Deserves a game in the seniors this coming week against the Bombers. :thumbsup
If we are fair dinkum about 1/ bringing on our younger players and 2/ rewarding consistent performances at Coburg then this kid deserves his chance.
Remember he gave Bumberling Buddy Franklin a towelling on ANZAC day and was one of the best for the Burger today in the wet and mud. :clapping :clapping
Started today on the HBF and then in the 2nd half played mainly mid-field and got clearance after clearance. Disposal by foot let him down a couple of times (but after Friday night a couple aint bad folks ;D) today but on the whole was excellent.
C'mon Tezza - big stage, massive game bring on Marco Polo :thumbsup

Totally agree btw WP :thumbsup

count me in! vote 1 for polo

A lady friend has told me he has great legs
I suppose he gets her vote too :thumbsup

A lady friend has told me he has great legs
Doesn't Polo have a solid torso and skinny legs compared to his teammates?! :yep
-
Jungle dreams beating loudly tonight that Dean Polo gets his chance on Saturday- well done to the kid, battled his guts out to get a game...and battled scandalous criticisms of him early on...I hope he kills em on Saturday.
Jungle drums also suggest that Mr Oakley-Nichols may also get a game. Whilst Jarryd probably hasnt had a chance to show alot...hes an important player in our clubs future and I hope that if he plays that he slays the bombers with his pace.
Good luck to both boyz if they debut on Saturday :cheers
-
I'm sure they would love JON to play in the dreamtime game but he's coming back from a hammy so I'd doubt they'd risk him.
Your jungle drums Ramps though are making the right noises about Polo getting a well deserved and earned debut on Saturday night :shh.
-
Well the jungle drums eminating from Punt Rd have often gone astray over the past 25 years but im pretty sure that part of the story is correct lol ;D
-
;D Yes the jungle drums been out of key for a long while lol.
It would have been hilarious if we were playing the Hawks instead this week and Polo got a chance to own Franklin twice in the space of 2 weeks :rollin.
-
While i was having a smoke tonight, a very excited Dean Polo came outside - not to have a smoke lol - but to make a very happy phone call to his mum. Make of that as you will ;)

Gee I hope someone will be wearing it :lol

No one can accuse us of not playing the kids as Polo will be Wallace's 8th debutant since he took over - Lids, Foley, Hughes, Meyer, Pattison, Tambling, Thursfield and now Polo. Not a bad rate for just 28 rounds.
Could be 9 if the 2nd debutant rumour is true - Matty White?
-
SEN claimed that Jarryd Oakley Nicholls is in the side against Essendon. So if SEN are correct then we will have 2 debuts vs the Dons both Oakley-Nichols and Polo.
-
Wouldnt it be fantastic to see
Brett Deledio, Richard Tambling, Andrew Raines, Brent Hartigan, Cleve Hughes, Jarryd Oakley-Nichols and Dean Polo all in the same team.
-
Hopefully these two will be like the last time we had two debutants on the one day
Duncan Kellaway and mathew Richardson,
if they can have the heart of those two they will be in good stead!

Richmond is set to unveil two promising midfielders in Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Dean Polo in the club's round six clash with Essendon on Saturday night.
Coach Terry Wallace on Thursday revealed the young Aboriginal Oakley Nicholls will take his place in the side for the second annual Dreamtime at the 'G blockbuster at the MCG while Polo will make his long-awaited debut after being drafted in 2004.
Oakley-Nicholls was selected at number eight overall - and the Tigers' first pick - in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft after he was among the Sandgropers' best in last year's under-18 championships.
He played two senior games for WAFL side East Perth in 2005 and was ranked first for agility and second for pace at the NAB AFL Draft Camp.
Polo - a 19-year-old on-baller from country Victoria - was picked up with number 20 overall in the NAB AFL Draft in 2004 and spent 2005 progressing through the Coburg reserves and seniors to the cusp of AFL selection.
Wallace said it was appropriate that Oakley-Nicholls made his debut in the game that celebrates the contribution indigenous players have made - and continue to make - to the AFL brand.
"I couldn't think of a more fitting game for him to have his first game," Wallace said.
"When we look at this game in 10 years time, and we hope that it builds up to be a real spectacle of our game, Jarrad will be one of the people who will be able to say he played his very first game in this particular match."
Oakley-Nicholls endured a sleepless night on Wednesday after being informed of his impending debut and couldn't stop smiling when he fronted the media three days ahead of the game.
"It's a pretty big occasion. I was just rapt to get my first game but to have it in this game is even more special," he said at the launch of the themed match.
"I'm pretty nervous at the moment but I suppose I'll settle down before the game and take it as it comes."
The pacy 18-year-old said he had spoken to fellow indigenous Tigers Andrew Krakouer and Richard Tambling about the significance of the game, and was happy to reveal his family would travel from Western Australia to witness his debut.
"I've spoken to Andy and to Richard and it's a big game to be playing in, especially for my first game. I can't wait," Oakley-Nicholls said.
"My brother and his family and my sister and her kids are coming over and making the trip over from WA.
"I found out (I was playing) yesterday and I was pretty excited yesterday. I couldn't sleep last night."

Good stuff! They were both apparently going to play this week since last Sunday night. I only knew about Polo. I'm still surprised JON is getting a seniors game straight after coming back from a hammy but I'd guess we want him to play in the dreamtime game.
In: Polo, JON
Out: Sugar (inj), Rodan
Hopefully these two will be like the last time we had two debutants on the one day
Duncan Kellaway and mathew Richardson,
if they can have the heart of those two they will be in good stead!
Although hopefully they don't have the kicking skills to match lol.

I really wish JON the best, but it is very annoying that he has been included this week from my point of view.
Players must be made to earn their spot in the team, it doesnt set a very good precedent for all of the other players at the club where JON hasnt done much at all for Coburg and then comes straight into the team after injury.
I just dont like it
As i said earlier, i wish him all the best and hope he has a blinder but is this good for the culture amongst the players?
-
congrats to the debutants also great to see clever get another run
feel a bit for jackson as he would of been a handy in just with his presence and ability to kick a few goals
-
Im stoked.
My 2 favorite players are out in Gas and Johnson and have been replaced, more or less, by Hughes,Polo and JON.
Way to go Terry

Tiger picks right day to make his debut
05 May 2006
Herald Sun
Jon Anderson
WHEN Kevin Sheedy dreams, he often gets results, whether it be an annual 90,000-plus to the Anzac Day clash or an extended interchange bench.
His most recent vision is to see the Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond draw a crowd akin to Anzac Day.
Yesterday Sheedy, Richmond coach Terry Wallace and two indigenous stars of the 1980s and 1990s, Michael Long and Phil Egan, gathered to promote the Dreamtime game.
The Sheedy-inspired concept is in only its second year and, while 90,000 is unrealistic tomorrow night, he knows it's just around the corner.
"A lot of thought and a lot of time has gone into it and we will make sure it works. The history is right with the Tigers at Punt Rd and Essendon having started in the Jolimont paddock," Sheedy said.
"And the two clubs' colours capture the yellow, red and black of the Aboriginal flag. Plus Maurice Rioli at Richmond and Michael Long with Essendon were players who showed what could be done, players who opened the door for more indigenous footballers.
"It provides a wonderful opportunity to show where this country has come from. George Bracken, a marvellous boxer from the early 1960s, was one of my idols, Lionel Rose, Cathy Freeman . . . and, sorry, Michael (Long) of course.
"There's no doubt we missed a lot of potential players in the VFL in the early days. Port Power showed us in the last quarter of a Grand Final what indigenous players can do.
"As far as I'm concerned they can come and dance at the MCG any time."
Wallace endorsed Sheedy's comments. He also announced the debut of No. 8 draft pick from last year, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, as well as Dean Polo, from Gippsland Power.
Wallace couldn't think of a more appropriate debut game for Oakley-Nicholls, an 18-year-old 189cm excitement machine.
"He's exciting and like most of our indigenous boys he plays with freedom. They have no fear and play the game naturally," Wallace said.
For Oakley-Nicholls it's a dream come true, something he thought of constantly when growing up in Perth.
"I was hoping to get a crack this year and maybe get a few senior games under my belt. I play wing, half-back, midfield, but really I'm just glad to be on an oval where I can express myself," Oakley-Nicholls said.
"I've always been a footy boy. We would play all year in Perth. I don't get cricket, it's just too boring and slow. We have to be able to move.
"When I first came to Richmond, it helped me a lot knowing there were two indigenous players in Andrew (Krakouer) and Richard (Tambling) here. We always lock on to each other and I hung around them all the time. Then I slowly started getting used to the other boys."
Oakley-Nicholls, who is doing a personal training course, lives in Preston with his mum, who came over to provide support.
Pre-match entertainment may feature a Corroboree in the centre with the lights turned off. Paul Kelly, Christine Anu, Peter Garrett, Renee Geyer and Kutcha Edwards will sing.
Fans can join the launch of The Long Walk 2006. Walkers will meet at Birrarung Marr from 3pm and walk across William Barak Bridge to the MCG.

I have to ask this. Is the only reason JON is in this week is because it is the Dreamtime game? I didn't think his form had been that good. Wasn't he coming off an injury?
-
I have to ask this. Is the only reason JON is in this week is because it is the Dreamtime game? I didn't think his form had been that good. Wasn't he coming off an injury?
thats the big question.
however, tery and miller did say they belived JON was the best player in the draft and were wrapped he was available when their pick was up.
if he is as good as they say, he deserves a run just to prove himself. he is meant to be as fast as lids , if not faster, im sure he is betetr than half the blokes on our list, and being a first rnd draft pick i cant see the problem, as long as he is fit.
-
Just remidner that Dean Polo is making his debut tomorrow as well :clapping :clapping :thumbsup :clapping
The media don't seem to interested in that fact >:(
We at OER are of course :thumbsup

Good luck to Dean and JON. Hope they both play well and do themselves proud.
-
I have to ask this. Is the only reason JON is in this week is because it is the Dreamtime game? I didn't think his form had been that good. Wasn't he coming off an injury?
Yep Julz, JON is coming off a slight hammy. I'd reckon he wouldn't have played if Sugar was fit but a spot opened up and there was no other midfielder at Coburg who we could say was crying out to be promoted to the seniors ahead of him other than Polo. Jacko is probably a bit stiff though.
-
Awesome debut. 15 possies so far and most have their hit targets and a goal (with a bit of luck) :clapping.
-
Very impressive.
-
28 possies, 11 cont. 6 marks, 3 goal, B.O.G. Unbelievable debut. Played with the poise of a veteran :bow.
-
I think its fair to say that Polo slayed em, and Oakley-Nicholls made some fantastic runs and put us infront...dont underestimate the point people...essendon had plenty of chances to score at the end but continually muffed it...JON ran and put us infront. Great effort. But can someone please teach our boyz that the ball must go through the 2 big posts.
-
I think we might have another Rising Star nomination this week :thumbsup
-
Polo is a monty for the rising star this week.
Would be good to see JON get a few more games, as he looked exciting.
We still have a few to come back into the team also.
Polo showed great poise when he kicked his last two goals. Very tough condidtions and he slotted them very calmly.
He loves to do the hard work looks a very good prospect.
-
2 young kpp players in defence would be handy in the 2006 National Draft.
-
Would be good to see JON get a few more games, as he looked exciting.
Agree. Walls was creaming his pants over the pace of our midfield. Still lack polished skills I think and the early pattern is that we are every chance against the average teams but will struggle against those with a bit more class. Tuck is good but you just know when Cogs gets the ball and kicks long that it is every chance to be turned over and that is not acceptable.

Young Tigers' dream start in win over Dons
By Chloe Saltau
The Age
May 7, 2006
A point to one Richmond first-gamer Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls - and a best-afield performance from another, Dean Polo - sealed a dramatic victory over Essendon last night, as Dreamtime at the 'G turned into a nightmare for the Bombers.
A week after Angus Monfries' mistake in front of goal eventuated in a narrow loss to Hawthorn at the same ground, Jobe Watson had a similar brainfade with the scores level in the dying moments of last night's game, when instead of passing to Scott Lucas or having a shot at goal he dribbled the ball into the pocket and over the boundary line.
Lucas had already kicked three goals in the tense but mistake-ridden final quarter, and threatened to win the game for Essendon. Instead, Richmond's Oakley-Nicholls and Andrew Krakouer each kicked behinds and the Tigers won by two points. Indigenous players from both teams figured prominently, but after the final siren a shattered Andrew Lovett appeared close to tears. Former Essendon hero Michael Long, who earlier led a procession onto the MCG in the spirit of reconciliation, presented Polo with the Yiooken award, a glass boomerang for the best player in the match.

Dean Polo was simply sensational.
Enuff said :thumbsup :woohoo :congrats
I met the young bloke last Tuesday night at the Player Link dinner and he is a terrific kid to boot as well :congrats

Dean Polo was fantastic for us and it was a brilliant debut. Reminded me of when Cogs burst into the scene in that game against the Crows a few years ago. His look away hand passes direct to team mates were great. They can't teach that stuff. You have to be born with it.
Just on Cogs.... he was one of the few I was disappointed with tonight. Really needs to improve his disposal substantially.

Dean Polo's dreamtime
08 May 2006 Herald Sun
Michael Stevens
DREAMTIME at the 'G was a dream come true for Richmond debutant Dean Polo, unanimously judged best afield in the Tigers' stirring two-point win.
A second round selection in the 2004 national draft, Polo, 19, from Wy Yung in Gippsland, had to wait more than 12 months for his chance at senior level.
But on Saturday night, opposed to Essendon's Brent Stanton on a wing, he was the Tigers' ace in a match that went down to the wire.
Polo had 11 kicks and 17 handballs and kicked three goals, including two in the frenetic last quarter.
Richmond coach Terry Wallace agreed he could not have imagined the magnitude of Polo's performance, but was sure he would play well.
"He's very brave and blokes who are prepared to stick their head over the footy and don't have fear are the ones who normally stand up in big games and play well," Wallace said.
"From that aspect, I thought he'd go OK. Obviously no one expects the magnitude of his game today.
"One stage there . . . he had a fantastic first half. We'd assigned him to Stanton for the entire game, that was his role.
"Young Stanton's a great player and he's caused us some troubles, both in proper games and practice games over the last couple of years.
"And Stanton kicked two (goals) on him in the third quarter . . . do you hold your nerve with the role?
"But we had a fair bit of trust in him as we do our other younger players and we continued to go with him."
Polo said he was hungry for the chance to play in the seniors.
"Once I knew I'd got the opportunity there was no looking back. I was going to go for it," he said.
Polo was told by Wallace on Wednesday he would be playing and what his role would be, but with such a big build-up for the match, the teenager adopted a low-key approach.
"I just stayed home and watched movies," he said. "It's like a dream, I can't believe I've done so well in my first game. And I'm really stoked that we got the win as well."
Polo cramped in the last quarter, but had the presence of mind to stay calm when a goal-scoring chance presented itself in the dying minutes.
"As soon as (Jason) Johnson kicked it along the ground, before I even picked it up, I just said, `Goals', I knew I was going to kick it," Polo said.
"So I grabbed it and ran. I knew I was going for it, and it came off, surprisingly."
That goal, Polo's third, levelled the scores.
Another first-gamer, Jarrad Oakleigh-Nicholls, kicked the point to put the Tigers in front.

Tiger debutant straight to the ball
By Emma Quayle
The Age
May 8, 2006
DEAN Polo spent the last half of last week at home, plonked on his couch trying to think about anything other than what his first game for Richmond might bring.
"I just stayed at home. I tried to stay away and not think about it at all," the 19-year-old said. "I watched a heap of movies."
Nearing the dramatic conclusion of that first match, though, Polo was prepared to spend a moment or two picturing what would happen next. Late in the final quarter against Essendon on Saturday night, the teenager saw a loose ball bouncing towards him.
He knew that it would come to him, and he knew what he would do with it when it did. "Even before I picked it up, I just said 'goal'. I knew I was going to kick it, so I've grabbed it and just run. I knew I was going to go for it and she came off, surprisingly," Polo said.
He learnt last Wednesday that he would be in the team. On the same day, coach Terry Wallace found Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls in the Punt Road gym and told him he would also play his first game.
Polo's goal was his third. It was the last goal of the game, and brought the Tigers back level with Essendon. Then, Oakley-Nicholls slid to the top of the 50-metre arc, and sent through a decisive point.
"Terry told me to take them on, so I just tried to take them on. I was hoping for a goal, but at the last minute it faded away," Oakley-Nicholls said afterwards. "It's the biggest point I've ever kicked."
On Anzac Day, Polo played at centre half-back for Coburg against Box Hill — winning a medal for being best player on the ground. Against Essendon, he had five kicks in the first quarter and six handballs in the second.
He had touched the ball 28 times by the end, slipping tacklers and slipping handballs out to teammates. He got his second award in two weeks, a glass boomerang called the Yiooken Award, for the best on the ground.
Polo stuck his head over the ball, ran hard, and did all the things Greg Miller saw him do three years ago, when the Tigers decided to draft him from Wy Yung, his tiny home town near Bairnsdale.
Miller has since seen Polo shuffle from the VFL reserves, to a bench spot in the Coburg team and, in the past few weeks, to the edge of the Richmond team. It was not the move to Melbourne Polo took time to adjust to, said Miller, but the standard of football he realised he would have to play.
"Most of these country kids are very good for the first month, and then things start to catch up with them," Miller said. "They come again, but some come again a bit quicker than others.
"There's a stage, between three and five months, or three and six months, where the adrenaline's worn off, and they're tired, and the work starts all over again.
"Dean took a while, but he's gradually improved, the whole time. For the last few weeks at Coburg, his form has been outstanding."
Not even Polo expected to play as well as he did. "It's a dream," he said. "But once I knew I got the opportunity, there was no looking back. I was just going to go for it."
Wallace had not bothered to pencil in 20-plus possessions and a few goals, either. But the teenager had already impressed. "I would have expected him to play well, because he's very brave," Wallace said. "From that aspect, I thought he'd go OK. But no one expected the magnitude of his game."
GREAT DEBUTS
by Rohan Connolly
JOHN COLEMAN (Essendon)v Hawthorn
(Windy Hill, round 1, 1949)
The 20-year-old full-forward from Hastings launched one of the game's greatest careers in spectacular fashion with 12 goals against the Hawks. He'd go on to kick an even 100 in a premiership year.
CARL DITTERICH (St Kilda)v Melbourne
(Junction Oval, round 1, 1963)
At just 17, the big blond ruckman announced his arrival on the VFL scene with an outstanding best-on-ground performance in the ruck in the Saints' 18-point win over the Demons.
JOHN GEORGIADES (Footscray)v Carlton
(Princes Park, round 1, 1989)
The former WA forward wasn't a big-name recruit when he played his first game, but made a sensational start with eight goals in a big Bulldog win over the Blues. But he'd kick only another 19 in just 14 more games with the club.
ADRIAN McADAM (North Melb)v Richmond
(MCG, round 5, 1993)
The younger brother of former Saint Gilbert McAdam lit up a Friday night with seven spectacular goals for the reborn Roos. He followed it up with 10 goals the next week against Sydney.
PAUL HASLEBY (Fremantle)v Geelong
(Subiaco, round 1, 2000)
The stocky midfielder was an instant hit for the Dockers against the Cats in a Subiaco night game, compiling 30 disposals and kicking a goal in a narrow loss. He'd go on to win that season's Rising Star Award.
ANDREW WALKER (Carlton)v West Coast
(Optus Oval, round 5, 2004)
The No. 2 pick in the 2003 national draft spent a month in the VFL before being unveiled before a home crowd, responding with 26 disposals, nine marks and four tackles, plus a spectacular leap that would have been mark of the year had he hung on to the ball.

One game, one nomination

Paul Gough
Sportal for afl.com.au
Richmond's Dean Polo has been rewarded for his stunning debut performance against Essendon on Saturday with the round six nomination for this year's NAB Rising Star award.
Polo produced one of the best AFL debuts seen in recent years on Saturday night when he gathered 28 disposals and kicked three goals in the Tigers' thrilling two point win over the Bombers.
The 19-year-old showed nerves of steel in the exciting final term when he ran onto a loose ball and kicked the goal which levelled the scores in time-on following a poor kick out of defence from Essendon's Jason Johnson.
Polo is the Tigers' second nomination for this year's NAB Rising Star award following on from Andrew Raines earlier this season with Richmond also having taken out last year's award through Brett Deledio.
Originally from Wy Yung in Gippsland, Polo was the Tigers' fifth draft pick in the 2004 NAB AFL draft but was taken at number 20 overall.
Polo did not manage a senior game in his first season at Punt Road in 2005 but certainly seized his opportunity on Saturday night as he revelled on the big stage in the "Dreamtime at the G" clash, which was played in front of a crowd of more than 58,000.

No MT, would be just as rapt for Marco if he won it.

From the Australian:
May 10, 2006
Wallace said it would be unreasonable to raise expectations about teenage midfielder Dean Polo because of his stunning debut against Essendon.
Polo, 19, was yesterday named as the round six nominee for the Rising Star award, the first player to be nominated on debut in two years, since Carlton's Andrew Walker in round five, 2004.
The midfielder picked up 28 disposals and kicked three goals, including the final one of the match, to lift his side to victory.
Wallace said Polo's performance was the best he could recall by a first-gamer, but it did not mean the teenager should be expected to reach that level again in the coming weeks.
