests and is slow.
He had 11 disposals and went at 43% efficiency. That % continues to drop away against better opposition. That's my concern with him
The backline saved us from a hiding. 20 center clearances by Port to 5 for us has the ball straight away in our defence. Port had 55 inside forward 50s to our 24. The ball was in our defensive area for the greater part of the game. We should have lost by more.
We have to be better in the center

Midfield and forward line were utter garbage didn't work hard enough or do the basics.
-
Pickett's degree of defensive accountability would be far different to what he has been used to playing WAFL. Will take some time for him to adapt to the point of it being second nature.
I think we have to put things into perspective with Marlion and remember how many AFL games this guy has actually played. You can't expect miracles although he did produce close to one in the GF but to be honest the level of accountability on the day wasn't the same level was required against Port or other top 4 sides at the moment. I am sure the coaches will go through the vision with him when individually reviewing the game.

The third was Short not going with Butters who set up Port's first goal in the last qtr.
He pulls that crap several times a game...more opposition goals go through his man than anyone....right up there with Newman & Campbell for complete lack of defensive accountabilty.... :shh

Yes the centre bounces were abysmal but the backline was fumbly, panicky & generally shyte....Dixon kicks straight and it is a hiding... :shh :shh

We were defensively poor against Brisbane too ...gave up a lot of shots on goal....but the main thing that's doing my head is the pee weak tackling , falling off tackles /broken tackles, half-arsed one-armed efforts, not pinning the arms and stopping the handball in the tackle and too many players get easily stepped around...clearly not watching opponents hips.. :shh

The hips don't lie

Loose hips sink ships.

Watched it again.
Besides the third quarter we were thrashed all over the ground and shown up in terms of team pressure, they didn’t actually capitalise on their amount of dominance.
Before the game I thought Port had a soft underbelly but after watching it twice I think they are the real deal. Obviously we were not ready for the contest and effected by the media scrutiny and unfounded attack on the club.
Jack mentioning as much on his sen podcast talking about black lives matter (bad luck for the mauled Vlaustin), so that confirms the extent of where the rhetoric veered and the concerns within the club because of it.
It now makes me wonder if there will be future concerns on whether or not a player should be delisted or traded with the fear of the social ramifications and racial implications involved in making such a decision based on race. It shouldn’t be but who knows what they are going to complain about next.
-
This crap is just going to lead to white players excluding non-white players from all their banter and horseplay out of fear of being labelled "racist" ...which of course will in turn lead to them being labelled racist for excluding non-white players.....it's a classic ideological trap....

Woah! Jack didn't refer or link BLM to Chol or the team song incident(s). He didn't even mention any names. He simply used supporting BLM as an example of the playing group wanting to be role models in everything they do. The old-field stuff over the past week was the group not being role models.
-
If you listen again he actually mentions it in the same sentence and in the same context of the incident after being asked to comment in regards to that issue.
He brings up BLM and he wasn’t even asked about that issue at all. He mentions it in relation to what is being discussed.
-
Yes it was in the same sentence because Jack was just illustrating the difference in terms of the players acting as role models or not. With BLM (as an example he was using) they were being role models; conversely, with the theme song shenanigans they were not being role models. That's all he meant. He wasn't trying to link the two separate issues.

Round 11 report card
Foxsports
13 August 2020
RICHMOND
Despite losing to the Power and losing the contested possession count by -43, the Tigers wouldn’t have lost too many admirers on the weekend. They were undermanned yet managed to keep themselves in the game, thanks to their excellent forward 50 efficiency. At 6-4-1, the Tigers are still well placed to have a big run at the top four this year.
In the votes
Nick Vlastuin was massive in defence, finishing with 18 disposals, nine intercepts, six rebound 50s and four marks. Kamdyn McIntosh also may have had his most influential game of the season, while Shai Bolton’s impressive performances as a midfielder continue to stack up, finishing with team-high contested possessions (11) and clearances (7). It was also pleasing to see Jack
Riewoldt return to some goalkicking form, booting three majors, while Jake Aarts and Mabior Chol contributed two goals each.
Room for improvement
Yes they were brave, but if you want to compete with the league’s best teams this season, can you afford to lose the contested possession count by -43? Can you afford to be smashed from clearances (-18)? Can you afford to only have 24 inside 50s for a game while conceding 55 to your opposition? The Tigers have always been a quality-over-quantity team, but the lack of quantity across the board against the Power was alarming.
